Investigators had taken both accused from the district jail on a 39-hour remand on Saturday morning. According to police sources, they remained at the Special Operations Group (SOG) office throughout the interrogation and were not taken to any other location during the remand period.

Tinnu reportedly supervised the Ram Mandir's donation boxes and was considered a close aide of former trust General Secretary Champat Rai, while Manish was allegedly involved in counting the offerings.

Police have recovered ₹1 lakh from Tinnu's residence and ₹2 lakh from Manish's house. Earlier, six other suspects had also been questioned in connection with the alleged financial irregularities.

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust will hold a crucial meeting in Ayodhya on 22 July, where several important issues are expected to be discussed.

Trust Says ₹3,264 Crore Received in Donations

According to the trust, it has received ₹3,264 crore through the Nidhi Samarpan campaign and corpus donations since its formation.

• ₹2,370 crore has been spent on temple construction and related development works.
• ₹582 crore has been received as offerings from devotees until 31 March 2026.
• ₹391 crore has been utilized for temple management and operational expenses, while the remaining funds have been deposited in bank accounts.

Twenty-three employees responsible for counting donations at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya have resigned simultaneously, citing a sharp increase in workload without any corresponding increase in salary. The resignations come amid the ongoing investigation into the alleged donation theft case, which has intensified scrutiny of the temple's donation management system.

The employees said changes in the pattern of donations following the alleged theft have significantly slowed the counting process. According to them, offerings now contain a much higher volume of ₹10 and ₹20 notes, replacing the larger denomination currency notes that were previously more common.

Earlier, staff members used to prepare 70 to 80 bundles of ₹500 notes during a shift, allowing the counting process to be completed relatively quickly. They now manage only around 15 bundles of ₹500 notes, while processing a substantially larger number of smaller denomination notes, increasing the time required to complete the work.

Longer Working Hours Trigger Resignations

The resigning employees also alleged that their working hours have increased following changes in the counting schedule.

According to the staff, donation counting was previously carried out in two shifts, with each employee working approximately six hours. The system has now been replaced with a single shift running from 9 am to 6 pm, extending working hours without any revision in wages.

They said the increased workload, combined with unchanged salaries, compelled them to submit their resignations. Following the resignations, only 13 donation-counting employees remain with the bank responsible for handling the temple's offerings.

Supreme Court to Hear Case on July 13

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the Ram Temple donation theft case on July 13. A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant will take up three petitions related to the matter.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has frozen 30 bank accounts linked to the accused and their family members after investigators found financial transactions that were allegedly disproportionate to their known sources of income.

On Wednesday, police had similarly taken co-accused Lavkush Mishra and Karunesh Pandey to their residences for searches. All three accused were subsequently placed on 40-hour police remand for further questioning.

Investigators also recovered forged donation receipts during the searches, which are expected to play a key role in establishing how the alleged fraud was carried out.

According to records under examination, approximately ₹113 crore was spent on the consecration ceremony, which was attended by nearly 8,000 guests, while around ₹10.12 crore was spent on the flag-hoisting event. Investigators are verifying whether financial procedures were properly followed during these programmes.

Champat Rai Meets Trust Treasurer

Meanwhile, Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust Treasurer Swami Govind Dev Giri met Trust General Secretary Champat Rai, who has been staying in seclusion at Teerth Kshetra Puram near the Ram Mandir complex.

On Tuesday, Rai publicly denied all allegations through a written statement, asserting that the accusations against him were baseless and that he had no involvement in any financial irregularities.

Uttar Pradesh Minister Gulab Devi said the state government would ensure strict action against everyone found guilty, irrespective of their influence or position. The SIT has held Dr Anil Mishra responsible for major procedural and security lapses in the donation counting system. Investigators said he was overseeing financial management, cash collection operations and coordination related to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for handling donations.

The report noted that information regarding employees not being properly searched had already reached him through internal channels, but no effective corrective orders were issued.

