A political row has erupted over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent community event in Melbourne after organisers rejected allegations by the Congress that attendees were paid to participate in the programme.

The controversy began after Congress leader Pawan Khera shared a video on social media claiming that thousands of people were allegedly hired and flown in through chartered flights to welcome Prime Minister Modi during the 'Melbourne Meets Modi' event held on July 9.

Responding to the allegations, the event organisers categorically denied any payment to attendees and described the claims as "false" and an insult to the Indian-Australian community. According to media reports, they have written to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi seeking a public apology and withdrawal of the statements.

Organisers Defend The Event

The organisers said the large-scale event, attended by nearly 30,000 members of the Indian diaspora, was funded independently by community organisations and volunteers. They clarified that neither the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Government of India nor the Australian Government financed the programme.

Addressing the issue of chartered flights, organisers said the travel arrangements were the result of months of planning, coordination and logistical preparation. They stated that volunteers spent significant time managing bookings, passenger coordination and administrative work, while many also contributed financially and sacrificed personal and professional commitments to ensure the event's success.

According to the organisers, arranging chartered flights was intended only to facilitate travel for community members and should not be interpreted as evidence that attendees were paid.

Congress Questions Crowd Mobilisation

The Congress has alleged that a large number of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) were brought to the event through paid arrangements. Pawan Khera claimed on social media that between 25,000 and 30,000 people attended after being financially compensated.

The organisers, however, rejected the allegation, stating that while political criticism of Prime Minister Modi or the BJP is part of democratic discourse, questioning the voluntary participation of the Indian diaspora unfairly undermines the community's independence and commitment.

PM Modi Addresses Indian Community

Prime Minister Modi addressed the Indian community in Melbourne during his two-day visit to Australia on July 9 and 10. During the programme, he praised India's growing global stature in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, defence and technology.

Referring to Operation Sindoor, the Prime Minister said India's defence capabilities had attracted worldwide attention, adding that the operation demonstrated the country's increasing military strength and credibility.

The event also witnessed a symbolic moment when attendees switched on their mobile phone flashlights at Modi's request as a gesture of appreciation for Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

India-Australia Partnership Expanded

During the visit, India and Australia announced agreements covering defence cooperation, trade, critical minerals, energy and space collaboration.

Among the key announcements was the decision to jointly develop a Critical Minerals Corridor, aimed at strengthening supply chains for strategic resources. The two countries also agreed to establish a space tracking terminal on Australia's Cocos (Keeling) Islands, which will support India's Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission.

The visit further strengthened the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Australia, with both governments reaffirming cooperation across economic, security and emerging technology sectors.

While the political controversy surrounding the Melbourne event continues, the organisers have maintained that the gathering reflected genuine participation by the Indian diaspora and have called for the allegations against the community to be withdrawn.

India and Canada have completed the third round of negotiations for the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), signalling renewed momentum in efforts to conclude a long-pending trade pact by the end of 2026. The five-day discussions, held in Ottawa from July 6 to July 10, focused on expanding bilateral economic cooperation and advancing an ambitious target of doubling two-way trade to $50 billion by 2030.

The latest round marks a significant step in rebuilding economic ties after two previous attempts to negotiate the agreement failed over the past decade, with the most recent collapse triggered by diplomatic tensions in 2023.

Third Attempt at a Trade Pact

India and Canada first launched CEPA negotiations in 2010, but years of discussions failed to produce an agreement. Talks were revived in 2022 before stalling again following a deterioration in diplomatic relations linked to allegations surrounding the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.

Relations began improving after Mark Carney assumed office as Canada's Prime Minister in 2025. The renewed political engagement culminated in both governments formally restarting CEPA negotiations in March 2026 after finalising the Terms of Reference for the proposed agreement.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Canada's International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu exchanged the negotiation framework in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Mark Carney, setting the roadmap for future discussions.

Wide Range of Issues on the Table

Officials said the latest negotiations covered several core chapters of the proposed agreement, including trade in goods and services, intellectual property rights, rules of origin, sanitary and phytosanitary standards, and technical barriers to trade.

Both sides reiterated their commitment to concluding a balanced and mutually beneficial agreement that would deepen market access and strengthen long-term commercial cooperation.

