Former CM represents party before Chief Justice Sujoy Paul’s bench; highlights attacks on workers following 2026 Assembly results.

In a move that caught the legal fraternity and political observers by surprise, Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee arrived at the Calcutta High Court on Thursday afternoon dressed in a lawyer’s black gown. The former Chief Minister appeared before a Division Bench led by Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Parthasarathi Sen to personally argue a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding alleged widespread violence against her party workers following the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Unexpected appearance in courtroom

The sight of the TMC supremo in formal legal attire created a stir within the court premises. While Banerjee holds an LL.B. degree from Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College, her appearance as an arguing counsel is rare. Accompanied by senior advocate and party colleague Kalyan Banerjee, she walked into the Chief Justice's courtroom around noon.

The move is being seen as a high-stakes political statement following the recent election results, where the BJP secured a significant victory in the state.

Allegations of systemic violence

The PIL, filed by advocate Shirshanya Bandyopadhyay, alleges that TMC supporters and local leaders have been subjected to systematic attacks across several districts. During the proceedings, Banerjee informed the bench that the situation on the ground was one of "extreme distress."

"Our offices are being vandalized, and workers are being forced to flee their homes in many areas," she submitted before the court. She further alleged that women and children have not been spared in the unrest and claimed that at least 10 party workers had lost their lives in various incidents since the results were declared.

Chaos outside court premises

The legal drama was not limited to the courtroom. As Banerjee was exiting the High Court building following the hearing, she was met with "thief" slogans from a section of lawyers present on the premises. The situation briefly turned chaotic as TMC legal cell members and security personnel struggled to escort her to her vehicle.

Kalyan Banerjee later addressed the media, condemning the heckling. "The court is a place for legal arguments, not for public branding or political slogans. If a former Chief Minister can face such conduct inside the temple of justice, one can only imagine the plight of ordinary workers in remote villages," he said.

Context of the PIL

The petition highlights specific incidents in South 24 Parganas, Howrah, and parts of North Bengal. It seeks the court’s intervention to provide immediate protection to displaced workers and a directive to the state police to act against "hooliganism" that is allegedly occurring in plain sight.

The TMC has also linked this unrest to the "Special Intensive Revision" (SIR) of electoral rolls, an issue they previously challenged in the Supreme Court. The party maintains that the deletion of over 90 lakh names from the voter list had a direct bearing on the election outcome.

Judicial observation and next steps

Chief Justice Sujoy Paul’s bench took note of the submissions and the gravity of the allegations. While the court did not pass an immediate interim order, it has asked the state administration to file a status report on the law and order situation by early next week.

The matter is expected to be heard again on Tuesday. For now, the images of Mamata Banerjee in a lawyer’s robe have dominated the political discourse in Bengal, signaling that the TMC is prepared to take its fight from the streets to the highest corridors of the judiciary.

Security tightened at seven locations until May 4 as TMC and BJP trade allegations over strong room access and postal ballot handling

Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has been clamped outside strong rooms across Kolkata until May 4, with authorities moving to restrict unlawful assembly and movement in sensitive areas following overnight tensions over alleged unauthorised access to EVM storage facilities.

The restrictions cover seven locations including Khudiram Anushilan Kendra, Hastings House Complex, APC Roy Polytechnic College, St. Thomas Boys’ High School, Sakhawat Memorial Government Girls’ High School, Ballygunge Government High School, and Babasaheb Ambedkar Education University.

Late Night Visit

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spent approximately four hours inside the strong room at Sakhawat Memorial Government Girls’ High School late Thursday night, emerging around 12:30 am. Officials said she visited the facility after her party raised concerns over suspected irregular activity.

Speaking after the visit, Banerjee warned of strong resistance against any attempt to tamper with EVMs or manipulate the vote count. She alleged that central forces briefly stopped her from accessing the area outside the strong room before she was allowed entry.

Protest at Khudiram Kendra

Trouble first flared around 8 pm at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra, where TMC candidate Kunal Ghosh and minister Shashi Panja staged a sit-in protest. The demonstration came after a video shared by the TMC on X showed what the party claimed were Election Commission officials along with BJP members attempting to open ballot boxes.