Among the shortcomings identified by the SIT were:

• Absence of biometric attendance for staff

• Lack of mandatory uniforms

• Employees carrying personal belongings into the counting room

• Improper records of donation boxes and collected cash

• Weak daily reporting and monitoring mechanisms

Investigators said these gaps created opportunities for repeated theft of donations.

Six employees named in report

The SIT said preliminary evidence directly links six accused employees to the alleged thefts:

Police sources said accused Avinash Shukla allegedly confessed to spending a significant portion of the stolen money on family members and personal expenses.

• 1,121 US dollars

• Gold jewellery

• Silver ornaments

• A car allegedly purchased using the proceeds

The SIT is also examining property transactions and fixed deposits linked to the accused and their relatives.

Counting room key issue

Another serious concern highlighted in the report relates to Ramashankar Yadav alias Tinnu, who allegedly kept the keys of the donation box counting room without any formal written authorisation.

The SIT further stated that Tinnu had recommended the appointment of Manish Kumar Yadav for counting work, and Manish was later found allegedly involved in the theft.

Trust meeting and ongoing investigation

The preliminary report was submitted to the government on June 23 by the three-member SIT comprising Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, Lucknow Range IG Kiran S and Finance Department Special Secretary Neel Ratan.

Investigators have clarified that the current findings are only preliminary and that the probe is continuing into:

• Additional security failures

• Possible involvement of other individuals

• Responsibility of officials

• Systemic weaknesses in donation management

Since its formation on February 5, 2020, every Trust meeting had previously been led by Champat Rai in his capacity as General Secretary.

Under the Trust's constitution, the resignation of a trustee or office-bearer does not become effective immediately upon submission. It requires formal consideration and acceptance by the Trust during a meeting. Similarly, the removal of a trustee requires a two-thirds majority after issuing a show-cause notice and providing an opportunity for the concerned individual to present their case.

The Trust meeting comes amid heightened scrutiny following allegations that employees responsible for counting devotees' offerings siphoned off cash and valuables. Investigators have reportedly recovered deleted CCTV footage with the assistance of forensic and IT experts. While the visuals allegedly show individuals concealing currency notes in their socks and pockets, police are continuing efforts to enhance the footage to establish clear identities.

Trust President Mahant Nritya Gopal Das broke his silence over the controversy, describing the alleged theft as deeply painful.

In a written statement, he said he was "deeply hurt" by the incident and demanded the strictest possible punishment for those responsible. He also expressed confidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath would ensure that all those involved face appropriate legal action. Appealing for restraint, he urged people not to politicise an issue that concerns the faith of millions of devotees.

Meanwhile, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court dismissed a petition seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged theft. The court observed that a similar matter is already pending before the Supreme Court, making further intervention unnecessary at this stage.

The petition had been filed by Lucknow-based advocate Mohit Ashok on June 12, requesting an independent central investigation into the allegations.

The controversy has also intensified political exchanges in Uttar Pradesh. Congress leader Imran Masood termed the alleged theft a serious breach of public faith, claiming that the scale of donations received by the temple warranted a thorough investigation.

On the other hand, BJP spokesperson R.P. Singh said the Trust meeting would not only review the progress of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe but also discuss the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer and examine the Trust's financial statements for the previous financial year.

Samajwadi Party leaders continued to target the Trust's functioning, while BJP leaders accused the opposition of attempting to politicise the issue and tarnish the image of the Ram Temple.

The police investigation has also uncovered financial transactions allegedly linked to one of the arrested accused, Avinash Shukla, who was involved in counting donations. Investigators claim that despite drawing a monthly salary of around ₹15,000, he allegedly purchased a house, bought a vehicle, transferred money to his girlfriend, and gifted her an iPhone. Authorities are now examining the bank accounts of the accused as well as those of their family members to trace suspected proceeds.

Security has been tightened around the temple complex ahead of the Trust meeting, with barricades installed and vehicle movement restricted near the venue. The outcome of Monday's deliberations is expected to shape the Trust's administrative future while also influencing public confidence in the management of one of India's most prominent religious institutions.

