Indore Navkarsi Dispute Escalates, Jain Seer Urges Restraint

The Indore Navkarsi dispute, linked to Mahavir Jayanti celebrations, continues to deepen as social media exchanges intensify and community leaders call for dialogue.

Row refuses to settle

Nearly a month after a disruption during a Navkarsi programme on Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, the Indore Navkarsi dispute has shown little sign of easing. What began as a brief logistical issue during the religious event has now grown into a wider disagreement within sections of the Shwetambar Jain community.

According to those familiar with the developments, a clarification issued recently by a community federation — around 29 days after the incident — has instead added to the unease. Several members have questioned both the timing and the tone of the statement, saying it lacked balance and failed to address concerns in a conciliatory manner.

Social media flashpoints

The issue has spilled over onto social media platforms, where discussions among community members have turned increasingly sharp. Posts, counter-posts and appeals for calm have been circulating across various groups, keeping the matter alive well beyond the original incident.

Observers note that the online exchanges have, in some cases, hardened positions rather than resolving differences, with allegations and rebuttals continuing to surface.

Seer calls for calm

Amid the ongoing friction, Jain seer Acharya Muktisagar Suri stepped in with an appeal for restraint. In a message shared on a community social media group, he urged both sides to prioritise dialogue and composure.

He noted that a disagreement linked to a sacred occasion such as Mahavir Janma Kalyanak persisting for weeks was a matter of concern. Stressing the teachings of Lord Mahavir, he called for adherence to values such as forgiveness and tolerance.

‘Forgiveness over conflict’

In his message, the seer underlined that disagreements within a community are natural but should not escalate into prolonged conflict. Drawing a simple analogy, he said that just as parts of the body may clash without leading to punishment, differences within society should be resolved through understanding rather than confrontation.

His remarks have been widely shared among community members, with some viewing them as a timely intervention.

Legal notice deepens rift

The dispute has also taken a legal turn. Akshay Jain, associated with a Jain organisation, has issued a defamation notice reportedly seeking damages of ₹50 lakh against the federation over references made in its communication.

Sources indicate that the notice has further complicated efforts to de-escalate the situation, with both sides now weighing their next steps.

Questions over leadership

The controversy has also triggered a broader conversation around leadership and decision-making within community organisations. Some members have suggested that a lack of timely communication and coordination contributed to the escalation.

There has also been criticism of what a section describes as an “isolated decision-making approach”, with calls for more inclusive consultation in future events.

Factional concerns emerge

Alongside the immediate issue, discussions around internal group dynamics have resurfaced. Community observers point to factionalism and organisational rivalries as underlying factors that may have amplified the dispute.

While these claims remain part of ongoing conversations, they highlight concerns about maintaining cohesion within the community.

What triggered the issue

Initial reports suggest the controversy stemmed from vehicles, including a tractor, being parked at the Navkarsi event venue, causing disruption. An event management representative is said to have acknowledged the lapse in writing and apologised to organisers soon after.

However, the subsequent release of a letter weeks later, referencing allegations tied to the incident, has been described by some as unnecessary and poorly timed — a factor that appears to have reignited tensions.

Calls for unity

Senior members of the community have urged both sides to bring the matter to a close through dialogue. They maintain that the issue could have been resolved swiftly had there been less rigidity in positions.

Legal professionals and community voices alike have emphasised that the ongoing Indore Navkarsi dispute risks affecting broader unity and harmony if not addressed constructively.

For now, efforts to mediate continue informally, even as the situation remains fluid.

In a late-night order issued on Sunday, the Bhopal district administration revised the previously declared public holiday for Mahavir Jayanti. The holiday will now be observed on 30 March 2026 (Monday) instead of 31 March 2026 (Tuesday). The decision, effective immediately, applies to all government offices and institutions across the district.

Key Government Order

The order was issued by the Additional District Magistrate, Bhopal. It follows a directive from the Madhya Pradesh General Administration Department (GAD) dated 29 March 2026. Officials confirmed that the change was made keeping in mind local circumstances and public sentiments.

What Changes for Offices

All government offices, schools, and institutions under Bhopal district will remain closed on 30 March (Monday). Earlier, 31 March was marked as a holiday. As per the new order, 31 March will now be a regular working day. “Offices and entities will function as usual on Tuesday,” the order stated.

Reason Behind the Revision

Sources indicated that the GAD’s letter allowed district authorities to modify holiday schedules based on local needs. The Bhopal collector approved the shift after reviewing representations and ground-level convenience for citizens. No further clarification was issued on specific community requests, but the order cites “public feelings and local conditions” as the basis.