Trade Target Remains Ambitious

India and Canada have set a goal of raising bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030, more than doubling the current level.

Overall bilateral trade, including goods and services, stood at approximately $23.66 billion in 2024. However, merchandise trade remains relatively modest. During 2025-26, two-way goods trade declined by 8.22% to $7.95 billion from $8.66 billion in the previous financial year.

India's exports to Canada increased to $4.67 billion, while imports from Canada declined to $3.28 billion, reflecting an improvement in India's trade balance.

Analysts note that achieving the $50 billion target will require deeper market integration, diversified supply chains and expanded investment flows rather than tariff reductions alone.

Mutual Economic Opportunities

For India, Canada offers a high-income consumer market with strong demand for pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, electronics, chemicals, textiles, seafood and gems and jewellery. Indian IT and business services companies are also expected to benefit from improved market access under the proposed agreement.

Canada, meanwhile, is seeking greater opportunities in India's fast-growing economy, particularly in agriculture, energy, minerals, fertilisers, natural resources and investment.

The investment relationship is already substantial, with Canadian foreign direct investment in India exceeding $4 billion, while Canadian portfolio investments in Indian financial markets have crossed $75 billion.

The presence of more than 425,000 Indian students and a large Indian-origin community in Canada is also viewed as an important foundation for expanding economic ties.

Economics Meets Geopolitics

The renewed CEPA negotiations come as both countries seek to diversify their global trade partnerships. India has accelerated negotiations and concluded several trade agreements in recent years, while Canada is looking to reduce its dependence on the United States by strengthening commercial engagement with fast-growing markets.

Despite the positive momentum, negotiators still face complex discussions on agriculture, investment protection, intellectual property rights and regulatory standards.

Observers believe the success of the agreement will ultimately depend on whether both governments can sustain political goodwill and translate diplomatic progress into tangible commercial outcomes.

If concluded as planned, CEPA could become a cornerstone of a broader India-Canada economic partnership and significantly reshape bilateral trade over the coming decade.

India Expands Indo-Pacific Strategy Through Mandala Framework and Maritime Partnerships

India has strengthened its Indo-Pacific strategy by expanding strategic partnerships with Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, focusing on defence, maritime security and resilient supply chains.

India has stepped up its strategic engagement across the Indo-Pacific by deepening partnerships with South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, signalling a broader effort to strengthen regional cooperation, maritime security and resilient supply chains. The latest diplomatic outreach, spanning April to July, reflects New Delhi’s evolving Indo-Pacific strategy built around what analysts describe as a modern interpretation of Kautilya’s Mandala theory.

The diplomatic momentum included high-level bilateral engagements with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s multi-nation tour of Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. Together, these visits underline India’s focus on building a network of strategic partnerships with like-minded maritime democracies amid growing geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific.

Expanding the Indo-Pacific Vision

India’s approach seeks to reinforce cooperation through initiatives such as the Act East Policy, the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) and the MAHASAGAR vision. Rather than forming an exclusive military bloc, New Delhi aims to promote a rules-based, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific while expanding its strategic and economic space.

The strategy comes at a time when China’s growing regional influence has complicated India's neighbourhood dynamics, prompting New Delhi to strengthen ties with countries across the wider maritime region.

Indonesia Emerges as a Key Maritime Partner

Indonesia featured prominently during Prime Minister Modi’s recent diplomatic tour. Recognised as a strategic gateway between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Indonesia controls vital maritime routes through the Malacca, Sunda and Lombok Straits.

During the visit, India and Indonesia signed multiple agreements covering defence, maritime cooperation and trade. Indonesia agreed to acquire BrahMos cruise missiles and became the first international customer for India’s Astra Mk-1 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile system.

The two countries also expanded cooperation between their maritime agencies, strengthened information-sharing mechanisms and explored collaboration in developing Indonesia’s Sabang Port, located near one of the world's busiest shipping corridors.

Economic cooperation also advanced through agreements on rare-earth supply chains, steel manufacturing partnerships, digital payment connectivity and local currency settlement mechanisms.

