A violent clash between two groups in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa city triggered panic late Wednesday night after stone pelting and physical assault broke out in the Machhariya Gate area under City Kotwali police station limits. The incident escalated rapidly following a minor argument, with more than a dozen people allegedly involved in the confrontation. During the chaos, a youth attempting to flee the spot on a scooter lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a wall, suffering serious head injuries.

According to local residents and eyewitnesses, the incident took place in the Upperhati locality near Machhariya Gate, where tensions flared between two groups allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Sources said a verbal altercation between a few individuals quickly turned aggressive, leading to open fighting on the road.

As the dispute intensified, members of both groups allegedly began attacking each other with punches and kicks before stone pelting started in the area. Residents said the confrontation continued for a long time, creating fear and confusion among people living nearby. Several locals reportedly rushed indoors while others fled the area to avoid getting caught in the violence.

Eyewitnesses claimed that more than a dozen individuals gathered on the road during the incident and continued the clash despite repeated attempts by bystanders to calm the situation. The violence reportedly caused chaos across the locality, with stones scattered on the street and loud shouting heard throughout the neighbourhood.

During the disturbance, a young man allegedly tried to escape the spot on a scooter. However, due to high speed and panic during the incident, he reportedly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a wall nearby. The impact left him critically injured, particularly on the head.

Local residents immediately gathered near the injured youth and arranged to shift him to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital for emergency treatment. According to hospital sources, the youth sustained severe head injuries and his condition was said to be serious at the time of admission. His identity had not been officially confirmed till late night.

The incident has sparked anger among residents over the alleged delay in police response. People living in the locality claimed that repeated calls were made to police after the clash started, but officers reportedly reached the spot nearly two hours later. Locals alleged that timely intervention could have prevented the violence from escalating and might have reduced the severity of the injuries suffered by the youth.

Residents also accused authorities of failing to maintain regular police patrolling in the area. According to locals, incidents involving antisocial elements and late-night disturbances have increased in recent months, creating fear among families and shopkeepers living in the neighbourhood.

Several residents said they no longer feel safe during late evening hours because groups of youths frequently gather in the locality. People demanded stricter police monitoring and immediate action against those involved in the violence.

Police officials later reached the area and brought the situation under control. Officers inspected the spot and began collecting information from witnesses and residents. Authorities are also trying to identify all individuals involved in the clash and determine what exactly triggered the confrontation.

City Kotwali police station in-charge Nisha Mishra confirmed that police have taken cognisance of the incident and started an investigation. Officials said CCTV footage from nearby areas and statements from local residents are being examined as part of the probe.

Police sources indicated that the identities of several people involved in the fight are yet to be verified. Authorities are also investigating whether the clash was linked to any previous rivalry or if it erupted suddenly during alcohol consumption.

The violent incident in Rewa has once again raised concerns over law and order and the increasing presence of antisocial activities in residential areas. Local residents said stronger surveillance and regular police patrols are necessary to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Sehore Boat Safety Violations Raise Alarm at Babri Ghat

Sehore boat safety violations come under scrutiny as overloaded vessels ferry people and vehicles without life jackets or basic safeguards

Unsafe boat operations at Babri Ghat in Sehore have triggered fresh concerns, with visuals and local accounts pointing to widespread violations of basic safety norms. Boats at the river crossing are reportedly carrying far more passengers than permitted, along with tractors, cars and motorcycles—often in the same trip.

The issue has drawn attention in the wake of recent water-related accidents elsewhere in the state, but on the ground, little appears to have changed until now.

Overloading on display

At Babri Ghat, boats are being used as multipurpose carriers. Eyewitnesses said it is common to see passengers packed tightly alongside heavy vehicles, with operators prioritising volume over safety. The practice not only exceeds capacity limits but also increases the risk of imbalance midstream.

There are no visible checks at the boarding point, and passengers are left to board at their own discretion. Morning and late afternoon hours reportedly see the heaviest rush.

Missing safety measures

Equally worrying is the absence of basic safety equipment. None of the boats seen in recent visuals appeared to carry life jackets. There were no emergency response arrangements either—no divers stationed nearby, no rescue boats on standby.