Official Statements

The order, approved by the Collector, carries the signature of the Additional District Magistrate. Copies have been sent to the Police Commissioner, Bhopal, the Treasury Officer, and all central and state government office heads in the district. The Public Relations Directorate, Bhopal, has been directed to publish the notification in newspapers and media.

Public and Administrative Impact

The revision affects thousands of government employees, bank staff, and school schedules in Bhopal. Residents who had planned travel or personal work on 31 March will now need to adjust. However, the Monday holiday gives a consecutive weekend break for many. The administration said all essential services will remain unaffected.

What Next

The district administration has asked all department heads to circulate the order immediately. No further holiday changes for April 2026 have been announced. Citizens can check the official Bhopal district website or contact their office’s establishment section for confirmation. The order is already in force as of 29 March 2026.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister honours four social workers with Mahavir Alankar at Indore event; Jain federations praised for exemplary community service

A Message for the Ages

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav on Sunday said that the teachings of Lord Mahavira — the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism — remain as relevant today as they were nearly 2,500 years ago, particularly in the context of mounting global conflict and unrest.

Addressing a large gathering at the Mahavir Jayanti Lecture and Mahavir Alankar Honour Ceremony held at Shri Madan Mohan Mehta Auditorium in Indore, Dr. Yadav said that Lord Mahavira's timeless principles of truth, non-violence, non-possessiveness, and compassion offer a path forward in today's fractured world.

"His Jayanti is not just a day to observe — it is a message to live by, year-round," the Chief Minister said.

Four Served, Four Honoured

The centrepiece of the evening was the conferral of the prestigious Mahavir Alankar on four distinguished social workers — Shri Chandanmal Chauradia, Shri Hansraj Jain, Shri Hansmukh Gandhi, and Shri Santosh Kumar Jain — recognised for embodying Mahavira's teachings through decades of community service.

Dr. Yadav, while presenting the awards, said that the honourees had not just spoken about the principles of Lord Mahavira but had lived them. "Your conduct and your achievements will inspire others to walk the same path," he said.

Federations Set a Benchmark

The Chief Minister praised the Digambar Jain Social Group Federation and the Shwetambar Jain Social Group Federation for their collaborative effort in organising the joint event, calling it a living example of organisational strength, dedication, and commitment to society.

He said that the two federations stand as vibrant models of community service, and their united front demonstrates what voluntary organisations can achieve when guided by shared values.

Ahimsa in a World at War

Dr. Yadav did not shy away from referencing current global tensions, urging world leaders and those fomenting conflict to reflect on Mahavira's foundational principle — Ahimsa Paramo Dharma (non-violence is the highest duty).

"Those who are pushing the world into chaos for narrow self-interest must remember that the answer to violence and disorder is not retaliation — it is compassion and restraint," he said, according to officials present at the event.

Science Meets Ancient Wisdom

Drawing a parallel between modern science and age-old Jain philosophy, the Chief Minister referenced the work of eminent scientist Dr. Jagadish Chandra Bose, who demonstrated nearly a century ago that plants experience life and feeling — a truth that, he noted, ordinary villagers in India have always instinctively respected.

He also spoke of Jain philosophy's detailed exposition of the human body, the five senses, and concepts such as the soul, fasting, and self-discipline — underscoring the depth and enduring relevance of Jain thought.

A Push for Green Energy

In a notable policy reference, Dr. Yadav connected the Jain principle of aparigraha (non-attachment to material excess) with his government's push for clean and sustainable energy.

"Just as our food must be satvik (pure and wholesome), so too must our energy be clean," he said, adding that the Madhya Pradesh government is making focused efforts in green energy production as part of its commitment to environmental responsibility.

A Gathering of Dignitaries

The event was inaugurated with the traditional lighting of the lamp by the Chief Minister alongside community members. It was also addressed by educationist Shri Swapnil Kothari and senior journalist Shri Rajesh Chelawat.

Among those present were Water Resources Minister Shri Tulsiram Silawat, MLAs Shri Ramesh Mendola, Shri Manoj Patel, Shri Golu Shukla, and Shri Sawan Sonkar, along with senior office-bearers of both Jain federations and a large number of community members and Jain saints.

Mahavir Jayanti this year will be formally observed on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, with celebrations across India including prayers, Rath Yatras, and charitable activities.
