A calf hit a gas cylinder in Rewa, causing a leak that led to a massive fire. Four people, including two children, were severely burned as their house was destroyed.

Two children among the injured as flames from a traditional stove ignite accumulated gas in Paipkhara area.

A late-night fire in the Paipkhara area has left four members of a family, including two young children, with severe burn injuries after a calf accidentally knocked over a gas cylinder connection, causing a major leak.

The incident, which took place late Tuesday evening, completely gutted the house belonging to Yashodanand Shukla. According to initial reports from local authorities, the family was sitting in the courtyard having their dinner when the accident occurred inside an adjoining room.

How the Leak Happened

Officials said a calf had been tied up inside the same room where the household LPG cylinder was kept. Preliminary investigation suggests the cylinder’s regulator was left open, and when the calf moved and bumped into the setup, the connecting pipe came off. This led to a rapid, unchecked build-up of cooking gas inside the confined space.

The family, unaware of the leak, continued with their evening routine.

Family Unaware Until Too Late

As the gas spread from the room into the open courtyard, it came into contact with the flame of a traditional chulha (mud stove) where food was being prepared. Sources familiar with the matter said the fire flashed over almost instantly.

"Within seconds, the flames turned severe. The entire house was engulfed," a neighbour recalled, adding that by the time people rushed out, the situation was already out of control. The four victims have been identified as Yashodanand Shukla, Indrakali Shukla, and two children, Ayushman and Divyansh. All of them sustained serious burns and were rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital by locals and police personnel.

Police Investigation Underway

CSP Ritu Upadhyay confirmed that a preliminary inquiry points to the gas leak as the primary cause of the blaze. “The fire spread with such intensity that the family, seated in the courtyard, barely had any time to react or escape,” an official statement noted.

Local authorities have registered the case and are investigating the exact sequence of events. No formal negligence has been established yet, but officials have begun appealing to residents in the area to exercise greater caution when handling LPG cylinders.

Ground-Level Impact

The fire not only caused severe physical injuries but also destroyed almost all household belongings. Neighbours made frantic efforts to douse the flames with buckets of water and blankets, but the fire had already consumed most of the structure by the time fire tenders arrived.

The condition of the two children is said to be critical, though hospital authorities have not yet released an official bulletin.

Appeal for Safety Awareness

Following the incident, local police have urged residents to ensure regulators are turned off when the cylinder is not in use and to keep animals or children away from LPG connections. This is the second such fire-related accident reported in the Rewa district this month, raising fresh concerns about household safety practices. Officials say a detailed report will be submitted to the district administration by Friday.

Rewa Police Line Brawl: Cops Clash With Swords, Head Constable Hurt

A violent fight broke out inside Rewa police line late Monday night as personnel used swords and sticks against a colleague. The injured head constable is undergoing treatment.

A late-night dispute inside the Rewa police line took an alarming turn on Monday when personnel allegedly attacked a colleague using swords, sticks, and traditional sickles. The incident has raised serious questions about discipline within the force, with locals asking who will guard the guardians.

The injured officer, identified as head constable Mukesh Tiwari, posted at the Mangawan police station, is currently undergoing treatment at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. According to initial reports, the confrontation began shortly after Tiwari returned home within the police line quarters.

Argument Escalates Into Attack

Sources familiar with the matter said Tiwari got into a heated exchange with Surendra Pandey, a local police employee known by the nickname “Mama.” What started as a verbal disagreement quickly spiralled out of control.

Pandey, along with his son and a few associates, allegedly arrived with weapons and attacked Tiwari. Family members who tried to intervene were also reportedly not spared. “There was shouting and chaos. For a moment, it was hard to believe this was happening inside a police line,” said a resident of the quarters who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Battles and Fears Over Safety

The Rewa police line complex, meant to house disciplined personnel, turned into what witnesses described as a scene from an action film. The use of swords and traditional sickles—commonly called garasa in the region—shocked onlookers.

