<p>The construction of Nipun by Hindustan Shipyard Limited is significant from the perspective of India’s efforts to expand indigenous defence manufacturing and shipbuilding.</p>

<h2>Google Expands Pixel Manufacturing</h2>
<p>Google began assembling Pixel 8 smartphones in India in 2023 and has since expanded its partnership with Indian electronics manufacturer Dixon Technologies.</p>
<p>The company is now reportedly considering a much larger role for India in its global manufacturing network. Reports indicate that Google could gradually reduce its Pixel production in China, with the shift potentially extending to other devices such as Pixel smartwatches and wireless earbuds.</p>
<p>Some production could also move to Vietnam as Google diversifies its manufacturing operations.</p>
<p>Google has not officially confirmed plans to completely exit Pixel production from China. However, Vaishnaw said the government is regularly engaging with the company and expects India to manufacture a substantial portion of Google's devices for global markets.</p>
<h2>Apple May Make More Products</h2>
<p>Apple is another major technology company expanding its manufacturing presence in India.</p>
<p>The company has manufactured iPhones in India since 2017, with its production network growing through partnerships with Foxconn and the Tata Group. India has increasingly become an export base for iPhones, with a significant portion of locally produced devices shipped to overseas markets, including the US.</p>
<p>The government is now seeking to expand Apple's manufacturing footprint beyond iPhones.</p>
<p>According to Vaishnaw, discussions are underway with Apple regarding the production of additional Apple products and devices in India. However, the government has not disclosed which products could be manufactured or when such production could begin.</p>
<h2>₹62,500 Crore Electronics Scheme</h2>
<p>The Centre is also seeking to develop a deeper electronics manufacturing ecosystem rather than relying primarily on assembling imported components.</p>
<p>To support this objective, the government has approved a <strong>₹62,500-crore scheme for mobile phone manufacturers</strong>, which is expected to operate from 2027 to 2031.</p>
<p>The new programme follows the earlier production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, which ended on March 31, 2026. The government wants the next phase of incentives to encourage companies to increase both finished-device production and component manufacturing in India.</p>
<h2>India Eyes Global Export Hub</h2>
<p>The potential expansion by Google and Apple comes as India attempts to strengthen its position as a global electronics manufacturing and export centre.</p>
<p>For India, increased production by major technology companies could create opportunities for local suppliers, expand manufacturing capabilities and strengthen domestic electronics supply chains.</p>

<p>The programme is expected to be led by Indian companies, with <strong>Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Tata and Mahindra</strong> among the domestic firms involved in the competition, defence officials told ANI.</p>
<p>The procurement is also expected to give a major push to India's efforts to manufacture military aircraft domestically.</p>
<h3><strong>Indian Firms to Lead Programme</strong></h3>
<p>Under the proposed programme, Indian companies will take the lead role, while working with global aircraft manufacturers to develop and produce the transport planes.</p>
<p>Around <strong>20 per cent of the aircraft are expected to be delivered in fly-away condition</strong>, while the remaining aircraft will be manufactured in India.</p>
<p>The domestically produced aircraft are expected to contain <strong>more than 60 per cent indigenous content</strong>, according to defence officials.</p>
<p>The aircraft would be manufactured in India through joint ventures involving Indian companies, original equipment manufacturers and HAL.</p>
<h3><strong>Mahindra Offers C-390 Aircraft</strong></h3>
<p>Mahindra Defence has partnered with Brazilian aerospace company <strong>Embraer</strong> to offer the <strong>C-390 Millennium</strong> transport aircraft for the programme.</p>
<p>The C-390 is a multirole military transport aircraft designed to carry troops, equipment and cargo and can also undertake other missions.</p>
<p>The partnership could give Mahindra an opportunity to expand its role in India's growing military aerospace manufacturing sector.</p>
<h3><strong>Tata Proposes C-130</strong></h3>
<p>Tata is partnering with US defence major <strong>Lockheed Martin</strong> to offer the <strong>C-130</strong> transport aircraft.</p>
<p>The Indian Air Force already operates <strong>12 C-130J Super Hercules aircraft</strong>, which are primarily used for special operations and tactical transport missions.</p>
<p>The existing fleet could give the Tata-Lockheed Martin proposal an advantage in terms of operational familiarity and existing support infrastructure.</p>
<p>The tender, however, will involve a competitive evaluation before a final selection is made.</p>
<h3><strong>C-295 Programme Underway</strong></h3>
<p>The new transport aircraft procurement comes as India is already implementing another major military transport programme involving Airbus.</p>
<p>The IAF is set to induct around <strong>70 C-295 transport aircraft</strong>, with the majority expected to be manufactured in India.</p>
<p>The C-295 programme is being developed as part of India's broader push to establish domestic capabilities in military aircraft manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports.</p>
<p>The new multirole transport aircraft programme would complement rather than replace the C-295 fleet, given the different operational requirements of the aircraft.</p>
<h3><strong>IAF Steps Up Modernisation</strong></h3>
<p>The transport aircraft tender is part of a wider modernisation drive by the Indian Air Force.</p>
<p>The IAF has already issued a tender for <strong>114 Rafale fighter jets</strong> as it seeks to strengthen its fighter fleet and address the shortage of operational squadrons.</p>
<p>The force is also considering the procurement of more than <strong>100 trainer aircraft</strong> to replace its ageing Hawk jet trainers and expand pilot training capacity.</p>
<p>The expansion of training infrastructure has become increasingly important as the IAF works to support the induction of additional fighter aircraft.</p>
<h3><strong>Aircraft May Support Refuelling</strong></h3>
<p>The proposed multirole transport aircraft could have roles beyond conventional cargo and troop movement.</p>
<p>According to defence officials, the IAF may also explore using the aircraft as <strong>aerial refuelling tankers</strong>, allowing fighter aircraft and other platforms to remain airborne for longer periods.</p>
<p>The aircraft would also provide the capability to rapidly move troops, military equipment and supplies across India's large geographical area.</p>
<p>Such a capability would be particularly relevant for India's operational requirements along its land borders.</p>
<h3><strong>Push for Domestic Manufacturing</strong></h3>
<p>The programme is expected to strengthen India's domestic aerospace manufacturing ecosystem by requiring a substantial portion of the aircraft to be produced locally.</p>

