Rules: The Shivling kept at home should not be very big. The size of the Shivling should not be bigger than the first knuckle of your thumb (knuckle i.e. the part of the thumb which has nails). It is believed that if you install a Shivling of a larger size than this in the house, you will not be able to handle the energy of Lord Shiva.
Metal and Material (Shivling Sthapana Rules)
For the Shivling kept at home, clay, copper, mercury or brass material is considered auspicious. Shivling made of these materials has more positive energy.
Direction of keeping Shivling (Shivling Sthapana Rules)
should always be installed in the north-east corner of the house (also called Ishaan Kon). This direction is considered the most auspicious for worship. The Jalahari (the part from which water flows) of Shivling should be kept towards the north direction.

After installing Shivling in the house, it is very important to worship it regularly. It is believed that if you cannot worship Shivling regularly, then it should not be kept in the house.
