Two young men have died in separate knife attacks in Raipur's DD Nagar police station area within 24 hours, with both incidents reportedly following minor disputes. Police have registered cases in both incidents and arrested five people, including two juveniles, in one of the cases. The incidents have also triggered criticism from Congress leader Kanhaiya Agrawal, who questioned the city's law-and-order situation.

The first incident took place near the Ganesh Temple on Mahadev Ghat Road. According to police, 20-year-old Kailash Nishad, a resident of Nishadpara in Raipura, was returning home on foot with a female friend when he was allegedly stopped by Tikendra Dewangan, 20, from Changorabhatha. Police said Tikendra attacked Kailash with a knife.

Kailash was injured in the assault and, according to the initial account, managed to take the knife from Tikendra and used it to attack him. Tikendra sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where he later died during treatment. Kailash was shifted to AIIMS Raipur for treatment. Police have registered a murder case and are investigating the circumstances that led to the confrontation.

Second attack ends in death

The second incident occurred at around 12:30 am on August 23 in Shriram Nagar, Changorabhatha. Twenty-year-old Bhola Vishwakarma reportedly got into an argument with some local youths.

The dispute escalated and the accused allegedly attacked Bhola with knives. He was taken to Mekahara Hospital in critical condition, but died during treatment.

Police acted swiftly in the case and arrested five accused, including two juveniles. Teams have also been deployed to locate any other suspects who may have fled after the incident.

Police investigate both cases

Cases have been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections relating to murder and rioting, according to the information provided.

Investigators are examining the circumstances behind both attacks and the individual roles of those involved. Police officials are expected to provide further details after the preliminary investigation.

Following the two incidents, police patrolling has also been intensified in the area. Authorities are assessing whether additional security measures are required at locations considered vulnerable to street violence.

Congress raises law-and-order concerns

The incidents have drawn a political response from Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Kanhaiya Agrawal. Expressing concern over the deaths, Agrawal criticised the state government's handling of law and order and claimed that criminals were no longer afraid of the police.

He called on Home Minister Vijay Sharma and the police administration to ensure that all accused in the two cases are arrested and face strict legal action.

Agrawal also alleged that illegal drug and betting activities were contributing to crime in the city and demanded immediate action against such activities.

Demand for stronger patrolling

The Congress leader called for intensified police patrolling not only in the DD Nagar area but across Raipur. He said stronger police presence was needed to prevent similar incidents and restore public confidence.

Agrawal also warned that if rising crime and alleged illegal drug and betting activities were not brought under control, the Congress would launch a protest with local residents.

The police investigation into both knife attacks is continuing, while authorities are working to establish the precise circumstances and sequence of events in each case.

Three brothers from Damoh have been acquitted by the High Court after spending nearly 17 years facing a murder conviction and life imprisonment in a 2009 case.

The case relates to the death of Pyarelal in the Madiyado area of Damoh district. The trial court had convicted Tulsiram, Mohanlal and Harprasad and sentenced them to life imprisonment in 2012.

During the appeal, the High Court found significant shortcomings in the police investigation and contradictions in the prosecution evidence. The court subsequently set aside the conviction and acquitted the accused.

For the family, however, the legal battle came at a heavy financial cost. They said they had to sell around six acres of agricultural land and their house to meet legal expenses. They also claimed that their children's education was disrupted because of the family's deteriorating financial condition.

Dispute Preceded Pyarelal's Death

According to Tulsiram Rajpal, a dispute broke out between Pyarelal and his son Ghanshyam on the night of August 25, 2009.

The family claims that during the argument, Ghanshyam attacked his father with a knife. Pyarelal later died while undergoing treatment.

Tulsiram alleged that after the incident, members of Pyarelal's family accused him and his two brothers of the murder. The brothers maintained that they were at home when the incident took place.

Despite their claim, police arrested the three brothers as accused in the case.

Family Alleges Custodial Assault

Tulsiram said he was around 16 years old when the incident occurred. He alleged that police treated him as an adult and assaulted him during questioning.