“If those in uniform start settling scores with weapons inside their own quarters, what hope does an ordinary citizen have?” asked a local shopkeeper near the police line. The incident has sparked unease among residents of the area, who rely on the same police force for their daily security.

Wife Alleges Pattern of Misconduct

In a complaint that has added to the controversy, the injured head constable’s wife has accused Surendra Pandey of being a habitual troublemaker inside the police line. She alleged that Pandey, often referred to as “Mama,” has become synonymous with intimidation, substance use, and frequent ruckus inside the complex.

“Abuse and chaos have become routine here. Discipline has taken a backseat,” she was quoted as saying by local reporters. Her allegations point to a deeper rot within the police line’s internal environment, suggesting that the Monday night attack was not an isolated outburst.

Official Response and Public Outcry

Senior police officials have acknowledged the incident. A statement issued late Monday night said an internal inquiry has been ordered. “Strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty, regardless of their position,” an officer told reporters. However, no arrests were reported until late evening.

For the public, the explanation felt insufficient. Many took to social media and local platforms to question how an armed clash could occur inside a police facility without immediate intervention. “This is not a police line. It looks more like a wrestling arena,” a local resident commented.

The injured Tiwari remains under observation. His condition was described as stable but serious late Monday night. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any weapons have been seized or if Surendra Pandey has been detained. Further updates are expected as the inquiry progresses.

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to the principal of Thakur Ranmat Singh College in Rewa, highlighting grievances over non-generation of Sambhal Yojana card codes and pending scholarships. The action came after several students pursuing BBA and BCA courses complained they were being forced to pay over ₹25,000 in lump sum fees.

Sambhal Card Code Trouble

District president Pankaj Upadhyay, who led the delegation, said the absence of Sambhal card codes is making it impossible for students to avail fee waivers in instalments. “Without a generated code, the system pushes them to pay the full amount at once. Most of our students come from middle-class and farming backgrounds. This kind of upfront payment is unaffordable,” he told reporters outside the principal’s office.

Majority of the affected students are enrolled in professional courses that fall under the state’s Sambhal Yojana, designed to provide financial support to eligible categories. However, college authorities have reportedly not processed the codes on time, leaving students with no option but to pay the full annual fee.

Scholarship Delays Add to Crisis

The NSUI has also accused the college administration of collecting full fees under the assurance that scholarships would be reimbursed later. Upadhyay claimed that several students have not received their scholarship amounts for the past two academic years.

“They take the money upfront, and then keep saying the refund will come after the session ends. But years have passed, and families are still waiting. It’s a vicious cycle,” he said.

Local sources indicate that around 200 students across the BBA and BCA programmes are currently stuck in this limbo. With no clarity from the college or the state’s scholarship portal, many have had to borrow money or sell household assets to meet admission deadlines.

What the College Says

Principal of TRS College was not available for an on-record comment by the time this report was filed. However, a junior administrative staff member said, “The principal has received the memorandum. We are looking into the technical issues on the Sambhal portal. Scholarships are released by the state government, not the college.”

NSUI leaders rejected this explanation, pointing out that colleges are responsible for timely verification and code generation. They demanded that the principal issue a clear timeline for resolving both issues.

Three-Day Ultimatum

Upadhyay issued a stern warning: if no action is taken within three days, the union will launch an aggressive agitation in the interest of students. “We are not here to create trouble. But forced payment of ₹25,000 when the government clearly has a waiver scheme — that’s not acceptable,” he said.

The protest comes at a time when colleges across Madhya Pradesh are wrapping up admissions for the current semester. Education department officials have previously directed institutions to ensure no eligible student is denied benefits under Sambhal Yojana, but ground-level implementation remains patchy.

District administration sources said they have taken note of the issue. A meeting between college officials and NSUI representatives is expected within the next 48 hours. Meanwhile, students have been advised to keep their documentation ready for verification in case a fresh drive for Sambhal card codes is announced.

Vice-president Satyam Mishra, Rewa assembly president Sanskar Tripathi, district secretary Ajay Singh, and university unit president Vishu Vardhan Singh were among those present during the memorandum submission.
