A 16-year-old girl in Raipur has alleged that she was sexually abused by her father for nearly three years, became pregnant twice and was forced to undergo an abortion during the first pregnancy. Police have arrested six people in connection with the case, including the girl’s father and aunt. Investigators are also looking into allegations that forged documents were prepared to show the minor as an adult and married before she was admitted to a hospital, where she later gave birth to a baby boy. The newborn was allegedly sold to another person, according to the complaint and police investigation.

The case was registered at New Rajendra Nagar police station. The girl told police that the alleged abuse began in 2023 when she was at a relative’s house in the Amlidih area. According to her complaint, her father allegedly forced her to consume alcohol, assaulted her and sexually assaulted her. She further alleged that he threatened her with serious consequences if she told anyone about the incident.

The alleged abuse continued, and the girl became pregnant. When she informed her aunt, the aunt allegedly supported the father and assaulted the girl before giving her medicines to terminate the pregnancy. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged abortion and the role of the people who were allegedly involved.

The girl later became pregnant again in 2025, according to police. This time, investigators allege that steps were taken to conceal her actual age. The accused father allegedly took her to Dr Varsha Mandal and her acquaintance Geeta Rai. Police are investigating allegations that a fake Aadhaar card was prepared to show the girl as an adult and that she was presented as a married woman before being admitted to Vasudev Hospital in Danganiya.

She subsequently gave birth to a baby boy at the hospital. Police are now examining what happened after the delivery, including the allegation that the newborn was handed over or sold to another person. Investigators are checking hospital records, documents and the identities of people allegedly connected with the admission and subsequent handling of the child.

The case involves several serious allegations, and police have registered offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Juvenile Justice Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Officers are also examining the alleged preparation of false documents and the circumstances surrounding the child’s birth and disappearance from the hospital-related process.

Following the complaint, a police team acted under the direction of senior officers and arrested six accused persons. Those arrested include the girl’s father and aunt, along with Rohit Rai, Saheb Mandal, Yogita Rai alias Geeta and Barkha Verma alias Varsha Mandal, according to police. Investigators are continuing to question the accused and verify the sequence of events described by the survivor.

The allegations are extremely serious, but the charges against the accused will be tested through the legal process. Police are also investigating the newborn-related allegation separately as part of the wider case. Further details are expected as investigators examine documents, hospital records and other evidence.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday indicated that it may order an independent investigation into allegations of police excesses during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest over the alleged NEET paper leak, observing that democratic protests are legitimate but any unlawful acts by either protesters or authorities must be held accountable.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohan, was hearing a batch of petitions alleging excessive use of force by police during the July 20 demonstration in the national capital.

CJI Questions Need for Independent Investigation

During the hearing, the Chief Justice noted that the allegations placed before the court disclosed a prima facie case warranting further examination.

Questioning whether an impartial inquiry was required, the Bench remarked, "Why should there not be an independent probe into these allegations?"

The petitions allege that protesters, including students, women, advocates and media personnel, were subjected to excessive police force during the march, resulting in serious injuries.

Court Stresses Accountability for All Sides

The Bench observed that protests are an essential part of a democratic society and cannot, by themselves, justify the use of excessive force.

At the same time, the court emphasised that anyone who violated the law during the demonstrations—including protesters or officials—must face legal consequences.

The judges noted that once an appropriate legal framework is established, every individual responsible for violence or excesses should be held accountable.

High-Powered Committee Under Consideration

The Supreme Court indicated that it is considering the constitution of a high-powered committee to investigate incidents of violence not only in Delhi but also in other states where similar allegations have emerged.

The proposed panel may also examine broader issues relating to crowd management and policing during public demonstrations.

Uniform Protest Protocol Suggested

During the proceedings, the Bench highlighted the need for a nationwide protocol governing public protests and police crowd-control measures.

The court observed that demonstrations across the country have evolved significantly in recent years and existing procedures may require revision to balance public order with constitutional rights.

At the same time, the Bench acknowledged that law enforcement agencies often face difficult situations where peaceful protests may be infiltrated by violent elements, complicating crowd-control operations.

The judges said all stakeholders, including governments, police authorities and petitioners, should assist the court in developing a balanced framework.

Families of Injured Police Personnel Move Supreme Court

In a related development, the families of four Delhi Police personnel injured during the July 20 violence have also approached the Supreme Court.

