The international BRICS Agriculture Conference commenced in Indore on Tuesday, bringing together agriculture ministers, senior officials, and experts from nearly 20 countries. Hosted by India in its capacity as BRICS president, the five-day event from June 9 to 13 is expected to shape future global cooperation in food security and sustainable farming.

The gathering assumes significance as BRICS nations collectively account for a substantial share of the world’s agricultural resources. Central Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted that the group holds about 42% of global agricultural land, 68% of agricultural holdings, and 42% of food production, positioning the Indore meet as a key platform for influencing worldwide agricultural policies.

India-Russia Bilateral Engagement

In the first session on Tuesday, a bilateral meeting between India and Russia took centre stage. Discussions focused on deepening bilateral cooperation, expanding agricultural trade, and promoting technical collaboration for sustainable development. Officials explored strengthening food supply chains, improving market access, and advancing joint research on climate-resilient farming practices. Sources familiar with the meeting described the talks as constructive, reflecting a shared commitment to bolster strategic partnership in agriculture.

Focus on Key Global Challenges

The conference will address four major themes: food security, nutrition and livelihoods; agricultural trade and international cooperation; climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture; and innovation and partnerships in agri-food systems. Particular attention is being paid to challenges faced by small and marginal farmers, access to credit, market linkages, and adoption of modern technologies.

Detailed Schedule for Ministerial-Level Discussions

Over the coming days, the Agriculture Working Group will deliberate on a draft joint declaration. The ministerial dialogue is scheduled for June 12, with the theme ‘Ensuring Future Food Security through Small Farmers, Women and Youth’. On June 13, the main BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ meeting will conclude the event with the adoption of key recommendations.

Delegates are also set to participate in a symbolic ‘BRICS Vatika’ initiative, involving collective tree planting to underscore commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Cultural Immersion for International Delegates

Foreign participants will get a taste of Indore and the Malwa region’s rich heritage. Planned visits include Rajwada Palace, Chhappan Dukan, Sarafa Bazaar, and the historic Mandu fort. One delegate group had already enjoyed local cuisine at Chhappan Dukan a day before the formal start.

For Madhya Pradesh, the event presents a major opportunity to position itself as a hub for global agriculture, food processing, and investment. Experts believe successful outcomes could boost the state’s export potential and attract new collaborations in agri-innovation.

Looking Ahead

As the conference progresses, expectations are high for concrete outcomes on reducing food loss, tackling climate change impacts, and empowering women and youth in agriculture. The final document from the ministerial meeting is likely to outline actionable steps for enhanced BRICS cooperation in the sector.

The Indore BRICS Agriculture Conference comes at a time when global food systems face multiple pressures, from climate variability to supply chain disruptions. India’s proactive hosting reflects its growing role in shaping multilateral agricultural agendas.

Viral video shows staff clicking photos with saree-clad visitor despite ban on photography inside Ujjain temple premises

A young man dressed as Allu Arjun’s character from the film Pushpa — complete with saree, blouse, payal, lemon garland, and bangles — walked into the Mahakal temple here for a VIP darshan, triggering a row over security lapses. The incident, which took place on February 5, came to light after videos surfaced on social media over the weekend.

The temple management has since removed a supervisor after an internal inquiry.

Viral visuals show protocol breach

In the clips circulating on Instagram and Facebook, the man is seen moving through different parts of the temple complex. A staff member escorts him to the Ganesh Mandapam, treating him like a VIP devotee. Security personnel and temple committee employees did not stop him. Instead, they posed for photographs with him.

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the Mahakal temple premises. The responsibility of enforcing this ban lies with the very staff and guards who are now seen violating it.

What the video shows

The young man is dressed in a saree and blouse, with payal on his feet, a lemon garland and necklace around his neck, tops in his ears, a nose ring, and bangles on his wrists. He mimics the mannerisms of the Pushpa character in several clips.

According to sources familiar with the matter, he did not enter like an ordinary pilgrim. He was given special access, something regular devotees are not entitled to. The videos also show him filming himself inside the temple, which is not allowed for common visitors.

Social media backlash

The visuals, uploaded from an account named Ankit Astoliya on Instagram and Facebook, quickly went viral. Several other videos in the same outfit are available on that profile.

