A heartbreaking accident was reported from Rewa district in Madhya Pradesh after a minor girl drowned in the Belan River during a wedding ceremony in Padri village. The victim, identified as Ruchi Kumari, had come to her maternal grandparents’ house to attend a marriage function when the incident took place on Thursday afternoon. The tragedy has shocked the entire village and turned what was meant to be a joyful celebration into a scene of grief and mourning.

According to local residents and police officials, the child was playing with other children near the wedding venue before they gradually moved towards the nearby Belan River. During the course of the play, Ruchi reportedly slipped near the riverbank and fell into deep water. Before nearby people could react, the strong flow and depth of the river pulled the child underwater.

Witnesses said children present at the spot raised an alarm immediately after seeing the girl disappear into the river. Hearing the cries for help, villagers and family members rushed towards the riverbank and began efforts to rescue her. Several local residents entered the water and searched for the child for a considerable amount of time. After continuous efforts, villagers managed to pull the girl out of the river. However, by the time she was brought to the shore, she was unconscious and showed no signs of movement. Family members attempted to revive her, but she had already died due to drowning, according to initial information shared by local authorities.

The incident caused panic and emotional scenes at the wedding venue. Relatives who had gathered to celebrate the marriage broke down after receiving news of the child’s death. Eyewitnesses said the atmosphere in the village changed completely within minutes, with cries and chaos replacing the festive celebrations. Local residents stated that Ruchi Kumari had arrived at her maternal grandparents’ house only recently to attend the wedding function along with other family members. She was reportedly spending time with cousins and children from the neighbourhood before the accident occurred.

Police officials from Chakghat police station reached the spot soon after receiving information about the drowning incident. Officers inspected the area and took the body into custody for legal formalities. A panchnama was conducted at the site before the body was sent to the civil hospital for post-mortem examination.

Officials said the investigation is currently underway and statements of family members and local witnesses are being recorded. Police are also examining the exact circumstances that led to the accident. The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding safety arrangements around rivers and water bodies in rural areas of Madhya Pradesh. Villagers claimed that the Belan River remains dangerous during several months of the year due to deep sections and slippery banks. According to residents, there are no warning signs, barricades or safety measures near the river despite repeated concerns raised by locals.

Some villagers alleged that children and visitors often reach the riverbank during social and family gatherings because of the open access to the area. They said the absence of security arrangements increases the risk of accidents, especially during crowded events such as weddings and festivals. Residents of Padri village demanded stronger safety measures near the river to prevent similar incidents in the future. They urged the local administration to install warning boards and fencing at vulnerable points along the riverbank. Some locals also suggested deploying safety personnel or creating awareness regarding water-related dangers in villages located close to rivers.

Police officials stated that further action would be taken after completion of the post-mortem process and inquiry. Authorities said all aspects related to the incident are being examined, though preliminary findings indicate it was an accidental drowning case. The death of the young girl has deeply affected the local community. Villagers gathered outside the family’s house after the incident to offer condolences and support to the grieving relatives. Many people described the incident as one of the most painful tragedies witnessed in the area in recent months.

Social workers and local residents said incidents involving children drowning in rivers and ponds continue to surface in rural regions due to lack of awareness and safety infrastructure. They stressed the need for increased monitoring of children during large family gatherings, especially in villages situated near water bodies. The tragic accident has also sparked discussion on the importance of emergency response systems in remote areas. Locals claimed that immediate rescue equipment or trained personnel were not available at the spot when the child fell into the river, forcing villagers to rely entirely on manual rescue efforts.

Meanwhile, police presence remained in the village for some time after the incident as authorities completed procedural work and interacted with family members. Officials appealed to residents to remain cautious near rivers and ensure children are not left unattended near deep water areas.

Bilaspur road accidents claim 4 lives, 29 injured as doctor’s car, wedding vehicles crash in tragic series.

Separate road mishaps rocked Bilaspur district in Chhattisgarh, leaving four people dead and 29 others injured over a short span. Initial reports point to drowsiness, overcrowding and speeding as key factors behind the chaos. Police have launched probes while hospitals scramble to treat the wounded.

Doctor’s Drowsy Collision

A doctor from Mahasamund lost control of his car near Lalkhadan overbridge after dozing off, slamming into an oncoming auto-rickshaw. The impact killed Beera Bai Dahariya (50), a labourer returning from Gujarat, on the spot. Auto driver and three other passengers suffered serious injuries, with the driver's legs fractured.

T Kendra Prasad Patel (29), a SIMS surgery resident heading back from home leave, tested negative for alcohol, said Torwa TI Rajnish Singh. Locals confronted him at the scene before police intervened, seizing the vehicle (CG 04 PA 3294) and filing an FIR.

Wedding Scorpio Overturns

In another blow, a Scorpio packed with wedding guests from Kota to Mungeli flipped near Nagchui village after the driver braked suddenly for a cyclist. Sushila Manikpuri from Ghoramar died, with 13 injured including Meleudas from Lamkena and Akhilesh from Sirgitti. Overloading emerged in early checks, police noted.

