DMK MP Kanimozhi has criticised the Tamil Nadu government over the death of Kannanallur panchayat president Maharajan, alleging that the incident reflects a serious breakdown of law and order in the state.

Maharajan, 54, died after he was allegedly struck on the head with a brick during a protest over irregular drinking-water supply in Kannanallur, near Valliyur in Tirunelveli district. He had reportedly gone to the spot to speak to residents and calm the protesters.

According to police-linked reports, an argument broke out during the protest before Maharajan was attacked. He suffered severe head injuries and died while efforts were being made to take him for medical treatment. Police have registered a case and identified the alleged attacker, who was initially reported to be absconding.

Kanimozhi reacted to the incident on social media, describing the killing as shocking and saying that the fact that the attacker could escape showed that “law and order has completely broken down in Tamil Nadu.”

She demanded a thorough investigation, immediate action against those responsible and prosecution in accordance with law.

The incident followed a protest by residents over drinking-water supply in the village. Government data shows Kannanallur is covered under the Jal Jeevan Mission and had 1,013 tap connections recorded as of September 2, 2026, although the reported protest concerned residents' complaints about irregular supply.

Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Maharajan's death. The Tirunelveli district administration's official directory lists the district Superintendent of Police and Valliyur police authorities among the responsible law-and-order agencies.

Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh: History-sheeter Sohail Khan, who had been wanted in connection with the violent clash and stone-pelting in Bilaspur's Khaparganj area, surrendered before police on Tuesday night. He was taken into custody and questioned by the police.Khan has denied involvement in the violence, claiming that he was not present at the spot when the incident took place. He alleged that he was being falsely implicated and demanded a fair and impartial investigation. He also claimed that he had earlier been implicated in a suicide-related case.The violence took place on August 28 in the City Kotwali police station area after a dispute between two groups escalated into a clash and stone-pelting. Police intervened after the situation worsened, and personnel were also targeted with stones. Tarbahar TI Ravi Tiwari was among the police personnel injured in the incident. Local reports put the number of injured police personnel at nine.Police have since intensified searches for those allegedly involved in the violence. CCTV footage is being examined to identify additional suspects, while teams have been conducting searches at possible hideouts.According to the latest reports, 12 accused have now been arrested in connection with the case. Police had earlier arrested 11 people from both sides before Khan surrendered. Three of his alleged associates were also taken into custody from the Lalkhadar area, according to local reports.Another key accused, identified in police-related reports as Thakur Ram Singh, is still reported to be absconding. Police are continuing efforts to locate him and other suspects.The dispute is reported to have followed a controversy involving a social-media comment and an earlier dispute between the groups. Bengaluru Police have transferred 31 Bangladeshi nationals detained during a citywide verification drive to a holding centre in Malda, West Bengal, where further formalities for their deportation will be completed.

 Bengaluru Police have sent 31 Bangladeshi nationals to Malda in West Bengal as part of ongoing deportation proceedings against foreign nationals allegedly staying in India without valid documents.

The group was detained from areas falling under 10 police stations across Bengaluru during the city's ongoing verification drive, known as Operation Mukta. The individuals were transported by train from Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) and escorted by a team of 20 police personnel. 

The group reached Malda and was handed over to authorities at the Karma Tirtha Holding Centre for further procedures related to deportation, Bengaluru Police said. The individuals will be processed in coordination with West Bengal authorities before the next stage of repatriation to Bangladesh. 

31 people moved to Malda holding centre

The transfer is part of the administrative and legal process preceding deportation. The move to Malda does not itself mean that the individuals have already been returned to Bangladesh.

Authorities are expected to complete the required verification and other formalities before the group is handed over through the prescribed mechanism for repatriation.

West Bengal authorities received the group after it arrived at Malda Town railway station and subsequently took them to the designated holding facility in English Bazar. Officials are expected to verify identities and complete the relevant procedures before any formal deportation. 

