A political storm is brewing in the Gudh Nagar Parishad in Rewa district, with a clear majority of elected councillors formally moving to oust the body’s president, Archana Singh. In a decisive move late Tuesday, 13 out of the total 15 councillors submitted a formal application to the Rewa Collector, demanding an immediate meeting to initiate no-confidence proceedings.

The development marks a significant escalation in a simmering dispute between Singh and the council members, who have accused her of running the civic body with complete disregard for established rules.

Councillors Submit Formal Demand

The group, led by a coalition of ward representatives, personally handed over the application to the collector’s office. Their primary demand is the swift scheduling of a mandatory meeting under the Municipal Act to bring the no-confidence motion to a vote. Along with the application, the councillors submitted affidavits, copies of their Aadhaar cards, and election documents to prove their legitimacy and standing.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the mood outside the collector’s office was tense but orderly. “We have followed every rule. The law is clear. If 13 of us say she has failed, the process must begin,” one of the councillors stated, requesting anonymity.

Specific Allegations of Graft and Misuse

The memorandum lists a series of serious allegations. Primary among them is the charge that Singh unilaterally passed resolutions to make “fake appointments” within the parishad, violating standard operating procedures. Councillors also alleged large-scale misuse of the council’s funds and claimed that development works were being awarded arbitrarily.

A more specific charge involves the monthly fuel bills. The application states the president regularly gets 100 litres of diesel filled for her personal vehicle—an expense they claim is not sanctioned under any rule for her position. Additionally, discrepancies in payment records for a JCB machine operating in wards 14 and 15 have been flagged. The councillors allege money was withdrawn for the machine’s operation, but proper accounts were never maintained.

Violation of MP Municipal Act

The move to oust Singh is not just about financial irregularities. The councillors have accused her of actively working to undermine the chief municipal officer’s authority. They claim she arbitrarily canceled the officer’s orders regarding the removal of encroachments, effectively siding with illegal occupiers.

This action, they argue, is a direct violation of sections 187 and 223 of the Madhya Pradesh Municipal Act, 1961. “By shielding encroachers and tearing down official orders, she has crossed a line. This is corruption of process, plain and simple,” the application reads.

Overwhelming Support for Motion

Political arithmetic in the small civic body appears heavily stacked against the president. With 13 out of 15 members backing the motion, the anti-Singh faction commands more than the two-thirds majority typically required to pass such a resolution. This number suggests the motion is almost certain to succeed if a meeting is convened.

The councillors have insisted that the collector follow the prescribed timeline and call for the session at the earliest, without any procedural delays.

President’s Response Awaited

As of this report, Archana Singh has not issued any official reaction to the no-confidence move. Efforts to reach her for comment were unsuccessful, and it remains unclear whether she will attempt a political countermove or prepare to face the vote. The collector’s office has confirmed receipt of the application and said the matter is being reviewed according to the provisions of the Municipal Act. The next few days will be crucial in determining how quickly the council meets to decide the fate of its president.

Evening Weather Turns Violent

Rewa witnessed a sudden and intense change in weather on Monday evening. Around 4:20 PM, the skies darkened over the low-lying terai areas, including Bhatwa and Lalgaon. Within minutes, heavy rain accompanied by hailstones lashed the region.

The downpour caught residents off guard. Many were seen rushing for cover as the hail blanketed roads and open fields in white. Just an hour before the event, the afternoon had been unusually hot and humid.

Farmers Assess Crop Damage

The hailstorm has raised immediate concerns for the ongoing Rabi harvest. Standing crops of wheat, chickpea (chana), and various vegetables are currently in the fields. Local farmers said the hail could cause significant yield loss, especially in villages where the storm was most severe.

“We were expecting some pre-summer rain, but not this. The ice was marble-sized in many places,” said a farmer from Bhatwa. Officials said they are waiting for detailed reports before assessing compensation.

Relief From Scorching Heat

Despite the potential crop damage, the sudden weather offered one clear relief. Temperatures dropped sharply after the hailstorm. For residents dealing with an early summer heat spike over the past week, the evening turned surprisingly pleasant.

In Rewa town, many stepped out to enjoy the cooler breeze. Children were seen collecting hailstones in parts of Lalgaon, though parents were urged to stay cautious near waterlogged roads.

Administration on Alert

Local authorities have asked patwaris and agriculture department teams to remain on alert. Farmers have been advised to document any damage and inform the nearest revenue office as soon as possible.

An official from the Rewa collector’s office said that while no casualties or major structural damage have been reported, standing crops in low-lying pockets remain vulnerable.

“We are monitoring the situation. If farmers submit their loss reports quickly, the assessment can begin within a week,” the official added.

What’s Next for Weather in Rewa?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that similar isolated thundershowers could occur in parts of northeastern Madhya Pradesh over the next 24 hours. However, widespread rain is unlikely. For now, Rewa’s residents are enjoying a brief break from the heat, even as farmers count their losses.

Over the next few days, the district administration is likely to conduct spot surveys in the worst-hit villages. Whether the government will offer immediate input subsidy for damaged crops will depend on those findings.

First phase of digital census begins in Rewa district; over 5,000 residents complete self-registration as administration aims for paperless data collection.

The first phase of the digital census campaign kicked off in Rewa district this morning, with nearly 3,700 field staff fanning out across urban and rural pockets. The exercise, being overseen by Collector Narendra Kumar Suryavanshi, marks a significant shift from traditional pen-and-paper enumeration to a fully digital, paperless process.