Election Commission officials tried to convince the TMC leaders, but they continued their strike until around 9 pm. Seeing the gathering of both TMC and BJP workers swell, a large number of security forces were deployed. By 9:30 pm, BJP workers accused the Bengal Police of lathi charge amid sloganeering and uproar.

EC Clarifies Position

The Election Commission of India has rejected all tampering allegations. In a statement, officials clarified that seven Assembly constituency strong rooms are located within the Khudiram Anushilan Kendra, all of which were closed and sealed in the presence of candidates, election agents, and the General Observer after polling concluded. The final strong room was sealed at approximately 5:15 am.

The Commission stated that a separate strong room within the premises has been designated for postal ballots. Segregation of ballots was carried out from 4 pm in the corridor outside the strong rooms, and political parties were formally informed via email.

Political Reactions

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari claimed on social media that the party’s election agent, advocate Suryaneel Das, remained inside the strong room premises during Banerjee’s visit and kept a close watch to ensure no irregular activity took place.

State BJP chief Samik Bhattacharya said Banerjee is “unable to digest her defeat,” adding that if she believes the BJP and the Election Commission are synonymous, she should approach the Supreme Court. BJP leader Rahul Sinha asserted that Banerjee has “accepted defeat even before counting.”

TMC MP Saugata Roy maintained that “unauthorised people entered the strong room from outside” and alleged that some individuals from Gujarat were shouting slogans outside the school where votes for the Chief Minister’s constituency will be counted.

Security Beefed Up

Kolkata Police Joint Commissioner Rupesh Kumar said additional CAPF and state forces have been deployed in sensitive areas, with extra guard rails placed at key locations. Access to CCTV footage of strong rooms will be restricted to authorised personnel only, with parties required to submit names of agents who can view the feed.

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee will hold a virtual meeting on Friday with counting agents and key party stakeholders to review preparedness ahead of the vote count.

AJUP chief alleges police high-handedness during voting

Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir on Thursday staged a sit-in protest in Murshidabad’s Naoda area following a violent clash with Trinamool Congress workers, as West Bengal recorded a voter turnout of 41.11 per cent till 11 am in the first phase of Assembly elections.

Clash Erupts During Morning Hours

Trouble broke out when Kabir arrived at the spot to assess the situation after a crude bomb was hurled late Wednesday night. Stones were pelted from both sides as TMC workers confronted the AJUP leader. Police and CRPF personnel rushed to control the enraged crowd.

Speaking to this portal, Kabir alleged that police were acting in a heavy-handed manner against his supporters. He claimed his party workers were being assaulted unnecessarily. The AJUP chief also asserted that clashes had broken out between BJP and TMC workers in Siliguri during polling.

EVM Glitches and Other Disturbances

Technical issues disrupted voting across multiple constituencies. Reports confirmed EVM malfunctions in Behrampore’s Kandi block, Malda’s Chanchal constituency, and Alipurduar’s Kalchini area. Each machine was replaced after brief delays.

In Uttar Dinajpur’s Chopra block, three women were allegedly assaulted by CRPF personnel. One woman reportedly sustained head injuries near Booth No. 163. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

Suvendu Adhikari Raises Allegations

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari cast his vote around 8 am at Booth No. 70 in Nandigram. He alleged that a Booth Level Officer was using her mobile phone to influence voters in favour of TMC. Adhikari said he intervened and asked her to stop immediately.

The Leader of the Opposition also claimed that a murder accused was threatening voters in the region. He asserted his fight was against TMC “goons” and not any religious community. BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul echoed similar sentiments, calling the ruling party a “criminal and goon party”.

Voter Turnout and Peaceful Spots

Despite the trouble in Murshidabad, long queues formed peacefully in Birbhum, Asansol, and Medinipur. An 88-year-old voter, Kalyani Mahato, praised the improved polling arrangements this year. Elderly and differently-abled voters turned out in large numbers across most districts.