Users have criticised the temple administration for allowing such conduct. Many questioned how the man managed to enter with a full costume and accessories without being stopped at any checkpoint. Others pointed out that the staff’s willingness to take selfies with him shows a casual approach to protocol.

Official action taken

Mahakal temple administrator Pratham Kaushik confirmed that the video dates back to February 5. “After the visuals came to our notice, an inquiry was conducted. The concerned supervisor has been removed from his post,” he said.

Kaushik added that granting special permission to anyone inside the temple premises, or allowing photography and videography, goes against the established rules and decorum of the shrine.

Prior restrictions on photography

This is not the first time the Mahakal temple has faced controversy over mobile phone use. While devotees are routinely asked to deposit their phones before entering, instances of unauthorised recording have been reported earlier as well. The latest incident has once again raised questions about enforcement of existing rules.

Sources indicate that the temple trust may now review its security deployment and issue fresh guidelines to prevent such breaches in the future.

A late-evening earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale rattled parts of Kessla block in Narmadapuram district on Monday, briefly worrying residents though no injuries or structural damage have been reported.

Felt across villages
Initial reports and local residents said the tremor was felt in Chichwani and nearby Chhitapura village, around 9:38–9:39 pm IST. “I was sleeping on the terrace when I felt a short but sharp vibration — it felt like the house shook for a few seconds,” said a resident of Chhitapura who requested anonymity. Several other villagers told reporters they stepped out briefly before returning inside when they found nothing broken.

Seismic data and timing
According to updates on the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and National Centre for Seismology (NCS) websites, the event was recorded at 9:39 pm IST on 8 June 2026. The epicentre was logged at latitude 22.367°N and longitude 77.688°E, with a focal depth of about 10 km. The measured magnitude of 3.8 places the tremor in the light category, which typically produces noticeable shaking but rarely causes significant damage.

Official responses
Local officials confirmed receipt of initial information. “We received reports of a tremor in the Kessla block. There are no immediate reports of casualties or damage,” said Nilesh Sharma, SDM of Narmadapuram, adding that teams had been asked to check vulnerable structures and report any incidents. A member of the Janpad Panchayat, Santosh Sallam, said he visited affected habitations late on Monday to reassure residents and gather details.

Ground-level reactions
Several villagers described a momentary rush of alarm. “People came out of their homes and stood on the road for some minutes,” a shopkeeper in Chichwani said. Many returned indoors when they saw no visible cracks or fallen objects. Social media posts from local users circulated short clips and messages about the shaking, but those posts contained no evidence of damage.

Why magnitude matters
Seismologists say quakes around magnitude 3–4 are common in tectonically active parts of India and usually felt locally. “A magnitude 3.8 event at a shallow depth like 10 km can be clearly felt by people near the epicentre. Structural damage is unlikely unless buildings are already weakened,” an earthquake researcher not connected with the event told this newsroom. The central Indian region has a mixed seismic profile, with most damaging quakes historically concentrated in other zones, though isolated shallow tremors are possible.

Checks underway
Local administration and panchayat officials said they were performing a quick assessment of public infrastructure — schools, health centres and older masonry houses — to ensure there were no hidden damages. “We have asked gram sevaks and patwaris to report by morning. If anything is found, we will act immediately,” the SDM said. No emergency services were mobilised overnight.

Public advice
Authorities reminded residents of basic safety steps: move to open spaces if you feel shaking, avoid standing under heavy fixtures, and check for gas leaks or electrical faults after tremors. The NCS and IMD continue to update their earthquake bulletins online and through official channels.

Context and outlook
While the tremor caused momentary alarm, its light magnitude and shallow depth explain why the shaking was noticeable but not destructive. The district administration will continue routine checks, and seismological agencies will monitor for any aftershocks, although aftershock probability following small quakes is generally low. Residents said normal life resumed by early Tuesday morning, with many sharing a mild sense of unease but no calls for evacuation.

The scale of the multi-crore gold scam involving the proprietors of Vaishno Jewellers in Gwalior’s DD Nagar has expanded significantly. Following the arrest of the prime accused, Sachin Soni, and his father, Vinod Soni, from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, a wave of new victims has emerged.