According to the family, the three brothers were kept at the police station for several days before being produced before the court and sent to jail.

On June 29, 2012, the Damoh trial court convicted the three brothers of murder and sentenced them to life imprisonment.

The family then approached the High Court challenging the conviction.

Legal Battle Continued for Years

The brothers' family members, including Babulal, Haricharan and Nandlal, who were working in Delhi at the time of the incident, returned to Damoh after learning about the case and began pursuing the legal proceedings.

Advocate Ajay Kumar Jain represented the accused during the appeal.

Harprasad was granted bail by the High Court in 2014. However, his legal battle did not end there. The family said he later died after being struck by lightning while working in the fields.

Tulsiram was also subsequently granted bail as the proceedings continued.

High Court Finds Evidence Insufficient

During the appeal, the High Court examined the investigation and evidence presented by the prosecution.

According to the family's lawyer, the proceedings revealed shortcomings in the police investigation and contradictions in the evidence. The prosecution was unable to establish the charges to the required legal standard.

The High Court therefore set aside the life sentences and acquitted the accused.

The family has now sought action against the police personnel involved in the original investigation, alleging serious lapses in the handling of the case.

Family Says Land and House Were Sold

Tulsiram said the prolonged legal proceedings severely affected the family's financial condition.

According to him, a significant portion of their six-acre agricultural holding had to be sold to finance the case. The family also sold its house in the village.

He said the family had previously depended on farming but now has to combine agricultural work with wage labour in Delhi to make ends meet.

The family's financial difficulties also affected the education of the children, according to relatives.

Mother Says Family Kept Faith

Tulsiram's mother, Lakshmibai, said she had maintained that her sons were not responsible for Pyarelal's death.

She recalled that Tulsiram and Mohan were inside the house while Harprasad was sitting in the courtyard when the incident occurred, according to her account.

Lakshmibai said the family continued to have faith in the legal system despite the case continuing for years.

Lawyer Points to Investigation Lapses

Advocate Ajay Kumar Jain said the three brothers had been accused of murdering their neighbour Pyarelal.

He said the appeal focused on weaknesses in the investigation and inconsistencies in the prosecution evidence. After examining these issues, the High Court concluded that the conviction could not be sustained.

The acquittal brings an end to a legal battle that lasted nearly 17 years, although the family says the financial and personal consequences of the case will remain long after the court proceedings have ended.

 Two separate murder cases involving young women have surfaced in Chhattisgarh's capital, with police alleging that one woman was killed by her live-in partner while another was murdered by her boyfriend over suspicions of an affair.

In the first case, a B.Ed student was allegedly assaulted and strangled by her live-in partner before being taken to a government hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The accused allegedly fled the hospital after learning of her death but has since been taken into custody.

In the second incident, police solved the mystery surrounding the body of a young woman recovered from a pond in Raipur's WRS Colony. Investigators claim her boyfriend killed her following an argument over alleged infidelity and later dumped her body in the water body to conceal the crime.

B.Ed Student Found Dead

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Bharti Netam, a resident of Kokpur village in Kanker district. She was pursuing a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) course at Vikas College in Raipur and had been living with Sawant Baghel, a D.El.Ed. student from Kondagaon, in Boriyakala under the Mujgahan police station limits for the past six to seven months.

Police said Baghel allegedly assaulted and strangled Bharti before taking her to Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital (Mekahara), where doctors declared her dead. He allegedly fled the hospital immediately afterwards.

Victim Had Planned to Return Home

Bharti's sister told police that the accused frequently suspected her character and allegedly assaulted her on multiple occasions.

According to the complaint, Bharti called her sister on the night of August 4, informing her that she had been beaten and wanted to return to her native village. Her sister transferred ₹3,000 online to help cover her travel expenses, but before she could leave Raipur, the alleged murder took place.

Family members who reached the hospital noticed multiple injury marks on Bharti's body, including injuries near her left eye, temple, chin and the back of her neck.