Australia and New Zealand Deepen Strategic Cooperation

In Australia, the two countries concluded a Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation, alongside a Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap and agreements covering coast guard coordination and civil nuclear cooperation.

The partnership is expected to enhance defence interoperability, maritime surveillance and long-term energy cooperation, including Australian uranium exports to India.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to New Zealand, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in four decades, resulted in the elevation of bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership. Both nations adopted a Roadmap to 2030 and agreed to work towards doubling bilateral trade over the coming years.

The discussions also covered logistics, hydrography, maritime mapping and broader regional cooperation across the Indo-Pacific.

Japan and South Korea Reinforce Economic Security

Earlier diplomatic engagements with Japan and South Korea laid the foundation for the broader regional outreach.

India and Japan strengthened cooperation in defence technology, economic security, critical minerals and resilient supply chains. The two countries also agreed on their first defence co-development project involving naval communication systems.

Meanwhile, South Korea and India focused on expanding cooperation in advanced technologies, semiconductors and supply chain resilience, reflecting growing convergence on emerging economic and security priorities.

Strategic Balance in the Indo-Pacific

Analysts believe India’s expanding network of partnerships reflects an effort to create a balanced regional architecture rather than an alliance directed against any single country. By strengthening defence cooperation, promoting resilient supply chains and supporting freedom of navigation, India is seeking to reinforce stability across the Indo-Pacific.

The approach also supports greater diversification of trade, technology partnerships and maritime connectivity while encouraging cooperation among countries that share similar interests in maintaining an open and rules-based regional order.

As geopolitical competition intensifies across the Indo-Pacific, New Delhi’s recent diplomatic engagements indicate a long-term strategy centred on strategic partnerships, economic resilience and maritime cooperation, positioning India as an increasingly influential stakeholder in the region’s evolving security and economic landscape.

Veteran playback singer S. Janaki, one of India's most celebrated voices with a career spanning more than six decades and over 48,000 recorded songs, passed away on Saturday at the age of 88. She breathed her last at a private hospital in Mysuru after being admitted following a sudden deterioration in her health.

Her death marks the end of an extraordinary era in Indian film music. Widely revered across generations and languages, Janaki's unmatched contribution to Indian cinema earned her the status of one of the country's greatest playback singers.

Her final rites are scheduled to be held on Sunday evening at 5 pm at her ancestral farmhouse in H.D. Kote taluk near Mysuru, with state honours and traditional family rituals.

Health Declined Suddenly

According to family sources, Janaki's health worsened late on Friday after she developed breathing difficulties. She was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Mysuru, where doctors made extensive efforts to stabilise her condition. Despite medical treatment, she passed away on Saturday.

On Sunday morning, her mortal remains were placed at Maharaja Grounds in Mysuru to enable admirers, artists, public representatives and members of the public to pay their last respects. Thousands gathered to bid farewell to the legendary singer whose voice became synonymous with Indian cinema across multiple generations.

A Voice That Defined Indian Cinema

S. Janaki enjoyed one of the longest and most prolific careers in Indian music history, recording more than 48,000 songs in several Indian languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi.

She was admired for her remarkable versatility, effortlessly rendering romantic melodies, devotional hymns, classical compositions, folk songs and emotionally rich ballads with equal depth and expression.

Among her popular Hindi songs are "Bol Baby Bol," "Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re," "O Maria," "Prabhu More Avgun," and "Gopala Gopala." In South Indian cinema, she earned immense respect and affection, where fans fondly referred to her as "Janaki Amma."

Nation Pays Tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over her demise, describing her voice as one that beautifully conveyed every human emotion and touched millions of hearts.

President Droupadi Murmu also paid tribute, calling S. Janaki an invaluable treasure of Indian music whose legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

Condolences also poured in from political leaders, musicians and members of the film fraternity. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, superstar Rajinikanth, and several prominent artists remembered her as one of India's finest playback singers whose contribution to music remains unparalleled.

An Extraordinary Musical Journey

Born with exceptional musical talent, Janaki began her playback singing career in 1957, while her first Hindi song was recorded for the 1958 film Miss '58.

Over the next six decades, she became one of the busiest playback singers in Indian cinema, lending her voice to thousands of films and collaborating with almost every leading music composer of her time.