The application has been filed on behalf of ACP Kailash Singh Bisht, ASI Sandeep, Constable Dheeraj and ASI Hemendar Rathi, who were injured while performing law-and-order duties during the protest.

The petition seeks directions to ensure that police personnel deployed during public demonstrations receive adequate protection of their right to life and personal liberty.

It also requests the court to frame comprehensive guidelines for safeguarding both male and female police personnel while handling protests and to ensure accountability for those allegedly responsible for attacks on law enforcement officials.

Case Expands Beyond Police Action

The latest application broadens the scope of the ongoing proceedings, which initially focused on allegations of police excesses against protesters.

The Supreme Court is now examining issues relating to the rights, responsibilities and safety of both demonstrators and police personnel, while also considering broader institutional reforms for managing public protests across the country.

The matter is expected to come up for further hearing as the court considers the framework for an independent inquiry and nationwide guidelines.

Supreme Court Says Peaceful Protest Is Constitutional Right, Questions Police Action During Student Protest

The Supreme Court observed that peaceful protest is constitutionally protected and questioned police action against students protesting paper leaks, while calling for uniform national guidelines on handling demonstrations.

The Supreme Court on Monday observed that peaceful protest is a constitutionally protected right and said the police cannot resort to a lathicharge merely because people are demonstrating. The remarks came while hearing a batch of petitions alleging excessive police force against students protesting examination paper leaks during the Parliament march held on July 20.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohan said allegations of police excess should be independently examined. The court also stressed the need for uniform national guidelines governing police action during public demonstrations, observing that discipline is essential in a democracy but peaceful protests must remain protected.

The observations assume significance as the Centre prepares to push the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in Parliament, a legislation aimed at strengthening anti-paper leak laws following the nationwide NEET controversy.

Court Questions Police Response

During the hearing, the Bench underlined that agitation alone cannot justify the use of force by law enforcement agencies.

The judges noted that every allegation of excessive police action deserves impartial scrutiny and suggested that uniform operating procedures should be evolved for handling demonstrations across the country. According to the court, maintaining public order and protecting citizens' constitutional rights must go hand in hand.

Parliament March Turned Violent

The petitions relate to the July 20 Parliament march organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) over the alleged NEET paper leak.

The protest began at Jantar Mantar and later moved towards Parliament, with demonstrators marching through Parliament Street, Janpath Crossing, Kartavya Path and Vijay Chowk.

According to reports, clashes erupted after some protesters allegedly breached police barricades and attempted to move towards Parliament. Police responded with tear gas and lathicharge, while incidents of stone-pelting were also reported. More than 100 people, including police personnel and protesters, were reportedly injured during the violence.

The protest site was cleared by evening, although demonstrators returned later that night to resume their agitation.

Matter Reached Supreme Court Multiple Times

The issue has come before the Supreme Court on several occasions over the past two months.

In May, a petition sought a CBI investigation into those associated with the Cockroach Janta Party. The court declined urgent listing, observing there was no immediate emergency.

After the July 20 protest, another petition sought an inquiry into the alleged police assault on demonstrators. At that stage, the Bench declined immediate intervention, stating that it was not relying on video clips placed before it.

A fresh plea was later filed seeking restraint on police action against students participating in protests. The court agreed to hear the matter through the regular listing process.

During Monday's proceedings, the Chief Justice also clarified that reports claiming the court had earlier refused to hear petitions on the issue were inaccurate. He said no formal writ petition had been before the Bench at that stage.

Delhi High Court Also Hearing Case

Separate petitions challenging the police action are also pending before the Delhi High Court.

The High Court has already sought responses from the Union government and Delhi Police while directing authorities to preserve CCTV footage, videography and all records related to the July 20 protest.

Background

The student-led agitation over alleged examination paper leaks continued for 36 days before ending on July 25 following the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Pradhan resigned amid mounting pressure over the NEET paper leak controversy, saying recent developments had deeply saddened him.

Social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been observing a hunger strike alongside protesting students, also ended his fast after receiving assurances from the government regarding examination reforms.

The Supreme Court's observations now place fresh focus on balancing citizens' right to peaceful protest with the state's responsibility to maintain law and order, even as Parliament prepares to debate tougher legislation against examination malpractices.

CM Mohan Yadav's Convoy Diverted After Traffic Jam Near Orchha Hotel; Action Against Management Likely

A one-kilometre traffic jam caused by poor parking arrangements at a wedding venue forced the diversion of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's convoy in Orchha. Police have announced action against the hotel management.