Based on the family's complaint, police registered a murder case and detained the accused for questioning.

Second Murder Solved

In another case, Raipur Police said they have cracked the murder of Nandani Jain, whose body was recently recovered from a pond in WRS Colony under Khamtarai police station limits.

Investigators alleged that Nandani was killed by her boyfriend Karan Tandi, who suspected she was involved with another man.

Police said the two had become friends through Instagram around three years ago, and the relationship later turned into a romantic one. Frequent disputes over alleged infidelity reportedly strained the relationship.

During a recent meeting, an argument allegedly escalated, after which Karan strangled Nandani to death. Police claim he later dumped her body into the pond in an attempt to destroy evidence before fleeing.

Technical Evidence Leads to Arrest

Following the recovery and identification of the victim, police used technical evidence and interrogation to trace the accused, who has now been taken into custody.

Investigators are continuing to question him and examine other aspects of the case.

Police said both incidents remain under investigation, and further details are expected to emerge after questioning the accused and completing forensic procedures.

A shocking murder case has come to light in Chhattisgarh's Jashpur district, where a 58-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death, and her body was hidden inside a house for several days before being buried near an under-construction Anganwadi building. Police have arrested three accused, including the victim's son, following an investigation into the crime.

The incident was reported from the Dokda police outpost area, where the victim, identified as Harawati Bai, had been living with her son, Bhushan Ram.

Affair and Land Dispute Behind Murder

According to police, Harawati Bai had a long-running land dispute with her neighbour Shyampati Bai. Investigators also found that Bhushan Ram had been in a relationship with Shyampati Bai for nearly five years.

Police said an argument over the land dispute on the night of July 24 allegedly escalated, following which Shyampati Bai and her mother, Budhmati Bai, strangled Harawati Bai to death.

Body Hidden, Later Buried

Investigators said the accused initially kept the body inside the house to conceal the crime.

The following day, Shyampati Bai allegedly informed Bhushan Ram about his mother's death and asked him not to disclose the incident to anyone. Police claimed the son remained silent and later assisted the two women in disposing of the body.

After several days, when the decomposing body began emitting a foul smell, the three allegedly shifted it during the night and buried it under sand near an under-construction Anganwadi building in an attempt to destroy evidence.

Foul Smell Led to Discovery

The crime came to light on July 30, when local residents noticed a strong foul smell coming from Harawati Bai's locked house and informed the police.

A police team, accompanied by forensic experts and a revenue official, searched the area and recovered a woman's body buried in sand near the construction site. The body was later identified as Harawati Bai.

Son's Conduct Raised Suspicion

During the investigation, police found Bhushan Ram's behaviour suspicious, as he had remained away from the house and was absent during his mother's last rites.

Interrogation reportedly revealed details of his relationship with Shyampati Bai and the alleged sequence of events following the murder. Based on his statement, investigators reconstructed the crime and gathered further evidence.

Police also recovered the spade and other materials allegedly used to bury the body.

Three Sent to Judicial Custody

Based on forensic findings, witness statements, recoveries and the accused persons' statements, police arrested Shyampati Bai, Budhmati Bai and Bhushan Ram.

All three were produced before a local court and have been remanded to judicial custody as further investigation into the case continues.

 A 30-year-old man died after allegedly being brutally assaulted with iron rods by a father and son in Chhattisgarh's Balod district, with police claiming the attack stemmed from a years-old rivalry between the two families. The victim succumbed to his injuries nearly 18 hours after the assault while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Raipur.

The incident occurred in Khaira village under the Deori police station limits. The deceased, Hitesh Sinha (30), reportedly sustained more than 20 fractures during the attack. Police have arrested the two accused—Hiraman Sinha (51) and his son Kamendra Sinha (26)—and sent them to judicial custody.

Attack Followed Alleged Deliberate Collision

According to the police, the assault took place on the evening of July 28 when Hitesh was travelling on a motorcycle with his relative Gaurav Sinha and another villager, Prakash Nishad.

