Heavy monsoon rains continued to batter several parts of India on Friday, triggering floods, landslides, waterlogging and widespread disruption across northern and western states. Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand were among the worst-affected as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued fresh alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days.

In Madhya Pradesh, the southwest monsoon has now covered the entire state within nine days. The IMD has forecast 4 to 8 inches of rainfall over the next 24 hours in Dhar, Barwani, Khargone and Dewas districts. In Ujjain, the rising water level of the Shipra (Kshipra) River submerged a temple near the famous Ram Ghat, with visuals showing water inundating the riverside shrine.

Meanwhile, Gujarat witnessed severe waterlogging after intense rainfall. Roads in Valsad district remained submerged, disrupting traffic and leaving several vehicles stranded. In Jamnagar, two children were swept away by strong floodwaters but were rescued safely by local residents before any major tragedy occurred.

In Himachal Pradesh, heavy overnight rain triggered a landslide in the Choling area of Kinnaur district. Massive debris rolled onto the national highway, burying two vehicles. State authorities said at least 49 roads have been closed following multiple rain-related incidents across the hill state, while restoration work is underway.

Heavy rain also affected Uttar Pradesh, where showers lashed Lucknow, Barabanki, Unnao, Jalaun and several neighbouring districts during the early hours of Friday. Water entered residential areas in parts of Unnao, disrupting normal life and causing inconvenience to residents.

In Rajasthan, intermittent rainfall continued for the second consecutive day. The IMD issued a red alert for Kota, Baran and Jhalawar districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas.

The situation remained challenging in Uttarakhand, where continuous rainfall triggered landslides in Rudraprayag, Chamoli and nearby districts. Falling rocks and debris blocked stretches of the Badrinath and Kedarnath highways, prompting authorities to temporarily suspend the Kedarnath Yatra as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of pilgrims.

IMD Issues Fresh Rain Alerts

According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected on July 4 over Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Odisha, Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal and Sikkim.

Strong winds with speeds of 50–60 kmph are likely over Bihar, while gusty winds are also expected in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, eastern Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. Heatwave conditions may continue in isolated areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh despite ongoing monsoon activity.

On July 5, heavy rainfall is likely over Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand and Odisha, with isolated heavy showers expected in Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal and Sikkim. The weather department has also issued an orange alert for Sikkim, Goa, Telangana and Karnataka.

Monsoon Nears Nationwide Coverage

The southwest monsoon, which reached Kerala on June 4, experienced a temporary slowdown during June due to break monsoon-like conditions. However, favourable weather systems over the Bay of Bengal have accelerated its progress.

According to the IMD, the monsoon is now expected to cover the entire country by July 5, three days ahead of its normal nationwide coverage date of July 8, bringing more widespread rainfall to the remaining parts of northwest India in the coming days.

Bilaspur Hit by Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm, Waterlogging and Power Outages Disrupt Normal Life

Heavy rain and thunderstorms lashed Bilaspur after intense heat, causing widespread waterlogging, fallen trees and prolonged power outages across the city. More rainfall has been forecast by the IMD.

After enduring intense heat and humidity throughout the day, Bilaspur experienced heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms on Monday evening, bringing much-needed relief from soaring temperatures. However, the season's first major downpour exposed the city's inadequate monsoon preparedness, leaving several roads and residential colonies waterlogged while widespread power outages disrupted normal life.

The powerful thunderstorm uprooted trees and damaged electricity infrastructure across the city, resulting in prolonged power cuts in more than half of Bilaspur. Even the VIP zone, which houses the official residences of the District Collector, Commissioner, judges and the city MLA, remained without electricity until nearly 11 p.m.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bilaspur recorded a maximum temperature of 38°C, nearly 4.9 degrees above normal. Despite Monday's rainfall, the city has received only 16.1 mm of rainfall during June, contributing to persistent heat conditions. Bilaspur also remained Chhattisgarh's hottest city on eight occasions during the past 13 days.

First Heavy Rain Exposes Civic Infrastructure

The Municipal Corporation had earlier claimed that drains and canals had been cleaned three times before the onset of the monsoon. However, the first spell of heavy rain led to severe waterlogging across major roads, intersections and residential areas. Overflowing drains and poor drainage systems caused significant inconvenience to commuters, residents and traders.

Following the incident, the Mayor directed all zonal commissioners to inspect waterlogged areas, submit detailed reports and initiate immediate corrective measures to prevent similar situations during the remainder of the monsoon season.

