MP family returning from Vaishno Devi pilgrimage charred in horrific midnight blaze on expressway

In a devastating incident late on Wednesday night, five members of a family from Madhya Pradesh were burnt alive when their moving Ertiga car suddenly caught fire on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway near Maujpur in Alwar district. Only charred bones were recovered from the vehicle after the blaze was extinguished, police said.

The accident occurred around 11 pm within the jurisdiction of Laxmangarh police station. The family was returning home to Chainpura village in Sheopur district after fulfilling a vow at the Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir. The driver, who managed to jump out as the fire started, survived but is in critical condition and has been referred to a hospital in Jaipur.

According to initial reports, the victims included Santosh (35), his wife Shashi (30), his mother-in-law Parvati (55), and two minor children. The family had undertaken the pilgrimage after Parvati recovered from an illness, turning what should have been a journey of gratitude into an unimaginable tragedy.

Sudden Blaze Engulfs Vehicle

Locals who rushed to the spot said the car remained engulfed in flames for nearly 30 minutes, giving those trapped inside little chance to escape. The fire intensified rapidly, with officials suspecting the presence of CNG in the vehicle as a major factor that caused the blaze to spread quickly.

Alwar Additional Superintendent of Police Priyanka Raghuwanshi said information about the fire reached Laxmangarh police around 11:15 pm. Fire tenders arrived by 11:30 pm and took about 15 minutes to bring the flames under control. "The fire spread rapidly, possibly due to CNG, leaving the occupants with no time to escape," she noted.

Rescue teams found only bones inside the vehicle once the fire was doused. The remains were carefully collected in separate bundles, and DNA sampling will be conducted for formal identification.

Family's Pilgrimage Ends in Tragedy

The family had hired the vehicle for the long journey back from Vaishno Devi. Sources familiar with the matter said they were likely in a celebratory mood after completing the pilgrimage when the incident took place near the SSB Training Centre in Maujpur.

Police suspect a short circuit or possible CNG leak could have triggered the fire, though the exact cause will only be ascertained after questioning the injured driver and conducting a detailed forensic examination of the vehicle.

Traffic on the busy Delhi-Mumbai Expressway was disrupted for some time as authorities worked at the site. The expressway, which sees heavy movement of passenger and commercial vehicles, has witnessed several accidents in the past, though incidents of sudden vehicle fires remain relatively rare.

CNG Safety Concerns Resurface

The tragedy has once again brought into focus safety standards for CNG-fitted vehicles, especially on long highway journeys. Experts often point out that while CNG is environmentally friendlier, leaks combined with any electrical fault can lead to rapid combustion, leaving occupants with minimal reaction time.

Officials have urged motorists to ensure regular maintenance of gas kits and electrical systems, particularly before undertaking long-distance travel with family members.

Local residents expressed shock over the severity of the blaze. Many gathered near the site even as police and fire teams carried out their operations. The sight of the completely gutted Ertiga left a grim impression on those who witnessed the aftermath.

Investigation Underway

Senior police officials said a case has been registered and a detailed probe is on. Teams are examining the vehicle’s condition, possible mechanical issues, and the sequence of events leading to the fire. The injured driver remains the key witness, though his critical condition has delayed detailed questioning.

Authorities have also reached out to the families of the deceased in Sheopur to provide necessary assistance. The Madhya Pradesh government is likely to coordinate with Rajasthan authorities for the handover of remains once formalities are completed.

This incident comes as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that persist on India’s expanding expressway network despite improved infrastructure. Highway safety, vehicle maintenance, and emergency response readiness continue to demand attention from both authorities and travellers.

As investigations progress, officials hope to establish the precise trigger of the fire to prevent similar tragedies in the future. For now, a family’s joyous return from a sacred pilgrimage has ended in profound loss, leaving relatives and the village of Chainpura in mourning.
