The Regional Passport Office (RPO), Pune, has organised a Special Passport Drive on Saturday, July 11, to facilitate quicker passport appointments for applicants in Normal and Tatkaal categories. The initiative is part of the Ministry of External Affairs' ongoing efforts to improve passport service delivery and reduce appointment waiting periods for citizens with urgent travel requirements.

The special drive is being conducted at Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) Pune and Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) Solapur. While both Normal and Tatkaal applications are being accepted at the Pune centre, the Solapur centre is processing Normal category applications only. The drive covers both fresh passport applications and re-issue requests.

The passport centres will remain open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and applicants have been advised to report 15 minutes before their scheduled appointment time mentioned on the application receipt.

Faster appointments for applicants

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the special drive aims to make passport appointments available at an earlier date while ensuring timely processing for individuals with urgent travel plans.

Applicants are required to complete the online application process, pay the prescribed fee, and schedule an appointment through the Passport India Portal or the mPassport Seva App before visiting the Passport Seva Kendra.

Documents must be complete

The Regional Passport Office has advised applicants under the Normal category to carefully verify that all required documents are complete and comply with the provisions of the Passport Rules before visiting the centre.

Officials cautioned that applications with incomplete or incorrect documentation may not be accepted on the day of the appointment, leading to delays in passport processing.

Tatkaal applicants advised to check eligibility

Applicants seeking passports under the Tatkaal Scheme have been urged to carefully read the Tatkaal Advisory and Tatkaal Undertaking before booking appointments.

The Ministry noted that Tatkaal applications are subject to stricter eligibility conditions and require additional supporting documents. Many applicants fail to meet these requirements, resulting in rejection or non-acceptance of their applications.

Authorities have also advised applicants to verify whether they fall under any Tatkaal ineligible category before applying.

Passport Authority may seek additional verification

The Ministry reminded applicants that under Section 5 of the Passports Act, 1967, read with Rule 5 of the Passports Rules, 1980, the Passport Authority has the legal authority to seek additional documents or conduct further verification whenever necessary for processing an application.

How to book an appointment

Applicants can book appointments by completing the online passport application through the Passport India website or the mPassport Seva App, making the online payment, and selecting the preferred location while scheduling the appointment.

The fourth edition of the Meghalaya Pineapple Fest 2026 began at Dilli Haat in New Delhi on July 10, bringing together farmers, entrepreneurs, policymakers and visitors to celebrate one of Meghalaya's most celebrated agricultural products. The three-day festival, which continues until July 12, aims to promote the state's premium pineapples, strengthen market linkages and highlight the rich cultural heritage of Meghalaya.

The inaugural programme was attended by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia as the Chief Guest, while Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma participated as the Guest of Honour.

Organised by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, the festival provides a platform for pineapple growers and agri-entrepreneurs to directly connect with consumers, retailers and industry stakeholders.

Focus on Farmers

The inaugural programme began with a tour of festival stalls where dignitaries interacted with farmers and entrepreneurs showcasing Meghalaya's agricultural products. A welcome session and screening of a promotional film on Meghalaya Pineapple highlighted the state's journey in developing pineapple cultivation into a major horticultural success.

A pineapple farmer also addressed the gathering, sharing experiences of cultivation, entrepreneurship and the growing opportunities available to producers through improved market access and branding initiatives.

Partnerships for Growth

One of the major highlights of the inaugural ceremony was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Flipkart and NEMIL, aimed at strengthening marketing opportunities for farmers and expanding the reach of Meghalaya's agricultural produce through digital commerce.

A brochure documenting the four editions of the Meghalaya Pineapple Festival was also released during the event, showcasing the festival's evolution and contribution to promoting the state's horticulture sector.

Celebrating Meghalaya's Produce

The festival is designed to showcase the quality and uniqueness of Meghalaya's pineapples while encouraging value addition, branding and better market connectivity for local farmers. Visitors can explore fresh pineapples, processed food products, traditional cuisine and cultural displays representing the state's diverse heritage.

The event also serves as a networking platform where farmers, startups, government agencies and private sector representatives discuss opportunities in agriculture, food processing and agribusiness.

Three-Day Festival

Running from July 10 to July 12 between 11:00 AM and 9:00 PM at Dilli Haat, the festival features product exhibitions, interactive sessions, cultural performances and business engagements aimed at promoting Meghalaya as a leading producer of high-quality pineapples.