Long queues of defrauded residents were seen at the Maharajpura police station, with local authorities confirming that at least 14 fresh complaints were registered on Monday alone. The total number of official cases registered against the father-son duo has now crossed 16, and investigators believe the numbers will continue to climb.

Trust Built Over Years Shattered

Initial police investigations reveal that the accused had meticulously built a solid reputation in the local market over several years. Known for their affable demeanor, they easily convinced residents to hand over cash and family heirlooms under various pretexts.

According to officials, the duo accepted gold for hallmarking, polishing, making new ornaments, and as collateral for loans. They also lured several victims by promising to help them retrieve gold mortgaged with banks or private lenders at lower interest rates. Once they amassed a massive cache of gold and cash, they shuttered the shop and vanished.

Property Businessman First Target

The investigation indicates that the son-and-father team commenced their run with a high-value target, allegedly swindling a local property businessman of gold valued at approximately ₹80 lakh. It was after this major fraud that the complaints began to trickle into local stations.

The Gwalior police, with critical technical support from the Cyber Cell, traced the missing jewelers to Meerut. During a late-night raid on Wednesday, both Sachin and Vinod Soni were taken into custody. Police recovered 971 grams of gold jewelry, estimated to be worth around ₹1.5 crore, from their possession.

Farmers Lead Early Complaints

The legal crackdown gained momentum when three local farmers approached the Maharajpura police station right after news of the arrests broke. Based on their statements, formal FIRs were filed on Sunday.

One victim, Dharamveer Singh Gurjar from Maharajpura, recounted his ordeal to the police. He had handed over 2.5 tolas of old gold and ₹65,000 to Sachin Soni to craft a new chain. "When I went to collect it on May 28, Sachin told me the hallmarking process was still pending and asked me to return later," Gurjar stated. Shortly after that interaction, the shop was locked up and the owners disappeared.

Escalating List Of Victims

The diversity of the victims highlights how deeply the fraud penetrated the local community:

Rabbi Khan & Shabbir: Pledged a total of 885.7 grams of gold ornaments with Vinod Soni. Despite offering to repay the loan amount, their gold was never returned.

Sandeep Singh Bhadauria: Defrauded of ₹17.50 lakh taken as cash advance for new ornaments.

Ghanshyam Sharma: Lost ₹17.00 lakh under the guise of business investments and jewelry orders.

Vinay Chaturvedi: Cheated of ₹11.23 lakh in advance bookings for new designs.

Rahul Gurjar: Lost a gold necklace alongside ₹6.90 lakh in cash.

Ravikant Mishra & Atul Pal: Duped of ₹5.00 lakh and ₹2.00 lakh respectively for pending jewelry orders.

Police Seeking Further Remand

Sources familiar with the matter said that previous cases had already been lodged against the duo at the Kotwali police station following a complaint by Mansingh Gurjar.

Maharajpura Police Station In-charge Yashwant Goyal confirmed that the investigation is expanding rapidly. "The number of complaints is rising by the day. New FIRs are being registered as more victims step forward with proof of transactions," Goyal said. The police intend to seek further remand of the accused in connection with the fresh complaints to recover the remaining stolen gold and cash.

Fraud Allegation Surfaces

A startling case of alleged land fraud has come to light in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna, where an 85-year-old retired railway employee was reportedly declared dead in official records despite being alive. The alleged manipulation was carried out to facilitate the transfer of a valuable ancestral property, prompting district authorities to order a detailed investigation.

The case revolves around Ishwardeen Soni, a resident of Kamta Tola in Satna, who owns around 0.1680 hectares of ancestral land in the Kothi area. According to the complaint submitted to authorities, government records were altered to show that he had died more than a decade ago, paving the way for changes in land ownership.

Death Certificate Under Scrutiny

The controversy began after a death certificate was allegedly obtained in June 2024 through questionable means. Documents submitted before the municipal authorities reportedly stated that Ishwardeen Soni had died following a prolonged illness.

Investigators are examining how the application was processed and approved despite the individual being alive. Officials are also reviewing the verification process that led to the issuance of the certificate and subsequent revenue record changes.