One of the most celebrated musical partnerships in Indian cinema was her long association with legendary singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam. Together, the duo recorded thousands of memorable duets that continue to remain favourites among music lovers.

Awards and Legacy

During her illustrious career, S. Janaki received four National Film Awards along with numerous state honours and lifetime achievement recognitions.

In 2013, she made headlines after declining the Padma Bhushan, stating that national recognition had come too late for many South Indian artists, including herself.

After remaining actively involved in playback singing for nearly six decades, she announced her retirement from recording new songs in 2017, saying she had fulfilled her musical journey and wished to step away from professional singing.

Personal Losses in Recent Years

The last few years of Janaki's life were marked by personal tragedy. Her husband, V. Ramprasad, passed away in 1997 following a heart attack. Earlier this year, in January 2026, she also lost her only son, Murali Krishna, to a heart attack.

Family members said the loss deeply affected her emotionally, and she had been facing health challenges since then.

Although S. Janaki's voice has now fallen silent, her timeless songs will continue to resonate across generations, ensuring that her extraordinary musical legacy remains an enduring part of India's cultural heritage.

MEA's 'Quintessential Indian Politician' Answer on Why Modi Skips Press Meets Draws Mockery

The question has now been asked on three different continents in two months, and the answer keeps coming back the same way — just with new phrasing each time.

At a media briefing in Auckland on Saturday, during the final leg of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's three-nation Indo-Pacific tour, a New Zealand journalist asked why Modi doesn't hold press conferences. MEA Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon's response has since taken over Indian social media: he called Modi a "quintessential Indian politician," said questioning the Prime Minister's political style "wouldn't be appropriate" for a civil servant, and pointed to Modi's electoral record — a third term in office — as evidence the approach works.

Tandon went further, arguing that India's electorate is "predominantly rural" and prefers direct contact over being "spoken to through intermediaries," calling Modi's use of rallies, social media and similar channels a communication style he has "perfected." He also noted the moment felt like "deja vu," referencing a near-identical exchange in Norway two months earlier, when Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng Svendsen asked Modi directly why he wouldn't take questions from "the freest press in the world" — a question Modi didn't answer before walking away. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal offered a shorter version of the same point separately: "The Prime Minister has his own style of communication."

The "quintessential" remark quickly became the story itself. Clips of the exchange spread across X within hours, with much of the reaction mocking the phrasing rather than engaging with Tandon's underlying argument — a pattern similar to what followed the Norway incident, where Indian broadcasters spent more airtime dissecting the confrontation than the trade agreements Modi's visit was meant to highlight. Word searches for the term "quintessential" reportedly spiked as viewers looked it up.

This marks the third time in two months a foreign journalist has raised the press-conference question with Modi or his officials during an overseas trip — after Norway in May and an incident in Melbourne in early July. Each time, officials have given a version of the same explanation: that Modi communicates differently, and by design.

Supporters of the government have made similar arguments before. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya has said press conferences are no longer the only legitimate channel for public communication, pointing to rallies, public meetings and social media as equally valid.

Critics see it differently. Modi has not held a formal press conference in the decade he's been Prime Minister, relying instead on scripted interviews and platforms like Mann Ki Baat where questions aren't put to him live. India's ranking on Reporters Without Borders' 2026 World Press Freedom Index — 157th out of 180 countries, down six places from the previous year and placed in the "very serious" category — has become a regular reference point in this recurring debate, cited by critics as evidence the pattern goes beyond personal style.

For now, neither the MEA nor the Prime Minister's Office has indicated any change is coming. The pattern from Norway, Melbourne and now Auckland suggests the question — and the answer — may simply resurface again on Modi's next foreign trip.

He noted that the two countries are celebrating 100 years of sporting ties this year and described the Auckland showcase as an opportunity to witness cutting-edge innovations shaping the future of sports.

According to the Prime Minister, the exhibition featured modern technologies and creative solutions that are transforming athletic performance, training and fan engagement. He said such innovations not only advance sports but also strengthen people-to-people connections between the two nations.

