Gujarat Titans (GT) secured a much-needed victory against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Thursday, chasing down a modest target of 156 with 25 balls to spare. Despite a mid-innings wobble caused by Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s disciplined three-wicket haul, the Titans stayed ahead of the curve, largely thanks to a blistering start provided by skipper Shubman Gill. Earlier in the evening, the Titans' bowling unit, led by Arshad Khan and Jason Holder, systematically dismantled the RCB batting lineup, restricting the defending champions to 155 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Titans bowlers dominate early

The Gujarat Titans made the most of their decision to bowl first on a dry Ahmedabad surface. While Virat Kohli looked dangerous early on, smacking Kagiso Rabada for five boundaries in a single over, the Titans didn't panic. Mohammed Siraj provided the first breakthrough by removing Jacob Bethell, and Rabada quickly redeemed himself by claiming the big wicket of Kohli for 28. RCB’s middle order failed to capitalize on the start, as GT’s pacers found enough movement to keep the batters guessing.

Middle order collapse hurts RCB

The momentum shifted drastically between the 8th and 14th overs. RCB lost wickets in heaps, including a controversial catch of Rajat Patidar by Jason Holder that left Kohli visibly upset on the sidelines. Arshad Khan was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/24, while Rashid Khan’s spin proved too much for Devdutt Padikkal, who top-scored with 40 but lacked any significant support. The defending champions eventually folded for 155, a score that felt at least 20-30 runs short on this venue.

Gill’s powerplay blitzkrieg

Chasing 156, Shubman Gill decided to take the game away from Bengaluru in the first few minutes. He took a particular liking to Josh Hazlewood, plundering 24 runs in the second over of the innings. Gill’s 43 off just 18 balls set a foundation so strong that even a later collapse didn't derail the chase. His aggressive approach forced the RCB bowlers to change their lengths, effectively breaking the back of the target within the powerplay itself.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar leads fightback

If there was any hope for RCB, it came through the veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He removed Sai Sudharsan early and then came back to clean up both Gill and Jos Buttler. Buttler, who looked set to finish the game quickly, was stunned by a delivery that shattered his leg stump. For a brief period, when Romario Shepherd picked up two wickets in the 11th over to leave GT five down, the Ahmedabad crowd sensed a potential thriller.

Tewatia finishes in style

Despite the pressure of falling wickets, Rahul Tewatia lived up to his reputation as a finisher. Coming in at a tense moment, he smashed a quick-fire 27 to calm the nerves in the GT dugout. Alongside Jason Holder, who contributed with a steady 12, Tewatia ensured there were no further hiccups. The Titans reached the target in the 16th over, earning two crucial points that keep their playoff aspirations alive.

Playoff race heats up

This win for Gujarat Titans serves as perfect revenge for their previous loss against Bengaluru this season. While RCB missed the chance to become the first team to reach 14 points, GT has now moved back into a position where they control their own destiny. With more home games scheduled at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the Titans will look to build on this momentum as the tournament enters its business end.
