In a significant crackdown, police in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district have uncovered illegal opium cultivation spread across nearly one acre of land, seizing narcotic crops estimated to be worth ₹2 crore. The Raigarh opium cultivation case came to light in the Amaghat area under Tamnar police station limits, triggering a wider investigation into suspected drug networks.

Authorities confirmed that around 60,326 opium plants, weighing approximately 2,877 kilograms, along with 3 kilograms of processed opium, were confiscated during the operation.

Accused Arrested

Police have arrested a 40-year-old man identified as Marshal Sanga, a native of Khunti district in Jharkhand. According to officials, Sanga had been residing intermittently in Raigarh for nearly a decade after marrying a local resident.

Investigators said he had taken agricultural land on lease under the pretext of cultivating watermelon and cucumber. However, instead of legitimate crops, he allegedly developed an opium plantation with the help of associates.

Search Operation Details

The police conducted raids at the accused’s residence and the farmland near Pazhar Nala, leading to the arrest. Two of his alleged accomplices—identified as Immanuel Bhengra and Ciprian Bhengra—are currently absconding, and search operations are ongoing.

Officials maintained a night-long vigil in the area as part of the investigation. Preliminary findings revealed that the illegal cultivation was spread across five different land parcels, including private and project land.

Background and Modus

According to police sources, the accused had settled in the region 8–10 years ago after his marriage. During this period, he reportedly built local contacts and gradually initiated the illegal opium farming operation.

The use of agricultural cover—claiming to grow seasonal fruits—allowed the activity to remain undetected for a considerable time. Officials indicated that such methods point to a well-planned attempt to evade scrutiny.

Legal Action Initiated

Superintendent of Police Shashi Mohan Singh stated that the कार्रवाई was part of an ongoing अभियान, “Operation Aghaat”, aimed at curbing narcotics-related activities in the district.

A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. “Strict action will be taken against all those involved. No one will be spared,” the SP said, according to officials.

Political Reactions Emerge

The Raigarh opium cultivation case has sparked a political row, with opposition leaders raising concerns over possible administrative lapses.

A delegation from the Congress party visited the site and questioned how such large-scale cultivation could go unnoticed. Senior leader T.S. Singh Deo termed the incident “deeply concerning” and called for an impartial probe.

Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel also alleged that such activities indicate a broader pattern and demanded accountability from the state government.

Pattern Across State

This is the fourth instance of illegal opium cultivation being uncovered in Chhattisgarh within the past 15 days, according to officials. Similar cases were reported earlier in Durg and Balrampur districts.

Investigators believe the repeated detections may indicate a growing network of narcotics cultivation in remote or less-monitored areas, particularly near inter-state borders.