The alleged theft of donations at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya has taken a dramatic turn, with the investigation widening, internal differences emerging within the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, and authorities preparing strict action against the accused. As the Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues its probe, fresh allegations, political reactions, and possible demolition of illegally constructed properties have intensified the controversy.

In a significant development, Trust trustee Mahant Dinendra Das Maharaj publicly blamed Ram Mandir construction in-charge Gopal Rao for the situation. He alleged that Gopal Rao had created confusion within the Trust and accused him of "playing politics." Mahant Dinendra Das also claimed that Gopal Rao does not follow the traditional customs associated with Lord Ram, adding that the responsibility for the controversy rests with him.

The remarks mark the first visible public disagreement among senior members of the Ram Janmabhoomi Trust since the donation theft case surfaced. Gopal Rao, originally from Karnataka, serves as the temple's construction in-charge and is an invited member of the Trust.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government is reportedly preparing stringent action against those accused in the case. According to official sources, the Ayodhya Development Authority (ADA) has identified several residential properties allegedly built in violation of building regulations or without approved maps. These properties, reportedly linked to the accused, may soon face demolition proceedings after the issuance of legal notices.

Among the structures under scrutiny are the under-construction residence of accused Lavkush Mishra in Shahadatganj and the house of Anukalp Mishra in Kaushalpuri. Authorities are examining whether these properties were constructed after the accused became associated with temple-related work and whether they comply with local development regulations.

The investigation has also received a fresh lead after a video surfaced allegedly showing Amit Shukla, brother of accused Avinash Shukla, holding bundles of currency notes. Police have confirmed that the authenticity of the video is being verified as part of the ongoing investigation.

The SIT, whose tenure has now been extended until July 15, continues to expand the scope of its inquiry. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath approved the extension after investigators sought additional time to complete a detailed probe. The SIT had earlier submitted its preliminary findings to the Home Department on June 23.

Investigators have already questioned several key individuals connected with the Trust. General Secretary Champat Rai was interrogated for nearly three hours, while further questioning of trustee Dr. Anil Mishra is expected to verify details regarding the appointment of accused employees Lavkush Mishra and Anukalp Mishra.

The case first came into public focus on June 7, following allegations of large-scale embezzlement of temple donations. An SIT was constituted on June 13, and an FIR was registered on June 25, leading to the arrest of eight individuals allegedly involved in the misappropriation of donation funds.

Police investigations have revealed substantial cash recoveries from the accused. Officials recovered nearly ₹79.85 lakh in cash, 1,121 US dollars, and gold and silver ornaments from various locations linked to the accused. According to investigators, several of the accused allegedly acquired properties worth crores using the misappropriated donation money.

Among those arrested are Ramshankar Yadav alias Tinnu, Anukalp Mishra, Lavkush Mishra, Avinash Shukla, Karunesh Pandey, Manish Yadav, Ramshankar Mishra, and Subhash Chandra Shrivastava. They have all been remanded to 14-day judicial custody.

The probe has also extended to banking transactions. Police have sought account details of employees from multiple branches of the State Bank of India in Ayodhya to examine financial transactions and identify any wider network linked to the alleged embezzlement.

Adding another dimension to the case, a report prepared by RSS functionary Anil Kumar has reportedly been submitted to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat after reviewing temple administration, Trust functioning, and the alleged financial irregularities. Sources indicate that the report could influence discussions during the upcoming Trust meeting scheduled for July 6 in Ayodhya.

Political reactions have also intensified. Uttar Pradesh BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary said that anyone found guilty would not be spared, irrespective of their position. Union Minister S.P. Singh Baghel stated that crimes involving religious institutions evoke stronger public emotions and asserted that the SIT investigation would bring out the complete truth. State ministers Dayashankar Singh and Dharamveer Prajapati also expressed confidence that the investigation would proceed impartially and all facts would emerge.