Officials said the initiative supports the government's broader objective of improving farmers' incomes by creating stronger market linkages and increasing consumer awareness about the state's premium horticultural products.

The Meghalaya Pineapple Fest has emerged as one of the state's flagship promotional events, helping connect producers with buyers while celebrating the region's agricultural excellence and cultural identity.

The Central government has once again directed all states, Union Territories and central ministries to strictly follow the prescribed protocol for playing and singing the National Song Vande Mataram and the National Anthem Jana Gana Mana during official functions. According to a communication issued on July 9, Vande Mataram must always precede Jana Gana Mana whenever both are performed at the same event.

The fresh advisory reiterates existing rules under the national protocol and asks authorities to ensure uniform implementation across the country. It is the second such directive issued within five months, following a similar order circulated on January 28.

The Ministry stated that the sequence of performances has already been defined under existing guidelines and must be followed consistently. States that also have an officially recognised state song have been instructed to ensure that the national protocol remains unchanged.

Strict adherence to official version

The Centre has directed all state governments, Union Territories and ministries to ensure that both the National Song and the National Anthem are performed using their original lyrics, proper pronunciation and officially approved versions.

To facilitate uniform implementation, the government has uploaded the authorised versions of both compositions on the Ministry's official website for public access and institutional use.

January order reiterated

The latest communication follows an earlier directive issued on January 28, which introduced several guidelines regarding the performance of Vande Mataram in educational institutions and official programmes.

Under those instructions:

• Schools were advised to begin the day by playing Vande Mataram.

• People were required to stand respectfully during the National Song.

• All six stanzas of Vande Mataram, lasting approximately three minutes and ten seconds, were recommended instead of limiting performances to only the first two stanzas.

• Cinema halls were kept outside the scope of the directive, meaning there is no requirement to play Vande Mataram before film screenings.

• Audiences are also not required to stand if the National Song forms part of a documentary or newsreel.

Historical significance

Vande Mataram was composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay on November 7, 1875, and was later published in his novel Anandamath in 1882.

The song gained national prominence in 1896 when Rabindranath Tagore sang it during the Indian National Congress session. During India's freedom movement, Vande Mataram became one of the most powerful slogans of the struggle against British colonial rule.

The Sanskrit phrase translates to "I bow to thee, Mother," symbolising devotion to the motherland.

Featured in Republic Day celebrations

The National Song also featured prominently during the 77th Republic Day celebrations earlier this year. The Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path adopted "Vande Mataram" as its central theme, while the Ministry of Culture showcased a tableau commemorating 150 years of the iconic composition. The tableau later received the award for the best entry among ministries and departments.

Political debate continues

The National Song has remained a subject of political debate in recent years. During Parliament's Winter Session last year, discussions marking its 150th anniversary saw sharp exchanges between the ruling BJP and the Opposition.

The BJP accused previous Congress governments of diluting portions of the song, while Congress alleged that the issue was being raised for political reasons ahead of elections. The debate also included references to historical correspondence involving Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhas Chandra Bose regarding objections raised over certain portions of the song.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also referred to the issue during his address in the Lok Sabha, calling for greater respect towards Vande Mataram and its place in India's freedom movement.

With the latest directive, the Centre has reiterated that official programmes across the country must uniformly follow the prescribed sequence and protocol whenever both the National Song and the National Anthem are performed.

A major political flashpoint has emerged in Madhya Pradesh's Datia ahead of the 30 July Assembly by-election, with protests breaking out after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) replaced former Home Minister Dr. Narottam Mishra with Ashutosh Tiwari as its candidate.

The agitation, which began on Friday evening, escalated into violence in the early hours of Saturday, leading to a 15–20 kilometre traffic blockade on the Gwalior–Jhansi National Highway. Police resorted to firing tear gas shells after clashes with protesters, while several vehicles were damaged during stone-pelting.

Eight Police Personnel Injured

According to district officials, eight police personnel, including the Superintendent of Police (SP) and the SDOP of Bhander, sustained injuries during the violence. Some supporters of Dr. Narottam Mishra were also reportedly injured.

Officials said protesters overturned police vehicles, damaged several trucks, smashed the windshield of the SDOP's vehicle, and allegedly attempted to set a police vehicle on fire.

