Chhattisgarh Heatwave Alert: Bilaspur, Raipur and Durg on High Alert

Intense heatwave conditions are expected to move over parts of Chhattisgarh from Wednesday, with Bilaspur, Raipur and Durg divisions likely to see temperatures rise sharply.

Heatwave to hit central Chhattisgarh

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has signalled a fresh spell of heatwave‑like conditions over central and northern Chhattisgarh from 16 April 2026. Forecasts indicate that maximum temperatures in Bilaspur, Raipur and Durg divisions may climb by 3–4°C over the next four days, nudging the mercury beyond 42°C in several districts.

Residents are already feeling the impact, with Raipur recorded as the hottest district in the state over the past 24 hours, where the maximum temperature touched 41.2°C. Night temperatures have remained elevated, with the lowest reading of 17.9°C logged in Ambikapur, indicating little respite from daytime heat.

Dry spell to continue

Officials at the state‑level meteorology office told this portal that the weather over Chhattisgarh will remain dry in the coming 48 hours, with no significant rain or active weather system expected. The absence of cloud cover and moisture has allowed the sun to heat the surface steadily, creating ideal conditions for heatwave pockets to form.

As per the latest bulletin, peak afternoon temperatures in Raipur are projected to hover around 42–43°C on 15–16 April, while the minimum may settle near 26–27°C. Similar warming is expected in adjoining towns and tehsils of Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur, where the heat index will feel even higher due to low wind and humidity mix.

Heatwave like conditions in three divisions

The IMD has traced the warming trend to a persistent northwesterly flow of hot, dry air across central India. With no major low‑pressure or monsoon system nearby, the ridge of high pressure over the region is expected to anchor the heat for several days.

This pattern is likely to push the state into heatwave territory in isolated pockets of Bilaspur, Raipur and Durg divisions from 16 April onwards. The threshold for heatwave conditions in this region is a maximum temperature of 45°C or more, or at least 4.5°C–6.5°C above normal for the area.

Health and safety warnings issued

The Chhattisgarh state health department has advised people to avoid prolonged outdoor activity between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., the hottest part of the day. State officials have reiterated that it is not a full‑blown state‑wide heatwave alert yet, but local authorities in Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur have been asked to be on alert for any heat‑related emergencies.

“People, especially senior citizens and children, should drink adequate water, wear light‑coloured loose‑fitting clothes and avoid heavy exertion in the sun,” a senior health official told this English news portal. Hospitals and primary health centres in the affected districts have been told to keep emergency teams ready for cases of heatstroke and dehydration.

Impact on daily life and economy

The rising heat is already affecting daily routines across urban and semi‑urban clusters. Street vendors, construction workers and traffic personnel have reported fatigue and discomfort, while local administrations are scaling up water‑supply arrangements in residential sectors.

Electricity demand is also showing an uptick as people run fans and coolers for longer hours. Power distribution units in the state have warned that prolonged heatwaves could strain the grid, especially in cities such as Raipur and Durg, where load growth has been steady in recent months.

What lies ahead

The IMD expects the dry and hot pattern to persist at least until the end of the current week, with isolated heatwave pockets possible when the mercury peaks again on 17–18 April. Officials noted that any relief will depend on the arrival of a fresh synoptic system or monsoon activity, which is not yet visible in the medium‑range forecast.

As the country enters one of its hottest seasons, the Chhattisgarh heatwave alert joins a string of similar warnings across central and north‑central India. For now, the focus remains on public awareness, early‑warning systems and health preparedness in the districts marked for intense heat.