By 9 am, Bengal had recorded 18.76 per cent voting. Tamil Nadu saw 37.56 per cent turnout by 11 am for its single-phase polling. High alert was declared in Bihar’s Kishanganj, Purnia and Katihar districts along the Bengal border due to cross-border voter movement.

Political Background and What Next

West Bengal is voting across 152 seats in this first phase. The primary contest remains between TMC and BJP. Mamata Banerjee seeks a fourth consecutive term, which would make her the first woman in India to achieve that feat. The remaining 142 seats go to polls on 29 April. Results will be declared on 4 May.

BJP leader accuses TMC of corruption and exploitation as Bengal heads for two-phase assembly polls on April 23 and 29, with results on May 4.

Suvendu Adhikari's Campaign Pitch

Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and BJP candidate from Nandigram and Bhabanipur, struck a strong note during election campaigning on Wednesday. He declared that the public is ready for change and raised the slogan “Har ghar bhagwa chhaega, Ram Rajya aaega”.

Adhikari targeted the ruling Trinamool Congress, calling its leaders “brokers” who have been exploiting the people of Bengal for years. He alleged widespread corruption under the Mamata Banerjee government and claimed that while citizens celebrate Bengali New Year, the Chief Minister appears disconnected from public sentiment.

TMC Faces Heat Over Governance Issues

The BJP has intensified attacks on the TMC, accusing it of failing to deliver on basic issues like law and order, employment, and welfare. Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while campaigning, alleged that tea garden workers in Bengal continue to face poverty and neglect despite central funds reaching other sectors in neighbouring states. She questioned why the TMC government has not ensured fair wages for these workers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing BJP workers under the ‘Mera Booth Sabse Mazboot’ initiative on Tuesday, highlighted rising violence and an atmosphere of fear in the state. He pointed to youth unemployment and government employees approaching courts for justice as signs of administrative failure.

Voter List Row Intensifies

Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP of deleting over 90 lakh names from voter lists as part of a conspiracy to influence the polls. BJP leaders, including Sukanta Majumdar, rejected the charge and said any deletions fall under the responsibility of state officials such as BDOs and SDOs working under the TMC administration.

Anurag Thakur hit back at Banerjee’s claims, alleging that the TMC provides shelter to wrongdoers. He coined the phrase “4 May aaegi, Mamata Banerjee jayegi”, referring to the counting day when results of the West Bengal assembly elections 2026 are expected.

Delimitation Debate Echoes in Tamil Nadu

Parallel developments in Tamil Nadu have added a national dimension to the campaign discourse. Chief Minister MK Stalin convened an emergency meeting of DMK MPs and district secretaries to discuss the Centre’s proposed delimitation exercise. He described it as possible “punishment” for southern states’ contribution to India’s progress and called for black flag protests.

DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran stated that all DMK MPs will vote against the delimitation bill and wear black attire in Parliament. Congress leader KC Venugopal acknowledged genuine concerns among southern and smaller states over changes in representation based on the latest census.

BJP leaders, including K Annamalai, dismissed Stalin’s remarks as routine politics and expressed confidence in the NDA’s prospects in Tamil Nadu, where polling is scheduled for April 23.

Background of High-Stakes Polls

West Bengal’s 294-member assembly will go to polls in two phases — 152 seats on April 23 and 142 on April 29 — with vote counting on May 4. The TMC has been in power since 2011, while the BJP has steadily expanded its footprint in the state.

The campaign has seen sharp exchanges over voter rights, central funds, and governance. Home voting for elderly and persons with disabilities is underway in districts like Jhargram to ensure smooth participation.

Impact on Voters and Political Landscape

These developments come amid heightened public interest in governance, development, and political accountability. Issues like women’s reservation, linked to delimitation, have also drawn comments from leaders across parties, with some welcoming the 33 per cent quota while questioning its timing with the bill.

Analysts note that the coming days will test the TMC’s hold in its stronghold against a resurgent BJP pushing for a regime change. Public fatigue with alleged corruption and law and order concerns could play a key role.