According to standard norms for motorised boats, fire extinguishers are mandatory. However, those too were missing at the site. There were also no warning boards or signage to guide passengers about safe travel limits.

Lessons yet unlearnt

The situation comes despite heightened awareness following the Bargi Dam incident, where lapses in safety had drawn statewide criticism. Locals say the current practices suggest those lessons have not translated into enforcement on the ground.

“Initial reports indicate that even after previous incidents, monitoring remains weak,” a local resident said, pointing to the continued overloading and lack of supervision.

Passenger concerns grow

Passengers using the route admit they feel uneasy but often have little choice. Rajeev Patel, a regular commuter, said travelling on overloaded boats feels risky, especially when vehicles are loaded alongside people.

Others echoed similar concerns, noting that the absence of life jackets makes even short crossings stressful. Some said they wait longer for less crowded boats, but such options are limited during peak hours.

Residents and daily commuters have also raised questions over administrative inaction. They allege that the contractor operating the boats has been allowed to function without strict oversight, leading to repeated violations.

Sources familiar with the matter said inspections have been sporadic, and enforcement of rules has largely depended on complaints rather than routine checks.

SDM steps in

Following growing concern, Bherunda Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sudhir Kushwah conducted a site inspection. According to officials, strict instructions have now been issued to the contractor to adhere to prescribed capacity limits and ensure that every passenger is provided a life jacket.

The SDM also directed that boats undergo regular technical checks and be operated only by experienced personnel. Installation of warning signage, barricading at the and dissemination of safety information have also been ordered.

Warning of action

Officials have indicated that failure to comply will invite strict action against the contractor. “Local authorities confirmed that any negligence going forward will not be tolerated,” an official said, adding that monitoring will be stepped up in the coming days.

For now, Sehore boat safety violations remain a pressing concern, with the coming weeks likely to determine whether the directives issued translate into real change on the ground.

Organized racket used forged death certificates and mule accounts to siphon insurance payouts across Gwalior, Morena, and Ratlam.

The state’s Crime Investigation Department (CID) has registered two cases involving a sophisticated ₹2.5 crore fraud linked to the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY). Officials confirmed on Thursday that the investigation into the organized racket, which spanned across districts including Gwalior, Morena, and Ratlam, reveals a deeply systematic approach to insurance siphoning.

Systemic Exploitation of Policies

Preliminary findings indicate that the gang functioned by procuring a massive volume of insurance policies through a network of dubious bank accounts. In many instances, policies were issued in the names of individuals completely unaware that their identity had been compromised. The scheme often involved securing multiple policies for the same person or family members from different insurance providers to maximize the illicit gains.

Forged Documents and Payouts

The core of the operation relied on obtaining forged death certificates from local municipal bodies. Within a window as short as one month to a year after purchasing the policies, the suspects would falsely declare the insured individuals as deceased. Based on these fabricated records, the gang successfully processed and received insurance claims. Investigators have noted that in several cases, people were marked dead while they were very much alive.timesofindia.

Tracing the Financial Trail

Authorities found that the money was routed through a complex web of "mule accounts" to avoid immediate detection. Once the insurance payouts hit these accounts, the funds were quickly withdrawn from ATMs located in various cities, including Ratlam and even outside the state in Rajasthan, such as Sawai Madhopur and Ganganagar. The CID has now moved to identify these beneficiaries and freeze the suspicious bank accounts associated with the scam.

Expanding Scope of Investigation

Special Director General (CID) Pankaj Srivastava stated that the criminal operation was conducted with a high level of coordination across multiple districts. While the current investigation centers on the confirmed ₹2.5 crore discrepancy, officials are now working to determine if the network extends further. Teams are currently scanning banking and insurance networks to identify other potential victims and participants in the organized fraud.

Policy Security Under Scrutiny

The PMJJBY is a vital social security initiative designed to provide a ₹2 lakh life insurance cover to economically weaker sections at an annual premium of ₹436. The abuse of this scheme by organized gangs has raised serious concerns regarding verification processes at both the municipal and banking levels. As the investigation progresses, state authorities are expected to push for tighter oversight to prevent similar misuse of government social security nets.

