Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has criticised the handling of recent on-field altercations involving Indian players, calling for stronger action from cricket authorities after the Yashasvi Jaiswal-Asitha Fernando incident during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Jaiswal fined after Colombo incident

Jaiswal's confrontation with Fernando occurred during the second Test in Colombo. Following his dismissal, tensions escalated between the two players before the helmet-to-forehead contact took place.

Questions Still Remain

Olympic cricket still faces unresolved issues over player availability, workload and clashes with international or franchise calendars.

The competition will only succeed at its full potential if the best players participate. National boards, the ICC and franchise leagues will need to protect the Olympic window rather than forcing athletes to choose between contracts and national representation.

The six-team structure will also need review after LA28. A tournament that excludes too many major nations may deliver strong ratings but fall short as a genuinely global championship.

Cricket’s return is therefore both an opportunity and a test. The sport can give the Olympics younger viewers, larger Indian revenues and fresh relevance across South Asia. The Games can give cricket global legitimacy, new countries and an entirely new definition of sporting greatness.