Role of Local Officials

According to the complaint, several local functionaries allegedly played a role in validating the claim of death. A ward councillor reportedly issued a panchanama stating that the elderly man had died on July 18, 2015. The document was allegedly supported by signatures from witnesses.

Based on the submitted records, municipal officials initiated verification procedures. The matter was subsequently processed through the local administrative system, eventually resulting in official registration of the reported death.

Authorities are now examining whether due procedures were followed and whether there was any deliberate suppression of facts during verification.

Land Ownership Changed

The alleged fraud did not end with the issuance of the death certificate. Revenue records were reportedly altered to show that the elderly man was deceased and had no legal heirs.

Officials said the ancestral land was subsequently transferred in the names of relatives. The complaint further alleges that a local revenue official played a significant role in facilitating the mutation process. The land was later reportedly sold to the official’s spouse for around Rs 9 lakh.

Family members maintain that the claims in the records are entirely false. Ishwardeen Soni is alive and has three sons, making the declaration of him as childless and deceased highly contentious.

Son Approaches Authorities

The alleged irregularities came to light after Rajesh Soni, one of Ishwardeen’s sons, discovered discrepancies in official records. He filed written complaints with the district administration and local police authorities, seeking action against those involved.

The complaint triggered immediate attention from officials, leading to scrutiny of municipal and revenue department records linked to the case.

Collector Orders Probe

Satna Collector Dr. Satish Kumar S has ordered a detailed inquiry into the matter. Officials said all relevant documents, including the death certificate, verification reports and land mutation records, will be examined as part of the investigation.

The inquiry is expected to determine whether procedural lapses occurred or whether there was deliberate collusion among individuals involved in processing the documents.

Wider Concerns Raised

The Satna land grab case has once again highlighted concerns over document fraud and manipulation of land records. Legal experts note that fraudulent mutations and forged certificates can lead to prolonged property disputes, particularly in cases involving ancestral assets.

For now, the administration’s focus remains on verifying the authenticity of the records and fixing accountability. Further action is likely once the inquiry report is submitted and examined by district authorities.

A theft was reported at the official government residence of Mauganj MLA Pradeep Patel in Bhopal's Arera Hills area on Saturday, with the legislator's personal assistant losing a laptop, cash, ATM cards, a pen drive, and important assembly-related documents to unidentified thieves. The Arera Hills police have registered an FIR and launched an investigation.

PA Left Room for Two Hours

According to the complaint filed by Dr. Ramanand Patel, personal assistant to MLA Pradeep Patel, the incident occurred on June 7. Patel had travelled from Mauganj to Bhopal that day and was staying in Room No. 74, Block 3 of the MLA rest house.

Around 10:30 in the morning, he stepped out briefly to fetch water, latching the door from outside. He then went over to Room No. 39 to meet a colleague, where he remained for roughly two hours.

Almirah Broken, Valuables Gone

When Dr. Patel returned to his room at around 12:30 pm, he found his laptop missing. The almirah inside the room had been broken into. From the bag kept inside, thieves had taken a pen drive, two ATM cards, an undisclosed amount of cash, a Titan/Timex watch, and several documents connected to assembly work.

The stolen laptop was valued at approximately Rs 25,000. More significantly, both the laptop and the pen drive reportedly contained sensitive data related to Vidhan Sabha proceedings — a detail that has added urgency to the investigation.

Security of MLA Colony Under Scanner

The daylight theft inside a secured legislator colony has triggered uncomfortable questions about the adequacy of security arrangements in the area. The rest house, located in one of Bhopal's more closely monitored localities, is home to elected representatives from across Madhya Pradesh when they are in the state capital.

That a theft of this nature could occur mid-morning, without anyone apparently noticing, has drawn criticism and raised concerns about surveillance and patrolling protocols within the premises.

CCTV Footage Being Examined

Arera Hills police confirmed that a case has been registered against unknown accused under relevant sections, and the investigation is currently underway. Investigators are now examining CCTV footage from within and around the rest house complex to identify the suspects.

No arrests have been made so far, and the police have not yet issued any description of potential suspects. Officials said further details would be shared as the probe progresses.

Monsoon in Chhattisgarh: Entry in 2-3 Days

It is the kind of late evening shower that offers little real relief. Short and sharp, it left the streets of Bhilai and Raipur damp but did little to move the needle on the mercury.