Rewa quarry accident highlights illegal mining concerns as villagers demand strict action after woman’s death

A 35-year-old woman died after falling into a stone quarry in Rewa on Tuesday morning, in an incident that has once again drawn attention to alleged illegal mining activities in the area. The matter occurred near Baijnathpur in Naubasta village, where complaints of unauthorised excavation have surfaced repeatedly over the past few months.

The deceased has been identified as Sumitra Kevat. According to initial reports, she fell into a deep quarry pit, triggering panic at the site. In the immediate aftermath, a tractor present at the location also overturned, adding to the chaos and concern among those present.

Incident unfolds quickly

Locals said the sequence of events unfolded rapidly during the morning hours. Sumitra had reportedly gone to the quarry area when she slipped and fell into the pit. Family members and others were nearby at the time but were unable to prevent the fall.

The tractor overturning soon after the fall created a tense situation, with villagers gathering at the site as word spread. Some attempted to assist before authorities arrived, though by then, it was too late.

Illegal mining concerns

Residents of Naubasta and nearby areas allege that illegal stone extraction has been ongoing for months without effective intervention. They claim heavy machinery and tractors frequently transport mined material, often operating without adequate safety measures.

“Accidents like this have been waiting to happen,” said a local resident, pointing to the depth of the quarry pits and lack of fencing or warning signs. According to villagers, repeated complaints to authorities have not resulted in sustained action.

Police response

According to police officials, the woman had entered the quarry area where illegal excavation was suspected. “She fell into a deep pit, which led to her death,” a police officer said, adding that a case has been registered.

Station in-charge Ghanshyam Mishra confirmed that a team reached the spot soon after receiving information. The body was recovered and sent for post-mortem examination.

“We are investigating all aspects of the case, including the role of illegal mining. Necessary action will be taken based on findings,” he said.

Family present at site

Sources familiar with the matter said that members of the victim’s family were present when the incident took place. The suddenness of the inciedent left them in shock, with little time to react.

There were no immediate reports of injuries from the tractor overturning, though it heightened the urgency of the situation and raised questions about operational safety at such sites.

Villagers demand action

Following the incident, villagers gathered and voiced strong objections to the alleged inaction against illegal mining. They demanded immediate steps to halt unauthorised quarrying in the area.

Residents argued that stricter monitoring and enforcement could prevent such tragedies. “If authorities had acted earlier, this could have been avoided,” one villager said, echoing a sentiment shared by many at the site.

Investigation underway

Authorities have indicated that a detailed inquiry is being carried out. Officials are expected to examine whether safety norms were violated and identify those responsible for illegal mining activities.

The Rewa quarry accident has once again brought focus to the risks associated with unregulated excavation, particularly in rural pockets where oversight may be limited. For now, the administration faces mounting pressure to ensure accountability and prevent further incidents.

A Balod canal drowning incident claimed lives of an ambulance EMT and his daughter; rescue teams recovered the girl’s body 20 km downstream after an overnight search

Tragedy in Tandula Canal

A tragic drowning incident in Balod has claimed the lives of a 35-year-old ambulance employee and his 12-year-old daughter after they were swept away by strong currents in the Tandula canal. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon near Piparchhedi village, sending shockwaves across the district.

Initial reports indicate that the victims were bathing in the canal when the water flow suddenly proved too strong. While the father’s body was recovered the same day, the daughter’s body was found nearly 20 kilometres downstream on Wednesday morning.

Family Visit Turns Fatal

According to officials, the deceased, identified as Taiman Ganjir, had travelled from Dhobanpuri village to his in-laws’ house in Piparchhedi for a family wedding. On Tuesday around noon, he went to the nearby canal with his daughter Palanki and a relative’s child.

Locals said the outing was routine, with several families visiting the canal during the day. However, what began as a casual visit turned into a fatal accident within minutes.

Learning to Swim

Sources familiar with the matter said Ganjir was attempting to teach his daughter how to swim when the incident occurred. At the time, water release from the Tandula reservoir had increased, resulting in a strong current in the canal.

The three children reportedly misjudged the depth and force of the water. Soon after entering, they began to struggle and were pulled along by the current.