Action follows Operation Mukta

The Bengaluru Police action comes amid an intensified drive to identify foreign nationals allegedly residing in the city without valid immigration documents.

Under Operation Mukta, police teams have conducted verification exercises across Bengaluru. Earlier reporting said the operation resulted in 105 Bangladeshi nationals being identified during the wider exercise, with their cases being processed by the competent authorities. 

In the Electronic City division, police had earlier carried out extensive document verification involving 1,909 people. Officials said those requiring further scrutiny were referred to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for appropriate action. 

Police have maintained that deportation proceedings require verification and coordination with the relevant central and state authorities.

Police appeal against vigilantism

Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh has appealed to residents to provide information about suspected undocumented foreign nationals to the police.

At the same time, police have cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands or harassing people on the basis of suspicion.

The latest transfer of the 31 individuals is therefore another step in Bengaluru's broader verification and deportation process, while the cases of other people identified during the operation remain subject to individual verification and further legal proceedings.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak has praised the state police following an encounter in which those accused of killing singer Ankit Baliyan were reportedly killed, saying the action sends a strong message to criminal elements in the state.

Reacting to the police operation, Pathak said the morale of criminals had been shattered and asserted that the government would continue to take firm action against those involved in serious crimes. His remarks came after the police action against the alleged killers of Baliyan.

Tension escalated in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur after a dispute over an alleged anti-Hindu remark led to stone-pelting, vandalism and clashes between two groups late Friday night. Several vehicles, houses and shops were damaged during the violence, while police used lathi-charge and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

A police officer was among those injured in the stone-pelting. Tarbahar police station in-charge Ravi Tiwari suffered a head injury, while a constable and several others were also reported injured. Senior officials, including Bilaspur Collector Sanjay Agrawal and SSP Rajnesh Singh, reached the area wearing helmets as the situation remained tense.

The incident took place in the City Kotwali police station area, particularly around Khaparganj. Additional police personnel were called in from neighbouring Janjgir-Champa and Mungeli districts, along with personnel from the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF).

Dispute Over Social Media Comment

The trouble reportedly began after a purported anti-Hindu comment circulated on social media. Members of a Hindu organisation subsequently reached the Khaparganj area, where an altercation reportedly took place between two groups.

The confrontation soon escalated, with both sides allegedly engaging in stone-pelting. Witnesses claimed that a large number of people had gathered in the area and that the situation became increasingly difficult for the police to control.

According to eyewitness accounts cited in the report, information about the gathering and the developing dispute had been communicated to senior police officials. A patrolling team was initially sent to the spot.

Police Officials Targeted

As the situation deteriorated, police personnel attempted to separate the two sides and restore order. However, the crowd became increasingly aggressive.

CSP Gagan Kumar, who had reportedly reached the area in civilian clothes, was allegedly pushed and involved in a scuffle during the confrontation. Tarbahar TI Ravi Tiwari sustained a head injury after being hit during the stone-pelting.

A constable and several other people were also reported to have suffered injuries.

Lathi-Charge, Tear Gas Used

Police first attempted to calm the situation through dialogue near City Kotwali Chowk. When stone-pelting continued, officers resorted to a lathi-charge and used tear-gas shells to disperse the crowd.

The report states that when the tear-gas firing equipment was not readily available, Sarkanda TI Pradeep Arya manually threw several shells. Around five to six tear-gas shells were reportedly used, but the crowd did not immediately disperse.

Crowd Enters Police Station

The situation became more tense when members of the crowd entered the City Kotwali police station premises and allegedly created a disturbance.

People inside the station demanded strict action against those accused of stone-pelting. Collector Sanjay Agrawal and SSP Rajnesh Singh remained inside the police station and attempted to pacify those gathered.

Additional police forces were subsequently mobilised from the district police line, along with station house officers, inspectors and personnel from neighbouring districts.