Hundreds of BJP Workers Join Protest

More than 500 BJP workers, including a large number of women, participated in demonstrations against the party's decision. Protesters staged road blockades at multiple locations, including Haripur Tiraha in Dabra, while slogans were raised against BJP candidate Ashutosh Tiwari.

Supporters from neighbouring districts also reached Datia to participate in the protest, further intensifying the situation.

Leaders Submit Resignations

The political fallout extended beyond street protests. BJP Datia district president Raghuveer Saran and several party office-bearers resigned from their posts in protest against the denial of a ticket to Narottam Mishra.

According to supporters, the BJP's city minister, party treasurer, and several municipal councillors have also tendered their resignations.

Narottam Had Already Begun Campaign

Dr. Narottam Mishra had already launched his election campaign after the bypoll was announced. He had purchased nomination papers, addressed public meetings, and sought public support before the party announced Ashutosh Tiwari as its official candidate.

The BJP declared Tiwari's candidature after legal developments relating to the by-election.

Administration Tightens Security

As the situation deteriorated, authorities deployed additional police personnel across the district and sought reinforcement from the Police Headquarters (PHQ). Security was intensified around the BJP office, where nearly 250 party workers were prevented from leaving as a precautionary measure.

Traffic on the Gwalior–Jhansi route was diverted, while police from Datia and Gwalior jointly managed the movement of vehicles.

District Collector Swapnil Wankhede said the administration had exercised restraint despite the violence but warned that strict action would be taken if law and order was disturbed again.

Markets Shut, Political Activity Intensifies

Several markets in Datia remained closed on Saturday morning as trader associations extended support to the protest. Meanwhile, Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) chief and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad is scheduled to address a public meeting in support of the party's candidate later in the day.

With campaigning intensifying and political tensions rising, the Datia Assembly by-election has quickly become one of the most closely watched electoral contests in Madhya Pradesh.

Four suspected members of the Deepak Nandal gang were killed and another was critically injured in a late-night encounter with Gurugram Police after an alleged extortion attempt at the residence of a property dealer in the city's Sushant Lok area. Three police personnel, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), also sustained bullet injuries during the exchange of fire.

According to police, the gunfight took place around 11:30 pm on Thursday in Sushant Lok Phase-2, where the accused allegedly entered the house of property dealer Vishal Berry, held him hostage and demanded several crores of rupees as extortion money.

Hostage Situation Triggered Police Action

Police said Vishal Berry, whose father was the founder of SGT University, allegedly received extortion threats from the Deepak Nandal gang. When he reportedly refused to pay the demanded amount, five armed men entered his residence and opened fire.

Family members alerted the police, following which Crime Branch teams rushed to the spot. According to ACP Sadar Dharamveer Singh, the accused allegedly fired at the police team when asked to surrender, leading to a retaliatory exchange of fire.

More than 20 rounds were reportedly fired during the encounter.

Four Accused Killed, One Critical

Five suspected gang members sustained bullet injuries during the gunfight. Doctors later declared four of them dead, while the fifth accused remains in critical condition at a hospital.

Police have yet to officially establish the identities of all the deceased. However, investigators said one of the deceased was from Fatehabad, while the injured accused has been identified as Shivam, a resident of Kota Bisar in Gurugram.

Authorities have sealed the encounter site and launched a detailed investigation.

Three Policemen Injured

The exchange of fire also left three police personnel injured.

Those hurt include:

• Constable Manjeet

• Constable Shamsher

All three were admitted to Medanta Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Police said their condition is being monitored.

Scorpio SUV, Weapons Seized

Investigators recovered multiple firearms from the accused and seized the black Scorpio SUV allegedly used during the attack. The vehicle sustained damage during the exchange of fire, with its windshield shattered by bullets.

Forensic teams are examining the vehicle, recovered weapons and other evidence collected from the scene.

Deepak Nandal Gang Under Scanner

Police suspect all five accused were associated with the Deepak Nandal gang, which investigators believe operates through handlers based abroad.

According to ACP Dharamveer Singh, Vishal Berry had allegedly been receiving extortion threats from the gang before Thursday night's attack.

Investigators are now gathering information about Deepak Nandal's network, his associates and possible links to other organised crime cases.

Property Dealer Being Questioned

Police are also questioning Vishal Berry to establish the sequence of events leading to the attack, including when the alleged extortion demands were first made and the amount sought by the gang.