Rescue Efforts Begin

Hearing their cries, locals rushed to the spot. One of the girls, identified as a niece, was rescued after bystanders jumped into the canal. However, Ganjir and his daughter were quickly swept out of sight.

Police and disaster response teams reached the scene shortly after being alerted. A search operation was launched with the help of divers and local volunteers. Authorities also coordinated with officials managing the Gangrel dam to temporarily reduce water discharge and aid rescue efforts.

Bodies Recovered Hours Apart

Divers managed to locate Ganjir’s body around 400 metres from the site later that evening. The search for his daughter continued overnight.

On Wednesday morning, officials confirmed that Palanki’s body had been found nearly 20 kilometres away from the original spot, highlighting the intensity of the current in the canal.

Service Background

Ganjir was employed as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the 108 ambulance service and was posted at the district hospital in Balod. He had previously served in the Pakhanjur region and had recently been reassigned following a change in service operators.

Colleagues described him as an experienced and dedicated worker who had been in the emergency response system for several years.

Village in Mourning

The incident has left Piparchhedi and surrounding areas in deep shock. Residents said the family had arrived just a day earlier for a wedding celebration, which has now turned into a scene of grief.

Local authorities confirmed that a case has been registered and further investigation is underway to ascertain all circumstances surrounding the accident.

The Balod canal drowning incident has once again raised concerns about safety near fast-flowing irrigation canals, especially during periods of high water release. Officials are expected to review safety measures and issue advisories to prevent similar tragedies.

A major fire at the Bhopal garbage transfer station in Anna Nagar triggered panic late on Saturday night after flames engulfed a large section of the waste handling facility and continued to burn for more than eight hours. Officials said nearly 25 tonnes of waste were reduced to ashes in the blaze, which broke out around midnight and remained uncontrolled till Sunday morning.

The Bhopal garbage transfer station fire drew a large emergency response, with fire crews from 11 stations deployed to contain the flames. More than 50 fire tenders and water tankers were pressed into service as teams worked through the night to stop the fire from spreading further.

Firefighting Continues Overnight

The fire erupted at the garbage transfer station located in Anna Nagar, one of the city’s waste collection and segregation points. The site lies close to a main road and residential stretches, raising immediate concern among local residents as thick smoke and flames spread across the compound.

According to officials, fire tenders from Govindpura, Fatehgarh, Bairagarh, Kolar, Gandhinagar and other stations were rushed to the spot soon after the fire was reported. Despite continuous water discharge through the night, firefighters were still battling active flames in parts of the yard on Sunday morning.

Waste And Cloth Burnt

Officials on site said the fire first broke out in the recycling section of the facility, which had reportedly remained shut for nearly a month. The section contained a large stockpile of recyclable cloth material, estimated at around 150 tonnes, along with nearly 25 tonnes of municipal waste.

Sources indicated that the presence of highly combustible cloth waste made firefighting difficult and allowed the flames to spread quickly. The mixed waste and fabric stock generated intense heat, slowing containment efforts and forcing crews to continue cooling operations for several hours.

Residents Spend Sleepless Night

The Bhopal garbage transfer station fire caused panic in the surrounding locality, particularly among families living near the roadside adjacent to the plant. Residents remained awake through the night as smoke spread in the area and emergency vehicles moved in and out of the site.

Given the location of the facility close to the road and nearby habitation, civic officials and police personnel were deployed to manage movement and prevent crowding near the fire zone. Police remained stationed at the site as a precautionary measure through the night.

Cause Yet Unclear

The exact cause of the fire has not been established so far. Officials said the blaze appears to have started in the recycling unit, but the source of ignition is still under investigation.

As per reports, civic authorities are expected to assess whether negligence, stored material, or internal heat build-up contributed to the incident. No injuries or casualties had been reported till Sunday morning, according to officials present at the site.

Civic Teams On Alert

Municipal officials reached the site during the night and monitored the firefighting operation. The scale of the response reflected concern over the location of the facility and the volume of combustible material stored there.

The incident has also raised fresh questions over fire safety compliance at waste handling units located near populated areas. In recent Government Updates linked to urban safety, civic bodies have been asked to strengthen risk audits at waste disposal and transfer points, making this a significant Public Interest Story in the Latest News Today cycle.