Strong Winds Uproot Trees, Damage Vehicles

The thunderstorm caused several trees to collapse across the city. A large tree fell near the Collector's residence, damaging a parked car. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Similar incidents were reported near IG Square and other locations where fallen trees damaged electricity lines and obstructed traffic.

Municipal Corporation teams, assisted by JCB machines, worked late into the night to clear roads, remove fallen trees and restore normal traffic movement.

Power Infrastructure Suffers Major Damage

The storm caused extensive damage to Bilaspur's electricity network. An 11 kV high-voltage power line snapped near the Collector's residence, disrupting electricity supply throughout the VIP area.

The 33 kV main transmission line connected to the Tifra and Mopka substations also suffered a breakdown. Additionally, nine insulators on an 11 kV line between Birkona and Chantidih burst simultaneously, leaving several localities across the Arpa River without electricity until late at night.

A current transformer (CT) failure at the Shanichari substation further disrupted power supply in nearby areas for nearly four hours.

Neighbourhoods including Sarkanda, Mangla, Nehru Nagar, Kududand, Aman Vihar, Gol Bazaar, Masanganj, Hemunagar, Vidyanagar, Dayalband, Vyapar Vihar, Imlibhatha, Tikrapara, Ganesh Nagar and Ayodhya Nagar remained affected by prolonged outages.

More Rain Expected Today

The India Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across Bilaspur and neighbouring districts on Tuesday due to active weather systems over the region.

Continuous rainfall across Chhattisgarh has claimed three lives in separate weather-related incidents, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast widespread rainfall across the state over the next four days. Two young sisters were killed after the wall of an old mud house collapsed in Bemetara district, while an 18-year-old youth lost his life in a lightning strike in Sukma.

According to the Meteorological Centre, the southwest monsoon is advancing steadily and is expected to cover the remaining parts of Chhattisgarh within the next two to three days. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely in several districts during this period.

The most tragic incident occurred in Raurpur village of Bemetara district, where an old mud wall collapsed following overnight rainfall. The wall fell on two sisters, Vanshika Kosle (12) and Radhika Kosle (9), who were playing in the courtyard of their house on Sunday morning. Both girls sustained severe head injuries and were rushed for medical assistance, but doctors declared them dead. A woman was also injured in the accident.

Family members said the house owner, Chandraprakash Kosle, had recently shifted to a newly constructed home. However, the old mud structure had not been demolished, and continuous rainfall weakened the wall, eventually leading to the fatal collapse.

In another weather-related tragedy, lightning struck a group of young men in Kukanar village of Sukma district. The victims had reportedly taken shelter under a tamarind tree after finishing work in the fields when a thunderstorm developed on Sunday afternoon.

The lightning strike injured five people. Eighteen-year-old Ajay Nag succumbed to his injuries while being taken to hospital, while the remaining four victims are undergoing treatment. Local authorities have appealed to residents to avoid taking shelter beneath trees or remaining in open fields during thunderstorms.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall across most parts of Chhattisgarh on Monday, with isolated areas likely to witness heavy showers accompanied by thunder and lightning. In Raipur, cloudy skies and intermittent rainfall are expected, with temperatures likely to range between 27°C and 38°C.

The monsoon has already covered more than 18 districts, including Raipur, Durg, Dhamtari, Gariaband, Mahasamund, Balodabazar, Bemetara, Kabirdham, Rajnandgaon, Kanker, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Bastar, Dantewada, Sukma and Bijapur. The remaining districts, including Bilaspur, Korba, Jashpur, Surguja, Janjgir-Champa, Raigarh and Mungeli, are expected to receive the official monsoon onset within the next 48 hours.

Despite the arrival of monsoon, rainfall across the state continues to remain significantly below normal. Rajnandgaon has recorded one of the sharpest deficits, receiving only 8.3 mm of rainfall against the seasonal normal of 100.3 mm, representing a 92 percent shortfall. Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki has reported a 95 percent rainfall deficit, while Balodabazar and Sakti have recorded deficits exceeding 80 percent.

Central Chhattisgarh remains among the worst-affected regions in terms of rainfall deficiency. Raipur has received only 25.3 mm against the normal 90.1 mm, while Durg, Dhamtari and Mahasamund have also recorded substantially below-normal precipitation.

The weather department has advised residents to remain alert during thunderstorms, avoid unsafe structures, and strictly follow lightning safety guidelines as rainfall activity intensifies across the state over the coming days.

