The investigation into the suspected illicit liquor tragedy in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district has widened, with police FIRs naming around 30 people, including two licensed liquor contractors, in connection with two brands identified in complaints as ‘Bambaiya Whisky’ and ‘Sagar Gold’.

The cases relate to the Banda and Shahgarh areas, where several people fell ill after consuming liquor sold at reportedly low prices. The officially confirmed death toll stood at 13 as of September 7, according to the district administration, which has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. However, subsequent reports citing villagers, hospital sources and cremation records put the toll as high as 22, while authorities have not officially confirmed that higher figure. 

The inquiry will establish the exact cause of death and determine whether consumption of illicit or substandard liquor was responsible for the fatalities. 

Two FIRs name licensed contractors

The first FIR, registered at Banda police station, names licensed liquor contractor Yashwant Singh Thakur in connection with the alleged sale of the ‘Bambaiya Whisky’ brand.

A second FIR at Vinayaka police station names licensed contractor Siddharth Kushwaha in connection with allegations surrounding ‘Sagar Gold’.

The FIRs also name several other individuals allegedly involved in manufacturing, transporting, supplying or selling the liquor. Police are investigating whether the two brands were part of a wider illegal distribution network operating through villages and local outlets.

Importantly, the allegations contained in the FIRs have not yet been established in court.

‘Bambaiya Whisky’ case

According to the Banda FIR, complainant Anup Singh Lodhi told police that liquor was allegedly being sold illegally in his village.

The complaint states that a new, cheaper brand was being promoted to customers. It alleges that a quarter bottle of ‘Bambaiya Whisky’ was sold for around ₹70, reportedly ₹20 below the prevailing price.

The FIR further alleges that Rajendra Lodhi consumed the liquor before falling seriously ill. He was taken first to Banda hospital and subsequently referred to Sagar, where he died during treatment.

The complaint also refers to other deaths allegedly linked to liquor consumption.

Police have named multiple individuals in the case, including Yashwant Thakur, Manish Lodhi, Ashish Sahu and several alleged sellers and intermediaries.

‘Sagar Gold’ case

A separate complaint registered at Vinayaka police station concerns another brand, ‘Sagar Gold’.

According to the FIR, a resident of Patan told police that his nephew became seriously ill after allegedly consuming liquor purchased from a local seller.

The complaint alleges that the quarter bottle was sold for ₹60, with the seller reportedly describing it as a cheaper new brand.

The man subsequently developed vomiting and other symptoms and was taken to hospital, where he died during treatment, according to the complaint.

The FIR names licensed contractor Siddharth Kushwaha along with several other people allegedly connected with the supply and sale of the liquor.

Police are now examining the alleged chain from procurement and manufacturing to transportation and retail sale.

Seven liquor shops sealed

Following the incident, the district administration sealed seven liquor shops as a precautionary measure. These include outlets in Barethi, Banda, Shahgarh, Magardha, Vinayaka, Dalpatpur and Baraytha.

Samples of liquor found at the outlets have also been collected and sent for testing. The laboratory findings are expected to be important in determining whether the liquor contained toxic or prohibited substances and whether it was connected to the deaths.

The administration's action comes amid growing questions over how allegedly illicit liquor reached consumers in the affected villages.

Magisterial inquiry ordered

Sagar Collector and District Magistrate Pratibha Pal has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

The inquiry will examine the circumstances surrounding the illnesses and deaths, establish the actual cause of death, identify those responsible and determine whether there were lapses by regulatory departments.

The investigation will also examine the alleged manufacturing, storage and distribution chain and whether officials responsible for liquor regulation failed to perform their duties. (The Statesman)

UP connection remains disputed

A proposed Uttar Pradesh connection has also become a point of dispute.

Sagar police had indicated a possible link to Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh, but officials in Lalitpur subsequently rejected the claim, describing the information circulated by Sagar police as misleading and asking for evidence to be shared if such a link exists. (Amar Ujala)

Meanwhile, the tragedy has triggered political criticism in Madhya Pradesh. Congress leaders have accused the government and enforcement machinery of failing to prevent the alleged illegal liquor network. An 87-year-old woman in Bilaspur district has accused a local BJP-supported panch of using KYC, paddy-registration and insurance pretexts to grab property and cash worth about ₹90 lakh, and on Thursday the police booked the accused after the matter reached the SSP’s office.

