Monsoon Havoc Across India: 15 Dead in UP, Roads Closed in Uttarakhand and Himachal

Heavy monsoon rain claims 15 lives in Uttar Pradesh, triggers landslides in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, and strands tourists in Mizoram as IMD issues latest weather update.

Heavy monsoon rainfall continued to batter large parts of northern and northeastern India, leaving at least 15 people dead in Uttar Pradesh over the past three days while triggering landslides, road closures and flooding across several states. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast comparatively weak monsoon activity over the next five days in 10 states, including Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, as the rain-bearing system shifts towards eastern and northeastern India.

According to the latest satellite observations, dense cloud cover has moved over Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura, resulting in widespread rainfall and weather-related disruptions.

Uttar Pradesh Reports Rain-Related Deaths

Uttar Pradesh has witnessed some of the worst impacts of the current spell of monsoon rain. Officials reported that 15 people lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents during the last three days.

In Hapur, severe waterlogging submerged several underpasses, leaving vehicles stranded and disrupting traffic. In Bijnor, the Ganga River and its tributary, the Malan River, continued to flow above normal levels. A bridge collapse further disrupted movement on the Meerut-Bijnor Highway, Haridwar Road and adjoining routes.

Reports from the district also indicated that several people were caught in strong river currents as authorities continued rescue efforts.

Landslides Disrupt Connectivity

Continuous rainfall triggered multiple landslides in the Himalayan states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, severely affecting transportation.

In Uttarakhand, 118 roads remained closed due to landslides and debris. Around 100 metres of the Yamunotri National Highway was washed away, cutting off connectivity to one of the state's important pilgrimage routes.

Himachal Pradesh reported an even larger disruption, with more than 320 roads blocked following landslides caused by persistent rainfall. Authorities have deployed restoration teams, though continuous rain has slowed repair work in several districts.

Tourists Stranded in Mizoram

The northeast has also been hit hard by the shifting monsoon system. In Mizoram's Lunglei district, rising river levels forced authorities to evacuate nearly 80 families to safer locations.

Landslides were reported at 29 different locations across the state. National Highway 54 near Bualte village remains blocked, leaving several tourists stranded for the past four days. Road-clearing operations are underway, but intermittent rainfall continues to hamper restoration efforts.

IMD Tracks Eastward Shift of Monsoon

The IMD said satellite imagery indicates that monsoon clouds have largely shifted eastwards, concentrating rainfall over the Himalayan belt and northeastern states.

As a result, several central and western states, including Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, are likely to witness reduced rainfall activity over the coming five days. However, officials have advised residents in flood- and landslide-prone regions to remain alert, as isolated heavy showers are still possible.

Authorities Continue Relief Efforts

State administrations across the affected regions have intensified rescue, evacuation and restoration operations. Road clearance teams, disaster response personnel and local authorities are working to restore connectivity and provide relief to affected residents.

With rivers flowing at high levels and saturated soil increasing the risk of fresh landslides, officials have urged travellers to avoid unnecessary journeys in vulnerable areas and follow weather advisories issued by local administrations.

The ongoing monsoon season continues to pose challenges across multiple states, with authorities closely monitoring the evolving weather situation and preparing for any further rainfall-related emergencies.

Mizoram Emerges as Major Drug Trafficking Corridor as Myanmar Synthetic Drugs Flood Border Districts

Mizoram battles a worsening drug crisis as nearly 4,000kg of narcotics from Myanmar are seized in Champhai, with synthetic drugs sold via encrypted chat groups.

Nearly 4,000 kg of synthetic drugs, mostly methamphetamine sold as "Ice," have been seized in Mizoram's Champhai district over the last three years, exposing the northeastern state's growing role as a trafficking hub fed by its porous border with Myanmar.

Night Patrols Reflect Crisis Scale

In Aizawl, volunteers from the Young Mizo Association (YMA) now conduct nightly patrols, walking the city's streets armed with torches and wooden sticks to keep watch for drug peddlers targeting young people. Officials say the state is facing its worst-ever drug crisis, with the 500-kilometre unfenced border with Myanmar serving as an easy conduit for narcotics smuggling.

According to official data, drug abuse claimed 118 lives in Mizoram last year, while 21 deaths have already been recorded so far this year. Champhai, which directly borders Myanmar, has become the primary transit corridor, with traffickers exploiting the rugged terrain and ethnic ties that span both sides of the international boundary.

Drugs Sold Through Encrypted Chat Groups

Investigators say the trade has shifted almost entirely online. Suppliers operate through closed groups on WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook, and buyers reportedly only need to show a screenshot of group membership to access drugs. Peter Johmingthanga, Joint Commissioner of the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department, said dealers use coded terms such as "ice" and "candy" to evade detection on these platforms.

Home delivery of narcotics has also become common in recent months, according to local social workers. Aizawl-based social worker Elin Lalawmpuii said that between April 10 and May 28 this year, she personally recorded 239 patients in Aizawl alone who had fallen victim to synthetic drugs — a number officials describe as alarming given the short timeframe. Most of these individuals previously used alcohol or marijuana but have since moved to harder synthetic substances.

