Heavy Rain Lashes 40+ MP Districts; Two Children Drown in Ashta, Floods Disrupt Roads

Heavy monsoon rainfall affected over 40 districts in Madhya Pradesh, causing floods, road closures and two children's deaths in Ashta. IMD has issued heavy rain alerts for several districts.

Heavy monsoon showers continued to lash Madhya Pradesh over the past 24 hours, affecting more than 40 districts and triggering flood-like conditions in several regions. Rising river levels, waterlogging, damaged connectivity and rain-related fatalities have disrupted normal life, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued heavy rainfall in several parts of the state.

According to the IMD, Indore recorded more than 2.5 inches of rainfall during the past 24 hours, while Mandla received 2.2 inches and Khandwa nearly 1.75 inches. Bhopal witnessed around 1.5 inches of rain, with Datia, Naugaon and Balaghat receiving over an inch. Moderate to heavy rainfall was also reported from Ratlam, Betul, Dhar, Khargone, Pachmarhi, Damoh, Narmadapuram, Jabalpur and several other districts.

The relentless rainfall has caused rivers and streams to swell, cutting off road connectivity to several villages. Water has entered residential areas and agricultural fields in multiple districts, while overflowing bridges and culverts have forced authorities to suspend traffic on several routes.

In Sehore district's Ashta region, two children lost their lives after drowning in a pond at Bapcha Doniya village. Three other children were rescued safely. The victims were rushed to the Civil Hospital in Ashta, where doctors declared them dead. Police have initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Harda district has also witnessed severe disruption due to heavy rainfall. The Kalimachak River overflowed near Mandla village, with water flowing nearly three feet above a bridge, forcing the closure of the Narmadapuram–Khandwa State Highway. Several villages have been cut off from the district headquarters as authorities continue to monitor the situation.

In Khandwa district, incessant rainfall led to flooding in the Garbadi stream near Killod block, bringing traffic on the Khirkiya route to a complete halt. Long queues of vehicles were reported on both sides of the submerged crossing. The administration has urged residents not to attempt crossing flooded roads or streams until water levels recede.

Flood conditions have also intensified in Sehore district, where the Parvati, Papnas and Nevaj rivers are flowing above normal levels. Water has entered homes in several villages, including Khachrod, Mehtwada, Maina, Kothri, Bhanwara, Bagair, Singarchori, Harajkhedi, Dhakni and Mugli. Farmers have reported damage to soybean crops after floodwaters inundated agricultural fields.

Authorities have closed several bridges and vulnerable routes as a precaution. Police personnel have been deployed near flooded crossings to prevent people from entering dangerous areas.

The impact of the monsoon has been visible across the state. In Ujjain, the body of a gram panchayat assistant secretary, who was swept away while attempting to cross a flooded culvert earlier this week, was recovered from the Chambal River after an extensive search operation. Temples along the Shipra River also remained partially submerged due to the rising water level.

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in 19 districts, including Indore and Ujjain, over the next 24 hours. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert, avoid crossing flooded roads and water bodies, and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Disaster management teams and district administrations continue to monitor river levels and weather conditions as the active monsoon spell is expected to persist across Madhya Pradesh in the coming days.

Harda Road Accident: Mother, Son Killed Days Before Wedding

Harda Road Accident Claims Mother and Son Days Before His Wedding

A tractor-trolley collision on a Harda district highway turned a family's wedding preparations into mourning overnight, killing a 21-year-old groom-to-be and his mother while critically injuring their young nephew.

Returning From Wedding Shopping

A young man barely four days away from his wedding and his mother never made it home from a routine shopping trip to the market. Abhishek Keer, 21, a resident of village Unchan in Harda district of Madhya Pradesh, had gone to Harda town on Tuesday evening with his mother Narmadi Bai, 45, and his 12-year-old nephew Shubham Keer to purchase items for his upcoming wedding ceremony. The baraat — the groom's wedding procession — was scheduled to depart for village Gadrapur on April 19.

Collision Near Mangrul Naka

At around 8:15 pm on Tuesday night, the three were returning home on a motorcycle when tragedy struck near the forest department checkpost at Mangrul Naka, under Handia police station limits. A tractor-trolley, which had just offloaded pipes and was heading back towards Handia, collided head-on with their bike. The impact was severe. Both Abhishek and his mother Narmadi Bai suffered critical head injuries and were declared dead at the scene itself. Young Shubham sustained a serious nose injury in the crash.

Rushed to Hospital, Declared Dead

All three were rushed to the Community Health Centre in Handia where doctors confirmed that the mother and son had succumbed to their injuries. Shubham was initially admitted to the district hospital in Harda for treatment. According to medical staff, his condition warranted further care and he was subsequently referred to Bhopal for advanced treatment.

Wedding Rituals Were Days Away

The loss has devastated a family that was in the middle of festive preparations. According to Abhishek's elder brother Bhagwansingh Keer, the family had an entire schedule of pre-wedding events lined up. A mata pujan ceremony was planned for April 17, a mandap programme was set for April 18, and the baraat was to leave on April 19. Abhishek's engagement had taken place only recently, and the family was in full preparation mode. He was the younger of two brothers and also had three sisters. His father has been mentally unwell for several years and is also hearing-impaired, leaving Abhishek as a central support for the household.

Police Register Case, Probe Underway

Handia police have registered a marg (unnatural death) case and launched an investigation into the circumstances of the collision. As per reports, the tractor-trolley involved in the accident was travelling empty after completing a pipe delivery, when it hit the motorcycle. Authorities have taken cognisance of the incident and are examining details of the vehicle and its route.

Bodies Sent for Post-Mortem

The bodies of Abhishek and Narmadi Bai were kept in the mortuary of the district hospital overnight. Officials confirmed that the post-mortem was conducted on Wednesday morning, after which the remains were handed over to the family members. Sources indicated that a large number of villagers gathered at the hospital as news of the tragedy spread through the region.

Road Safety Concern Resurfaces

This accident comes amid a broader pattern of fatal tractor-trolley crashes on rural roads in Madhya Pradesh. In a separate incident the same night, a tractor-trolley carrying wedding guests in Rajgarh district overturned into a drain after colliding with a truck, killing three people and injuring fifteen others. Both incidents point to the persistent road safety risks on poorly lit rural highways, particularly during night hours. As per reports, authorities have been repeatedly urged to enforce stricter checks on overloaded or recklessly driven agricultural vehicles on state highways, though enforcement on rural routes remains inconsistent.

A family that was counting down days to a celebration is now counting its losses — and a community is once again asking how many more such tragedies the roads will claim before systemic action follows.