The southwest monsoon has officially entered Chhattisgarh through Dantewada, marking the beginning of the rainy season in the state. Weather officials said the monsoon is expected to expand into more districts over the next few days, bringing increased rainfall activity across southern, central and northern regions.

Following the monsoon's arrival, several parts of the state witnessed a sudden change in weather on Monday afternoon. Raipur, Raigarh and nearby areas received heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, providing relief from the prevailing heat but also causing temporary disruptions in some localities.

In Raipur, intense showers led to waterlogging on Mahadevghat Road in the Sundarnagar area. Commuters faced difficulties as rainwater accumulated on sections of the road, slowing traffic movement and affecting daily travel.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day alert for thunderstorms, lightning and light to moderate rainfall across the state. Meteorologists said weather conditions remain favourable for further advancement of the monsoon into additional parts of Chhattisgarh, including Raigarh and adjoining districts.

With the monsoon now active over Bastar division, rainfall intensity is expected to increase significantly in the region. Weather experts believe the seasonal system will gradually move northward and cover central and northern districts in the coming days.

Despite the arrival of monsoon conditions, parts of central Chhattisgarh may continue to experience above-normal temperatures over the next two days. According to the weather department, maximum temperatures in some districts could remain 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal, creating heatwave-like conditions before widespread rainfall brings relief.

Officials have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity and avoid open spaces during lightning events. The department has warned that strong winds may accompany rainfall in several areas.

Temperature data released by the weather department showed Bilaspur as the hottest location in the state, recording a maximum temperature of 41.8 degrees Celsius. Ambikapur remained the coolest, with the minimum temperature settling at 22.9 degrees Celsius.

Raipur also experienced a sharp weather shift during the afternoon. After a hot and humid start to the day, dark clouds gathered over the city, followed by gusty winds and heavy showers in multiple areas. The city’s maximum temperature is expected to remain around 40 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to be close to 29 degrees Celsius.

The progress of the monsoon is being closely watched, particularly by farmers awaiting adequate rainfall for agricultural activities. A sustained spell of rain over the coming week could improve soil moisture levels and support the beginning of kharif sowing operations in several districts.

With favourable atmospheric conditions continuing over central India, meteorologists expect rainfall activity to remain active across Chhattisgarh throughout the week.

A tragic incident was reported from Chhatarpur district, where a 12-year-old girl died after being struck by lightning. The victim, identified as Aarti Ahirwar, was standing under a mango tree near a field along with her cousin sister in Maharajganj village of Badamalhara tehsil when lightning struck the area. While Aarti died in the incident, her cousin sustained burn injuries and was admitted to a district hospital for treatment.

The weather department has forecast strong winds of up to 60 kmph along with rain in districts including Indore, Dewas, Dhar, Sehore, Shajapur, Chhindwara, Pandhurna, Seoni, Balaghat, Mandla and Jabalpur. Similar weather conditions are expected in several tourist and religious destinations, including Bhimbetka, Sanchi, Maheshwar, Omkareshwar, Pachmarhi, Chitrakoot, Bandhavgarh and Amarkantak.

Heavy rainfall activity was recorded in several parts of the state on Sunday and Monday. Raisen received 61 mm of rainfall, equivalent to nearly 2.5 inches, while Bhopal witnessed intense showers during the afternoon. Satna recorded significant rainfall, and showers were also reported from Jabalpur, Khajuraho, Naugaon and Seoni.

The rainfall led to a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures. Among the state's major cities, Bhopal recorded a maximum temperature of 35.3 degrees Celsius, Indore 37.1 degrees, Ujjain 36 degrees and Jabalpur 38 degrees. Datia remained the hottest district with a temperature of 40.6 degrees Celsius, while Pachmarhi was the coolest at 32.2 degrees.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department said the southwest monsoon has advanced into parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar as of June 22. The system is expected to progress further over the next 48 hours.

Despite the advancement in neighbouring states, the monsoon is yet to enter Madhya Pradesh and is currently running behind schedule. Normally, the monsoon reaches the state around June 15. This year, however, it has been delayed by nearly a week. Weather experts expect the monsoon to enter Madhya Pradesh after June 25 if favourable conditions persist.

The delay has significantly affected seasonal rainfall figures. The state has recorded 48 per cent less rainfall than normal so far this month. Eastern Madhya Pradesh, including the divisions of Jabalpur, Rewa, Shahdol and Sagar, has received 69 per cent less rainfall than average. Western divisions, including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior and Narmadapuram, are also reporting a rainfall deficit.