Officials said the investigation is focusing on the criminal backgrounds of the accused, the origin of the weapons recovered and whether additional members of the gang were involved in planning the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Auckland on Friday for the final leg of his three-nation tour, where he was warmly received by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. The talks are expected to focus on strengthening economic ties, enhancing bilateral trade and deepening cooperation in areas including technology, agriculture, education, clean energy and regional security.

Prime Minister Modi's visit is being described as historic, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in around 40 years. The last Indian Prime Minister to visit the country was Rajiv Gandhi in 1986.

The visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to bilateral relations and open new avenues for cooperation in multiple sectors.

Australia Leg Focused on Strategic Partnerships

Before arriving in New Zealand, Prime Minister Modi concluded the Australian leg of his tour, where India and Australia announced a series of agreements covering defence, trade, critical minerals, space cooperation and energy.

Following talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne, the two leaders announced plans to jointly develop a Critical Minerals Corridor, while Australia also agreed to host a space tracking terminal on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands to support India's Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission.

The two countries also finalised a uranium cooperation agreement, further strengthening their strategic partnership.

Visit to Melbourne Cricket Ground

During his stay in Australia, Prime Minister Modi visited the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) alongside Prime Minister Albanese and former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh.

At the venue, Modi announced that the opening match of Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) this December would be played in Chennai, marking the first time the Australian domestic T20 league will stage a match in India.

The Prime Minister also addressed a gathering of nearly 30,000 members of the Indian community in Melbourne, where he highlighted the growing partnership between India and Australia and praised Australia's decision to restrict social media access for children below the age of 16.

With his arrival in Auckland, Prime Minister Modi now begins the final phase of his foreign tour, which is expected to focus on expanding India's engagement with New Zealand through stronger economic cooperation, strategic dialogue and people-to-people ties.

Twenty-three employees responsible for counting donations at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya have resigned simultaneously, citing a sharp increase in workload without any corresponding increase in salary. The resignations come amid the ongoing investigation into the alleged donation theft case, which has intensified scrutiny of the temple's donation management system.

The employees said changes in the pattern of donations following the alleged theft have significantly slowed the counting process. According to them, offerings now contain a much higher volume of ₹10 and ₹20 notes, replacing the larger denomination currency notes that were previously more common.

Earlier, staff members used to prepare 70 to 80 bundles of ₹500 notes during a shift, allowing the counting process to be completed relatively quickly. They now manage only around 15 bundles of ₹500 notes, while processing a substantially larger number of smaller denomination notes, increasing the time required to complete the work.

Longer Working Hours Trigger Resignations

The resigning employees also alleged that their working hours have increased following changes in the counting schedule.

According to the staff, donation counting was previously carried out in two shifts, with each employee working approximately six hours. The system has now been replaced with a single shift running from 9 am to 6 pm, extending working hours without any revision in wages.

They said the increased workload, combined with unchanged salaries, compelled them to submit their resignations. Following the resignations, only 13 donation-counting employees remain with the bank responsible for handling the temple's offerings.

Supreme Court to Hear Case on July 13

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the Ram Temple donation theft case on July 13. A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant will take up three petitions related to the matter.

The petitions seek a CBI investigation, constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the formation of an expert committee to review the management of donations and related administrative systems at the temple.

The hearing comes as investigations into the alleged misappropriation of donations continue and several accused remain under judicial custody.

Investigation Continues

Police have already arrested multiple accused in connection with the alleged donation theft. During recent custodial interrogation, investigators reportedly recovered cash, jewellery and a vehicle allegedly linked to the case. Authorities have also seized documents relating to property transactions as part of the ongoing investigation.

The accused are expected to be produced before the court after the completion of their custody period, while investigators continue to examine financial transactions and other evidence connected to the alleged theft.

Political Reactions Intensify

The case has triggered political reactions across party lines. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to hear the matter and called for an independent investigation. He questioned why an FIR had not initially been registered before the Special Investigation Team began its inquiry.

Congress leaders also demanded an impartial probe, alleging that the investigation should be monitored independently. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, while addressing a public gathering in Basti, accused opposition parties of politicising issues related to the Ram Temple and defended his government's handling of Ayodhya's development.

Concern Beyond India

The controversy has also drawn attention from Janaki Temple in Janakpur, Nepal, traditionally regarded as the maternal home of Goddess Sita.

