Prime Minister Narendra Modi intensified his political attack on the ruling party in West Bengal during a massive public rally in Siliguri on Sunday. Addressing a large gathering, he accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of misusing public funds and prioritizing vote bank politics over development.

Modi alleged that the TMC government had allocated nearly ₹6000 crore for madrasas while neglecting broader development initiatives in the state. He asserted that the people of West Bengal have witnessed deterioration during the party’s tenure and insisted that the ruling leadership must now provide a detailed account of its 15-year governance.

Siliguri Rally Marks Strategic Push in North Bengal

The Prime Minister’s visit marked the second day of his West Bengal tour, with Siliguri emerging as a key political battleground. He appealed to voters to support Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates across Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts, emphasizing the importance of North Bengal in shaping the state’s political future.

Modi highlighted the overwhelming public response to his recent roadshow, stating that the enthusiasm of the people reflects a strong desire for change. He claimed that the Siliguri rally would unsettle the TMC leadership and signal a shift in voter sentiment.

Focus on CAA and Allegations of Infiltration

During his speech, Modi also referenced the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), reiterating that his government has ensured voting rights and security for eligible citizens. Using strong political messaging, he raised concerns over infiltration and urged voters to support BJP’s vision for a secure and developed Bengal.

He criticized the TMC government for what he described as a culture of fear, alleging political violence and intimidation in the region. According to him, such an environment has hindered progress and affected the daily lives of citizens.

Concerns Over Tea Industry and Regional Development

North Bengal, particularly Darjeeling, is known for its tea plantations. Modi expressed concern over the condition of tea gardens, accusing the state government of neglecting the sector. He contrasted this with developments in neighboring Assam, where he said BJP-led governance has improved the welfare of tea garden workers by focusing on education, healthcare, and land rights.

He assured that similar initiatives would be implemented in West Bengal if the BJP comes to power, including land ownership rights for workers and improved social infrastructure.

Political Landscape in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri

Darjeeling district currently remains a BJP stronghold, with the party holding all five assembly seats. The region has a diverse demographic composition, with significant Hindu and Buddhist populations, and local politics often revolves around Gorkha identity issues.

In contrast, Jalpaiguri presents a more competitive scenario, with TMC and BJP sharing influence across its seven constituencies. Communities such as Rajbanshis and Scheduled Tribes play a decisive role in electoral outcomes, making the region crucial for both parties.

Opposition Hits Back with Strong Statements

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responded sharply to BJP’s allegations. She claimed that the BJP is attempting to destabilize the state government through financial inducements and political pressure. In a strong remark, she described the BJP as more dangerous than a poisonous snake, intensifying the political rhetoric ahead of elections.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, campaigning in East Midnapore, praised Bengal’s historical and cultural significance, calling it a land that has guided India’s spiritual and ideological direction.

Following the rally, Modi shared a video on social media platform X, writing in Bengali to connect with local audiences. He highlighted the enthusiasm of supporters and described the public response as extraordinary, further reinforcing BJP’s outreach efforts in the state.