The delayed monsoon has become a growing concern for farmers preparing for the kharif season. Sowing of crops such as soybean, urad, moong and tur has been affected due to insufficient soil moisture. Agricultural experts say at least four inches of rainfall is required before large-scale sowing can begin safely.

In some districts, farmers who sowed soybean seeds anticipating an early monsoon are now facing the risk of seed damage due to inadequate rainfall. Experts have advised growers to wait for sustained rainfall before proceeding with sowing operations.

With rain-bearing systems becoming more active and cloud cover increasing over central India, meteorologists remain optimistic that weather conditions could improve over the coming week.

Mumbai Rain Returns as Monsoon Regains Momentum

Mumbai received significant rainfall as the monsoon revived after a two-week pause. IMD expects further advance across several states around June 23.

Mumbai finally witnessed a spell of meaningful rainfall on Sunday morning as the southwest monsoon showed signs of regaining strength after remaining largely stagnant for nearly two weeks. The showers brought much-needed relief to residents who had been enduring high temperatures and persistent humidity over the past several days.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), favourable atmospheric conditions are developing for the monsoon to advance further across parts of western, central and eastern India around June 23. The monsoon had reached South Konkan earlier this month but has remained stalled near Solapur since June 8, slowing its progress into several regions that typically receive seasonal rainfall by this time.

Weather experts attribute Mumbai's latest rainfall to increased cloud formation over the Western Ghats. Moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea rise along the mountain range, cool at higher altitudes and form dense rain-bearing clouds. These cloud systems are then pushed towards Mumbai by upper-level winds, resulting in rainfall across the city and adjoining areas.

The revival of monsoon activity comes at a time when large parts of the country continue to experience intense heat. Despite scattered pre-monsoon showers in several states, temperatures crossed the 40-degree Celsius mark in at least eight states on Saturday.

Banda in Uttar Pradesh emerged as the hottest location in the country, recording a maximum temperature of 44.2 degrees Celsius. Delhi also continued to experience hot conditions, with the mercury touching 40 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists say the temporary slowdown in monsoon advancement had extended the wait for rain in several regions. While the western branch of the monsoon has remained stationary since June 8, the eastern branch has shown limited movement since June 12. This pause affected rainfall distribution across multiple states and raised concerns among farmers awaiting seasonal precipitation for sowing activities.

However, recent satellite observations and weather models indicate a gradual increase in cloud activity over central and eastern India. The IMD has noted that atmospheric conditions are becoming more favourable for monsoon progression, suggesting that the seasonal system could begin advancing once again over the coming days.

Around June 23, the monsoon is expected to move into additional parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh. Increased rainfall activity is also likely to be observed in adjoining regions as the system strengthens.

For central India, the forecast offers encouraging signs. Between June 21 and June 26, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh are expected to receive rainfall under the influence of strengthening monsoon currents and associated weather systems. Cloud cover has already started increasing over many of these areas, pointing to a more active weather phase ahead.

The expected advancement of the monsoon is particularly significant for the agriculture sector, as several regions have been awaiting adequate rainfall to begin large-scale sowing operations. A timely revival could improve soil moisture levels and support the upcoming kharif season.

With weather conditions evolving rapidly, the IMD is continuing to monitor monsoon movement across the country. Further updates are expected in the coming days as the seasonal rainfall system resumes its northward and eastward advance.

Chhattisgarh is expected to witness continued weather activity over the next five days, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting thunderstorms, lightning and light to moderate rainfall across several parts of the state.

According to the weather department, the southwest monsoon is likely to advance into additional regions of Chhattisgarh around June 23, potentially increasing rainfall activity in the coming days. The forecast comes after multiple districts recorded showers and thunderstorm activity during the last 24 hours.

While rain brought some relief to parts of the state, temperatures remained high in several areas. Raipur emerged as the hottest location in Chhattisgarh, recording a maximum temperature of 40.8 degrees Celsius. Pendra Road reported the lowest minimum temperature at 22.8 degrees Celsius.

The changing weather pattern has also led to tragic incidents.

In Sakti district, an 11-year-old schoolgirl lost her life after being struck by lightning on Friday evening. The victim, identified as Deepti Chandra, was a Class 6 student and was reportedly playing outside her house in Anda village when the incident occurred.