Safety Review Likely

The Bhopal garbage transfer station fire is expected to prompt a detailed review of storage practices, fire preparedness and safety protocols at waste processing facilities across the city. Officials are likely to inspect whether inflammable recyclable stock was stored beyond safe limits at the Anna Nagar site.

With firefighting operations still underway, authorities will now focus on full containment, damage assessment and a technical inquiry into the cause of the Bhopal garbage transfer station fire.

Police Commissioner invokes Section 163 BNSS; Polytechnic, Akashvani, Kilol Park squares declared no-protest zones for two months

In a significant move affecting public demonstrations in the state capital, the Bhopal Police Commissioner has imposed a complete ban on protests, dharnas, and effigy burning at three major intersections near the Chief Minister’s house. The order, citing severe traffic disruption and risks to emergency services, came into effect late on Tuesday.

Three Key Squares Declared Restricted

The restricted zones include the bustling Polytechnic Square, Akashvani Square, and Kilol Park Square. Officials stated that these chowrahs serve as critical nodal points connecting the city’s arterial roads. Any gathering or blockade here directly chokes the flow of vehicles heading towards the airport, Hamidia Hospital, and the civil lines area.

Traffic and Emergency Services Cited

Police sources indicated that frequent protests at these locations often led to gridlocks lasting several hours. “Ambulances and fire brigade units have faced critical delays in the past due to unannounced demonstrations,” a senior traffic official said. The order explicitly notes the lack of viable alternative routes at these chowrahs, making any disruption unacceptable for public convenience.

Section 163 BNSS Enforced

The directive has been issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. This provision empowers the police commissioner to prohibit assemblies in specified areas to prevent public nuisance or danger. Legal experts confirm that the section is the successor to the colonial-era Section 144 of the CrPC but allows for more targeted restrictions.

No Permission Without Alternatives

According to the prohibitory order, no organisation or political party will be granted permission to hold a demonstration at these intersections. The commissioner’s office clarified that the ban applies strictly to the identified chowrahs and their immediate surrounding areas. Applicants for protests are now being directed to designated open grounds away from the VIP route.

Two-Month Ban in Effect

The commissioner’s order is effective immediately and will remain in force for the next two months. Police have stated that the restriction is temporary but necessary. Officials added that the situation will be reviewed after the stipulated period based on the law-and-order situation and public feedback.

Violation to Invite Penal Action

Authorities have warned of strict penal action against violators. Bhopal Police have increased patrolling around the notified squares. “Citizens are requested to cooperate and report any unauthorised gathering,” a police control room spokesperson said. The force has also prepared contingency plans to clear any spontaneous blockade.

Analysis: Balancing Rights and Order

Legal observers note that while the ban aids smooth traffic flow and emergency access, it renews the debate on designated protest zones. For now, the administration remains firm. As a latest news today update from the Madhya Pradesh capital, this order sets a precedent for managing public demonstrations on high-sensitivity routes across other India News Update cycles.

What Next for Agitating Groups

Political outfits and civil society members are now expected to seek alternative venues for their demonstrations. The collector’s office has hinted at formalising a list of designated protest grounds outside the restricted zone. As this public interest story develops, all eyes will be on compliance and potential legal challenges over the next two months.

A severe heatwave in India has intensified across several states, with temperatures ranging between 40°C and 45°C over the past five days, according to officials. States including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Odisha and West Bengal remain under alert as the mercury continues to rise.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has flagged continued heatwave conditions in many regions, warning of further escalation in the coming days.

Railway stations adapt

In Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur, where temperatures touched 43.8°C, authorities have initiated unusual cooling measures. Water sprinklers have been installed on railway platforms to provide relief to passengers exposed to extreme heat.

Officials indicated that such interventions aim to reduce surface temperatures and prevent heat-related illnesses among commuters.

Tourists affected badly

The heatwave has begun affecting tourism as well. In Agra, at least six visitors at the Taj Mahal reportedly fell ill due to excessive heat exposure. Rising temperatures have also led to a visible dip in tourist footfall in Rajasthan cities such as Jaipur and Udaipur.

Local administration teams have been placed on alert to respond to medical emergencies linked to heat stress.