Border Villages Become Smuggling Gateways

Ground visits to Champhai revealed how small-time carriers move drug consignments across forested and mountainous terrain under cover of darkness. Myanmar's Rihkhawdar area, located directly across the border, has emerged as a key staging point, with family ties between communities on both sides reportedly being exploited to facilitate movement of consignments. From Mizoram, the drugs are then routed onward to other parts of India, as well as to Bangladesh and Gulf countries, sources said.

Community-Led 'Operation Jericho' Pushes Back

With government enforcement stretched thin, civil society has stepped in. The YMA, which has around five lakh volunteers across the state, launched "Operation Jericho" in September last year in coordination with police and the narcotics department. The initiative, rooted in the Mizo tradition of "Tlawmngaihna" or selfless community service, has deployed volunteers in 13 sensitive villages across Champhai district.

Officials associated with the operation said that whenever intelligence inputs are received, joint raids are conducted with police, with victims being identified and referred to de-addiction and rehabilitation centres rather than simply being treated as offenders.

Traffickers Shift to Manipur Route

YMA's Central President R. Lalnghetha said that as Operation Jericho began disrupting traditional smuggling channels in Champhai, traffickers adapted by rerouting consignments through Manipur. Drugs are now reportedly entering India from Myanmar via Manipur before being transported onward to Mizoram and other states, indicating that the trafficking network remains agile despite increased enforcement pressure.

Road Ahead

With seizure volumes mounting and fatality numbers rising, authorities face mounting pressure to strengthen border surveillance along the Mizoram-Myanmar frontier. Community-driven initiatives like Operation Jericho have shown early results, but officials acknowledge that sustained coordination between civil society, police and narcotics enforcement will be critical to countering the shifting trafficking routes and the growing digital footprint of the drug trade in the region.

Drone Conspiracy and Rebel Training: 7 Foreigners Arrested in India in Major NIA Crackdown

NIA arrests 7 foreigners, including 6 Ukrainians & an American, for allegedly training Myanmar rebel groups. The case highlights India's growing border security concerns.

In a case that has sent ripples through India's security establishment, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested seven foreign nationals—six from Ukraine and one from the United States—on charges of conspiring to train insurgent groups along the volatile India-Myanmar border.

The arrests, confirmed by public radio broadcaster AIR and other media reports on Tuesday, point to a sophisticated operation involving illegal border crossings, weapons training, and the smuggling of a "huge consignment of drones from Europe." The development underscores India's growing anxiety over the spillover effects of Myanmar's civil war, now entering its fifth year.

The Alleged Plot: Training Camps and European Drones

According to official sources, the accused first illegally entered India's sensitive northeastern state of Mizoram without the required permits. From there, they allegedly crossed the porous jungle border into Myanmar, where they are suspected of training "ethnic war groups... associated with insurgent groups in India."

But the plot thickens. Investigators believe the network was not just about training rebels. The seven are also accused of orchestrating the illegal transport of a significant number of drones from Europe into India, with the ultimate goal of using them in Myanmar's conflict zones. The specific type of drones and their exact European country of origin have not been officially disclosed, but the revelation raises serious questions about transnational supply chains feeding into regional insurgencies.

Legal Proceedings and National Security Charges

A closed court in New Delhi has remanded the seven accused to 11 days of NIA custody for intense interrogation. The Ukrainians were picked up from Delhi and Lucknow, while the American national was arrested in Kolkata.

The charges against them are grave. Citing official sources, The Indian Express reported that the foreigners have been charged with conspiring to commit terrorist acts against the Indian state. If convicted, the offence carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. This charge indicates that the NIA believes the alleged training of Myanmar rebels was not a standalone operation, but one with potential links to, or consequences for, insurgent activity on Indian soil.

Why This Matters: The Volatile India-Myanmar Border

This case cannot be viewed in isolation. It is the latest flashpoint in a region under immense strain.

A 1,643-Kilometre Challenge: India shares a long, largely unfenced border with Myanmar, running through remote mountains and dense forests. While a fencing project is underway, the terrain makes it notoriously difficult to police.

Fear of Spillover: New Delhi has long feared that armed groups operating in Myanmar, some of which share ethnic ties with populations in India's northeast, could drag the conflict across the border.

A History of Warnings: Last year, Mizoram's chief minister made the explosive—and hard-to-verify—claim that "thousands" of Western mercenaries had passed through the state en route to Myanmar. This week's arrests suggest those warnings may have had some basis in reality.

The Bigger Picture: India's Delicate Balancing Act

For India, the Myanmar crisis is a diplomatic and security nightmare. On one hand, it maintains a cautious line of communication with the junta in Naypyidaw. On the other, it is sympathetic to the ethnic groups, particularly the Chin, who have fled violence into Mizoram by the thousands.

The presence of Ukrainian and American nationals allegedly training anti-junta forces adds a geopolitical layer. While Ukraine is officially preoccupied with its own war with Russia, the involvement of its citizens in a faraway conflict in Southeast Asia is puzzling. The NIA's interrogation will likely focus on who exactly these individuals were working for and how the drone smuggling network was financed.

What Happens Next?

For the next 11 days, the seven accused will face detailed questioning. The NIA will be looking to map the entire network: who recruited them, who funded the drone purchases, and most critically, which specific insurgent groups they were training.

For the residents of India's northeast, the case is a stark reminder that the civil war next door is not a distant conflict. It is knocking on India's door. And as this investigation unfolds, it may reveal just how deep the foreign involvement in Myanmar's battlefields truly runs.
