Young Gun Makes History

India's Ayush Shetty delivered one of the most remarkable performances by an Indian shuttler on the continental stage, defeating Indonesia's World No. 4 Jonatan Christie in the quarter-finals of the Badminton Asia Championships 2026 in Ningbo, China. The 20-year-old won 23-21, 21-17 in 54 minutes, becoming only the seventh Indian men's singles player to secure a medal at the Asian Championships and the first since HS Prannoy in 2018.

The Christie Upset, in Detail

The opening game was a tight contest, with Christie holding the advantage and reaching game point with a two-point lead. Ayush, however, held his nerve, saved two game points, and edged ahead to take the game 23-21.

The second game was no less gripping. Both players levelled scores multiple times before Ayush took control at 10-9, from where the Indian maintained his lead and closed out the match 21-17, extending his winning streak without dropping a single game in the tournament so far.

A Medal Already in the Bag

By reaching the semi-finals, Shetty has guaranteed India a podium finish at the continental championship. He became the first Indian man since HS Prannoy in 2018 to earn a singles medal, and the first Indian overall after Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty in 2023 to stand on the podium.

His name now joins an elite list that includes Dinesh Khanna (1965, 1969), Suresh Goel (1965), Prakash Padukone (1976), Pullela Gopichand (2000), Anup Sridhar (2007) and Prannoy (2018).

Journey Through the Draw

Shetty's run in Ningbo has been nothing short of a giant-killing spree. He earlier defanged World No. 7 Li Shi Feng 23-21, 21-17 in the round of 32, before getting the better of Chi Yu Jen 21-16, 21-12 in the pre-quarters. In every match so far, he has gone through without surrendering a single game — a statistic that speaks to his consistency and composure.

Vitidsarn Stands in the Way

Today's semi-final pits Shetty against an altogether different challenge. He is set to face top seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn, the Paris Olympics silver medallist and 2023 world champion, in the Badminton Asia Championships 2026 men's singles semi-final in Ningbo.

The two have met just once before on the circuit — in the Arctic Open 2025 round of 32, where the Thai star won 21-15, 21-16. However, form and momentum are firmly on Shetty's side heading into the contest.

If Shetty beats Kunlavut, he will become only the second Indian men's singles shuttler to reach the final of the prestigious continental showpiece, after Dinesh Khanna in 1965.

Mixed Bag for India Overall

While Shetty has been the undisputed standout in Ningbo, the broader Indian campaign has had its share of disappointments. PV Sindhu exited in the second round, Lakshya Sen was knocked out in the opening round itself, and HS Prannoy was also eliminated early. The weight of India's medal aspirations now rests squarely on the young shoulders of Shetty.

What Comes Next

The semi-final is scheduled for today, April 11, with the first match on court starting at 7:30 AM IST and Shetty's bout expected after 10 AM IST. The match will be live streamed on Badminton Asia's official Facebook page in India. Should he prevail against the world's top-ranked player, Ayush Shetty will have announced himself not just as India's next big hope in badminton, but as a genuine title contender at the highest level of Asian competition.