What Lies Ahead

With just over a week left for the first phase of voting, both sides are expected to intensify door-to-door campaigns and rallies. The Election Commission has put in place measures for free and fair polls, including heavy security deployment.

The outcome on May 4 will shape not only Bengal’s political future but also influence broader national debates on federalism and representation. For the latest updates on West Bengal assembly elections 2026 and other India news today, developments continue to unfold rapidly.

BJP's 'Bijoy Sankalpa Sabha' marks PM's first campaign rally in West Bengal since assembly elections were announced; TMC governance, law and order in crosshairs

BJP Opens Bengal Battle

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday formally launched the Bharatiya Janata Party's election campaign in West Bengal, addressing a massive 'Bijoy Sankalpa Sabha' at the Ras Mela grounds in Cooch Behar — a district that has steadily emerged as one of the party's most reliable strongholds in the state's north.

The rally, scheduled at 4:15 pm, marked the PM's first election meeting in the state since poll dates were officially announced. It also constituted his fourth public meeting at the same Ras Mela grounds, having previously addressed gatherings there during the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha campaigns and the 2021 assembly polls.

TMC's Record on Trial

During the rally, Modi was expected to outline BJP's vision for a "developed West Bengal", highlight issues raised in the party's recently released 'People's Chargesheet' against the ruling Trinamool Congress, and press hard on governance failures, law and order deterioration, and allegations of corruption.

Party leaders framed the event as more than an electoral opener. According to a BJP statement, the Prime Minister's visit was "centred on transitioning West Bengal from an era of systemic 'bhoy' (fear) to a future of 'bhorosa' (trust)", and the rally was described as "a definitive launchpad to replace the chronicle of betrayal with a commitment to security and growth."

North Bengal: The Saffron Citadel

Cooch Behar was not an arbitrary choice. In the 2021 assembly elections, BJP won 30 of the 54 seats in north Bengal, with Cooch Behar contributing seven of the nine seats from the district. The region has delivered consistently for the party across electoral cycles, and BJP is keen to consolidate those gains with boots on the ground well before the April 23 first phase of polling.

Among the development projects highlighted in the district is a Rs 1,010-crore city gas distribution initiative, which party functionaries have been projecting as evidence of the Centre's commitment to the region.

Last Bengal Visit: March 14

Modi had last visited the state on March 14, when he addressed a major rally at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, marking the culmination of BJP's statewide 'Parivartan Yatra' campaign. During that visit, he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for infrastructure and connectivity projects worth approximately Rs 18,680 crore, including national highway developments valued at around Rs 16,990 crore, covering over 420 kilometres of road projects.

Campaign Machine Rolls On

The April 5 rally is set to be followed by a series of public meetings, roadshows, and organisational programmes by senior BJP leaders across the state ahead of the polls, as the party gears up for what it has described as a final push for a decisive mandate in Bengal.

Meanwhile, TMC has been mounting its counter-offensive. West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim, contesting from Kolkata Port constituency, warned that a BJP government in the state could damage local culture. "Hatred in politics is very wrong," he said, adding that the party's focus remained on development and direct engagement with voters.

Two-Phase Vote, May 4 Count

Elections to the 294-member West Bengal Legislative Assembly will be held in two phases — on April 23 and April 29 — with votes counted on May 4. The contest is shaping up as a direct, high-decibel clash between the BJP's national machinery and the TMC's incumbent organisational depth, with north Bengal expected to be among the most hotly contested stretches of the electoral map.

What to Watch Ahead

With Modi's Bengal poll campaign now officially underway, the coming days will see an escalating battle of narratives. BJP's central leadership — including Home Minister Amit Shah and party president JP Nadda — is expected to intensify its presence across the state. TMC, for its part, will rely heavily on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's personal campaign, with the CM herself contesting from Bhabanipur.

The Cooch Behar rally has set the tone: governance failures, alleged corruption, and the promise of a "fear-free" Bengal are expected to remain the core of BJP's message through the final weeks of campaigning before the West Bengal assembly elections 2026.