Delhi schools on alert

In the national capital, where temperatures are expected to breach 45°C this week, authorities have issued specific guidelines for schools. Institutions have been instructed to ring a bell every 45 to 60 minutes to remind students to drink water.

Officials said the move is aimed at preventing dehydration and heatstroke among children, particularly during peak afternoon hours.

Warm nights warning

Madhya Pradesh, including Bhopal and eight other districts, has recorded a rare “warm night” warning. Night-time temperatures are expected to remain above 27°C, offering little respite from the daytime heat.

Weather experts noted that such conditions increase health risks as the human body does not get sufficient cooling time overnight.

Rain in northeast

While northern and central India battle extreme heat, the northeast is witnessing heavy rainfall. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya are likely to receive intense showers, with waterlogging already reported in parts of Guwahati.

The IMD has also issued rain alerts for Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura over the next 24 hours.

Storm alerts south

Southern and coastal regions are expected to see mixed weather conditions. Parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Karnataka, Kerala and coastal Goa may experience thunderstorms and rainfall.

Lightning warnings have been issued for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, prompting authorities to advise caution in vulnerable areas.

What lies ahead

According to forecasts, heatwave conditions will persist on April 23 across Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Odisha and Rajasthan. By April 24, humid weather is expected in Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, with scattered rainfall in parts of southern India.

As the heatwave in India continues, authorities are urging citizens to avoid direct sun exposure, stay hydrated and follow official advisories.

Chhattisgarh heatwave intensifies as Bilaspur hits 43°C and Raipur may cross 44°C. IMD warns of heatwave conditions and warm nights ahead.

Bilaspur recorded a scorching 43°C on Wednesday as the Chhattisgarh heatwave tightened its grip across the state, with little immediate relief in sight. In Raipur, the mercury is expected to climb further, possibly crossing 44°C, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The rising temperatures have pushed authorities to implement emergency measures in public spaces.

Railway Relief Measures

In response to the extreme heat, railway authorities in Bilaspur have installed a misting system at Platform No. 1. The system releases fine sprays of cool water to provide temporary relief to passengers. Officials said the initiative aims to reduce heat stress for commuters during peak afternoon hours, when temperatures are at their highest. Passengers at the station reported marginal comfort due to the cooling system, though the overall heat remained intense.

Temperature Forecast Trends

According to IMD data, central parts of Chhattisgarh may witness a slight dip of 1–2°C in the next 24 hours. However, this respite is expected to be short-lived. Meteorological projections indicate a rise of 2–3°C in the following days, potentially intensifying the ongoing Chhattisgarh heatwave conditions.

Raipur is likely to experience maximum temperatures around 44°C, with minimum temperatures hovering near 30°C, increasing discomfort levels during the night.

Heatwave Warning Issued

Weather officials have warned of heatwave conditions across several districts in central Chhattisgarh over the next four days. In addition, “warm night” conditions are expected in isolated areas, where night-time temperatures remain significantly above normal, offering little relief after sunset. Such conditions can aggravate health risks, especially for vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.

Active Weather Systems

Meteorologists attribute the prevailing weather pattern to a cyclonic circulation system over north Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas. This system extends southward through Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu up to the Comorin region.

According to officials, while the system may influence regional weather changes, it has not yet brought any significant cooling effect to the affected areas.

Dry Weather Ahead

The IMD has forecast predominantly dry weather across the state for the next three days. While isolated regions may experience fluctuations, no significant rainfall activity is expected in the immediate term.

The absence of cloud cover and precipitation continues to allow direct solar radiation, further escalating daytime temperatures.

Public Impact Rising

The ongoing Chhattisgarh heatwave has begun to impact daily life, with increased pressure on healthcare services and utilities. Water consumption has surged, and electricity demand has risen due to widespread use of cooling appliances.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, stay hydrated, and follow precautionary measures issued under public safety advisories.

Outlook Remains Harsh

Looking ahead, weather experts suggest that heatwave conditions may persist through the week, with only minor fluctuations in temperature. Without significant rainfall or western disturbances, relief appears unlikely in the near term.

The incident occurred in the Tikrapara police station area, raising fresh concerns over rising digital fraud cases in the city.