Meteorologists said these isolated spells mark the beginning of a broader transition, with conditions now aligning for a more definitive change.

“The southwest monsoon is expected to advance into parts of Chhattisgarh over the next two to three days,” an official from the India Meteorological Department said. The weather bureau has indicated that the monsoon is likely to pick up pace, bringing more organised rainfall activity across the state by the weekend.

Five-day warning issued

The IMD has issued a forecast predicting thunderstorm activity across many districts over the next five days. Gusty winds reaching 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are expected, accompanied by lightning and brief spells of rain. Officials said multiple weather systems, including cyclonic circulations and a trough line passing through the state, are pulling moisture into the region and driving the current pre-monsoon conditions.

While the rain has brought some cloud cover, maximum temperatures have not seen any significant drop. Raipur’s Mana area recorded the highest temperature at 42.6 degrees Celsius over the past 24 hours, while the coolest spot was Pendra Road at 23.2 degrees.

Scattered showers across districts

On Monday evening, residents in parts of Raipur and Durg districts saw a sudden change in weather. The Bhilai township in Durg experienced a spell of heavy rain, while several pockets in the capital also received short-lived showers.

The weather department has said that monsoon conditions are becoming favourable for further advance into Chhattisgarh, with officials pointing to increased moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal. However, widespread monsoon conditions are yet to set in across the state.

Temperature remains high

Despite the cloud cover and intermittent rain, the heat continues to persist in most parts. Rajnandgaon remained the hottest location in the state, recording a maximum of 43.5 degrees Celsius. Ambikapur saw the lowest minimum temperature at 24.5 degrees.

For Raipur, the forecast for the coming days indicates partly cloudy skies with the possibility of thunderstorms and dust storms. Humidity levels, however, are expected to remain high, ensuring that discomfort levels stay elevated despite the rain.

What lies ahead

The IMD has maintained that the southwest monsoon is progressing steadily across the country. Officials said conditions are favourable for the monsoon to move into remaining parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Vidarbha over the next 48 to 72 hours.

For now, the state remains in a waiting period. The pre-monsoon showers offer glimpses of what is to come, but the real change will only arrive when the monsoon current establishes itself fully. That, according to the weather bureau, is now just days away.

In two separate incidents over the past 30 hours, wild elephant attacks in Chhattisgarh left four people dead, officials said on Tuesday. The deaths, reported from Balrampur and Korea districts, have prompted stepped-up forest department patrols and local warnings to residents.

Elephant tramples couple

What happened: Early Tuesday morning, a couple walking toward a nearby forest in Rajpur range of Balrampur district were trampled to death after encountering a lone tusker, forest officials said.

Where and when: The attack occurred around 5am near Bandhapara in Kundi village, about 200 metres from the victims’ home.

Who: The deceased were identified as Juthan Gond (65) and his wife Sundari Bai (56), residents of Kundi, according to the forest department.

Sequence: Initial reports indicate the pair set out from home toward the forest when they came across a solitary male elephant. “They tried to run, but the animal chased and trampled them,” a forest official at the scene said. Locals informed the forest staff; the SDO (Forest) R.S.L. Srivastava, ranger Ajay Verma and a team reached the site, examined the scene and sent the bodies for post-mortem.

Forest response: Ranger Verma said the deceased were attacked by a tusker that had separated from a herd of five elephants seen roaming the Kalyanpur forest area. “The animal moved toward Kundi late last night and was still in nearby forest this morning. We have increased surveillance and are advising villagers to stay alert,” he added.

Relief announced: The forest department said it has provided immediate ex gratia of Rs 25,000 each to the families and will process further assistance as per rules.

Workers killed on roadside

What happened: In an unrelated late-night incident in Korea district, two labourers sleeping beside a road under construction were trampled by a wild elephant, officials said.

Where and when: The attack took place near Devseel basti on the Ramgarh–Kotadol road stretch, around 11:30pm on Sunday, within the Sonhat range bordering the Guru Ghasidas Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve.

Who: The victims were named as Gaurav (22) and Amar Singh (35), both residents of Gram Nagar and employed on the road project.