Preliminary information suggests that lightning struck the area suddenly during unstable weather conditions. The impact proved fatal, and the child died on the spot. The incident has left the local community and the victim’s family in shock.

The fatality highlights the risks associated with lightning strikes during the pre-monsoon and early monsoon period. Authorities and weather experts regularly advise residents to avoid open spaces and seek shelter during thunderstorms, particularly in rural areas where people often remain outdoors.

The Sakti incident is not the only weather-related tragedy reported recently. In Raigarh district, a woman died after a wall collapsed during heavy rain, while two others sustained injuries. Such incidents have raised concerns about public safety as weather conditions become increasingly unpredictable across the region.

Meteorologists say the current weather activity is being driven by favourable atmospheric conditions supporting thundercloud formation over central and northern parts of the state. As the monsoon progresses further into Chhattisgarh, more districts could experience spells of rain accompanied by gusty winds and lightning.

In Raipur, partly cloudy skies are expected through the day, with the possibility of thunderstorms and rain. The maximum temperature is likely to remain around 40 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may hover near 27 degrees Celsius.

Officials have urged residents to remain cautious during periods of thunderstorm activity. People have been advised to avoid standing under trees, near electric poles, or in open fields when lightning is reported. Farmers, outdoor workers and children have been identified as particularly vulnerable during such weather events.

With the monsoon expected to advance further into the state this week, authorities are closely monitoring weather developments. Further updates are expected as conditions evolve.

A Class 6 student was killed after being struck by lightning in Chhattisgarh's Sakti district amid widespread thunderstorm activity across the state. The incident occurred on Friday evening in Gram Anda, where the child was reportedly playing outside her house when the lightning strike took place.

The deceased has been identified as Deepti Chandra, 11. According to local reports, the lightning struck suddenly during adverse weather conditions, leading to her death on the spot. The incident has cast a shadow over the village as residents continue to cope with unstable weather across the region.

The tragedy comes at a time when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in different parts of the state over the next two days.

Weather Alert Issued

The weather department has forecast continued thunderstorm activity across several districts of Chhattisgarh. Officials have advised residents to remain cautious, especially during periods of lightning and strong winds.

Meteorologists say changing atmospheric conditions are likely to trigger scattered rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in many areas through the weekend.

Authorities have urged people to avoid open fields, isolated trees and exposed locations during thunderstorms.

Storm Activity Across State

Over the past 24 hours, weather conditions remained active across all divisions of Chhattisgarh.

Many districts witnessed thunderstorms, strong winds and intermittent rainfall. The weather activity provided some relief from heat in several places but also increased the risk of lightning-related incidents and structural damage.

In recent days, rain and storm-related incidents have been reported from different districts, highlighting the impact of the changing weather pattern.

Temperatures Remain High

Despite rainfall in many areas, temperatures continue to remain relatively high across parts of the state.

Raipur recorded the highest maximum temperature in Chhattisgarh at 37 degrees Celsius during the last 24 hours. Ambikapur reported the lowest minimum temperature at 22.7 degrees Celsius.

Weather experts say fluctuations in temperature and humidity levels are contributing to the formation of thunderclouds and localised storm activity.

Previous Rain-Related Incidents

The latest lightning fatality follows other weather-related incidents reported this week.

In Raigarh district, a woman lost her life and two others were injured after a wall collapsed during heavy rain and storm conditions. Local authorities have been monitoring vulnerable areas as rainfall activity intensifies in parts of the state.

Officials have appealed to residents to remain alert and follow safety advisories issued by district administrations and disaster management agencies.

Rain Likely in Raipur

The weather department has predicted cloudy conditions and spells of rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in Raipur on Saturday.

The state capital is expected to record a maximum temperature of around 38 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of approximately 28 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists say weather conditions are likely to remain favourable for scattered showers across central and northern districts of Chhattisgarh over the next couple of days.

Safety Advisory

Disaster management officials have reiterated that lightning poses a serious risk during the monsoon and pre-monsoon period. Residents have been advised to immediately move indoors when thunder is heard and avoid using electrical appliances during storms.

With lightning alerts remaining in force across multiple districts, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged citizens to stay updated through official weather bulletins.

The death of the young student in Sakti serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with severe weather as Chhattisgarh enters a period of heightened thunderstorm activity.

Monsoon Stalls Across India as Five Weather Systems Interfere

Monsoon progress has stalled for 11 days as five weather systems disrupt circulation, leaving several states facing rainfall deficits and heat.

