13 Petrol Pumps Run Dry in Bilaspur Amid Fuel Shortage Crisis

Long queues seen across city as petrol and diesel supplies fall short; authorities impose fuel limits and call emergency meeting with oil companies.

Bilaspur is witnessing a growing fuel crisis as nearly 13 petrol pumps across the city and surrounding areas have reportedly run dry, leaving commuters struggling for petrol and diesel. The shortage has hit both urban and rural belts, with the worst impact being seen on the Bilaspur-Korba route, where several pumps in Uslapur, Koni, Sendri, Sakri and Ghutku are either completely out of stock or supplying fuel in limited quantities. Long queues of vehicles were seen outside the few pumps that still had fuel available, while many stations displayed ‘No Stock’ boards, creating panic among residents and transport operators alike.

According to petrol pump operators, the disruption is mainly affecting HPCL outlets, while BPCL pumps are also facing shortages of petrol and diesel. Some Indian Oil pumps have also been impacted, though they are reportedly receiving supply comparatively faster. On Wednesday, several tankers failed to arrive on time, worsening the situation and forcing many fuel stations to suspend sales entirely. Pump owners stated that payments to oil companies had already been made and tankers had been dispatched from depots, but delays in transportation caused the sudden shortage.

The fuel crisis has triggered anxiety among citizens, with many vehicle owners rushing to fill their tanks fearing the situation could worsen in the coming days. Petrol pumps at Tagore Chowk, Seepat Chowk, Police Petrol Pump and Baima-Nagoi Chowk witnessed unusually heavy crowds throughout the day. Employees at several stations said customers were demanding larger quantities of fuel than normal, hoping to avoid inconvenience if more pumps shut down. This sudden surge in demand has added additional pressure on the limited stock available.

To control the situation and prevent complete depletion of supplies, several petrol pumps have started rationing fuel. In many places, bike riders are being given petrol worth only Rs 200 instead of the usual Rs 500. Car owners are receiving limited quantities, while diesel supply for heavy vehicles has also been restricted. Some pumps have reportedly imposed caps of 40 to 50 litres per customer to ensure fuel reaches a larger number of people and to prevent black marketing. However, transport operators claim this has created serious difficulties for commercial transportation and logistics services.

The crisis is being felt more intensely in rural areas, where supply delays have become more frequent. Petrol pump operators in villages and outskirts said tankers are arriving two to three days late despite advance payments being completed. Residents in these areas are now travelling long distances in search of fuel, while transporters fear the shortage could soon impact essential supply chains. Though bus and ambulance services are currently operating normally, concern is growing among commercial vehicle owners, especially those operating on industrial routes like Bilaspur-Korba.

Sources associated with the fuel business said another reason behind the sudden pressure on regular petrol pumps is the rise in commercial diesel prices. Truck and heavy vehicle operators are allegedly avoiding commercial outlets and instead purchasing diesel from regular fuel stations at comparatively cheaper rates. This has sharply increased demand at standard pumps and accelerated stock depletion. Reports have also surfaced that some fuel stations are allegedly charging higher rates from commercial vehicles, prompting authorities to introduce quota systems to regulate distribution.

Despite the growing concerns, district administration officials have maintained that the situation remains under control. Food Controller Amrit Kujur stated that payments for fuel supply had already been processed for nine petrol pumps and fresh stock was expected to reach them shortly. He added that supply for four fuel stations was still pending due to payment-related issues but oil companies were being continuously contacted to restore normal operations. Officials expressed hope that fuel availability would improve within the next one or two days.

Bilaspur Collector Sanjay Agrawal also attempted to reassure the public, saying there was no major shortage in the district and that coordination with oil companies was underway to normalize supply. To address the issue, the Collector has called an important meeting on Thursday with representatives of oil companies and the Petrol Pump Association. The meeting is expected to focus on supply management, transportation delays and measures to prevent panic buying among consumers.

Meanwhile, Petrol Pump Association president Navdeep Singh Arora acknowledged that several pumps had indeed run dry but insisted that the situation was not alarming. He said some outlets were likely to receive fresh stock either late at night or by Thursday morning. According to him, a few stations in the city, including the Ganga Fuels pump, were already shut before the current crisis, while some others like the Nehru Chowk pump had repeatedly faced shortages in recent weeks. The Devkinandan Chowk fuel station has reportedly remained closed for nearly a month.

The shortage has once again exposed the fragile nature of fuel supply chains and the dependence of transport and daily life on uninterrupted petroleum availability. With rising temperatures and increased travel demand, citizens are hoping authorities can quickly restore normal supply before the situation turns more severe. Until then, long queues, limited refueling and uncertainty are likely to continue across Bilaspur and nearby areas.

PM urges citizens to ignore rumours, trust official information

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the ongoing conflict in West Asia has triggered a global petrol and diesel crisis. Addressing the 132nd episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, he asserted that India is managing the situation effectively despite the turmoil.

The Prime Minister warned citizens against falling for unverified claims circulating on social media. “Do not believe rumours. Trust official information shared by the government,” he said, adding that some elements are trying to disturb the country’s stability.

Energy Crisis Due to War

Modi explained that the war-affected region is a critical source of global energy supplies. The prolonged conflict has disrupted production and supply chains, leading to price volatility worldwide. He credited India’s strong diplomatic ties and cooperation with other nations for helping the country navigate the challenge.

“Our progress over the past decade has given us the resilience to face such global headwinds,” the Prime Minister said.