Senior Officials Lead March

As the crowd continued to gather, SSP Rajnesh Singh reportedly came out onto the road with police personnel to push back the gathering. Police also carried out a lathi-charge after the surrounding area was darkened by switching off the electricity supply.

Later, the Collector and SSP, wearing helmets, conducted a foot patrol in the affected area. Police teams continued patrolling the locality into the early hours to disperse crowds and prevent further escalation.

Heavy Police Deployment

Following the clashes, a significant police deployment was maintained around Masanganj, Khaparganj and City Kotwali Chowk. Barricades were placed around sensitive locations, while additional personnel continued patrolling the area.

Police appealed to residents to maintain peace as authorities worked to prevent further clashes.

Administration Promises Action

Collector Sanjay Agrawal and SSP Rajnesh Singh said the situation had developed following a personal dispute that later escalated into tension between two groups.

The officials said stone-pelting occurred from both sides and several people sustained injuries. More than 400 police personnel were deployed in the area, with additional forces brought in from neighbouring districts.

The administration said the situation was under control and assured that strict action would be taken against those found responsible after the investigation.

Two young men have died in separate knife attacks in Raipur's DD Nagar police station area within 24 hours, with both incidents reportedly following minor disputes. Police have registered cases in both incidents and arrested five people, including two juveniles, in one of the cases. The incidents have also triggered criticism from Congress leader Kanhaiya Agrawal, who questioned the city's law-and-order situation.

The first incident took place near the Ganesh Temple on Mahadev Ghat Road. According to police, 20-year-old Kailash Nishad, a resident of Nishadpara in Raipura, was returning home on foot with a female friend when he was allegedly stopped by Tikendra Dewangan, 20, from Changorabhatha. Police said Tikendra attacked Kailash with a knife.

Kailash was injured in the assault and, according to the initial account, managed to take the knife from Tikendra and used it to attack him. Tikendra sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where he later died during treatment. Kailash was shifted to AIIMS Raipur for treatment. Police have registered a murder case and are investigating the circumstances that led to the confrontation.

Second attack ends in death

The second incident occurred at around 12:30 am on August 23 in Shriram Nagar, Changorabhatha. Twenty-year-old Bhola Vishwakarma reportedly got into an argument with some local youths.

The dispute escalated and the accused allegedly attacked Bhola with knives. He was taken to Mekahara Hospital in critical condition, but died during treatment.

Police acted swiftly in the case and arrested five accused, including two juveniles. Teams have also been deployed to locate any other suspects who may have fled after the incident.

Police investigate both cases

Cases have been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections relating to murder and rioting, according to the information provided.

Investigators are examining the circumstances behind both attacks and the individual roles of those involved. Police officials are expected to provide further details after the preliminary investigation.

Following the two incidents, police patrolling has also been intensified in the area. Authorities are assessing whether additional security measures are required at locations considered vulnerable to street violence.

Congress raises law-and-order concerns

The incidents have drawn a political response from Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Kanhaiya Agrawal. Expressing concern over the deaths, Agrawal criticised the state government's handling of law and order and claimed that criminals were no longer afraid of the police.

He called on Home Minister Vijay Sharma and the police administration to ensure that all accused in the two cases are arrested and face strict legal action.

Agrawal also alleged that illegal drug and betting activities were contributing to crime in the city and demanded immediate action against such activities.

Demand for stronger patrolling

The Congress leader called for intensified police patrolling not only in the DD Nagar area but across Raipur. He said stronger police presence was needed to prevent similar incidents and restore public confidence.

Agrawal also warned that if rising crime and alleged illegal drug and betting activities were not brought under control, the Congress would launch a protest with local residents.

The police investigation into both knife attacks is continuing, while authorities are working to establish the precise circumstances and sequence of events in each case.