As the investigation progresses, authorities continue to examine financial records, property documents, CCTV monitoring systems, and the functioning of the temple's donation management process. The outcome of the SIT's final report is expected to determine the next course of legal and administrative action in one of the most sensitive cases involving the Ram Mandir Trust.

Addressing a press conference and later sharing his remarks on social media, Kejriwal claimed that Amit Shah had not visited the Ram Temple after the consecration ceremony at Ayodhya. He alleged that despite repeatedly referring to Lord Ram and the temple in public speeches, the senior BJP leader had not undertaken a visit to offer prayers at the shrine.

Kejriwal said the issue raised questions about the BJP’s commitment to the values and faith it frequently highlights during elections and political campaigns. According to the AAP chief, religious symbolism should not be used merely as a political tool.

The remarks have added another dimension to the ongoing political contest between the BJP and the AAP, which has intensified ahead of upcoming electoral battles in several states. Religion and faith-based political narratives continue to remain central themes in public discourse, particularly after the construction and inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

During the media interaction, Kejriwal also referred to reports regarding an alleged irregularity involving offerings at the Ram Temple. He said the reports had caused concern among devotees and demanded accountability if any wrongdoing had taken place.

The AAP leader argued that any allegations linked to a major religious institution should be investigated thoroughly and transparently. He maintained that devotees across the country expect complete integrity in the management of religious donations and temple affairs.

Kejriwal further accused the BJP of invoking Lord Ram and Sanatan values during political campaigns while failing to uphold those principles in governance. He alleged that the party’s public messaging and political actions were often disconnected.

In a significant political assertion, Kejriwal described AAP as a party committed to Sanatan values and claimed that his party had worked for religious and cultural causes during its tenure in government. He contrasted this with what he described as the BJP’s “selective use” of religious issues for electoral purposes.

The BJP had not immediately responded to the specific allegations at the time of reporting. The party has consistently maintained that the Ram Temple project reflects the fulfillment of a long-standing cultural and civilizational aspiration of millions of devotees across the country.

Rai alleges government trying to suppress voice over donation theft; other Congress leaders also detained; eight accused in embezzlement case sent to 14-day judicial custody

Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai was placed under house arrest by police late Monday night at a hotel in Ayodhya, hours before he was scheduled to lead a party delegation to offer prayers at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple and protest outside the Trust office over the alleged donation theft.

According to Congress sources, Rai was taken into custody from Hotel Padam Shri Palace around 11:30 pm and later shifted to the guest house of Acharya Narendra Deva University of Agriculture and Technology in Kumarganj, about 60 km from Ayodhya. Heavy police deployment was made outside the university's gates, with security personnel stationed at Gates No. 1 and 2.

A nine-member Congress delegation, which included Amethi MP Kishori Lal Sharma, Barabanki MP Tanuj Punia, Prayagraj MP Ujjwal Raman Singh, Sitapur MP Rakesh Rathor, former Rajya Sabha MP SP Gautam, former MLC Deepak Singh, former MLA Meeta Gautam and Pharenda MLA Virendra Chaudhary, was scheduled to visit Ayodhya on Tuesday to offer prayers and have darshan of Ramlala.

Tanuj Punia claimed he was placed under house arrest in Barabanki before he could leave for Ayodhya. Ujjwal Raman Singh was similarly confined to his residence in Prayagraj from 10 am on Tuesday. Congress district president of Pratapgarh Neeraj Tripathi was also detained, the party alleged.

'Won't leave without darshan'

Speaking to reporters, Rai alleged the government was trying to prevent Congress leaders from visiting the shrine. "I had reached Ayodhya a day earlier because we anticipated that something like this could happen. Despite that, we have been stopped from offering prayers," he said.

In a video statement, Rai said: "We all intended to visit Ayodhya to seek the blessings of Lord Shri Ram. We had formed a delegation led by me to offer prayers and seek darshan. We also wanted to pray to the Lord regarding the disrepute brought to this holy site by the RSS and BJP through the theft of offerings and donations, as well as land scams".