The complainant alleged that as they reached a stretch near a pond in Khaira village, the accused intercepted them on another motorcycle. Kamendra allegedly rammed their bike, causing all three riders to fall onto the road.

Police said the father and son then attacked Hitesh with iron pipes, repeatedly targeting his arms and legs before continuing the assault even after he collapsed.

Victim Suffered Multiple Fractures

Investigators said Hitesh was initially rushed to Deori Hospital before being referred to a medical facility in Raipur due to the severity of his injuries.

Despite treatment, he died approximately 18 hours later. Preliminary medical findings indicated that he had suffered more than 20 fractures across his body, reflecting the intensity of the assault.

Following his death, police upgraded the case from attempt to murder to murder under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Old Rivalry Under Investigation

Police said both families had been involved in disputes since 2022, with multiple complaints and FIRs registered against each other over the past few years.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly claimed they became enraged after seeing Hitesh twirl his moustache and gesture by running his hand across his throat, which they interpreted as a threat.

The accused also alleged that the victim had earlier damaged crops by spraying herbicide in their fields, further aggravating the long-standing conflict. Police said these claims are part of the investigation and are being verified independently.

Relative Alleges Public Did Not Intervene

In his complaint, Gaurav Sinha said the accused continued beating Hitesh for nearly 20 minutes despite repeated pleas for help.

He alleged that when he attempted to intervene, he was also attacked with an iron pipe, sustaining injuries to his leg. He further claimed that bystanders present near the scene did not step in during the assault.

Police reached the spot after receiving information through the emergency response system and shifted the injured men to hospital.

Police Arrest Both Accused

Deori Police Station in-charge Manish Shende said an FIR was initially registered under provisions relating to attempt to murder. Following Hitesh's death during treatment, murder charges under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita were added.

Both accused were arrested, produced before a local court and remanded to judicial custody.

Investigators are continuing to examine the background of the dispute, previous criminal complaints involving both parties and the sequence of events that led to the fatal attack.

The incident has once again highlighted how unresolved personal rivalries in rural areas can escalate into fatal violence, with police urging residents to seek legal remedies instead of resorting to retaliation.

A 19-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend in Chhattisgarh's Surajpur district after he reportedly suspected her of being involved in another relationship. The accused allegedly lured her to Nehru Park, attacked her with a knife, and later attempted to end his own life before being arrested by police.

The deceased has been identified as Radhika Rajwade, while the accused is Ritesh Rajwade.

Called Her to Park Before Attack

According to police, the incident took place on Sunday evening when Ritesh allegedly called Radhika to Nehru Park to meet him.

During the meeting, he allegedly stabbed her in the neck with a knife. Police said the weapon pierced through her neck. After the attack, the accused allegedly pulled out the knife and fled the spot on a motorcycle.

Despite her critical injuries, Radhika reportedly managed to run a short distance before collapsing. People present in the park rushed her to the district hospital.

Victim Named Accused Before Death

Doctors referred Radhika to the Ambikapur Medical College Hospital due to the severity of her injuries.

Police said she was unable to speak because of the neck wound. During questioning, she reportedly gestured for a pen and paper and wrote down the name of the alleged attacker.

She later succumbed to her injuries during treatment at around 10:30 pm.

Suicide Note Found at Park

During the investigation, police recovered a handwritten note allegedly left by the accused at the park, in which he reportedly accepted responsibility for the attack.

Investigators believe the murder was triggered by the accused's suspicion that the victim was involved in another relationship.

Arrested Near Railway Track

After the incident, police examined CCTV footage from the area and identified the motorcycle rider.

Officials tracked the accused to a railway track, where he was allegedly preparing to die by suicide. He was taken into custody before any further incident occurred.

Investigation Underway

Police have registered a case of murder and are questioning the accused to establish the sequence of events and the motive behind the crime.

Investigators are also examining digital evidence, CCTV footage and statements of witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation.