Tension flared in Chhattisgarh's capital on Wednesday after members of the Bajrang Dal staged a protest over an alleged objectionable social media post targeting Goddess Sita and Hindu saints. The organisation demanded strict legal action against the person behind the post, prompting police to register an FIR and initiate an investigation.

The protest took place at the Civil Lines police station, where Bajrang Dal activists raised slogans and submitted a memorandum seeking immediate action against the accused.

Protest Over Alleged Offensive Post

According to Bajrang Dal leaders, an Instagram account identified as "_wasim_ahmed_1" allegedly shared content containing objectionable remarks about Goddess Sita and Hindu religious figures. The organisation claimed that the account belongs to a resident of the Raja Talab area in Raipur.

Police, however, said they are yet to verify whether the account is actually operated by the individual named in the complaint.

Activists alleged that the post hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindu community and demanded that criminal proceedings be initiated without delay.

Police Register FIR

Following the complaint, Civil Lines police registered a case and launched an investigation into the matter.

Officials said digital evidence, including the Instagram account, the disputed post and related online activity, is being examined to establish the identity of the account holder and determine whether any offences under relevant provisions of law have been committed.

Police have not yet confirmed the authenticity of the social media account or the allegations against the person named by the complainants.

Warning of Larger Agitation

During the protest, Bajrang Dal workers warned that if prompt action was not taken, the organisation would intensify its agitation.

Chhattisgarh Bajrang Dal state co-convenor Vijendra Verma alleged that repeated attempts were being made to target Hindu beliefs through social media platforms. He urged authorities to take strict legal action against those responsible.

The organisation has also sought a detailed investigation into the origin of the post and the identity of the person operating the account.

Investigation Underway

Police said the case remains under investigation and that technical verification of the digital evidence is in progress. Authorities will examine the social media account, its activity, and other electronic records before taking further legal action.

Officials have appealed to the public not to circulate unverified content related to the case while the investigation is ongoing.

The incident comes amid growing scrutiny of objectionable content shared on social media platforms and renewed calls for stronger action against posts that allegedly incite communal or religious tensions.

Semaria Police in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district have arrested four persons for allegedly transporting and supplying prohibited narcotic medicines. During the operation, police seized 1,680 banned capsules, 20 bottles of cough syrup suspected to contain narcotic substances, and a scooter allegedly used in the crime.

The total value of the seized contraband and vehicle has been estimated at around ₹1.03 lakh. A case has been registered against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and all four have been produced before a local court.

Action Based on Informer Input

According to police, the operation was carried out following specific intelligence that four individuals were travelling on a black scooter bearing registration number MP-17-SA-8292 to deliver prohibited narcotic medicines at different locations.

Acting on the information, the Semaria police team laid a trap near Bhathiya on the Bhamra–Kushwar road. As police attempted to intercept the vehicle, the suspects allegedly tried to flee but were chased and apprehended.

Four Suspects Identified

During questioning, the accused were identified as:

• Raj Singh (21), a resident of Duwari village under Chorhata police station.

• Umesh Singh (34), a resident of Kushwar village under Semaria police station.

• Ankit Singh (27), also from Kushwar village.

• Pawan Rawat (26), a resident of Ward No. 14, Semaria town.

Contraband Recovered During Search

Police said a blue bag carried by the accused contained 210 strips comprising 1,680 prohibited Pywon Spas Plus capsules along with 20 bottles of Onrex cough syrup.

The accused were asked to produce valid documents authorising possession and transportation of the medicines but allegedly failed to provide any legal documentation.

Seizure Worth Over ₹1 Lakh

Police seized the recovered capsules valued at approximately ₹15,588, cough syrup worth around ₹8,000, and the scooter valued at nearly ₹80,000.

The combined value of the seized items has been estimated at about ₹1.03 lakh.

NDPS Case Registered

Following the recovery, police registered an FIR under the provisions of the NDPS Act and formally arrested all four accused.

Authorities said the accused were informed of the legal proceedings, their families were notified about the arrests, and they were subsequently produced before the competent court.