Victim Targeted

According to police inputs, the victim, Rohit Pal, a resident of RDA Colony, received a call between April 10 and April 16 from an unknown number. The caller claimed to be an official linked to the Regional Transport Office and informed him about a pending e-challan.

APK File Trap

The caller then sent an APK file to the victim’s mobile phone, instructing him to download it and complete the payment process. Believing it to be a legitimate government communication, the victim downloaded the file, unknowingly granting access to his device.

Money Transferred Quickly

Within a short span after the installation, cyber fraudsters allegedly gained control over the victim’s phone and bank-related applications. Officials said a total amount of Rs 7,42,209 was transferred from his account through multiple transactions.

Fraud Detected Later

The victim remained unaware of the fraudulent activity until he received transaction alerts from his bank the following day. The sudden withdrawal messages triggered panic, prompting him and his family to approach the police.

Police Investigation Begins

A complaint was registered by a family member, Pavitra Pal, under Section 66D of the Information Technology Act, which deals with cheating by personation using computer resources. Police have initiated an investigation with the assistance of the cyber cell.

Officials indicated that call detail records, bank transaction trails, and technical evidence are being analysed to trace the accused. “The modus operandi suggests a well-organised cyber fraud network. We are working to identify the suspects at the earliest,” a police officer said.

Rising Cyber Threat

This incident highlights a growing trend of APK-based scams, where fraudsters trick users into installing malicious applications disguised as official links. Cyber experts warn that such apps can access sensitive data, including banking credentials and OTPs, leading to financial losses.

Authorities have repeatedly advised citizens not to download files from unknown sources or click on suspicious links. Government agencies, including transport departments, do not send APK files for payments, officials clarified.

Public Advisory Issued

Police have urged residents to verify any communication related to fines or government payments through official websites or apps. Victims of cyber fraud are advised to report incidents immediately to the cyber helpline or local police to increase the chances of fund recovery.

The warning covers the Ganga plains, eastern coastal states, and western regions including Gujarat and Maharashtra, where above-normal temperatures and prolonged heatwave conditions are expected.

According to officials, the IMD heatwave alert indicates that many areas could see a higher number of heatwave days than usual, raising concerns for public health and infrastructure.

Regions at Risk

The alert highlights eastern and central parts of the country as particularly vulnerable. Southern West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana are expected to face the most severe conditions.

In northern and central India, states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and parts of Madhya Pradesh are also likely to experience heatwave spells. Western regions, including parts of Gujarat and northern Maharashtra, are expected to see rising temperatures as well.

Temperature Trends

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said several regions already record high baseline temperatures during this period. Vidarbha, for instance, typically sees temperatures of 41–42°C, while northern states such as Uttar Pradesh and Haryana often record 40–44°C in May.

He noted that the coming months could push temperatures even higher, requiring preparedness for extreme conditions.

Forecast Timeline

The IMD has projected that heatwave conditions may develop intermittently between April and June, with peak intensity expected in May. The department has already issued seasonal forecasts and continues to update them periodically.

Officials said extended-range forecasts are released every Thursday, covering the next four weeks, while district-level warnings are issued daily for up to seven days.

Alert Systems Activated

Authorities have stepped up efforts to disseminate warnings, particularly to vulnerable populations. According to officials, alerts are being shared through WhatsApp groups, public display systems, and government communication networks.

The National Disaster Management Authority’s common alert protocol is also being used to send notifications directly to mobile users, especially targeting outdoor workers such as labourers, street vendors, and farmers.

Public Health Concerns

Experts warn that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Urban areas may face additional stress due to the “urban heat island” effect, while rural regions could see impacts on agriculture and water availability.

Officials indicated that local administrations have been advised to prepare heat action plans, ensure water supply, and arrange medical support systems.

What Lies Ahead

The IMD heatwave alert suggests that rising temperatures during pre-monsoon months are becoming a recurring trend. While slight variations may occur year to year, the overall pattern points to increasing heat intensity.

Authorities are expected to continue issuing regular updates and advisories as conditions evolve. Citizens have been urged to follow official guidance, limit outdoor exposure during peak hours, and stay hydrated.