The judgment was delivered by the Court of the Sixth Additional Sessions Judge, which held the accused guilty of murder after examining eyewitness testimony, forensic evidence and other material presented during the trial.

The case dates back to January 28, 2024, when Chakradhar Nagar police received information that a man had been found dead near the main road in Navapali village. The victim, identified as Vishal Singh Thakur, had suffered multiple fatal injuries to his head and neck caused by a sharp-edged weapon.

Police reached the spot, registered a case and began an investigation. During the preliminary inquiry, investigators inspected the crime scene, collected physical evidence and recorded statements from eyewitnesses.

According to the prosecution, Vishal Singh Thakur had been supervising land levelling and bush-clearing work on a disputed piece of land when an argument broke out with Harilal Khadia over the filling of soil on the property.

The dispute allegedly escalated, following which the accused attacked Vishal repeatedly with an axe, inflicting severe injuries to his head and neck. The victim died at the scene.

Investigating officers seized several articles from the crime scene, including the victim's motorcycle, blood-stained cap, spectacles, footwear and soil samples. These materials were later sent for forensic examination as part of the investigation.

Police arrested Harilal Khadia on January 29, 2024. During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted to committing the crime. Based on his disclosure, investigators recovered the axe believed to have been used in the attack along with blood-stained clothing.

The recovered articles were forwarded to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), whose findings were presented during the trial as supporting evidence.

During court proceedings, Additional Public Prosecutor Tanmay Banerjee represented the prosecution, while the investigation was led by Inspector Prashant Rao Aher. The prosecution examined 20 witnesses and relied on documentary, forensic and scientific evidence to establish the sequence of events.

After evaluating the evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, the court concluded that the prosecution had proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt.

The court convicted Harilal Khadia under the relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code for murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment. It also imposed a fine of ₹100.

In addition to the sentence, the court recommended that the victim's family receive ₹1 lakh as compensation under the Chhattisgarh Government's Victim Compensation Scheme, recognising the impact of the crime on the deceased's dependants.

The verdict brings the trial to a close more than two years after the fatal incident and reinforces the importance of forensic evidence and eyewitness testimony in securing convictions in serious criminal cases.

The incident took place under the City Kotwali police station limits, where the accused, identified as Lakshman Kunjam, allegedly killed his 35-year-old wife, Jhumki Kunjam, before abandoning her body behind their residence. Police have taken the accused into custody and launched a detailed investigation into the case.

According to preliminary police findings, Lakshman had long suspected his wife of having an affair, leading to frequent disputes between the couple. Investigators believe the argument escalated on July 17 when the accused was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

Police said Lakshman first made his wife consume liquor before attacking her with a kitchen knife used for cutting vegetables. He allegedly slit her throat and severed her head before dumping the body behind the house and fleeing the scene.

The body remained undiscovered for several days. As decomposition advanced, a strong stench spread through the neighbourhood, prompting residents to alert the police. Officers reached the spot and recovered the remains, which had already begun decomposing and were infested with insects.

Investigators suspect the husband immediately after the recovery because he had disappeared from the village following the incident. A search operation was launched, and he was later traced and detained by the police.

Sources associated with the investigation said the accused has admitted to killing his wife during questioning. According to police, he claimed he believed his wife was involved in an extramarital relationship, which allegedly motivated the crime. Officials, however, said his statement is being verified as part of the ongoing investigation.

Assistant Superintendent of Police R.K. Barman confirmed that the husband has been taken into custody and that the investigation is continuing. Police are collecting forensic evidence and recording statements from family members and local residents before filing the final chargesheet.

Lakshman Kunjam had previously served as the elected sarpanch of his village. His first wife had died several years ago, and he had four children from that marriage. Following her death, he married Jhumki Kunjam. Police said the children were not present at the house when the alleged murder took place.

The victim's relatives have also lodged a complaint, demanding strict action against the accused. Authorities are examining the family's statements along with other evidence recovered from the scene.

