Commercial LPG cylinder prices saw a significant increase from Monday, with the 19kg cylinder becoming ₹42-₹53.50 costlier across major cities, while the 5kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinder saw an ₹11 hike, putting additional pressure on small businesses and restaurants that depend on cooking gas.

In Delhi, the 19kg commercial cylinder now costs ₹3,113.50, up from ₹3,071.50, according to sources familiar with the matter. Kolkata witnessed an even steeper increase of ₹53.50, taking the price to ₹3,255.50 per cylinder. However, domestic LPG cylinders used by households remain unchanged, offering some relief to families.

Domestic Gas Prices Stay Put

The price revision applies only to commercial cylinders, not the 14.2kg domestic cylinders used by households. Sources clarified that there has been no change in domestic LPG rates across cities, a move that authorities say was intentional to protect middle-class families from rising living costs during the summer months.

Restaurant owners and small business operators, however, expressed concern over the impact on their operations. "This increase will force us to either absorb the cost or pass it on to customers," said Rajesh Kumar, owner of a mid-sized restaurant in Paschim Vihar, New Delhi. "Either way, margins are getting squeezed."

FIFA World Cup 2026 to Air on Zee Network in India

In sports entertainment news, Indian football fans will soon have access to the FIFA World Cup 2026 through Zee Entertainment. The broadcaster has secured television and streaming rights for the tournament, which begins on June 11 and runs until July 19, 2026.

Matches will be telecast on United8 Sports, Zee's newly launched sports channel, while live streaming will be available on the Zee5 app. The deal, reportedly valued between USD 30-35 million, covers both television broadcasting and online streaming distribution rights for India.

The 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature 48 teams playing 104 matches—marking the first time the tournament has expanded to this format.

GST Collection Drops 20% in May After April's Record

Government tax revenues showed signs of moderation in May 2026. India's gross GST collection stood at ₹1.94 lakh crore, down 20% from April's record ₹2.42 lakh crore, according to official data released on Sunday. However, the figure remains 3.2% higher than the ₹1.88 lakh crore collected in May 2025, indicating year-on-year growth despite the month-on-month dip.

Net GST revenue for May rose 3.3% year-on-year to ₹1.67 lakh crore, compared to ₹1.62 lakh crore in the same period last year. The April surge was attributed to advance tax payments and festival-related spending, economists noted.

Maruti Suzuki Sets Monthly Sales Record

The automotive sector showed strong momentum, with Maruti Suzuki India Limited selling 2,42,688 units in May 2026—the company's highest-ever monthly sales volume. This represents a 34% increase compared to 1,80,077 units sold in May 2025.

The growth was driven by robust domestic demand and strong export performance. Hyundai, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Toyota also reported healthy growth, with sales rising up to 11% year-on-year, according to monthly sales reports released by automakers on June 1.

Gold, Silver Prices Retreat from Record Highs

Precious metals saw a correction on Monday. Gold prices fell ₹864 to ₹1,56,220 per 10 grams for 24-carat gold, while silver dropped ₹450 to ₹2,79,900 per kilogram, according to India Bullion and Jewelers Association (IBJA) data.

Analysts attributed the decline to profit-booking after gold touched record highs earlier this year. "Gold has corrected about ₹20,000 from its all-time high, making it more accessible for jewelry demand," said a Mumbai-based bullion trader.

Fuel Prices Hold Steady on June 1

Petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged across India on June 1 following a recent hike. In Delhi, petrol is now priced at ₹102.12 per litre and diesel at ₹95.20 per litre. Mumbai saw petrol at ₹111.21 and diesel at ₹97.83 per litre.

Oil marketing companies had recently increased fuel prices by ₹2.61 per litre for petrol and ₹2.71 for diesel as global crude oil crossed $100 per barrel.

Banks Closed 11 Days in June

The Reserve Bank of India's holiday calendar shows banks will remain closed for 11 days in June 2026. This includes four Sundays, the second and fourth Saturdays (June 14 and June 28), and five additional regional holidays observed across different states, including Bakrid/Eid al-Adha on June 13.

New Export Duty on Fuel Takes Effect

Additionally, new export duties on petrol, diesel, and ATF (aviation turbine fuel) came into effect from June 1, impacting India's fuel export economics. The move is expected to reduce fuel exports while ensuring adequate domestic supply during the monsoon season when demand typically rises.

Market analysts suggest that while the commercial LPG hike and fuel export duties may increase short-term costs for businesses, the overall economic picture remains resilient with GST collections showing year-on-year growth and auto sales hitting record levels.