The southwest monsoon has remained stuck for 11 days, leaving 19 states awaiting widespread rainfall as multiple weather systems and emerging El Niño signals slow its progress.

The southwest monsoon has lost momentum after making rapid progress across large parts of the country earlier this month, leaving several states waiting for sustained rainfall. Weather officials say a combination of five active atmospheric systems is currently affecting monsoon circulation, resulting in a significant slowdown and widening rainfall deficits across India.

The monsoon, which reached Telangana on June 8, has remained virtually stationary since then. Over the past 11 days, it has failed to advance further into several regions, raising concerns among farmers and state administrations as temperatures continue to remain high in many areas.

According to rainfall data between June 1 and June 18, India has recorded 38% below-normal precipitation. Maharashtra and Gujarat have emerged among the worst-affected states, reporting rainfall deficits of around 78% and 79%, respectively.

Moisture Flow Weakens

Meteorologists attribute the slowdown to a rare situation where multiple weather systems are operating simultaneously and interfering with the normal monsoon pattern.

Moisture-bearing winds from the Arabian Sea have weakened, while cloud bands moving northward from southern India have failed to advance as expected. These disruptions have prevented the monsoon current from strengthening over central and northern parts of the country.

As a result, widespread monsoon rainfall remains absent across several regions despite favourable calendar dates for its arrival.

Heat Persists Despite Showers

Pre-monsoon activity continues in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi and Chhattisgarh. However, these scattered showers have not been enough to bring lasting relief from the heat.

Several locations across seven states recorded temperatures above 40°C on Wednesday. Banda in Uttar Pradesh emerged as the hottest place in the country at 43.2°C.

Temperatures also crossed 42°C in parts of Odisha and Maharashtra, while districts in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh continued to experience intense daytime heat.

The combination of delayed monsoon rainfall and persistent high temperatures has increased discomfort levels, particularly in rural areas dependent on early-season agricultural activity.

El Niño Concerns Return

Adding to concerns, recent observations from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) suggest early signs of developing El Niño conditions.

According to the report, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), a critical weather belt that helps draw moisture towards the Indian subcontinent, has not shifted northward at its usual pace. The delayed movement has contributed to the sluggish advance of the monsoon.

Satellite imagery indicates active thunderstorm development over eastern India, while cloud cover remains comparatively weak across Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and large parts of western India.

Experts caution that if El Niño conditions strengthen, rainfall distribution during the season could become uneven, increasing the likelihood of prolonged dry spells in some regions.

Heavy Rain In North Bengal

While many states await monsoon rains, parts of West Bengal have witnessed the opposite situation.

Heavy rainfall in Darjeeling district led to the collapse of a bridge over the swollen Balason River, disrupting road connectivity between Siliguri and the Mirik subdivision. North Bengal districts including Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri have received intense rainfall over the past two days following the monsoon's arrival in the state on June 9.

Authorities are monitoring vulnerable areas as rain-related incidents continue to be reported.

Relief Expected Soon

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that conditions may improve over the next four to five days.

Officials say the current jet stream pattern, which has been restricting monsoon movement, is expected to weaken gradually. This could allow the monsoon to regain strength and advance into Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and adjoining regions.

Rainfall activity is also expected to increase across eastern India, the Northeast and parts of central India over the next few days.

States Remain On Alert

Several states have already issued weather advisories. Rajasthan has placed more than 30 districts under thunderstorm and rainfall alerts, while Bihar remains under an orange alert for strong winds and rain. Uttarakhand has warned Char Dham pilgrims and residents in vulnerable districts to remain cautious amid forecasts of fresh showers.

In Madhya Pradesh, where rainfall remains 39% below normal, the monsoon is now expected to arrive around June 25, nearly 10 days later than its usual schedule.

With the sowing season approaching in many regions, the progress of the monsoon over the coming week will be closely watched by farmers, policymakers and weather experts alike.

Monsoon Stalled Since June 8; India Records 37.8% Rainfall Deficit Till June 17

The southwest monsoon has remained stalled since June 8, marking the third consecutive year that India has witnessed a prolonged break in monsoon advancement during June. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the country received only 46.2 mm of rainfall against the normal 74.3 mm between June 1 and June 17, resulting in a 37.8% rainfall deficit.

Despite the current slowdown, meteorologists remain optimistic that conditions could become favorable for the monsoon to advance again within the next 4–5 days, with progress likely resuming between June 21 and June 23.

