Collision with moving vehicle compounds disaster as workers headed to factory

A routine industrial commute turned catastrophic on the Indore-Ahmedabad National Highway late Wednesday evening when an overcrowded pickup truck burst a tyre at high speed, careening across the median and colliding head-on with an oncoming vehicle. The crash near Chikhalia toll gate, close to a Geo petrol pump, left 16 workers dead and 13 others critically wounded. Six of the deceased were children.

Initial investigations suggest the pickup was travelling at approximately 100 kilometres per hour when the mechanical failure occurred around 8:30 PM. The vehicle, reportedly carrying around 50 labourers—far exceeding safe passenger limits—flipped multiple times before striking a moving Scorpio SUV on the opposite lane.

Rescue Operations Stretch Resources

Emergency responders from Dhar district hospital arrived within minutes of the first distress calls. The scale of the tragedy quickly overwhelmed initial medical capacity. Ambulances transported the dead and injured to the district facility, where nurses were forced to double up child patients on single beds due to bed shortages. Four additional critically injured victims were shifted to Indore's Government MY Hospital, with three now in intensive care units.

Dr. Mahendra Sharma, the attending physician at Dhar district hospital, described the scene as unprecedented in scale. "We had multiple mass casualty protocols activated simultaneously," he said in a brief statement Thursday morning.

Final Rites, Multiple Deaths

The scale of losses forced families to conduct joint cremations. In Semlipura village Thursday, four women from different families were cremated together on a single pyre—a decision made out of necessity rather than custom. Authorities are preparing for similar joint funerals in Nayapur, where nine members of a single extended family perished in the crash.

Local officials confirmed that several of the deceased had travelled from neighbouring villages, indicating they were part of organised groups heading to industrial zones in Gujarat. The pickup's final destination remains under investigation.

State and National Response

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announced immediate relief measures within hours of the disaster. Families of the deceased will receive ₹4 lakh each, while those with severe injuries will get ₹1 lakh. Other injured passengers are eligible for ₹50,000 in state assistance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also acknowledged the tragedy through a social media post, extending condolences to affected families. The Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) allocated an additional ₹2 lakh per deceased family member's household, with injured workers receiving ₹50,000.

In-charge Minister for Dhar, Kailash Vijayvargiya, visited the district hospital Thursday morning. The Indore Divisional Commissioner and Inspector General have been directed to personally oversee treatment protocols. All medical care for the injured has been declared free across government facilities in both Dhar and Indore.

Emerging Questions on Vehicle Safety

Transport department officials have initiated a formal inquiry into the pickup's mechanical condition. Questions have surfaced regarding regular maintenance checks, tyre replacement protocols, and whether the vehicle possessed valid commercial permits for passenger transport.

The accident revives ongoing concerns about industrial worker safety standards across Madhya Pradesh's manufacturing belt. Labour unions have called for stricter enforcement of vehicle inspection regulations, particularly for vehicles used to ferry daily-wage workers across state boundaries.

Ground Reality

In the hours following the crash, the Dhar district hospital resembled a crisis zone. Family members camped outside wards, many having travelled overnight from remote villages. Women wailed outside the mortuary as bodies awaited identification. By Thursday morning, most deceased had been claimed and transported home for funeral rites.

The pickup's twisted metal wreckage was towed away by evening, leaving only skid marks and debris along the highway—a stark reminder of how quickly ordinary Wednesday evenings can turn into community tragedies.