Sequence: Sources familiar with the matter said a lone tusker — apparently separated from an eight-elephant herd observed in the tiger reserve area — approached the sleeping workers and attacked them. Other labourers working at the site ran to safety and alerted locals and forest teams. Gaurav died at the spot; Amar Singh, critically injured, died while being transported to Sonhat hospital.

Forest action: Ranger Rajaram said the separated tusker carried out the attack. “An elephant herd has been moving in the reserve for days; one animal strayed from the group and reached the road work site late at night. We have warned nearby hamlets and asked construction crews to avoid sleeping outdoors,” he said.

Local impact and warnings

Residents and workers in both districts reported heightened fear after the incidents. The forest department said teams are conducting regular foot and vehicle patrols, using public announcements and community volunteers to spread warnings. Temporary movement restrictions in fringe areas may be implemented if the animals continue to approach villages.

Background context

Human-elephant conflicts have risen in parts of central India as expanding agriculture, road projects and seasonal water levels push elephants out of traditional corridors. Officials noted the recent movements of herds in Kalyanpur and the tiger reserve area, and attributed some incidents to solitary tuskers separating from groups at night.

What’s next

Forest officials said they will monitor the animals with intensified patrolling and coordinate with local administrations to reduce risk to villagers. Post-mortems and standard investigations into each attack are complete, and authorities are exploring longer-term measures — from night-time movement advisories to temporary barriers — to prevent similar tragedies.

Nearby districts have been asked to share real-time information on elephant movements. “We are advising people not to venture into forested patches alone, and construction crews must arrange safe sleeping facilities away from work sites,” a senior forest official said.

Dehradun and Bareilly laboratory reports reveal severe infections caused the deaths of four elephant calves within 25 days in Raigarh.

Deadly infections hit herd

Laboratory test results from premium research facilities in Dehradun and Bareilly have confirmed that severe bacterial and viral infections led to the sudden deaths of elephant calves in Chhattisgarh. According to forest department officials, detailed analysis of tissue samples revealed that one calf succumbed to hepatitis—a debilitating liver infection—while another died of septicemia, a severe bloodstream infection. This follows an earlier confirmation where a third calf from the same region was found to have died from pneumonia.

Short window, multiple casualties

The rapid loss of wildlife has sent shockwaves through the local forest administration. Between May 8 and June 1, a total of four young calves lost their lives within a narrow 25-day window across the Raigarh and Dharamjaigarh forest divisions. Ground teams initially grew alarmed when carcasses began appearing near local water bodies and marshy patches. Just over a week ago, the body of a baby elephant was recovered from a pond in the Chhal forest range, triggering deep concern among conservationists.

Ground reality and maternal grief

The crisis has not just been a statistical loss but a visible tragedy on the ground. Local tracking teams recently witnessed a heartbreaking scene in the Chhal area where a mother elephant spent hours attempting to revive her dead calf. Video footage from the site showed the distressed adult using her trunk and feet to lift the young carcass out of a swampy patch. Field officials noted that the deceased calves belonged to the same resident herd, indicating that an infectious pathogen was likely circulating within the specific group.

Experts huddle for emergency meet

Anxious over the recurring deaths, the forest department convened an emergency two-day technical workshop on Friday to address disease transmission in wild herds. Wildlife scientists, veterinarians, and elephant conservation experts from multiple states traveled to Raigarh to review the autopsy findings. The sessions focused heavily on early symptom identification, sample collection protocols, and immediate field interventions to arrest the spread of internal infections within wild populations.

High-tech surveillance deployed

"The post-mortem examinations were conducted in the presence of senior wildlife scientists to rule out foul play," stated Jitendra Upadhyay, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO). "The reports clearly pinpoint internal medical complications—hepatitis and septicemia. We are now working closely with experts to draft a long-term mitigation strategy."

The forest division currently monitors a sizable population of 137 elephants, which includes 37 tuskers, 62 females, and 35 vulnerable calves.

Intensive tracking on ground

In response to the laboratory confirmations, field monitoring has been scaled up to an unprecedented level. Special tracking teams, alongside local Elephant Mitra squads, are now trailing the affected herd daily to monitor the physical health of the remaining calves. Ground units have begun deploying thermal drones during late-evening and night hours to track movement patterns without disturbing the animals. Forest guards are also using static trap cameras around known watering holes to spot any signs of sluggishness or physical distress among the juveniles early on.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances behind the incident.