Appeal Against Misinformation

The Prime Minister’s appeal came amid rising anxiety over fuel prices in several states. He urged the 1.4 billion citizens to stay alert and not amplify unverified messages. “Just like in past crises, the collective strength of India’s people will help us overcome this situation,” Modi said.

Government sources indicated that multiple fake advisories regarding fuel rationing have been circulating on messaging platforms. Officials confirmed that no such restrictions are under consideration.

March’s Global Turmoil

Modi noted that March 2026 has been an exceptionally difficult month for the world. After the long shadow of COVID-19, global recovery hopes have been dented by fresh conflicts. “New wars have emerged in different regions,” he said, without directly naming any country.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come as fighting between US-Israel allies and Iran continues for over a month. The conflict has already claimed hundreds of civilian lives and displaced thousands.

Assistance to Indians in Gulf

The Prime Minister expressed deep gratitude to Gulf countries for protecting Indian nationals working there. “More than one crore Indians live and work in the Gulf region. I am deeply grateful to these nations for providing every possible assistance,” Modi said.

External Affairs Ministry sources confirmed that no major evacuation has been required so far. Indian embassies remain in close touch with community leaders across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain.

Youth Power and Nation Building

During the broadcast, Modi also described India as the “world’s youngest country”. He highlighted the role of ‘Mera Yuva Bharat’ (MY Bharat) organisation in channelling youth energy for positive development. “When the nation’s youth are harnessed for nation-building, it provides immense support,” he said.

The Prime Minister praised Jammu and Kashmir’s Ranji Trophy victory, calling it a testament to the region’s sporting talent.

What Next

The government is expected to monitor global crude prices closely in the coming weeks. Officials said India continues to explore diversified energy sources and strategic reserves to cushion domestic consumers. The next episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ is scheduled for the last Sunday of April.

India Petrol Crisis Update 2026: Government Acts Fast to Protect You From Rising Fuel Prices

India petrol crisis update: Govt slashes excise duty, reserves last 60+ days & fuel prices stay stable. Here's the full truth behind the fuel crisis rumours.

Amid global tensions and viral panic on social media, the Indian government has moved swiftly and decisively to protect ordinary citizens from the impact of rising crude oil prices. While headlines about a "petrol crisis" may have caused anxiety, the reality on the ground tells a far more reassuring story — one of strong reserves, proactive policy, and a government putting its people first.

What Is Actually Happening With India's Petrol Supply?

Let's start with the most important fact: India is not running out of petrol.

The government has confirmed that India currently holds enough crude oil and refined fuel stocks to last comfortably, and there is no immediate plan to raise petrol and diesel prices. In Delhi, petrol is currently priced at ₹94.77 per litre and diesel at ₹87.67 per litre — unchanged for weeks.

Yes, global crude prices have risen sharply due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. But India's fuel ecosystem has proven remarkably resilient.

The Big Relief: Government Slashes Excise Duty

In a move that signals just how seriously the government is taking consumer protection, the Finance Ministry made a landmark announcement this week.

The Indian government slashed central excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre, offering significant relief to oil marketing companies grappling with rising global crude prices — with immediate effect.

Petrol duties were reduced from ₹13 per litre to just ₹3 per litre, and the ₹10-per-litre duty on diesel was completely removed. State-run companies, which control nearly 90% of the fuel market, have also maintained price stability for consumers. That means the companies have been absorbing rising costs rather than passing them on to you.

Fuel Shortage Rumours: The Truth Behind the Panic

Viral WhatsApp messages claiming India had only days of fuel left sent people rushing to petrol stations across the country. But authorities were quick to set the record straight.

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri personally debunked rumours of an impending lockdown, calling them "completely false" and reaffirming that India is "resilient."

Here is what actually happened: the temporary queues seen at some fuel stations were not caused by any shortage in supply. They were caused by panic buying itself — an unfortunate but manageable situation that eased quickly once supplies were replenished at the outlet level.

Why India Is Better Prepared Than You Think

India's energy security framework is robust and built for exactly these kinds of global disruptions. Here are the key reasons to feel confident:

Strategic reserves are strong. India holds over 60 days' worth of fuel reserves including crude, refined products, and strategic petroleum reserves.

Diversified sourcing. Officials are actively exploring alternative sources for crude oil, LPG, and LNG imports to reduce dependence on any single supply route.

Refining powerhouse. India is one of the world's largest oil refiners, capable of processing crude from multiple origins.

Government shield. The government has signalled it plans to continue protecting consumers unless crude prices rise extremely sharply.

What Should You Do Right Now?

The advice from authorities is simple and empowering:

Do not panic buy. Rushing to fill tanks beyond your need only creates artificial pressure on local outlets.

Check official sources. The Ministry of Petroleum and official oil company websites are your most reliable sources of fuel price information.

Ignore viral forwards. Unverified messages about lockdowns and shortages are false and harmful.

Fuel rates are revised daily at 6 AM under India's dynamic fuel pricing system, introduced in 2017 for transparency — so stay updated through verified platforms.

The Bigger Picture: India Holds Strong

Global challenges are real. The West Asia conflict has disrupted shipping routes and pushed crude prices higher worldwide. But India's response has been measured, strategic, and citizen-first. From slashing excise duties to securing alternative supply routes, the government has demonstrated that it will not let global volatility derail the lives of ordinary Indians.

The petrol crisis, as many feared it, simply does not exist. What does exist is a government working hard behind the scenes to make sure you never have to face one.