Mahant Roshan Das expressed concern over the alleged donation theft, describing the development as deeply distressing. He said such an incident had never been associated with a temple dedicated to Lord Ram and urged strict action against those found responsible. A delegation from Janakpur is expected to visit Ayodhya during the holy month of Shravan to offer prayers and express solidarity.

As the Supreme Court prepares to hear the matter next week, the donation theft case continues to raise questions about financial oversight, security and administrative management at one of India's most prominent religious sites.

The Delhi High Court on Friday upheld Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav's conviction in seven cheque bounce cases and sentenced him to three months' simple imprisonment. The court directed that all seven sentences would run concurrently, meaning the actor will serve a total of three months in jail. 

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma dismissed the revision petitions filed by Yadav and other accused challenging the trial court's verdict, observing that the actor had repeatedly failed to honour settlement commitments despite being granted multiple opportunities by the court. 

Court Rejects Plea for Relief

The High Court noted that it had earlier extended relief to Yadav after he expressed willingness to settle the dispute amicably. However, despite several extensions and assurances given before the court, the promised payments were not made within the stipulated timelines.

According to the judgment, the court found no merit in the explanations offered for the repeated delays in complying with settlement terms. It held that the trial court had correctly appreciated the evidence and there was no reason to interfere with the conviction under the Negotiable Instruments Act. 

Compensation Directions Issued

Apart from the jail sentence, the High Court directed Rajpal Yadav to pay compensation to the complainant in all seven cheque dishonour cases. The court observed that the compensation had been calculated after taking into account the amounts already deposited by the actor during earlier proceedings.

The judgment also clarified that the payments already made by Yadav would be adjusted while determining his remaining financial liability. 

Case Linked to Film Financing

The legal dispute dates back to 2010, when Rajpal Yadav borrowed approximately ₹5 crore from Murli Projects Pvt. Ltd. to finance his directorial debut film, Ata Pata Laapata. The film failed commercially, leaving the actor unable to repay the loan as agreed.

Over the years, interest, penalties and delayed payments reportedly increased the outstanding liability to around ₹9 crore. Cheques issued towards repayment were dishonoured due to insufficient funds, resulting in multiple criminal complaints under the Negotiable Instruments Act. 

Previous Opportunities Not Utilised

Court records show that Yadav had earlier secured interim relief after assuring the High Court that he would settle the dispute. The matter was even referred for mediation, and several deadlines were granted to facilitate an amicable resolution.

However, the High Court observed that despite repeated opportunities, the settlement could not be completed. The court also rejected arguments citing technical issues in payment instruments, stating that such explanations could not justify continued non-compliance with judicial directions. 

Legal Battle Continues

The verdict marks the latest development in a legal battle that has continued for several years. The High Court's decision affirms the trial court's findings while reducing the effective imprisonment to three months, with all sentences running simultaneously.

The ruling also reinforces the legal principle that repeated failure to honour court-approved settlement commitments can attract criminal consequences under the provisions governing cheque dishonour cases. 

The southwest monsoon continued to batter large parts of northern India on Friday, triggering widespread flooding, landslides and rain-related deaths across several states, even as meteorologists linked the changing weather pattern to the influence of Super Typhoon Bavi over the western Pacific.

Heavy rainfall affected Delhi, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, disrupting transport, damaging infrastructure and prompting rescue operations. At least 13 people lost their lives in rain and lightning-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, while authorities remained on high alert in several flood-prone districts.

According to weather reports, the formation of Super Typhoon Bavi has temporarily weakened the southwest monsoon current over parts of the Indian subcontinent. Despite this, localized heavy rainfall has continued due to active low-pressure systems and moisture-laden winds, resulting in intense downpours across northern and central India.

Delhi Witnesses Waterlogging

The national capital recorded persistent rainfall over the past 24 hours, leading to severe waterlogging in several areas. Tukhmirpur received nearly 160 mm of rainfall, making it one of the wettest locations in the city.

Major roads, including Vikas Marg, Sangam Vihar, Dwarka, Munirka and areas near New Delhi Railway Station, remained inundated for several hours, slowing traffic movement. Flooding was also reported around Ghazipur Mandi, while a tree uprooted during the storm fell onto a parked vehicle.

Uttarakhand Pilgrimage Routes Hit

In Uttarakhand, continuous rainfall caused significant damage to road connectivity in the hill districts.