The brutal nature of the killing has shocked residents of Dantewada and renewed concerns over crimes linked to domestic disputes and suspicions within relationships. Local residents described the incident as deeply disturbing, particularly because the body remained unattended for several days before being discovered.

Police are expected to complete the investigation after forensic examination of the crime scene and the recovered weapon. Further legal action will proceed based on the evidence collected during the inquiry.

 Raipur Police have solved the murder of a woman whose blood-stained body was found near the Mahanadi riverbank cremation ground in Paragaon village under the Arang police station limits. Investigators have arrested the woman's alleged lover, who reportedly killed her after suspecting her of being involved with another man.

The accused, identified as Sonu Sardar alias Avtar Singh (37), was arrested from Raipur and has been sent to judicial custody. Police said the case was cracked within 48 hours of the recovery of the body.

Body Found Near Mahanadi Riverbank

According to police, the body of Rukmani Sonwani was discovered on July 13, 2026, near the cremation ground on the banks of the Mahanadi River. The victim had multiple injury marks on her thighs, hips, hands and legs, indicating a violent assault.

Given the nature of the crime, a special investigation team was formed immediately to identify the culprit and establish the circumstances surrounding the murder.

Long-Term Relationship Came Under Scanner

During the investigation, police found that Rukmani had been in a relationship for the past six to seven years with Sonu Sardar, originally from Punjab and currently residing in Mudhipar village under Pithora police station limits.

Investigators examined technical evidence and gathered local intelligence, which eventually led them to the accused.

Murder Triggered by Suspicion, Police Say

According to the police investigation, the incident took place on the night of July 12. Officers said the accused allegedly saw Rukmani in the company of another man around 9:30 pm.

Police claim that this led to an argument, during which the accused suspected the woman of being involved in another relationship. The confrontation reportedly escalated into violence, and he allegedly assaulted her with a sharp-edged metal bangle-like object and physical blows, resulting in her death.

It is important to note that the allegation regarding an affair is based on the accused's statement and the police investigation. It has not been independently verified in court.

Body Dumped Near Cremation Ground

After the alleged murder, the accused is said to have transported the body and abandoned it near the cremation ground along the Mahanadi riverbank before fleeing the area.

Police tracked him down using technical surveillance and information gathered from informants. Following his detention, he allegedly confessed to the crime during questioning.

Case Registered Under BNS

Police have registered a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with the offence of murder.

The accused was produced before a court on July 15, following which he was remanded to judicial custody and sent to Central Jail, Raipur.

Officials said further investigation is continuing to establish all circumstances related to the case and to strengthen the prosecution with forensic and other supporting evidence.

Crime Raises Concerns Over Violence in Relationships

The case has once again highlighted concerns over violent crimes arising from personal disputes and possessive behaviour in relationships. Law enforcement agencies continue to stress the importance of resolving conflicts through legal and peaceful means rather than resorting to violence.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday deferred the hearing on the Meghalaya government's plea challenging the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the high-profile Raja Raghuvanshi murder case. The matter will now be heard on July 21.

A bench comprising Justice Manoj Misra and Justice S. Chandrasekhar directed the Meghalaya government to produce a copy of the grounds of arrest that were served on Sonam at the time of her arrest.

The bail dispute revolves around whether the investigating agency complied with the legal requirement of furnishing the accused with the grounds of arrest. The trial court had granted bail to Sonam after observing that the mandatory arrest grounds were not properly supplied. The Meghalaya High Court later upheld that decision.

State Challenges Bail Order

The Meghalaya government has argued before the Supreme Court that Sonam was informed about the grounds of her arrest and that the controversy arose solely because of a typographical error in the arrest documents.

According to the state, the document mistakenly mentioned Section 403(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) instead of Section 103(1), which deals with murder. The government has maintained that the incorrect section number was a clerical mistake and did not prejudice the accused or invalidate the arrest procedure.