A one-kilometre-long traffic jam caused by improperly parked vehicles during a wedding ceremony forced authorities to divert the convoy of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav during his visit to Orchha late Saturday night.

The congestion occurred near Hotel Orchha Palace, where a marriage function was underway. Officials said inadequate parking arrangements by the hotel management resulted in vehicles spilling onto the main road, blocking the route designated for the Chief Minister's convoy.

Convoy Route Changed

According to district officials, the Chief Minister's convoy was scheduled to pass through the affected stretch. However, after traffic personnel found the road heavily congested with parked vehicles, security agencies altered the convoy's route to ensure smooth and safe movement.

The disruption also caused inconvenience to local commuters using the road.

Hotel Management Under Scanner

Niwari Superintendent of Police Dr. Rai Singh Narwaria said the hotel management had failed to make adequate parking arrangements despite hosting a large wedding gathering.

He stated that the lack of proper traffic management led to road congestion and created difficulties for both the public and the administration.

"The hotel management did not ensure sufficient parking facilities for guests, resulting in traffic disruption. Appropriate action will be initiated as per the rules," the SP said.

Questions Over Event Management

Officials indicated that the incident highlighted the need for stricter compliance with traffic and parking norms during large private events, particularly in a major tourist destination such as Orchha, where roads are often narrow and witness heavy visitor movement.

Authorities are expected to examine whether the organisers violated local traffic and civic regulations before initiating further action.

Chief Minister's Scheduled Visit

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav is on a visit to Niwari district and stayed overnight at Sheesh Mahal Hotel in Orchha.

On Sunday, he is scheduled to inaugurate the newly constructed Integrated Collectorate Building in Niwari. The programme also includes the distribution of assistive devices to persons with disabilities, bicycles to schoolgirls, and benefits under various government welfare schemes. The Chief Minister will also inspect an exhibition showcasing development projects in the district.

Police officials said the seized contraband is valued at approximately ₹5.84 lakh in the illegal market.

According to police, information was received on July 21 that two individuals carrying suspicious luggage were waiting for a bus near the forest check post. Acting on the input, a police team reached the location, surrounded the suspects and detained them for questioning.

The accused were identified as Lalit Kushulia and Biranchi Gorodia, both residents of Rayagada district in neighbouring Odisha.

During a search of their bags, police recovered 10 packets containing suspected ganja. The seized material weighed 11.673 kilograms after being measured on the spot.

Investigators said the accused were allegedly transporting the consignment from Odisha and planned to deliver it in Raipur before they were intercepted.

Police have registered a case under Section 20(b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Both accused were arrested and later produced before a local court, which remanded them to judicial custody.

Officials said the seized narcotics have been sent for further legal procedures, while investigators are attempting to identify the source of the consignment and determine whether the accused were acting independently or were part of a larger interstate drug trafficking network.

The investigation is also expected to focus on the intended recipients of the consignment in Chhattisgarh and any possible links to organised narcotics supply chains operating across state borders.

Bastar has emerged as a sensitive transit corridor for narcotics smuggled from neighbouring states, particularly Odisha. Law enforcement agencies have intensified surveillance along interstate routes, forest check posts and transport corridors to curb the movement of illegal drugs.

Police officials noted that intelligence-based operations have resulted in several recent seizures, with authorities maintaining close coordination between district police units and neighbouring states to disrupt trafficking networks.

City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Sumit Kumar said strict action would continue against those involved in the illegal transportation and sale of narcotic substances. He added that police are maintaining constant vigilance over routes commonly used by smugglers and appealed to the public to report any suspicious activity related to drug trafficking.

The latest seizure is part of the ongoing crackdown on narcotics in the Bastar region, where authorities have stepped up enforcement efforts to prevent illegal substances from entering major urban centres across Chhattisgarh.

Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal sharply criticised the Centre over the police crackdown, alleging excessive use of force against protesters and demanding transparency regarding those taken into custody.

Kejriwal later visited Parliament Street Police Station in Delhi, where several protesters were reportedly being held, and sought details from senior police officials about the cases registered following the demonstration. He also said he would visit Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital to meet those injured during the police action.

AAP Announces Legal Assistance

To support those affected by the police action, the AAP chief announced a legal assistance helpline and appealed to protesters and their families to contact the party if they required legal support.

