AV Subramanian Quits Congress Ahead of Puducherry Polls
Digital Desk
Veteran Congress leader AV Subramanian resigns from all party posts after being denied a ticket ahead of Puducherry assembly elections on April 9, 2026
A Resignation That Stings
The timing could not have been worse for the Congress. Just hours after the party released its list of 16 candidates for the upcoming Puducherry Legislative Assembly elections, former Congress leader AV Subramanian resigned from all Congress party positions, citing "private reasons and unavoidable circumstances" in a letter addressed to Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee president V Vaithilingam.
The move sent a clear political signal — Subramanian, one of the most recognisable faces of Congress in Puducherry, was unhappy with being left out of the party's candidate list.
Ticket Denial Triggers Exit
The immediate trigger was straightforward. Subramanian was denied a ticket to contest the April assembly polls, with the party instead choosing to field AM Ranjith in the Karaikal North constituency. Business Today
Subramanian, who hails from Karaikal, had contested from Karaikal North in the 2021 polls but lost. He previously won the 2001 election from the same seat and has served as Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and a minister in the Congress government. Swarajya
For a leader of his stature and experience, being sidelined in favour of a lesser-known candidate was not easy to absorb quietly.
A Veteran Walks Out
Subramanian's political career spans more than two decades of active service in Puducherry's legislative and administrative institutions. His tenure as PCC president saw him navigate some of the most turbulent phases of Congress politics in the union territory, including managing defections and floor management crises.
His resignation strips Congress of a credible organisational face in the Karaikal belt — a region where the party has historically invested heavily.
Candidate List Triggers Discontent
Puducherry Congress president V Vaithilingam released the party's list of 16 candidates earlier in the day. According to the list, DPR Selvam will contest from Mannadipattu, P Karthikeyan from Oosudu, N Raja Kumar from Indiranagar, PK Devadas from Kamarajnagar, M Vaidyanathan from Lawspet, G Rajendran from Muthialpet, J Vijayalakshmi from Ariyankuppam, and RKR Anandaraman from Manavely.
Vaithilingam himself is contesting from Thattanchavady. The list reflects the party leadership's attempt to balance internal factions — but Subramanian's exclusion clearly did not sit well with the veteran.
Alliance Dynamics at Play
Congress is contesting this election as part of the DMK-led alliance. The party's Puducherry election in-charge Jagadrakshagan said they would share seats among alliance partners in the 14 seats allotted to DMK. The News Mill
The Congress-DMK alliance mirrors their partnership in Tamil Nadu, where seat-sharing arrangements have become standard practice for the two parties heading into major electoral battles.
Polls on April 9
Legislative Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in Puducherry on April 9, 2026, to elect all 30 members of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly, with votes to be counted and results declared on May 4, 2026.
In the 2021 elections, the All India NR Congress-led NDA formed the government after winning 16 of 30 seats, with N Rangaswamy sworn in as Chief Minister. Business Today Congress will be hoping to claw back ground this time — but internal dissent, if left unaddressed, could prove costly.
What Comes Next
All eyes are now on whether Subramanian will formally join a rival party or choose to remain on the sidelines. His political base in Karaikal could influence the outcome in that constituency, and the Congress leadership is likely to face pressure to contain the fallout before campaigning fully kicks in.
With polling just days away, every defection carries a magnified cost.