The Supreme Court is now expected to examine whether the procedural requirements under law were substantially complied with despite the drafting error.

Earlier Refusal to Stay Bail

In an earlier hearing, the apex court had declined to immediately suspend Sonam's bail, even while expressing reservations about the manner in which the High Court dealt with the issue.

A bench of Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice Sheel Nagu had observed that, at first glance, the case did not appear to be one where the grounds of arrest had been completely withheld from the accused.

However, the court chose not to grant interim relief because Sonam had already been released on bail, had spent time in judicial custody, and sought time to file her response to the Meghalaya government's petition.

Typographical Error at Centre of Dispute

During the previous proceedings, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Meghalaya government, submitted that the mention of the wrong statutory provision was merely a typographical error.

He argued that the magistrate had explained the grounds of arrest while granting transit remand and that records supporting the procedure were available. He also contended that Sonam's earlier bail applications on merits had been rejected, and relief was subsequently granted only on the technical issue of the incorrect section number.

Background of the Murder Case

The case stems from the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, a transport businessman from Indore, who married Sonam Raghuvanshi on May 11, 2025.

Soon after their wedding, the couple travelled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. They went missing on May 23, triggering a large-scale search operation.

On June 3, 2025, Raja's body was recovered from a deep gorge in Meghalaya. The investigation later uncovered an alleged conspiracy behind the murder, leading to the arrest of several accused, including Sonam, who investigators identified as the alleged principal conspirator.

She was arrested and remained in custody before securing bail on procedural grounds.

Meanwhile, Raja Raghuvanshi's family has repeatedly demanded a CBI investigation, alleging that the case involves multiple states and requires an independent probe. Sonam has denied allegations that she attempted to flee the country after her release and has maintained that she continues to cooperate with the investigation.

The Supreme Court's hearing on July 21 is expected to determine whether the bail granted on procedural grounds can withstand judicial scrutiny.

A 19-year-old nursing student was allegedly murdered inside her paying guest (PG) accommodation in Chhattisgarh's Bhilai after repeatedly rejecting the advances of a man who police say was obsessed with her. The accused, identified as 24-year-old Pintu Sahu, has been arrested from Raipur after allegedly carrying out a premeditated attack using a knife he had purchased online.

The victim, Khushi Sahu, a native of Bemetara district, was pursuing a pharmacy course while living in a rented PG in Bhilai's Ramnagar locality under the Vaishali Nagar police station limits. According to investigators, the accused had been harassing her for nearly a month by calling from multiple phone numbers after she blocked his original contact.

Alleged Obsession Turned Fatal

Police said the incident occurred on Friday, July 10, when Pintu Sahu allegedly travelled from Raipur to Bhilai after failing to contact Khushi over the phone. Investigators believe he first called the victim twice, but the calls did not go through because his number had been blocked.

He then contacted Khushi's roommate, who reportedly informed him that Khushi did not have her mobile phone with her. Soon afterwards, the accused allegedly reached the PG accommodation while the roommate was taking a bath, leaving Khushi alone in the room.

According to the preliminary investigation, an argument broke out between the two. Police allege that the accused first tried to strangle the victim before attacking her multiple times with a knife.

Multiple Knife Injuries

Investigators said Khushi sustained around ten stab wounds on her back, hands and abdomen. She suffered severe blood loss and died from her injuries.

The accused also reportedly sustained injuries to his hand during the assault before fleeing the scene and heading towards Raipur.

When the roommate returned from the bathroom, she found Khushi lying in a pool of blood and immediately alerted the landlord and a nearby café owner. Police were informed through Dial 112, and the victim was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Victim Had Reportedly Raised Concerns Earlier

Police investigation has revealed that Khushi had informed her brother about a week before the incident that an unidentified man had been repeatedly calling and harassing her from different phone numbers.

Officials also said the accused had allegedly threatened the victim's brother two days before the murder. He is further accused of intimidating the owner of a café where Khushi worked part-time, allegedly pressuring him to make her leave the job.

