Former India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has opened up for the first time about his removal from the captaincy and subsequent omission from the national squad, saying he spent around one-and-a-half months trying to understand how the decision had happened.

For players, Olympic inclusion creates a prize that cricket has never previously offered at the elite professional level.

A World Cup remains the sport’s highest-established international honour. An Olympic medal, however, carries significance beyond cricket and places players alongside athletes from every major sport.

India has been promoting Ahmedabad as a possible host. A Games featuring cricket would likely generate greater domestic public interest, larger sponsorship opportunities and stronger broadcast demand than an Olympics without the sport.

The connection should not be overstated. Hosting rights depend on infrastructure, governance, finance, sustainability and the IOC’s assessment of competing bids.

Even so, cricket gives India a powerful argument: an Indian Olympics could connect the movement with one of the world’s largest young populations and its most valuable untapped sports market.

Questions Still Remain

Olympic cricket still faces unresolved issues over player availability, workload and clashes with international or franchise calendars.

The competition will only succeed at its full potential if the best players participate. National boards, the ICC and franchise leagues will need to protect the Olympic window rather than forcing athletes to choose between contracts and national representation.

The six-team structure will also need review after LA28. A tournament that excludes too many major nations may deliver strong ratings but fall short as a genuinely global championship.

Cricket’s return is therefore both an opportunity and a test. The sport can give the Olympics younger viewers, larger Indian revenues and fresh relevance across South Asia. The Games can give cricket global legitimacy, new countries and an entirely new definition of sporting greatness.