Allegations and lead details
According to the complaint filed by Balkunvar Basor of Belgahna village, the accused — identified as panch Fagun Prasad Prajapati alias Monu, a resident of Kenda — cultivated a relationship by offering help and carrying out KYC formalities for her bank account. Initial reports indicate that on 14 December 2021, about ₹23 lakh was transferred from Basor’s Indian State Bank account into the accused’s account, the complaint says.

Land and documents
Basor told officials she was taken to Kota tehsil in July and September 2022 for “paddy registration” that was presented as necessary to sell produce. She alleges multiple documents were signed and thumb impressions taken. Later, when Basor checked with the cooperative bank and the patwari, she learned that no paddy sale had been recorded in her name and that two plots — khata numbers 763 and 991/2, totalling about 6.34 acres (roughly 2.5 hectares) in Lufa gram panchayat — had been transferred in the accused’s name.

Vehicle and jewellery transfers
The complaint also states that vehicles registered earlier in the name of her deceased son Ramesh — a Centro car, an Activa and a small commercial vehicle — were shown to require insurance or paperwork updates. Basor alleges that after giving thumb impressions, she later found the three vehicles transferred to Prajapati’s name. She further says gold and silver kept at home were taken by the accused.

Local response and police delays
Basor and her relatives said they repeatedly approached local authorities — Belgahna police chowki, the SDOP office in Kota and the SSP office in Bilaspur — seeking redress. They allege the police delayed action for a long time and, after what they say was an intermediary payment of ₹2 lakh from the accused’s side, told them the matter was not fit for investigation and advised them to pursue civil remedies in court under Section 174 final report procedures.

Escalation to IG, SSP intervention
On Thursday, Basor visited the IG office in Bilaspur and submitted a written complaint to DSP Vivek Sharma after she could not meet IG Ramgopal Garg. Her submission included a request for dignity and, as she described it, a plea for “right to die” (a statement she used to highlight her distress at alleged injustice). DSP Sharma said he would review the matter and ensure action, sources said.

After the application reached SSP Rajnesh Singh, the police ordered a probe and registered a case against Prajapati under sections related to cheating, fraudulent transfer of property and other relevant provisions. Officers are now examining bank transactions, land registry entries and vehicle transfer documents, a police official confirmed.

Villagers and relatives described Basor as a widow who survives by selling jhawa-tukni (bamboo baskets); she lives with one daughter who cares for her. Neighbours told reporters the family had little means and that the case had created palpable anger in the locality. Several residents said they had seen the accused routinely helping the elderly woman before the alleged transfers came to light.

Police said forensic scrutiny of the disputed signatures and thumb impressions, along with bank records and land registry documents, will determine whether the transfers were fraudulent. The investigating officer added that records from the cooperative bank and the tehsil office were being sought and that vehicle registration and insurance companies would be asked for transfer paperwork.

Police in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir-Champa district have arrested a pastor and a local resident after a healing prayer meeting at a private house sparked allegations of religious conversion and hurting Hindu sentiments.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning in the Guddipara area of Udayband village under the City Kotwali police station. According to police, a “chungi sabha” or healing assembly was organised at the residence of Badrinath Bareth, 40. Locals, including several women and men from the village, gathered for the event.

Healing Claims Spark Row

Organisers allegedly distributed Christian literature and offered “miraculous water” to participants, claiming it could cure ailments. A video that surfaced later showed the pastor making strong remarks against Hindu deities. He reportedly told the gathering that gods like Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma “could do nothing,” while two sips of the blessed water from Jesus Christ would heal all diseases.

The remarks triggered immediate backlash. Activists from the Hindu Jagran Manch reached the spot after receiving information about the gathering. Suresh Soni, a local functionary of the outfit, alleged that people were being lured under the pretext of medical treatment and persuaded to change their faith.

Complaint Leads to Swift Police Action

Soni and other Hindu activists lodged a written complaint at the City Kotwali police station. They accused the pastor and the house owner of attempting religious conversion and making derogatory statements against Hindu gods. Acting on the complaint, police registered an FIR against the duo under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 299 and Section 3(5).

Pastor Rathram Milhange, 38, and Badrinath Bareth were taken into custody the same day. Both were later produced before a magistrate and sent to judicial remand. Police also seized Christian religious literature from the spot.
