In a fresh twist to the much-discussed Raja Raghuvanshi honeymoon murder case, the victim’s family has decided to move the Meghalaya High Court to get the bail granted to prime accused Sonam Raghuvanshi cancelled. Raja’s brother Vipin Raghuvanshi confirmed that they have already contacted a lawyer in Shillong and begun the legal process by sending back signed documents.

The development comes days after a Shillong court released Sonam on bail following more than ten months in judicial custody. The family, still grappling with the brutal killing of the 29-year-old Indore-based transport businessman, expressed shock and disbelief over the decision.

Shocking Honeymoon Killing

Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam got married on May 11, 2025, in Indore. Just ten days later, on May 21, the couple left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya. They reached Shillong and proceeded to the scenic Sohra (Cherrapunjee) area. On May 23, Raja went missing under mysterious circumstances.

Ten days later, on June 2, his mutilated body was recovered from a 30-foot-deep gorge near a waterfall in the East Khasi Hills. Police found multiple stab wounds inflicted by sharp weapons. One knife was later recovered from the jungle. Sonam, who was initially reported missing, surfaced in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur and surrendered to police on June 9, 2025.

Alleged Conspiracy and Arrests

According to the Meghalaya Police, Sonam allegedly orchestrated the murder with the help of her purported lover Raj Kushwaha and three others — Akash Rajput, Anand Kurmi, and Vishal Singh Chauhan. The plan was reportedly executed while the couple was sightseeing. The accused allegedly took Raja to a remote spot on the pretext of visiting tourist spots and attacked him with knives.

Three more people were arrested later for allegedly destroying evidence. All five main accused were sent to judicial custody in Shillong. Earlier, bail was granted to three co-accused, while Sonam’s previous three bail applications were rejected.

Initial reports indicated that Sonam had an alleged affair, though her family had denied it. Police said she allegedly masterminded the killing shortly after marriage.

Court Grants Bail Citing Procedural Lapses

On April 28, 2026, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial) D.R. Kharbteng granted bail to Sonam, citing serious lapses by police in communicating the grounds of her arrest. The court observed that arrest documents, including the memo and case diary extracts, wrongly mentioned a non-existent or incorrect section under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) instead of the actual murder provision. This procedural error was held to have prejudiced her defence.

Sonam was released on conditions: she must furnish a personal bond of ₹50,000 with sureties, remain within the court’s jurisdiction (not leave Shillong without permission), attend all hearings, and not tamper with evidence or influence witnesses. Her father reportedly reached Shillong and arranged the bail.

Family’s Anger and Next Legal Step

The decision has left Raja’s family distraught. Vipin Raghuvanshi said they do not accept the bail order and will challenge it strongly in the High Court. “We have spoken to a lawyer in Shillong. Documents have been sent, and we will sign and return them soon to file the appeal. It may take about a week,” he told reporters.

Raja’s mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, voiced deep anguish. She reportedly said that if Sonam comes to Indore, she would ask her directly why she killed her son and what wrong he had done. The family has also raised questions over the investigation and demanded a CBI probe to ensure justice.

Sources familiar with the matter said the family feels the lower court order failed to consider the gravity of the crime and the role allegedly played by the main accused.

Public Impact and Trial Ahead

The case had sent shockwaves across the country when it came to light last year, highlighting the dark side of what should have been a joyous honeymoon. For Indore’s business community, especially those in transport, Raja’s killing was a personal loss that left many shaken.

The trial is still pending in the Shillong court. While Sonam has been released, the other accused, including Raj Kushwaha, remain in jail. One report indicated that Raj’s bail plea is also under consideration.

Local authorities in Meghalaya have maintained that the investigation was thorough and the trial will proceed on merit. However, the victim’s family continues to allege possible lapses and wants a central agency to take over for a fair probe.

As the family prepares its legal challenge, the focus now shifts to the Meghalaya High Court. Whether the bail stands or is cancelled will be a crucial milestone in this high-profile case that continues to haunt both families nearly a year after the gruesome incident.

The gruesome details of the murder and the swift marriage-to-murder timeline have kept public interest alive. Many in Indore still remember Raja as a hardworking young entrepreneur whose life was cut short in the most unexpected manner.

With the appeal process underway, the coming days could see fresh arguments over evidence, procedural compliance, and the larger question of justice in a case that exposed both personal betrayal and alleged investigative shortcomings. The family remains determined to pursue every legal avenue available.
