Luxembourg Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Xavier Bettelarrived in India on Monday for a three-day official visit aimed at further strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.

Bettel will be in India from September 7 to 9, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. During his visit, he is scheduled to hold talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi. 

The visit comes as India and Luxembourg continue to expand cooperation across areas including trade and investment, financial services, digital technologies, innovation, space and people-to-people ties. Jaishankar and Bettel had also held discussions earlier this year on the broader India-Luxembourg relationship. 

Bettel to Hold Talks With Jaishankar

The Luxembourg Deputy Prime Minister is expected to meet Jaishankar in New Delhi on Monday as part of his official engagements.

The discussions are likely to provide an opportunity to review bilateral cooperation and exchange views on regional and international developments. The MEA has identified the visit as part of continuing high-level engagement between India and Luxembourg. 

The two countries have maintained diplomatic relations since 1948, with their relationship developing beyond traditional political engagement into areas such as commerce, investment and emerging technologies.

Chennai Visit on the Agenda

After his New Delhi engagements, Bettel will travel to Chennai, where he is scheduled to participate in programmes involving IIT Madras and its Research Park.

He is also scheduled to attend the inauguration of a new SES campus in Chennai. SES, a Luxembourg-headquartered satellite communications company, has an established presence in the global space and connectivity sector.

The Chennai leg is expected to highlight the technology and innovation dimensions of India-Luxembourg cooperation.

Bettel's visit comes amid wider efforts to deepen India's economic and strategic engagement with European countries.

The migration dispute between Spain and Italy has escalated into the Schengen border system, with Spain imposing temporary checks on travellers arriving from Italy by air and sea.

The checks will remain in place for one month, with Spanish authorities saying the measures will continue until September 7, unless changing circumstances lead to an earlier modification.

The move comes after Italy introduced similar restrictions for certain non-EU travellers arriving from Spain, following a major migrant influx into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta.

Border Checks Begin at Midnight

Spain's temporary border controls came into effect at midnight.

Under the measures, authorities will conduct additional checks on passengers arriving from Italy, including verification of passports, nationality and visa information. Travellers from other countries who arrive in Spain through Italy may also be subject to the checks.

Ceuta Migrant Influx Sparks Dispute

The dispute follows the arrival of around 78,000 migrants from Morocco into Ceuta, according to reports cited by Spanish and European authorities.

The Italian government said the restrictions would remain in place at least until August 15, and potentially longer depending on the security situation.

Rome said it would reconsider the measures only after security and terrorism-related risks were deemed to have been fully addressed.

Spain Takes Reciprocal Action

Following Italy's decision, Madrid introduced reciprocal measures on travellers arriving from Italy.

Reports have indicated that passengers have faced longer queues and increased waiting times at some airports.

Spanish authorities said the checks were introduced amid what they described as "persistent irregular migratory pressure".

The additional screening will include passport, nationality and visa checks. Non-EU nationals travelling through Italy may therefore face additional scrutiny when entering Spain.

Most of the migrants who entered Ceuta during the recent influx were reportedly returned to Morocco within days.

However, the episode has triggered a wider diplomatic dispute between Spain and Italy, bringing migration policy and internal European border controls back into focus.

The latest measures also raise questions about how far individual Schengen countries can rely on temporary border controls during periods of migration or security concerns.

For now, Spain's checks are scheduled to remain in place until September 7, while Italy's measures are set to continue at least through August 15.

A violent clash inside a gurudwara in Moers, Germany, left at least 11 people injured, with some reports suggesting the number could be significantly higher. The incident took place on Sunday at the Singh Sabha Gurudwara when devotees had gathered for prayers.