Looking ahead, attention will turn to the RBI's monetary policy review next week, where interest rate decisions could further impact business borrowing costs and consumer spending patterns.

Commercial LPG cylinder prices were hiked by up to ₹53.50 on Saturday as state-owned oil marketing companies revised rates for the month of June. The increase, effective from June 1, excludes domestic cooking gas cylinders which remain at previous levels.

In the national capital, a 19-kg commercial cylinder now costs ₹3,113.50 – a rise of ₹42 from ₹3,071.50. Kolkata saw the steepest jump of ₹53.50, pushing the price to ₹3,255.50. Mumbai and Chennai recorded increases of ₹43.50 and ₹46 respectively, with new prices at ₹3,067.50 and ₹3,283.

Restaurants, Hotels Brace for Impact

Industry observers say the latest revision will add to operating costs for eateries, roadside dhabas, and catering businesses that rely heavily on commercial LPG. Many such establishments are expected to pass on the burden to customers, potentially pushing menu prices higher over the coming weeks.

“For a small restaurant using four to five cylinders a month, the additional outgo could be around ₹200-250,” an industry source familiar with the matter said. “In a tight-margin business, that eventually hits the consumer’s plate.”

5-kg ‘Chhotu’ Cylinder Also Costlier

The price of the 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinder, popularly known as the “Chhotu” cylinder, has been increased by ₹11 to ₹821.50 from ₹810.50. Unlike domestic cylinders, FTL cylinders do not require address proof, making them a preferred choice among migrant workers, college students in rented accommodations, and small roadside shopkeepers.

The 5-kg domestic LPG cylinder, however, continues to be priced at ₹339 – unchanged from previous months.

Domestic Cooking Gas Rates Unchanged

In a relief to households, the price of the 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder has not been altered. The unchanged status follows a series of reductions in recent months, though commercial users have not been as fortunate. Officials confirmed that the government continues to subsidise domestic LPG under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, while commercial cylinders are priced at market rates.

What is LPG and How Much Does India Need It?

Liquefied Petroleum Gas, or LPG, is primarily a mix of propane and butane, produced as a by-product during petroleum refining and natural gas processing – much like buttermilk is produced while making ghee from curd. India imports a significant portion of its LPG requirements to meet domestic and commercial demand. According to the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell, the country consumed over 28 million metric tonnes of LPG in the last financial year.

What Lies Ahead

With no immediate indication of a rollback, small businesses and street food vendors are likely to feel the pressure. The next monthly revision is due on July 1. Sources familiar with the pricing mechanism said the government continues to monitor international energy prices, which influence domestic LPG rates. For now, commercial establishments will have to absorb or pass on the latest hike.

The month of May brings a series of significant economic adjustments for Indian consumers, headlined by a steep hike in commercial LPG cylinder prices and a revamp of regulations governing the online gaming industry. While household cooking gas remains unaffected, the commercial sector faces its sharpest single-day price increase on record.

Commercial LPG Costs Surge

State-owned oil marketing companies have implemented a record-breaking hike for commercial LPG cylinders, effective Friday, May 1, 2026. In the national capital, the price of a commercial LPG cylinder has jumped by ₹993, bringing the new rate to ₹3,071.50. Similarly, the 5-kg FTL cylinders have seen their rates climb from ₹549 to ₹810.50, marking a significant inflationary shift for restaurants and small businesses.

Opposition leaders have been quick to react to the development. Rahul Gandhi criticized the move, claiming it follows a pattern of price hikes post-elections and warned that further increases in petrol and diesel rates could be on the horizon.

Jet Fuel Export Duty Shifts

In the aviation sector, the price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) for international airlines has been increased by 5%, marking the second consecutive monthly rise. According to reports from state-owned oil firms, the new rate in Delhi stands at $1,511.86 per kilolitre.

However, there is some relief for domestic refiners. The central government has reduced the Special Additional Excise Duty on diesel exports to ₹23 per litre, down significantly from the ₹55.5 per litre observed in April. Meanwhile, the export duty on ATF has been lowered to ₹33 per litre. Officials confirmed that domestic petrol and diesel prices remain unchanged for the public.

Eased Norms for Gaming

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has introduced updated rules for the online gaming sector, aiming to adopt a "light-touch" regulatory approach. IT Secretary S. Krishnan noted that the government intends to reduce the compliance burden on startups and developers. Key changes include extending the validity of gaming certificates from five years to ten years.

