AIIMS Bhopal IVF Facility Ready but Hits License Hurdle; Patients Wait

The long-standing wait for childless couples in Madhya Pradesh seeking affordable fertility treatment has hit another administrative roadblock. While the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhopal has completed the setup of the state’s first government-run In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) center, the facility remains non-functional as it awaits a mandatory operational license.

Despite the appointment of a specialized embryologist—the expert responsible for the delicate process of implanting embryos—and the installation of multi-crore equipment, the doors remain closed to the public. This delay comes nearly four years after the project was first announced in 2022, leaving thousands of hopeful parents in a state of limbo.

Administrative delays stall progress

The AIIMS management has confirmed that the application for the license has been submitted and is currently being processed. However, the timeline for the actual commencement of services remains vague. Sources within the hospital suggest that while the infrastructure is "battle-ready," the stringent norms of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act mean that every procedural box must be checked before the first patient is admitted.

Huge cost relief expected

Currently, the demand for IVF in Madhya Pradesh is at an all-time high, with approximately 10,000 couples opting for the procedure annually at private clinics. These private cycles often cost between ₹1.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh, a price point that remains out of reach for many. Once the AIIMS Bhopal IVF facility becomes operational, the cost is expected to drop significantly to a range of ₹50,000 to ₹75,000, making it accessible to the lower and middle-income groups.

State-of-the-art medical infrastructure

The central government has allocated a budget of approximately ₹20 crore to ensure the center is at par with international standards. Beyond routine IVF, the facility is equipped to handle:

• Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

• Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

• Embryo freezing and high-end incubation

• AI-based simulators for doctor training

The inclusion of a digital skill lab marks a first for the region, where doctors will use artificial intelligence to practice embryo transfers and hysteroscopy before performing them on patients.

Rising infertility in MP

The urgency for this center is underscored by a worrying trend in the state’s demographic health. Recent data from the Sample Registration System (SRS) indicates that the fertility rate in Madhya Pradesh has declined by 12.8% over the last decade. Health experts point toward changing lifestyles, delayed marriages, and rising cases of PCOS as primary factors driving the need for medical intervention.

Demographic shifts and outlook

Projections from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare suggest a tightening window for the state’s reproductive health. While the youth population (ages 20-29) currently stands at over 1.5 crore, it is expected to shrink by 2047, while the elderly population will nearly triple. This shift emphasizes the importance of providing timely fertility support to the current generation of young couples.

Strict regulations in place

Medical professionals at AIIMS noted that IVF success is heavily dependent on age, urging couples not to delay treatment. Under current Indian laws, the age limit for IVF is capped at 50 for women and 55 for men. Furthermore, new regulations restrict the transfer of more than two embryos at a time to ensure the health of both the mother and the newborns.

As the file for the AIIMS Bhopal IVF facility license moves through government corridors, the hospital remains optimistic that the stalemate will end shortly, finally providing a state-sponsored lifeline to those dreaming of parenthood.