Drive Against Drug Trade to Continue

Semaria Station House Officer Shiva Agrawal said the operation was conducted based on reliable intelligence and resulted in the seizure of prohibited narcotic medicines along with the vehicle used for transportation.

He added that the police will continue intensive action against the illegal sale and trafficking of narcotic substances to curb drug-related crimes in the region.

Raipur Police have cracked a daylight robbery case in the Gudhiyari police station area within hours of the incident, arresting the alleged mastermind while continuing searches for three other accused who remain on the run.

The arrested accused has been identified as Kanwar Bagh, who is alleged to have planned and executed the robbery along with his associates. Police said raids are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects and recover the looted cash.

Victim Assaulted Before Robbery

According to police, complainant Ajit Nadar lodged a report at Ramnagar police outpost stating that on July 30, around 6:30 pm, his son had left home to go to a nearby shop. When he reached Gopal Nagar, Kanwar Bagh, a local resident, allegedly intercepted him along with three accomplices.

The accused reportedly abused the victim, threatened him with dire consequences, assaulted him and fled after snatching the cash he was carrying.

Based on the complaint, Gudhiyari Police registered a case under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation.

Special Team Formed

Taking the incident seriously, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Zone) Deepmala Kashyap directed officers to ensure the immediate arrest of those involved.

Following the instructions, Additional DCP Aditya Pandey, Assistant Commissioner of Police Poornima Lama, Ramnagar Outpost In-charge and the Anti-Crime and Cyber Unit (ACCU) constituted a special investigation team to trace the accused.

Mastermind Identified Through Technical Evidence

Police examined eyewitness accounts, questioned the victim and analysed technical evidence along with information gathered through local intelligence.

The investigation led officers to Kanwar Bagh, who was taken into custody shortly after the incident.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to committing the robbery with three associates.

Search On For Remaining Accused

Police said the identities of the remaining three accused have been established, and multiple teams are conducting raids to arrest them.

Officials added that efforts are also underway to recover the stolen cash and any other evidence linked to the robbery.

Further investigation into the case is in progress.

 Katni City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Neha Pachisiya is facing multiple departmental inquiries after allegations of illegal cash collection from a transporter and procedural negligence in a murder case surfaced. Following the complaints, the district police administration has withdrawn her supervisory charge over three police stations and initiated an internal investigation.

The action comes after a transporter accused the police officer of demanding money during a vehicle checking operation, while separate allegations relating to delays in a murder investigation have also emerged.

Transporter Alleges Illegal Cash Demand

According to a written complaint submitted to Katni Superintendent of Police Abhinay Vishwakarma on July 22, transporter Mahendra Jain alleged that during a vehicle inspection conducted on the night of July 21, his dumper truck was stopped and a demand of ₹30,000 was allegedly made.

The complainant claimed that ₹25,000 was paid in cash at the spot, while the remaining ₹5,000 was allegedly sought through the vehicle driver the following day. He further alleged that action against the vehicle was threatened if the amount was not paid.

The transporter has requested a fair investigation while submitting supporting material along with his complaint.

Police Administration Takes Immediate Action

Following the complaint, SP Abhinay Vishwakarma ordered a preliminary inquiry into the matter.

As part of the initial administrative action, Constable Keshav Singh, who was serving as the CSP's driver, has been suspended pending investigation.

The district police administration has also reassigned the supervisory responsibility of Kuthla, Madhavnagar and Ranganath Nagar police stations, which were earlier under CSP Neha Pachisiya. Their charge has now been handed over to AJAK DSP Shiva Pathak.

Separate Probe in Murder Investigation

Apart from the extortion allegations, CSP Pachisiya is also facing scrutiny over alleged procedural lapses in a murder investigation.

According to reports, the charge sheet in a murder case was not filed within the statutory period of 90 days, reportedly resulting in the accused obtaining default bail from the court.