Under the revised framework, games not involving real-money transactions are largely exempt from registration requirements. To enhance user safety, the government has mandated a two-tier grievance redressal system, and the Ministry of Home Affairs is now authorized to block platforms that violate established safety protocols.

New Disclosure Rules for Brokers

Starting today, Sebi-registered entities—including stock brokers, mutual fund houses, and research analysts—must prominently display their registration names and numbers on their primary social media handles. This mandate requires these details to be included at the beginning of any securities market-related content. Market observers suggest this move is aimed at curbing the spread of unauthorized financial advice and improving investor protection across digital platforms.

Indore street food prices increase by ₹1–₹10 across key food hubs as rising LPG and PNG costs impact vendors and consumers alike

Price Hike Hits Stalls

A sharp rise in fuel and raw material costs has pushed up Indore street food prices, with popular breakfast and snack items becoming costlier by ₹1 to ₹10 across the city’s major food hubs. Vendors at iconic locations such as Sarafa Bazaar, 56 Dukan, and local chowpatty zones have revised rates, citing mounting operational expenses.

From poha and tea to samosas, kachoris, and even Chinese fast food, the price increase is now visible across menus. The hike has begun to affect customer footfall, particularly among middle-class families.

Food Hubs See Impact

At Indore’s well-known food destinations, traders report a noticeable dip in customer turnout following the price revision. Vendors say they have been compelled to increase prices due to rising input costs, especially fuel.

Operators at 56 Dukan and Sarafa Bazaar indicated that while the price hike appears small per item, the cumulative effect has led to reduced spending by customers.

Costs Double for Meals

Customers have reported a steep rise in overall food expenses. Meals that earlier cost ₹400–₹500 for two people are now reaching ₹700–₹800.

This increase has directly impacted dining habits. Many families who earlier ate out multiple times a week are now limiting outings to once a week or less, reflecting a shift in consumption patterns.

Items Become Costlier

Several popular items have seen noticeable price changes. A hot dog that was priced at ₹30 is now available at ₹35, while pani puri rates have jumped from ₹30 to ₹40 per plate at some outlets.

Similarly, tea prices have risen from ₹10 to ₹14 at roadside stalls. Vendors say these adjustments are necessary to maintain business viability amid rising costs.

Vendors Cite Rising Costs

Food business operators across the city point to a consistent rise in raw materials, cooking oil, and fuel as the main reasons behind the price hike.

According to restaurant operators, the cost of edible oil has surged significantly, with prices increasing by nearly ₹500–₹600 per container in recent months. Overall raw material costs have risen by 20–25%, affecting profit margins.

Some vendors also highlighted that LPG cylinder prices have shot up from around ₹1,800 to as high as ₹3,000–₹4,000 in certain cases, further straining operations.

Gas Shortage Adds Pressure

Apart from rising costs, LPG shortages have added to the challenges faced by vendors. Several operators said delays in cylinder supply have disrupted daily operations.

Due to these constraints, many businesses are operating on reduced margins. While old bookings or regular customers are being served at earlier rates in some cases, new orders are being billed at revised prices.

Why Prices Increased

Multiple factors have contributed to the increase in Indore street food prices:

Surge in LPG cylinder prices

Higher PNG billing beyond consumption limits

Rising costs of raw materials like pulses, oil, and sugar

Increase in electricity bills

Doubling of packaging material costs

These combined pressures have left vendors with limited options but to pass on part of the burden to consumers.

What Lies Ahead

Industry observers believe that unless fuel prices stabilise or supply improves, food prices may continue to remain elevated. Vendors are trying to avoid steep hikes to retain customers, but sustained cost pressure could lead to further revisions.

For now, both traders and consumers in Indore are adjusting to the new pricing reality, reflecting a broader trend seen in several urban centres as part of the ongoing India News Update on rising living costs.

₹918 to ₹4,000: How MP's Own Gas Agencies Became Its Biggest Black Market

The Iran-US war choked India's LPG supply. The government invoked the Essential Commodities Act. Refineries were ordered to run at full capacity. And then, quietly, in neighbourhoods across Madhya Pradesh, gas agency owners and their own employees started pocketing the crisis — selling cylinders meant for ordinary households at prices four times the official rate.

A domestic LPG cylinder that costs ₹918.50 in Bhopal as of March 11, 2026. The same cylinder, sourced through a gas agency's back door, is reportedly being sold across MP for anywhere between ₹2,000 and ₹4,000 depending on desperation and location. The profiteering is not being carried out by shadowy middlemen alone — it is happening inside the very agencies entrusted to distribute subsidised cylinders to the public.