A 45-year-old jawan of the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself with his service rifle inside a security camp in Chhattisgarh’s Kondagaon district late on Monday night, officials said.

The incident was reported from the Urandabeda police station limits, where the jawan was deployed as part of the 5th Battalion of the CAF. The deceased has been identified as Jogendra Netam, a resident of Badedongar area. According to officials, he had been posted at the camp around three months ago and was assigned security duties at the time of the incident.

Shot During Duty

Preliminary information suggests that Netam used his INSAS service rifle to fire at his temple while on duty. The gunshot alerted other personnel stationed in the camp, who rushed to the spot immediately.

However, by the time fellow jawans reached him, he had succumbed to his injuries. The incident triggered an immediate response from camp authorities, who informed senior security officials and the local police.

Senior Officers Reach Spot

Soon after receiving information, police officials and senior officers of the security establishment reached the camp and carried out an inspection of the scene.

Authorities conducted a preliminary examination and initiated standard legal procedures. The body was later sent for post-mortem examination, following which it is expected to be handed over to the family.

No Suicide Note Found

Investigators said no suicide note was recovered from the spot during the initial search. As a result, the exact reason behind the alleged suicide remains unclear.

Officials familiar with the investigation said all possible angles are being examined. While no conclusions have been drawn, personal stress or private issues are among the factors being looked into as part of the inquiry.

Investigation Continues

Kondagaon Superintendent of Police Pankaj Chandra said the case prima facie appears to be one of suicide. However, he noted that the circumstances leading to the incident are still under investigation.

Police teams, along with departmental authorities, are collecting information from colleagues and reviewing the jawan’s recent activities to establish a clearer picture of the events preceding the incident.

Sources said the family has been informed, and statements from those posted at the camp may form part of the ongoing investigation.

Concerns Over Personnel Wellbeing

The incident has once again drawn attention to the challenges faced by security personnel deployed in sensitive and demanding environments. While investigators have not linked the case to any specific factor, authorities are expected to examine whether personal or professional pressures played any role.

Security forces routinely conduct counselling and welfare measures for personnel, particularly those posted in remote locations. Officials indicated that a detailed inquiry report would help determine whether any additional factors contributed to the tragedy.

Similar Incident Recently Reported

The Kondagaon case comes days after another firearm-related suicide involving a security personnel was reported in neighbouring Narayanpur district. In that incident, a district force jawan allegedly shot himself with his service weapon at a camp under Kohkameta police station limits.

Officials have not indicated any connection between the two incidents. Investigations in both cases are being carried out separately.

Further details in the Kondagaon case are expected to emerge once the post-mortem report and departmental inquiry are completed.

Key Decisions Expected Today

A significant cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai is underway at the state secretariat in Nava Raipur, Raipur, with several major administrative and policy decisions likely to be formalised by day's end. The meeting has drawn considerable attention from government employees, farmers, and administrative circles alike.

Transfer Ban Likely to Be Lifted

The most closely watched agenda item is the proposed new transfer policy for state government officials and employees. The existing freeze on transfers is expected to be lifted following cabinet approval of the fresh policy framework. If cleared, large-scale postings and transfers across departments could begin shortly, ending months of administrative uncertainty for government staff across Chhattisgarh.

Farmers' Issues on the Table

Agricultural matters also figure prominently in the day's agenda. The cabinet is set to review paddy procurement at minimum support price for the upcoming Kharif marketing year, along with the custom milling policy. Additionally, the availability of fertilisers and seeds for farmers during the current Kharif season is expected to be assessed. Several proposals linked to farming and agriculture may also receive formal approval during the meeting.

CM Helpline 1076 Launches Today

Coinciding with the cabinet session, the state government is launching its much-anticipated CM Helpline 1076 service. The rollout follows the conclusion of Suhasaan Tihar, the state's governance outreach initiative. Through the toll-free number 1076, residents across Chhattisgarh can now register complaints and grievances directly with the government.