Third Consecutive Year of June Slowdown

The western branch of the monsoon has faced interruptions in recent years as well. In 2024, its advance slowed for about 8–9 days during the second week of June. In 2025, it remained nearly stationary along the Maharashtra coast for almost three weeks.

Weather experts note that such pauses do not necessarily indicate a weak monsoon season. Instead, rainfall often becomes concentrated into fewer days, resulting in more intense downpours when weather systems become active.

Why Has the Monsoon Stalled?

Meteorologists attribute the slowdown primarily to the delayed activation of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), a crucial weather system that normally shifts northward by mid-June and helps draw moisture-laden winds toward India.

Satellite observations from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also suggest that El Niño conditions are beginning to develop, which can lead to prolonged dry spells and uneven rainfall distribution across the country.

While thunderstorm activity remains active over eastern India, cloud cover has been relatively weak across Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and parts of western India, slowing the monsoon's progress.

Monsoon Progress So Far

After arriving in Kerala on June 4, the southwest monsoon advanced rapidly through 19 states within 14 days. However, it has remained stalled near Bhadrachalam in Telangana for the past week.

As a result, monsoon rains have been delayed in several regions, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and parts of central India, where farmers are eagerly awaiting widespread rainfall for sowing activities.

Pre-Monsoon Activity Continues

Even as the monsoon remains stalled, pre-monsoon showers have been reported in several states, including:

Madhya Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh

Bihar

Rajasthan

Himachal Pradesh

Chhattisgarh

Heavy rainfall affected parts of Bihar on Wednesday, while strong winds caused localized damage in Rajasthan, including uprooted trees and collapsed structures in Jaipur and Udaipur.

Heatwave Conditions Persist

The delayed monsoon has allowed heatwave conditions to continue across large parts of the country. Temperatures exceeded 40°C in several cities across:

Uttar Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh

Bihar

Jharkhand

Odisha

Telangana

Andhra Pradesh

Maharashtra

The highest temperature recorded in the country was 45°C in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Rainfall Forecast

June 19

Rain likely over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Sikkim.

Heavy rainfall expected in parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karnataka.

Thunderstorms and gusty winds likely in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

June 20

Heavy rain expected in Sikkim, North Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya.

Thunderstorms with strong winds likely in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

Rainfall activity may continue in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

When Will the Monsoon Advance Again?

According to IMD, the current pause is linked to upper-atmospheric jet stream patterns, which are influencing the movement of monsoon clouds. Once these fast-moving winds weaken, monsoon currents are expected to strengthen and advance into Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and adjoining regions.

Weather experts expect the next significant phase of monsoon advancement to begin by the third week of June, bringing relief from intense heat and improving conditions for agriculture across much of India.

Monsoon arrival expected
Chhattisgarh is likely to receive the south‑west monsoon in parts of the state within the next three to four days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday. According to officials, conditions have become favourable for the monsoon’s progress, and residents should expect a marked increase in thunderstorm, rain and strong wind activity from June 11.

Evening showers, relief from heat
On Wednesday evening several districts—including Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur—saw sudden gusty winds followed by brief spells of rain, providing temporary relief from intense heat and humidity. Local reporters in Durg said clouds built up through the afternoon and heavy showers began around late evening, bringing down dust and temperatures for a few hours.

Wind alert issued
The meteorological office has issued warnings for gusty winds of 50–60 kilometres per hour across different parts of the state on Thursday. “There may be squally winds accompanied by thunder and lightning in isolated pockets,” an IMD bulletin stated. Officials added similar conditions could persist for the next two days, raising the risk of dust storms and localized damage to weak structures and trees.

Temperature trends
The IMD expects a fall in maximum temperatures by about 2–3°C over the next two days as cloudy skies and rain set in. In the past 24 hours, parts of south Chhattisgarh recorded a slight rise in daytime heat by 1–2°C. Rajnandgaon logged the highest maximum temperature at 44°C, while Ambikapur reported the lowest minimum at 21.4°C overnight.

City outlooks

Raipur: The capital may see partly cloudy skies with chances of thunder, lightning and a dust storm or rain later in the day. Forecasts put the city’s maximum near 42°C and minimum around 29°C. Local authorities have been asked to keep emergency teams ready for quick response to uprooted trees or damaged signboards.

Durg: Residents reported sudden heavy downpours after a hot day. Street vendors and commuters said the rain provided immediate respite from oppressive humidity.