In another development linked to the same case, an accused has reportedly filed a complaint before the court alleging irregularities involving the transfer of his property. These allegations are also under examination as part of the ongoing departmental process.

Additional SP Assigned to Conduct Inquiry

Considering the seriousness of the allegations, senior police authorities have entrusted the investigation to Additional Superintendent of Police Anu Beniwal of Jabalpur.

Police officials stated that statements of the complainant have been recorded and documentary evidence is being examined. Authorities said further departmental or legal action, if any, will depend on the findings of the inquiry.

At present, no official conclusion has been reached regarding the allegations.

Rewa city is grappling with a significant shortage of police personnel, with only 234 officers and staff deployed across its seven major police stations despite increasing population, expanding urban limits, and growing law-and-order responsibilities.

According to official figures, the city's Kotwali, Civil Lines, Chorhata, University, Saman, Bichhiya, and Amahiya police stations are operating with limited manpower, forcing the existing force to manage crime control, law-and-order duties, VIP security, traffic management, investigations, and public events simultaneously.

Civil Lines Has Highest Strength

Among the seven police stations, Civil Lines Police Station has the largest deployment with 44 personnel, followed by:

• Kotwali – 40 personnel

• Chorhata – 36 personnel

• Saman – 36 personnel

• Bichhiya – 30 personnel

• University – 25 personnel

• Amahiya – 23 personnel

Despite these deployments, officials acknowledge that the available strength remains inadequate considering the city's growing policing requirements.

Limited Officers Handling Multiple Responsibilities

The staffing pattern further highlights the shortage. Across all seven police stations, there are only:

• 6 Station House Officers (SHOs)

• 16 Sub-Inspectors (SIs)

• 18 Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs)

These 234 personnel are responsible for maintaining law and order across the entire urban area.

With only 234 police personnel currently responsible for securing Rewa's urban limits, concerns continue to grow over whether the existing force can effectively meet the city's evolving law-and-order challenges.

 A Youth Congress leader in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district has alleged that unidentified persons attempted to kill him by trying to run him over with a speeding Bolero SUV in the Mangawan police station area. Police have registered the complaint and initiated an investigation into the incident.

Prakash Tiwari, President of the Mangawan Assembly Youth Congress, submitted a written complaint at Mangawan Police Station late on Wednesday night, claiming that the attack was premeditated and linked to his activism against alleged illegal activities in the region.

Leader Alleges Deliberate Attack

According to Tiwari, the incident occurred while he was returning home when a Bolero vehicle, allegedly fitted with black window films and without a registration number plate, approached him at high speed.

He alleged that the driver deliberately attempted to hit him with the intention of causing fatal injuries. Tiwari said he managed to escape in time, preventing what he described as a serious attack on his life.

He claimed he could not identify the occupants of the vehicle but believes the incident was planned.

Links Incident to Complaints Against Illegal Activities

In his complaint, Tiwari said he has been actively raising public issues in the constituency and has repeatedly lodged complaints against alleged illegal liquor trade, corruption, and other unlawful activities.

He further claimed that police had previously conducted raids and seized illegal liquor based on complaints submitted by him. According to Tiwari, those actions had led to disputes with certain individuals, which he believes may be connected to the alleged attack.

Supporters Accompany Leader to Police Station

Following the incident, Tiwari, accompanied by his supporters, reached Mangawan Police Station and demanded a fair investigation.

He urged police to identify those involved, take strict legal action against the accused, and ensure his personal security in view of the alleged threat to his life.

Police Begin Investigation

Mangawan Station House Officer Pushpendra Mishra confirmed that the police have received the complaint and initiated an inquiry into the matter.

He said the allegations are being examined from all angles and that further legal action will be taken based on evidence gathered during the investigation.

Police have not yet confirmed the identity of the alleged vehicle or its occupants. Officials said the facts surrounding the incident will become clear only after the investigation is completed.