"Our colleagues and I were placed under house arrest. We are being subjected to harassment and are being prevented from visiting the temple. We are prepared to do whatever it takes, even if it means going to jail or giving up food and water for a few days to ensure we get to offer our prayers," he added.

Rai asserted he would not leave Ayodhya without offering prayers. "I will go on a hunger strike if required, but I won't leave Ayodhya without offering prayers. We wanted to pray before Ram and Lord Hanuman for the way Ayodhya has been defamed because of the greed of some people from the RSS and BJP," he told The Indian Express.

Wife alleges government trying to silence him

Ajay Rai's wife, Reena Rai, released a video statement from Varanasi, accusing the BJP government of attempting to suppress her husband's voice. "The BJP government is prepared to stoop to any level to silence my husband. After taking him away in a police vehicle, our associates are now being misled with false information. Our fight against the 'donation thieves' will continue. If anything happens to my husband, the entire responsibility will lie with this unrighteous BJP government," she said.

Congress terms action unconstitutional

The Uttar Pradesh Congress termed the action unconstitutional and demanded the immediate release of its leaders. In a post on X, the party questioned: "Has it now become a crime in UP to even have darshan of Lord Shri Ram?"

"Lord Shri Ram does not belong to any single political party or ideology; He is a symbol of the faith and culture of the entire country. Stopping devotees from going to Ayodhya is unconstitutional," the party said.

Senior Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi accused the BJP government of curbing the fundamental right of devotees. "The BJP government wants to control who can offer prayers. This reflects the dictatorial functioning of the Yogi Adityanath government," Awasthi alleged.

CM Yogi hits back

At an event in Rampur on Tuesday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched a counter-attack, saying those who had once denied the existence of Lord Ram now wanted to visit Ayodhya. "The very people who, before 2017, had devotees beaten for chanting 'Jai Shri Ram' are now invoking faith," he said. "The Congress had once denied the very existence of Lord Ram, but now it says Ram belongs to everyone. Everyone is eager to visit Ayodhya. But Lord Ram is the Lord of the universe. He knows who is right and who is wrong."

Donation theft case: Eight accused sent to judicial custody

The political confrontation comes amid an ongoing probe into the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram Mandir. On Monday, a local court in Ayodhya remanded all eight accused to 14 days of judicial custody. Police had arrested the eight accused following an FIR registered on June 25 on the complaint of Trust member Krishna Mohan.

The accused include Ramshankar Yadav alias Tinnu, who is described as a close associate of former Trust General Secretary Champat Rai. On June 28, eight police teams conducted simultaneous raids at the homes of the accused. At Tinnu's residence, investigators recovered documents relating to investments, property purchases, jewellery and cash.

Champat Rai, Anil Mishra resign; Trust meeting advanced

Trust General Secretary Champat Rai and Trustee Dr Anil Mishra resigned on June 27, two days after the FIR was registered, taking "moral responsibility" for the alleged embezzlement. Sources say Champat Rai left Ayodhya for Delhi on Sunday evening to present his case and seek support from RSS and VHP leadership.

The Trust has advanced its scheduled meeting from July 11 to July 6 to consider the resignations. Sources claim the SIT may hold Champat Rai, Dr Mishra and Gopal Rao responsible in its final report, and registration of an FIR against them is likely once the report is submitted.

Police expand financial investigation

Police have expanded the financial investigation, seeking details of bank accounts belonging to employees working at more than three State Bank of India branches in the Ayodhya area. Investigators are scrutinising bank transactions and financial links of the accused.

Owaisi, Mayawati react

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said in Bijnor: "The Trust made a mistake. They should have appointed a Muslim to the Trust and then blamed him. The entire matter would have been settled. But now Champat is facing the consequences".

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati said those guilty of temple offering theft must not be spared.

Meanwhile, Congress workers staged a sit-in protest outside the Agriculture University's Gate No. 1, demanding Rai's release. Police used mild force to disperse Congress workers who attempted to march towards the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, detaining several workers including former Rajya Sabha MP Aliya Zubairi.