According to Kejriwal, individuals arrested in connection with the CJP protest could seek assistance through the helpline, where a dedicated legal team would provide guidance and representation if required.

Demands Transparency on Detentions

Kejriwal urged the Delhi Police to publicly release the complete list of First Information Reports (FIRs) registered in connection with the protest. He also demanded details of those allegedly detained without formal FIRs, including the locations where they were being held.

He said such information was essential so that families searching for missing relatives could know their whereabouts.

Criticises Police Action

During the press conference, Kejriwal alleged that videos circulating on social media showed excessive force being used against protesters. Referring to these videos, he claimed that peaceful demonstrators, including young participants, had been subjected to unnecessary force.

He further criticised the government's handling of the protest and accused the authorities of attempting to intimidate citizens participating in demonstrations.

Visit to Police Stations

The AAP chief stated that after meeting injured protesters at the hospital, he would also visit Parliament Street and Mandir Marg Police Stations, where, according to the party, several protesters had been detained.

A series of crime-related actions, political developments and civic issues dominated headlines across the Bhilai, Durg, Rajnandgaon and Khairagarh regions on Monday, with police making multiple arrests in theft, cybercrime and illegal liquor cases while local residents raised concerns over law and order and public safety.

In Bhilai, police arrested two men in connection with the theft of ₹74,000 from a passenger travelling in an auto-rickshaw. According to Bhilai-3 police, the victim, Arvind Kumar, was carrying cash to deposit at a bank in Charoda when he boarded an auto-rickshaw. Investigators said he was allegedly shifted between seats during the journey before being dropped short of his destination. Upon checking his pocket, he discovered the money was missing.

Police detained the auto driver and his associate on suspicion and later arrested them following questioning. Officials identified the accused as residents of the Jammul area.

In another significant operation, Bhilai police arrested nine youths accused of providing bank accounts to cyber fraud networks in exchange for commission. Investigators said the accused allegedly rented out bank accounts to cyber criminals and received payments ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹10,000.

Police recovered passbooks, ATM cards, cheque books, mobile phones, SIM cards and banking-related documents from the accused. The arrests form part of an ongoing campaign against financial fraud and cybercrime networks operating through mule accounts.

Meanwhile, Utai police arrested two men for allegedly selling liquor illegally near a village gaothan area. Authorities said country liquor bottles were seized during the raid and a case was registered under relevant excise provisions.

Away from police operations, a disturbing assault case has emerged from Chandkhuri village.

A school teacher, Narsingh Barle, alleged that he was attacked after repeatedly opposing the sale of illegal liquor and cannabis in the area. According to the complaint, he was stopped while returning home from school and assaulted after refusing to hand over money for alcohol. The teacher sustained injuries to his head and face and later filed a police complaint.

The victim claimed that illegal liquor and narcotics activities had become a persistent problem in the locality and had negatively affected the social environment. Police have registered an FIR and launched an investigation into the incident.

In a separate case in Jammul, police arrested a man accused of demanding money for alcohol, assaulting a resident and vandalising a vehicle. Investigators said the accused allegedly extorted money before later damaging the victim’s pickup vehicle.

The region also witnessed developments beyond crime and policing.

The Sports and Youth Welfare Department has invited applications for the State Sports Honours and cash awards for athletes, coaches and officials. Applications for various state-level sports recognitions and scholarships can be submitted until August 5, according to departmental officials.

In Rajnandgaon, agricultural trading activity was disrupted after labourers at the Agricultural Produce Market reportedly went on collective leave. The absence of workers affected weighing, loading and auction operations, resulting in lower activity than usual.

Market officials said the mandi typically receives between 30,000 and 35,000 sacks of paddy daily, but operations slowed considerably due to the labour shortage. Authorities are monitoring the situation and attempting to restore normal functioning.

Police in Rajnandgaon also took preventive action against six individuals accused of disturbing public order in separate incidents. The accused were produced before authorities and subsequently sent to jail under preventive provisions aimed at maintaining law and order.

On the political front, Khairagarh witnessed a small but notable shift when ten Congress workers formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party during a programme held in Gatapar Jungle village.

The induction was carried out in the presence of district and state BJP leaders, who welcomed the new entrants and highlighted the party’s organisational structure and development agenda. BJP leaders claimed that governance initiatives at both the Centre and state levels had encouraged workers from other parties to join their ranks.

The developments collectively reflect a busy day across the region, with law enforcement agencies intensifying action against crime while political activity and local governance issues continue to shape public discourse.