Bystanders pulled victims out and rushed them to Kotha health centre. Families gathered weeping outside as post-mortem got underway.

Pickup Flips on Sharp Turn

Baratis returning from a Seepat wedding in a overloaded pickup (CG 12 AX 9589) met disaster at Karma Busaha bend. Driver lost grip, vehicle rolled, killing Ram Jhul Singh (40) from Umaria Dadar instantly. Twelve others hurt, all admitted nearby.

The group, over 25 strong from Ratanpur’s Umaria Dadar, had attended late-night festivities. Takhatpur police are investigating.

Bike Rider Crushed by Car

Gautam Yadav (24) from Seepat Nyapara fell victim to a rash driver while biking his sister home post-wedding. A white car (CG 12 BP 5061) struck him near Raliya around 2 pm, mangling bike and vehicle fronts. He succumbed at Masturi CHC.

Brother Rajesh got the call from a stranger. Masturi police hunt the absconding driver.

Police Response, Hospital Strain

Cases span Torwa, Takhatpur, Seepat and Masturi stations. FIRs filed, vehicles impounded where possible. Breath tests cleared some drivers but probes continue into negligence.

Over 29 injured strain local facilities, some critical. Officials urge caution on busy routes.

Road Safety Echoes

These crashes highlight persistent risks on Bilaspur roads—fatigue after long drives, wedding-season overloading, sharp bends. Similar incidents plague Chhattisgarh highways lately. Authorities may step up checks ahead.

Harda Road Accident Claims Mother and Son Days Before His Wedding

A tractor-trolley collision on a Harda district highway turned a family's wedding preparations into mourning overnight, killing a 21-year-old groom-to-be and his mother while critically injuring their young nephew.

Returning From Wedding Shopping

A young man barely four days away from his wedding and his mother never made it home from a routine shopping trip to the market. Abhishek Keer, 21, a resident of village Unchan in Harda district of Madhya Pradesh, had gone to Harda town on Tuesday evening with his mother Narmadi Bai, 45, and his 12-year-old nephew Shubham Keer to purchase items for his upcoming wedding ceremony. The baraat — the groom's wedding procession — was scheduled to depart for village Gadrapur on April 19.

Collision Near Mangrul Naka

At around 8:15 pm on Tuesday night, the three were returning home on a motorcycle when tragedy struck near the forest department checkpost at Mangrul Naka, under Handia police station limits. A tractor-trolley, which had just offloaded pipes and was heading back towards Handia, collided head-on with their bike. The impact was severe. Both Abhishek and his mother Narmadi Bai suffered critical head injuries and were declared dead at the scene itself. Young Shubham sustained a serious nose injury in the crash.

Rushed to Hospital, Declared Dead

All three were rushed to the Community Health Centre in Handia where doctors confirmed that the mother and son had succumbed to their injuries. Shubham was initially admitted to the district hospital in Harda for treatment. According to medical staff, his condition warranted further care and he was subsequently referred to Bhopal for advanced treatment.

Wedding Rituals Were Days Away

The loss has devastated a family that was in the middle of festive preparations. According to Abhishek's elder brother Bhagwansingh Keer, the family had an entire schedule of pre-wedding events lined up. A mata pujan ceremony was planned for April 17, a mandap programme was set for April 18, and the baraat was to leave on April 19. Abhishek's engagement had taken place only recently, and the family was in full preparation mode. He was the younger of two brothers and also had three sisters. His father has been mentally unwell for several years and is also hearing-impaired, leaving Abhishek as a central support for the household.

Police Register Case, Probe Underway

Handia police have registered a marg (unnatural death) case and launched an investigation into the circumstances of the collision. As per reports, the tractor-trolley involved in the accident was travelling empty after completing a pipe delivery, when it hit the motorcycle. Authorities have taken cognisance of the incident and are examining details of the vehicle and its route.

Bodies Sent for Post-Mortem

The bodies of Abhishek and Narmadi Bai were kept in the mortuary of the district hospital overnight. Officials confirmed that the post-mortem was conducted on Wednesday morning, after which the remains were handed over to the family members. Sources indicated that a large number of villagers gathered at the hospital as news of the tragedy spread through the region.

Road Safety Concern Resurfaces

This accident comes amid a broader pattern of fatal tractor-trolley crashes on rural roads in Madhya Pradesh. In a separate incident the same night, a tractor-trolley carrying wedding guests in Rajgarh district overturned into a drain after colliding with a truck, killing three people and injuring fifteen others. Both incidents point to the persistent road safety risks on poorly lit rural highways, particularly during night hours. As per reports, authorities have been repeatedly urged to enforce stricter checks on overloaded or recklessly driven agricultural vehicles on state highways, though enforcement on rural routes remains inconsistent.

A family that was counting down days to a celebration is now counting its losses — and a community is once again asking how many more such tragedies the roads will claim before systemic action follows.
