PM Narendra Modi alleges “jungle rule” under TMC as Bengal polls see high turnout; BJP claims momentum after Phase 1 voting

High-stakes rally

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday intensified his attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) during a rally in Dum Dum, asserting that the first phase of West Bengal Assembly elections signals a decisive shift in voter sentiment. Addressing supporters, he claimed that the initial polling phase had “sounded the death knell” for what he described as the TMC’s “jungle rule”.

The remarks came amid heightened political activity following a record voter turnout of over 92 per cent in Phase 1, covering more than 150 constituencies.

Sharp political attack

At the rally, Modi alleged that the state had witnessed years of corruption, lawlessness, and fear under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He said the people of Bengal were now seeking “freedom from fear, corruption, and syndicate culture”.

He further stated that once election results are declared on May 4, “those responsible for crimes will have no place to hide,” indicating a tough stance on law and order if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) forms the government.

Women’s safety focus

Highlighting women’s safety as a key campaign issue, the Prime Minister said the BJP would prioritise justice for victims and reopen pending cases of atrocities against women. “This is Modi’s guarantee,” he told the gathering, asserting that the party supports a women-led development model.

He also criticised the state government’s handling of crimes against women, alleging that victims were discouraged from seeking justice.

High turnout impact

Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the high voter turnout reflected a “journey from fear to trust”. Addressing a press conference, Shah claimed that the BJP was poised to win a majority of seats in the first phase and expressed confidence about forming the next government.

According to officials, the voter turnout in Phase 1 is among the highest recorded in the state, with polling conducted peacefully across most constituencies.

Campaign intensifies

Political rhetoric has sharpened across party lines. TMC leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee, have countered BJP’s allegations, accusing the opposition of harbouring individuals with questionable backgrounds. Meanwhile, Congress leaders have linked the high turnout to a mix of anti-incumbency sentiment and voter mobilisation efforts.

Multiple rallies, roadshows, and public meetings are being held across the state as parties gear up for the second phase of polling scheduled for April 29.

Symbolic outreach move

Earlier in the day, Modi took a boat ride on the Hooghly River, interacting with local boatmen and residents. Sharing his experience on social media, he described the river as central to Bengal’s cultural identity.

The outreach was seen by political observers as part of a broader strategy to connect with local communities during the election campaign.

What lies ahead

With one phase completed, attention now shifts to the remaining rounds of voting. Election officials have introduced stricter guidelines to ensure transparency and security of polling data.

The results, scheduled for May 4, will determine whether the BJP can make significant inroads in the state or if the TMC retains power for another term
