‘Families Must Reflect on How Daughters Get Misled,’ Says RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat at Bhopal Event

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Dr. Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday said efforts to prevent cases of “love jihad” must begin within families, stressing that open dialogue at home is the most effective safeguard against deception and exploitation. Addressing the ‘Stri Shakti Samvad’ (Women Power Dialogue) in Bhopal, Bhagwat urged parents to introspect on how and why daughters may be misled and to remain alert without fostering fear or mistrust.

Speaking at Shivneri Bhavan, the RSS headquarters in the state capital, Bhagwat said continuous communication within households was essential. “Families must talk openly. Silence creates vulnerability,” he said, adding that awareness, caution and self-defence should be instilled in girls from an early age, while criminals must be dealt with strictly under the law.

Placing women at the centre of social and family life, Bhagwat described them as the foundation of society and the primary force shaping future generations. He said households function through the emotional, moral and organisational strength of women, who balance responsibilities and bind families together.

Rejecting comparisons based on superiority between men and women, Bhagwat said both were complementary and that social progress was possible only through cooperation. “Creation itself depends on harmony between the two,” he said.

The RSS chief also cautioned against what he described as blind westernisation in the name of modernity. He said Indian traditions recognise women beyond the role of motherhood, highlighting their leadership and resilience. Referring to figures such as Rani Laxmibai, Bhagwat said Indian women had demonstrated courage and power across historical periods.

Addressing mental health concerns, Bhagwat linked rising stress and suicide cases to breakdowns in family communication. He said no member of a household should feel isolated and warned that unrealistic expectations imposed on children often lead to emotional distress. Parents, he said, should focus on understanding their children’s interests rather than forcing predefined ambitions on them.

He further argued that the purpose of life should not be restricted to measurable success alone, but should emphasise meaningful living and emotional well-being.

On national development, Bhagwat said nation-building would remain incomplete without full participation of women. Despite making up nearly half the population, he noted, many women were still disconnected from broader social and national responsibilities. He called for targeted efforts to bring them into the mainstream of public life.

Concluding his address, Bhagwat said societies that respect women remain stable and prosperous, reiterating the long-held belief that social balance and progress depend on women’s dignity and participation.
