Police Baton-Charge Tribal Protesters in Khargone; Over 100 Demand Compensation for Injured Youth, Five Detained

Police baton-charged tribal protesters in Khargone on Saturday afternoon after a road blockade on the Chittorgarh–Bhusawal Highway escalated, leaving several people injured and at least five taken into custody. The protesters, numbering over 100, were demanding compensation and medical expenses for a youth from their community who was seriously injured in a road accident 15 days ago.

According to officials, the protest began around 4 pm when members of the tribal community blocked traffic on the highway, bringing vehicular movement to a complete halt for nearly 45 minutes. Protesters demanded ₹15 lakh in compensation and reimbursement of medical costs, alleging that neither relief nor action had been taken despite repeated representations.

Videos circulating on social media show policemen using batons to disperse the crowd and pushing detained youths into police vehicles. Protesters alleged excessive use of force, claiming they were beaten and manhandled while being detained.

Triggering incident

The agitation stemmed from an accident that occurred about two weeks earlier, when a vehicle allegedly linked to a liquor contractor hit a youth from the tribal community. The victim sustained serious injuries and remains under treatment, incurring significant medical expenses. Family members and villagers allege that no compensation was paid and no decisive action was initiated against those responsible, prompting the protest.

Situation turns tense

As the blockade continued, tensions rose at the site. Police said an agitated group attempted to stone a passenger bus, heightening concerns of violence. Protesters also moved towards a government liquor shop, where family members accused the contractor’s staff of causing the accident and attempted to pelt stones, officials said.

Police response

Upon receiving information, Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Rohit Lakhare and Kotwali police station in-charge BL Mandloi reached the spot with additional force. Police officials said they initially tried to persuade protesters to clear the highway and restore traffic. When the situation deteriorated, they used “mild force” in accordance with protocol to disperse the crowd and prevent damage to public property.

Deputy Collector Anil Jain was also present during the operation. Police confirmed that four to five people were detained for questioning and to restore order. Traffic was resumed after the blockade was lifted.

Aftermath

By evening, the situation was reported to be under control. However, the incident has drawn criticism from rights groups and local leaders, who have sought an inquiry into the police action and renewed demands for compensation to the injured youth.

Authorities said discussions with community representatives would continue to address grievances and prevent further unrest.