Inside the Racket: How It Works

The mechanics of the scam are brazen in their simplicity. Cylinders costing ₹910 are being sold in the black market for ₹2,000, with customers forced to pay up because cylinders are simply unavailable at agencies even after waiting ten days through official channels. Windward

In MP specifically, the Bhaskar report reveals that gas agency owners and their employees — the very people responsible for distributing cylinders fairly — are diverting stock before it reaches legitimate customers and selling it at inflated rates. Gas agency staff confirmed they are getting desperate calls from buyers and that panic has gripped smaller establishments who are now going to the black market because no commercial cylinders are available through official booking channels. Zee News

The 25-day rule introduced by the government to prevent hoarding has paradoxically fuelled the black market. The policy change requiring customers to book their next cylinder only after 25 days from the previous delivery has made things worse, as dealers have kept large numbers of cylinders in stock and are selling them secretly at higher rates instead of supplying through proper booking. Wikipedia

The Numbers That Tell the Full Story

The price data from Madhya Pradesh right now is stark:

As of March 11, 2026, the official domestic LPG price in Bhopal stands at ₹918.50 for a 14.2 kg cylinder — up ₹60 from last month's ₹858.50. The commercial 19 kg cylinder now costs ₹1,889 in Bhopal, a jump of ₹144 from February's ₹1,745. NPR

Yet on the street, those official prices are a fantasy for anyone who cannot wait. Commercial cylinders are being sold for as high as ₹4,500 in some markets, and buyers are paying because there is no other choice — booking has effectively stopped for commercial cylinders in many districts. Zee News

For a mid-sized restaurant or hotel in Bhopal using 50 cylinders a month, the difference between official and black market pricing translates to an additional outlay of over ₹1 lakh per month — a figure that is forcing mass closures across the hospitality sector.

Government Strikes Back: ESMA, FIRs and Raids

The state and central governments have not been silent. The Essential Commodities Act (ESMA) — a powerful law that makes hoarding and black marketing of essential goods a criminal offence — has been formally invoked nationally. In Madhya Pradesh, district administrations have launched targeted crackdowns.

The government has confirmed that LPG production has been increased by 10%, imports from non-Strait of Hormuz routes have been raised to 70% from 55%, and all refineries are currently operating at full capacity. Windward On the enforcement side, FIRs are being registered against agency owners and employees caught diverting stock, with raids being conducted across MP's urban centres.

The punishment under ESMA is severe — imprisonment of up to seven years and heavy fines. Whether that deterrent is working on the ground is another question entirely, given how widespread the black market has become in just two weeks.

Who Is Getting Hurt the Most

The human cost of this profiteering is not abstract. It lands hardest on those who can least afford it.

The crisis is hitting households directly — a ₹60 hike in domestic cylinder prices adds 7% to monthly fuel bills, and families refilling twice monthly are paying ₹120 more. Annualised, that is ₹1,440 drained from grocery budgets per household. Al Jazeera

But for families forced into the black market — who cannot access cylinders through official channels — the real monthly bill is not ₹918. It is ₹2,000 or more. That is money taken directly out of food budgets, school fees, and medical expenses. Outside gas agencies, long queues have formed with consumers alleging that online and phone bookings are not working, and that agency staff are uncooperative — sending many desperate customers towards black market suppliers. NBC News

What You Can Do Right Now

If you are a resident of Bhopal or anywhere in MP facing black market pressure on LPG cylinders, here is what you should know:

Do not pay black market prices — report the agency or supplier immediately to your district's food and civil supplies office or on the national consumer helpline 1800-11-4000

File a complaint online at consumerhelpline.gov.in — ESMA complaints are being fast-tracked

Document everything — photograph the agency name, the seller, and any payment receipt if you are forced to buy at inflated prices

Use induction cooking as a short-term bridge while official supply stabilises

Check your booking status on the official app (Indane/HP Gas/Bharat Gas) before visiting agencies in person

The Bottom Line

The Iran-US war created India's LPG supply crisis. But the black market profiteering happening inside MP's gas agencies is a homegrown crisis — one built on greed, poor enforcement, and the exploitation of ordinary people at their most vulnerable.

Prime Minister Modi has publicly said the common man should not be impacted because of the US-Israel-Iran war. Windward That is a worthy commitment. But when a gas agency employee in Bhopal is selling your subsidised ₹918 cylinder for ₹4,000 out of the back door, the war is the least of your problems.

The government has the law, the enforcement machinery, and the public mandate to act hard and fast. The question is whether the crackdown moves faster than the profiteers.