Police Crack Down on Fake Number Plates, Seize Luxury SUVs During Special Drive in Rewa

Traffic police launched a special enforcement campaign against vehicles with fake registration plates and illegal black window films, citing concerns over their alleged use in criminal activities.

Traffic police in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district carried out a special enforcement drive against vehicles fitted with fake registration number plates and illegal black window films, leading to action against several luxury vehicles, including Mahindra Thar and Toyota Fortuner SUVs. The operation was conducted as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen law enforcement and improve surveillance of suspicious vehicles moving through the city.

The campaign was organized on Sunday at major roads, intersections, and busy traffic corridors across Rewa. Police teams stopped and inspected a large number of vehicles, with particular attention given to premium SUVs and other high-end automobiles. During the inspection, officers reportedly found several vehicles displaying fake registration plates placed over the original number plates, while others were found using prohibited black window films in violation of motor vehicle regulations.

According to traffic police officials, the operation was launched not only to enforce traffic laws but also to address broader security concerns. Authorities stated that fake registration plates are sometimes used to conceal the identity of vehicles involved in criminal activities, making investigations more difficult for law enforcement agencies.

Police officials explained that when an original registration number is hidden beneath a counterfeit plate, identifying the actual vehicle through CCTV footage or electronic surveillance becomes significantly more challenging. Such practices can delay investigations and complicate efforts to trace suspects involved in unlawful activities.

Officials noted that concerns regarding fake registration plates have increased in recent years due to their alleged use in crimes such as the illegal transportation of narcotics, unauthorized movement of goods, and other offences. While authorities did not link Sunday's operation to any specific criminal case, they emphasized that preventive enforcement is necessary to discourage misuse of vehicles for illegal purposes.

As part of the special drive, every suspicious vehicle was subjected to detailed verification. Police teams checked registration certificates, ownership documents, registration numbers, and the authenticity of number plates. Vehicles found violating regulations were examined further before action was initiated under applicable provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The inspection covered multiple locations across Rewa city, where traffic personnel stopped luxury SUVs and other expensive vehicles for verification. During the operation, several vehicles were found with black window films exceeding the permissible legal limits, while some displayed registration plates that allegedly did not match official vehicle records or concealed the original number.

Police initiated legal proceedings against vehicles found violating traffic regulations. Challans were issued under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, and additional legal action was initiated wherever required in accordance with applicable laws.

Authorities emphasized that the use of unauthorized number plates is a serious violation because vehicle registration serves as the primary means of identification during traffic enforcement and criminal investigations. Any attempt to conceal or alter this identity can have legal consequences and may attract further investigation if criminal intent is suspected.

Traffic Police Station In-charge Akhilesh Kushwaha stated that the enforcement campaign would continue in the coming days and similar inspections would be carried out regularly across the district. He said that both fake number plates and prohibited black window films violate legal provisions and compromise public safety.

He further warned that motorists found using fake registration plates or illegal modifications would face strict legal action in addition to monetary penalties. Depending on the nature of the violation, authorities may invoke other legal provisions wherever applicable.

The officer also appealed to vehicle owners to ensure that only officially approved registration plates are installed on their vehicles and that any prohibited black window films are removed immediately. Compliance with vehicle regulations, he said, would help motorists avoid legal action during future enforcement drives.

Road safety experts have often highlighted the importance of maintaining proper vehicle identification systems. Genuine registration plates enable traffic authorities, automated surveillance systems, and law enforcement agencies to identify vehicles accurately during routine monitoring as well as criminal investigations.

Similarly, restrictions on excessively dark window films are intended to improve visibility inside vehicles during security checks and enhance passenger safety. Authorities regularly conduct enforcement drives to ensure compliance with these regulations, particularly in urban areas where surveillance plays a crucial role in crime prevention.

The latest campaign reflects the growing emphasis on preventive policing through targeted inspections of vehicles suspected of violating traffic and security regulations. Officials believe that consistent enforcement, combined with public awareness, can discourage attempts to misuse vehicles for unlawful purposes while improving overall road safety.

As the special drive continues, traffic police have urged citizens to cooperate with enforcement personnel and comply with all legal requirements relating to vehicle registration, identification, and safety standards. Authorities maintain that adherence to these regulations is essential not only for avoiding penalties but also for supporting effective law enforcement and ensuring safer roads for everyone.
