A dramatic five-hour manhunt in Jabalpur ended with the arrest of one of the country’s most elusive train thieves, Harvinder Singh, whose unusual escape tactics and violent resistance stunned both police and locals. The accused had managed to evade authorities for years, committing thefts across multiple states without leaving behind any identifiable trace. His capture has now revealed a story filled with persistence, bravery, and calculated criminal methods.

The Arrest Operation

On April 7, a joint operation involving Khitola police, divers, and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) led to the capture of Harvinder Singh. Acting on specific intelligence, the team surrounded a pond where the accused had taken refuge. Instead of surrendering, he jumped into the water and remained hidden for nearly five hours, using lotus stems to breathe while submerged.

Despite the challenging conditions, the coordinated effort eventually forced him out of hiding. He was later presented in a railway court and handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) Bhopal-Itarsi unit for further interrogation.

Attempted Escape and Violent Resistance

While being escorted to the outpost, Harvinder attempted a daring escape. He asked to use the restroom, and as soon as the opportunity arose, he pushed a constable and ran nearly 50 meters. RPF constable Vinay Maurya immediately chased him down and managed to tackle him.

What followed was a fierce struggle. The accused picked up a stone and repeatedly struck Maurya on the head, causing severe bleeding. Despite the injury, Maurya held on tightly, refusing to let the suspect escape. With assistance from fellow constable Ashish Yadav, the accused was finally subdued and brought back into custody.

Bravery Amid Injury

Vinay Maurya suffered serious head injuries during the confrontation and was admitted to a private hospital. Fortunately, his condition is now reported to be stable and out of danger. His courage has drawn praise from senior officials, and both Maurya and Yadav are set to be rewarded by the RPF Inspector General for their bravery.

A Master of Train Thefts

Harvinder Singh, originally from Bijnor, had once worked with accomplices but later began operating alone. Over time, he became highly skilled in stealing from moving trains. His preferred method involved traveling in AC coaches, avoiding ticket checks by hiding in restrooms, and targeting passengers’ valuables during the night.

He avoided carrying mobile phones or identification documents, making it extremely difficult for authorities to trace him. This strategy allowed him to carry out thousands of thefts without revealing his identity.

Interstate Investigations Ahead

Following his arrest, multiple state police departments, including those from Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Visakhapatnam, are preparing to interrogate him. Officials believe his network of crimes spans across the country and could uncover several unsolved cases.

A Shocking Past

In a surprising revelation, Harvinder disclosed that he had once been involved in politics and even won a municipal councillor election in 2017. However, he later abandoned public life and turned to crime, eventually becoming a notorious figure in railway thefts.

During interrogation, Harvinder claimed that he had committed thousands of thefts without ever being identified. He admitted that his biggest advantage was leaving no trace behind, which kept him beyond the reach of law enforcement agencies for years. Now that he has been caught, he acknowledged that his identity as the infamous train thief is finally exposed.
