A serious controversy has emerged from the Bastar Heritage Marathon 2026, held in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district, after allegations surfaced that some participants did not complete the race honestly. The 42-kilometre endurance event, which aimed to promote sportsmanship and regional culture, is now facing questions over fairness and monitoring systems.

The marathon was organized on 22 March, starting from Lalbagh Ground in Jagdalpur and concluding at the scenic Chitrakote Waterfall. The event attracted a large number of athletes from different regions, with the objective of showcasing Bastar’s natural beauty and encouraging athletic participation among youth.

Allegations of Cheating During the Race

The controversy began when participant Lohandiguda resident Pramila Mandavi raised concerns about two competitors, Neha and Kaushalya Netam. She alleged that the athletes did not run the entire distance and instead used a vehicle during the race. According to the complaint, they initially ran part of the course but later allegedly boarded a vehicle and rejoined the race closer to the finish point.

CCTV Footage Investigation

Following the complaint, local administration initiated a detailed investigation. CCTV footage reportedly confirmed that the two participants were seen travelling in a Scorpio vehicle during a portion of the marathon route. The visuals further indicated that they exited the vehicle near the final stretch and continued towards the finish line on foot.

Administrative Action and Result Revision

After reviewing the evidence, officials concluded that the rules had been violated. The accused participants were removed from the winner list, and the overall rankings were revised. Authorities also clarified that prize money would only be awarded to participants who completed the race fairly and without external assistance.