Bilaspur: After a humid day, light rain and gusts swept parts of the district, according to local observers.

Ground cues and timing
Field reporters noted cumulonimbus clouds developing over the plains by late afternoon, accompanied by rising winds that turned dust‑laden in some towns. Initial reports indicate showers lasted from the evening into the night in several pockets, but the IMD cautioned that activity will be intermittent and uneven as the monsoon makes its advance.

Public impact
The wind and rain warnings carry implications for transport, power supply and outdoor work. Farmers welcomed the prospect of the monsoon but were advised to plan sowing only after a sustained rainfall spell. Commuters were urged to exercise caution during dust storms and heavy downpours that can reduce visibility on highways, while municipal bodies were told to clear drains to avoid waterlogging in low‑lying neighbourhoods.

Why it matters
The timing of monsoon onset affects cropping schedules, water management and city services across Chhattisgarh. An early or timely monsoon can ease heat stress and replenish soil moisture, while an erratic start raises concerns for rabi crop residue management and sowing of the kharif crop.

What to expect next
Officials said meteorological updates will follow over the next 48–72 hours as the monsoon axis shifts. “We are monitoring the progress closely; a few districts should see monsoon conditions within three to four days,” an IMD official said. Local administrations have been advised to coordinate with meteorological teams and disaster response units for quick action if squally winds cause damage.

For now, residents should prepare for more unsettled weather—short bursts of rain, thunder, and strong gusts—before the monsoon firmly establishes itself over larger parts of the state.

A late-evening earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale rattled parts of Kessla block in Narmadapuram district on Monday, briefly worrying residents though no injuries or structural damage have been reported.

Felt across villages
Initial reports and local residents said the tremor was felt in Chichwani and nearby Chhitapura village, around 9:38–9:39 pm IST. “I was sleeping on the terrace when I felt a short but sharp vibration — it felt like the house shook for a few seconds,” said a resident of Chhitapura who requested anonymity. Several other villagers told reporters they stepped out briefly before returning inside when they found nothing broken.

Seismic data and timing
According to updates on the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and National Centre for Seismology (NCS) websites, the event was recorded at 9:39 pm IST on 8 June 2026. The epicentre was logged at latitude 22.367°N and longitude 77.688°E, with a focal depth of about 10 km. The measured magnitude of 3.8 places the tremor in the light category, which typically produces noticeable shaking but rarely causes significant damage.

Official responses
Local officials confirmed receipt of initial information. “We received reports of a tremor in the Kessla block. There are no immediate reports of casualties or damage,” said Nilesh Sharma, SDM of Narmadapuram, adding that teams had been asked to check vulnerable structures and report any incidents. A member of the Janpad Panchayat, Santosh Sallam, said he visited affected habitations late on Monday to reassure residents and gather details.

Ground-level reactions
Several villagers described a momentary rush of alarm. “People came out of their homes and stood on the road for some minutes,” a shopkeeper in Chichwani said. Many returned indoors when they saw no visible cracks or fallen objects. Social media posts from local users circulated short clips and messages about the shaking, but those posts contained no evidence of damage.

Why magnitude matters
Seismologists say quakes around magnitude 3–4 are common in tectonically active parts of India and usually felt locally. “A magnitude 3.8 event at a shallow depth like 10 km can be clearly felt by people near the epicentre. Structural damage is unlikely unless buildings are already weakened,” an earthquake researcher not connected with the event told this newsroom. The central Indian region has a mixed seismic profile, with most damaging quakes historically concentrated in other zones, though isolated shallow tremors are possible.

Checks underway
Local administration and panchayat officials said they were performing a quick assessment of public infrastructure — schools, health centres and older masonry houses — to ensure there were no hidden damages. “We have asked gram sevaks and patwaris to report by morning. If anything is found, we will act immediately,” the SDM said. No emergency services were mobilised overnight.

Public advice
Authorities reminded residents of basic safety steps: move to open spaces if you feel shaking, avoid standing under heavy fixtures, and check for gas leaks or electrical faults after tremors. The NCS and IMD continue to update their earthquake bulletins online and through official channels.

Context and outlook
While the tremor caused momentary alarm, its light magnitude and shallow depth explain why the shaking was noticeable but not destructive. The district administration will continue routine checks, and seismological agencies will monitor for any aftershocks, although aftershock probability following small quakes is generally low. Residents said normal life resumed by early Tuesday morning, with many sharing a mild sense of unease but no calls for evacuation.