Officials said the drive, which runs until May 20 in this initial leg, has already seen close to 5,000 citizens complete self-registration. Each of them has been issued a 12-digit unique ID number.

Self-Registration Gains Traction

Residents who have registered themselves won’t need to furnish details again when census officials visit their homes. “They just need to share this unique ID number. The system pulls up the data automatically, cutting down duplication and manual errors,” said Deputy Collector R.K. Sinha, who is monitoring the rollout.

He added that the shift to digital platforms is expected to improve transparency and speed up data validation. “We are aiming for accuracy. This is not just about counting heads — it’s about creating a reliable database.”

Ground-Level Deployment

The administration has pressed into service 3,700 enumerators, each assigned specific zones. In Rewa’s densely populated wards like Civil Lines and Tilak Nagar, as well as farther blocks such as Naigarhi and Teonthar, field staff have begun door-to-door data collection using tablets and pre-configured mobile applications.

Sources familiar with the ground situation said initial response in urban areas has been encouraging, though some remote villages reported connectivity challenges. Local authorities have arranged offline data capture mechanisms to ensure no household is excluded.

Timeline and Data Lock

According to district officials, the larger digital census campaign will continue until March 1, 2027. On the final date, all collected data will be locked and uploaded into the central server at midnight. No corrections or modifications will be allowed after that.

“It’s a hard deadline. Citizens and field staff both need to complete the process before the system locks,” Sinha explained. “That’s why we are emphasising self-registration early on.”

Public Response and Next Steps

In several neighbourhoods, residents queued up at designated facilitation centres to complete their self-registration on the first day itself. Retired government school teacher Prabhat Tiwari, 62, who registered at a centre in Jawahar Nagar, said, “It was simpler than expected. The ID number makes sense — now I don’t have to repeat my details again.”

The administration plans to release weekly progress reports. Over the next fortnight, special camps will be organised in village panchayats to assist those without smartphone access.

The Rewa district has set a target to cover nearly 18 lakh residents by the final deadline. Officials remain cautiously optimistic, though they admit that consistent internet availability in deep-rural pockets will be a real test.

Madhya Pradesh Govt Nominates Eldermen for 65 Nagar Parishads

Fresh order under Nagar Palika Act ensures seamless urban governance till polls or next directive

In a significant administrative step, the Madhya Pradesh government today notified the nomination of eldermen for 65 Nagar Parishads across the state. The Urban Development and Housing Department issued the order of the Madhya Pradesh Nagar Palika Adhiniyam, 1961, appointing four eldermen each to these urban local bodies. The nominations will remain in force till the existing councils complete their term or until further orders, whichever comes earlier.

The notification aims to prevent any administrative vacuum in civic bodies where regular elections are yet to be scheduled. Senior officials confirmed the move will ensure uninterrupted delivery of essential services such as water supply, sanitation, road maintenance, street lighting and solid waste management in these towns.

Nominations Span Multiple Divisions

The comprehensive list covers urban bodies in districts including Sagar, Rewa, Mauganj, Shahdol, Umaria, Katni, Dindori, Narsinghpur, Balaghat, Seoni, Chhindwara, Pandhurna, Narmadapuram, Harda, Betul, Burhanpur and Khargone. Key councils include Karoulapur, Bilhara, Surkhi and Rahatgarh in Sagar division; Vaikunthpur, Sirmour, Dabhoura, Semariya, Tyonthar and Chakghat in Rewa; Budhar in Shahdol; and several others in the Narmada and southern regions.

Legal Framework and Immediate Effect

The state government exercised its statutory powers to nominate these eldermen for smooth functioning of the councils. Every nominee’s full name, father’s or husband’s name and ward number have been explicitly mentioned in the official order, making the entire process transparent and verifiable. The nominations take immediate effect upon publication.

Ward-Wise Details of Nominated Eldermen

The order features a balanced mix of experienced local leaders, women representatives and community figures from different wards. In Nagar Parishad Karoulapur (Sagar), Shri Prabhu Singh (Ward 15, Majhgawan), Smt. Kamlesh Rani Ray (Ward 5), Shri Shripal Jain (Ward 11) and Shri Vikram Singh (Ward 8) have been nominated. In Bilhara, Shri Manish Garg (Ward 1, Singwahani), Shri Raju Patel (Ward 4, Ganesh Chowk), Shri Pushpendra Thakur (Ward 1) and Shri Hiralal Ahirwar (Ward 5) find place. Similar ward-specific appointments have been made in Surkhi, Rahatgarh, Vaikunthpur, Sirmour, Dabhoura, Semariya and dozens of other councils, ensuring broad local representation.

Ensuring Continuity of Civic Services

With local body polls not yet notified in these areas, the fresh nominations of eldermen will allow the councils to convene meetings, sanction development works and resolve public grievances without any delay. This is especially important for ongoing schemes under state and central urban missions.

Impact on Urban Governance

The decision is expected to strengthen grassroots democracy in smaller towns where elected bodies sometimes face delays in reconstitution. Residents of these 65 Nagar Parishads can now directly approach the newly nominated eldermen for civic issues. It also reflects the government’s priority to keep urban development on track while preparations for the next municipal elections are underway.

What Lies Ahead

The state is likely to announce the schedule for regular Nagar Parishad elections in the coming months. Till then, the newly nominated eldermen will work alongside any existing elected members to implement development projects and maintain public services. The complete list of names, parentage and wards has been published in the official gazette for public information and easy reference.

This proactive step by the Madhya Pradesh government underscores its commitment to robust urban local self-governance and timely public service delivery across the state.