Beyond phone calls, the helpline will be accessible via a dedicated web portal, a mobile application, and WhatsApp — broadening access for citizens in urban and rural areas alike. Officials claim the multi-channel grievance system will significantly streamline problem resolution for ordinary residents.

Suhasaan Tihar Feedback Under Review

The cabinet is also expected to discuss feedback and complaints gathered during the Suhasaan Tihar programme. The exercise, aimed at bringing administration closer to citizens, generated considerable public input that the government now plans to act upon.

Broader Agenda Spans Multiple Sectors

Beyond transfers and agriculture, proposals related to employees, industry, and various government departments are lined up for clearance. According to sources in the secretariat, the meeting is being viewed as a pivotal one for setting the administrative direction in the months ahead — particularly in terms of governance reforms and pro-farmer policy moves.

State government officials indicated that the decisions taken today would have direct bearing on departmental functioning and public service delivery across Chhattisgarh.

Tension erupts in Bharanda over reported religious conversion drive

A tense situation unfolded in Bharanda village of Narayanpur district in Chhattisgarh on Monday night after villagers clashed with a group allegedly involved in religious conversion activities. Local residents accused a pastor and two-three others, who arrived in a vehicle marked ‘PRESS’, of trying to persuade tribal community members to adopt Christianity. The confrontation quickly escalated into a physical scuffle, leaving two to three people, including a woman, injured.

Police reached the spot promptly and brought the situation under control. Additional forces have been deployed in the village and surrounding areas to prevent any further flare-up. The injured were shifted to a hospital for treatment, where they are reported to be stable. The pastor and his companions were taken to the Bharanda police station for questioning.

Villagers protest alleged conversion bid

According to initial reports, the group arrived in the village on Monday evening. Locals claimed they were conducting religious activities inside a house when the news spread. A large number of villagers gathered and voiced strong opposition. What began as an argument soon turned into a heated exchange and then physical assault between the two groups.

Residents expressed particular anger over the use of a vehicle bearing ‘PRESS’ markings, saying it was an attempt to misuse the credibility associated with journalists. Many raised slogans demanding strict action against those involved. Some even staged a brief sit-in on the road, refusing to disperse until authorities assured them of proper investigation.

Police deploy forces, launch probe

Senior police and administrative officials rushed to the village following the incident. The district administration has strengthened security arrangements to maintain peace. Officers from both sides have been engaged in talks to calm tempers and restore normalcy.

“Investigations are underway,” a police official said. “We are questioning all concerned parties and will take appropriate action based on the findings. At this stage, we are not confirming any specific motive.” No formal FIR details have been made public yet, though locals have demanded stringent measures under relevant laws against forced or induced conversions.

Background of religious tensions in region

Narayanpur, located in the Bastar division, has witnessed sporadic instances of friction over religious conversions in the past. The tribal-dominated area often sees such disputes when outsiders are perceived to be interfering with traditional customs and beliefs. Similar tensions were reported just a day earlier in neighbouring Kanker district, where villagers protested against a prayer meeting, alleging inducement for conversion.

These incidents highlight the sensitive nature of religious identity in the resource-rich but underdeveloped tribal belts of Chhattisgarh. Many local communities remain protective of their indigenous faith practices and view organised conversion drives with suspicion, especially when they involve external groups.

Impact on village life and public sentiment

The clash has left the village on edge. Markets and daily activities were affected as residents remained cautious. Women and children were particularly concerned after the injury to a local woman. Families of the injured have appealed for justice and compensation.

Villagers also raised concerns about the larger issue of demographic changes through conversions. “We will not tolerate anyone coming from outside and changing our traditions by luring people,” said one resident during the protest. While such statements reflect strong local sentiment, authorities have urged everyone to maintain restraint and allow the law to take its course.

What lies ahead

As of now, the situation is described as tense but under control. Police have intensified patrolling and are monitoring the village closely. The outcome of the ongoing investigation will determine further legal steps, including possible charges related to rioting, hurt, and promotion of enmity on religious grounds.

The incident has once again brought into focus the need for greater dialogue and vigilance in tribal areas to prevent such confrontations. District officials are expected to hold meetings with community leaders in the coming days to address underlying grievances and ensure communal harmony.