<p>The Shahed-class one-way attack drone is reportedly attracting interest from several Gulf countries, potentially opening a new market for Indian-made autonomous strike systems.</p>
<p>The development comes as India continues to expand its defence manufacturing and export footprint. According to the Defence Ministry, India's defence exports reached a record <strong>₹38,424 crore in 2025-26</strong>, marking a 62.66 per cent increase over the previous financial year.</p>
<p>The Kal could become another prominent export product alongside systems such as the <strong>BrahMos missile</strong>, which has emerged as one of India's best-known defence exports.</p>
<h3>What Is the Kal Drone?</h3>
<p>Developed by IG Defence, the Kal is a <strong>long-range, one-way attack drone</strong> designed for deep-strike missions.</p>
<p>Its operational concept is broadly similar to other loitering munitions, including Iran's Shahed family of drones. The system can reportedly remain airborne over a designated area before identifying or engaging a target.</p>
<p>According to specifications provided by IG Defence, the Kal has an operational range of up to <strong>1,000 kilometres</strong> and an endurance of approximately <strong>seven to eight hours</strong>.</p>
<p>The company says the drone can carry a <strong>50-kg payload</strong> and cruise at around <strong>160 kmph</strong>, with a maximum speed of approximately <strong>200 kmph</strong>.</p>
<p>It is designed to operate at altitudes of up to <strong>5,000 metres above mean sea level</strong>.</p>
<h3>Designed for Deep-Strike Missions</h3>
<p>The Kal is intended to target high-value assets at operational depth.</p>
<p>According to IG Defence, its potential targets include <strong>infrastructure, radar installations, air-defence systems and soft or semi-hardened military targets</strong>.</p>
<p>The drone features an advanced guidance and navigation system intended to support autonomous flight during missions.</p>
<p>As a loitering munition, the system can remain in an area before conducting a strike, potentially allowing operators greater flexibility compared with conventional fixed-flight-path weapons.</p>
<p>The company also says the Kal can be launched using <strong>rocket-assisted take-off systems or vehicles</strong>, giving operators different deployment options.</p>
<h3>Gulf Nations Show Interest</h3>
<p>Interest in the Kal is reportedly growing outside India, particularly among countries in the Gulf and other strategically important regions.</p>
<p>IG Defence said on August 5 that it was in advanced discussions with multiple Gulf countries regarding possible procurement.</p>
<p>People associated with the company said talks were at an advanced stage and that some agreements could potentially be concluded during the current financial year.</p>
<p>If successful, the deals could result in the first overseas consignments of the Kal being exported from India.</p>
<p>However, any such export would remain subject to <strong>Government of India approvals and applicable defence export regulations</strong>.</p>
<h3>Why the Gulf Market Matters</h3>
<p>The reported interest comes at a time when military planners worldwide are paying greater attention to relatively affordable long-range unmanned systems.</p>
<p>Recent conflicts have demonstrated how drones can be used for surveillance, precision strikes and attacks against military infrastructure without exposing pilots to direct combat risks.</p>
<p>The wider conflict environment in West Asia has also highlighted the demand for autonomous systems capable of operating over long distances.</p>