Nearly 100 metres of the Yamunotri Highway in Uttarkashi was washed away, leaving around 1,000 pilgrims stranded. Authorities have deployed teams to restore connectivity while ensuring the safety of stranded devotees.

The Adi Kailash route in Pithoragarh was closed after repeated rockfalls, and landslides blocked sections of the Gangotri National Highway. Rescue teams cleared debris from affected stretches to restore traffic.

In Haridwar, several low-lying areas remained submerged under three to four feet of water. A tourist's SUV became trapped in the Neeldhara River and was pulled out after a two-hour rescue operation using heavy machinery. In nearby Rishikesh, local residents rescued a scooter rider who was swept away while attempting to cross a swollen river.

Rain Claims Lives in UP and Bihar

Rain-related incidents claimed 10 lives in Uttar Pradesh on Friday.

In Bulandshahr, two members of the same family died after an old mosque wall collapsed during heavy rainfall. In Hardoi, two sisters were swept away by a swollen river, while several other fatalities were reported from separate incidents linked to collapsing structures, drowning and electrocution.

In neighbouring Bihar, one person died after being struck by lightning in Gopalganj.

State disaster response teams have been deployed in vulnerable districts, while district administrations have advised residents to avoid waterlogged areas and overflowing rivers.

Rajasthan and Himachal Also Affected

Heavy rain also disrupted normal life in Rajasthan, where a house collapsed in Dholpur, trapping six people beneath the debris. Rescue operations were launched immediately.

The adverse weather affected railway services as well, with six trains cancelled and several others running behind schedule.

In Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, incessant rain caused a retaining wall to collapse, blocking roads and leaving several vehicles stranded. Local authorities said timely action prevented a major accident, while electricity officials assessed damage to power infrastructure.

Authorities Continue Monitoring Situation

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heavy rainfall may continue in several northern states over the coming days, urging people living near rivers, landslide-prone areas and low-lying regions to remain cautious.

Disaster management agencies have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and to follow local administration advisories as rescue and restoration work continues across affected regions.

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced plans to return to Bangladesh in December despite facing a death sentence and what she described as serious threats to her life. In an interview with Reuters, the ousted leader said she intends to return voluntarily along with senior leaders of the banned Awami League and surrender before the country's courts.

Hasina said she was fully aware of the risks surrounding her return, including the possibility of arrest or assassination, but maintained that she wanted to face the legal process in her homeland.

"They may arrest me on my return; they may even kill me. Still, I have to go," Reuters quoted Hasina as saying. She added that she wished to die in Bangladesh, where her parents are buried, if that became her fate.

Plans to Return Voluntarily

The former prime minister said Bangladesh's interim authorities have repeatedly sought her extradition from India since she left the country in 2024. However, she stressed that she would not wait for any extradition process and would instead return on her own.

Hasina said she had not held discussions with any foreign government regarding her return and denied any behind-the-scenes negotiations with authorities in Dhaka.

According to her, democracy, voting rights, political freedom for the Awami League and justice cannot be decided through secret talks.

She declined to reveal the exact date of her arrival or specify the court where she plans to surrender but expressed confidence that the judicial proceedings would expose what she described as an unfair legal process.

Awami League Leaders to Accompany Her

Hasina also revealed that several senior Awami League leaders living in exile are expected to return with her and surrender before the courts.

Among those planning to return is former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who has also reportedly been sentenced to death.

She said thousands of party workers and leaders continue to face legal cases, forcing many to remain in hiding. According to Hasina, she has urged party members to return home together and face the legal process collectively.

Political Crisis Forced Exile

Hasina fled Bangladesh in 2024 after weeks of nationwide student-led protests escalated into a major political crisis that brought an end to her long tenure in office.

Later, Bangladesh's war crimes tribunal sentenced her to death in absentia after convicting her over the deadly crackdown on protesters during the unrest. Hasina has consistently denied all charges against her.

Following the political transition, the Awami League was banned in Bangladesh.

The former prime minister also disclosed that she has continued to engage with party workers through online meetings covering 125 of Bangladesh's 300 parliamentary constituencies as part of efforts to reorganise the Awami League while in exile.

Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is expected to make his first public appearance on Saturday, leading a memorial ceremony for his father, the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, at the Hazrat Masoumeh Shrine in Qom, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency.