According to investigators, the accused wanted Khushi to marry him despite her lack of interest.

Knife Purchased Online

Police said the weapon used in the crime had been purchased online, suggesting that the attack may have been planned in advance.

Following the murder, the accused allegedly escaped to Raipur, where he was later arrested. On Saturday, police brought him back to the crime scene in Bhilai to recreate the sequence of events as part of the investigation.

Officials are questioning him to determine when the alleged murder was planned and whether there were any additional preparations before the attack.

Investigation Continues

Khushi had recently returned to Bhilai after her brother dropped her at the PG on July 9. She was simultaneously pursuing her pharmacy studies in Bhilai while also appearing for BA examinations in Bemetara.

Police are expected to present further details after completing interrogation of the accused. The investigation is continuing to establish the complete sequence of events and gather additional evidence.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over stalking, harassment and violence against women, with investigators examining whether earlier complaints and threats could have helped prevent the crime.

An Indian-origin software engineer has been arrested in the United States on charges of allegedly murdering his wife and sending a photograph of her body to his girlfriend in India. The arrest comes nearly nine months after the woman's death following an extensive investigation involving forensic evidence, digital records and witness statements.

The accused, identified as Avinash Narne, 30, originally from Telangana, has been charged with first-degree murder. A US court has ordered him to remain in custody and set his bail at USD 5 million (approximately ₹48 crore). If convicted, he could face life imprisonment under American law.

Investigators allege that Narne killed his wife, Rajitha Sabbineni, 27, just five months after their marriage. The couple had tied the knot on June 5, 2025, before relocating to the United States.

Emergency Call Triggered Investigation

According to investigators, the incident took place on October 27, 2025, when Narne contacted emergency services claiming his wife had locked herself inside the bathroom and was not responding.

Police officers forced open the bathroom door after arriving at the apartment and found Rajitha dead. Narne initially told investigators that he had stepped out of the apartment for nearly 40 minutes and discovered the bathroom locked upon returning home.

However, investigators examined electronic records from the apartment's smart lock and security system, which reportedly showed that no one had entered or exited the residence during the period Narne claimed to be away. The digital evidence led investigators to rule out the possibility of an intruder.

A postmortem examination conducted the following day concluded that Rajitha died due to asphyxia caused by strangulation, prompting authorities to officially classify the case as a homicide.

Digital Evidence Strengthened Case

During the investigation, detectives recovered mobile phone records, text messages and communication logs that allegedly contradicted Narne's statements.

Police claimed Narne had maintained a long-term relationship with a woman living in India before entering into an arranged marriage with Rajitha. Investigators further alleged that the woman attended the couple's wedding and that Narne remained in regular contact with her after the marriage.

Call records reportedly showed that Narne spoke to the woman multiple times on the day of Rajitha's death. Investigators also alleged that he admitted to sending her a photograph of his wife's body shortly after the incident.

Messages Raised Suspicion

Authorities said chats exchanged between the couple became a crucial part of the investigation.

According to police, Rajitha had repeatedly complained through text messages that beverages prepared by her husband tasted unusually bitter. On the day of her death, investigators said she messaged that a smoothie prepared by Narne tasted like medicine and cough syrup.

Police further alleged that when officers first arrived at the apartment, Narne claimed his wife had been unwell and suggested she may have collapsed after consuming cough syrup.

Investigators have included these messages among the evidence submitted in the case.

Nine-Month Probe Led to Arrest

Authorities spent several months analysing forensic evidence, digital communication, surveillance records and electronic security logs before questioning Narne again in July 2026.

Based on the evidence gathered, investigators arrested him and formally charged him with first-degree murder.

The accused remains in judicial custody after the court fixed his bail at USD 5 million. Prosecutors have indicated they will rely heavily on forensic findings and digital evidence during trial proceedings.

The case has drawn significant attention both in the United States and India due to the serious allegations and the role that digital evidence reportedly played in the investigation. The legal proceedings are expected to continue in the coming months.