During the visit, Modi and Luxon interacted with several distinguished New Zealand athletes and stakeholders associated with high-performance sports programmes. Discussions focused on strengthening sporting collaboration and exploring new opportunities beyond traditional areas of engagement.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the two leaders acknowledged a century of sports cooperation between India and New Zealand and emphasised the importance of expanding partnerships into new disciplines. Prime Minister Modi highlighted the recently concluded Sports Joint Action Plan, describing it as a significant step towards broadening cooperation beyond cricket.

The ministry stated that the initiative aligns with the shared objective of enhancing sports exchanges and institutional collaboration at a time when India is preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Officials believe greater cooperation in sports science, athlete development and training can create long-term benefits for both countries.

A special gala lunch hosted by Prime Minister Luxon under the theme “India-New Zealand: A Winning Partnership” brought together leading personalities from politics, business, industry, education, technology, sports and the arts. The event served as a platform to celebrate the growing strategic relationship between the two nations.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi spoke about the complementary strengths of India and New Zealand and the strong people-to-people ties that have developed over decades. He welcomed the elevation of bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership and expressed confidence that the move would deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.

The Prime Minister also referred to the recently concluded India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA), stating that it would create fresh opportunities for businesses, farmers and young people in both countries. He said the agreement is expected to support the shared goal of doubling bilateral trade by 2030.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon highlighted the enduring relationship between the two countries and reiterated New Zealand’s commitment to expanding cooperation in trade, innovation, education and sports. He said both nations share a vision of strengthening economic growth and delivering greater prosperity for their people.

The Auckland events underscored the growing momentum in India-New Zealand relations, with sports emerging as an important pillar alongside trade, education and strategic cooperation.

Centre Directs States to Play Vande Mataram Before National Anthem at Official Events

The Central government has reissued guidelines directing states and ministries to play Vande Mataram before Jana Gana Mana at official functions and ensure strict adherence to the national protocol.

The Central government has once again directed all states, Union Territories and central ministries to strictly follow the prescribed protocol for playing and singing the National Song Vande Mataram and the National Anthem Jana Gana Mana during official functions. According to a communication issued on July 9, Vande Mataram must always precede Jana Gana Mana whenever both are performed at the same event.

The fresh advisory reiterates existing rules under the national protocol and asks authorities to ensure uniform implementation across the country. It is the second such directive issued within five months, following a similar order circulated on January 28.

The Ministry stated that the sequence of performances has already been defined under existing guidelines and must be followed consistently. States that also have an officially recognised state song have been instructed to ensure that the national protocol remains unchanged.

Strict adherence to official version

The Centre has directed all state governments, Union Territories and ministries to ensure that both the National Song and the National Anthem are performed using their original lyrics, proper pronunciation and officially approved versions.

To facilitate uniform implementation, the government has uploaded the authorised versions of both compositions on the Ministry's official website for public access and institutional use.

January order reiterated

The latest communication follows an earlier directive issued on January 28, which introduced several guidelines regarding the performance of Vande Mataram in educational institutions and official programmes.

Under those instructions:

Schools were advised to begin the day by playing Vande Mataram.

People were required to stand respectfully during the National Song.

All six stanzas of Vande Mataram, lasting approximately three minutes and ten seconds, were recommended instead of limiting performances to only the first two stanzas.

Cinema halls were kept outside the scope of the directive, meaning there is no requirement to play Vande Mataram before film screenings.

Audiences are also not required to stand if the National Song forms part of a documentary or newsreel.

Historical significance

Vande Mataram was composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay on November 7, 1875, and was later published in his novel Anandamath in 1882.

The song gained national prominence in 1896 when Rabindranath Tagore sang it during the Indian National Congress session. During India's freedom movement, Vande Mataram became one of the most powerful slogans of the struggle against British colonial rule.

The Sanskrit phrase translates to "I bow to thee, Mother," symbolising devotion to the motherland.

Featured in Republic Day celebrations

The National Song also featured prominently during the 77th Republic Day celebrations earlier this year. The Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path adopted "Vande Mataram" as its central theme, while the Ministry of Culture showcased a tableau commemorating 150 years of the iconic composition. The tableau later received the award for the best entry among ministries and departments.

Political debate continues

The National Song has remained a subject of political debate in recent years. During Parliament's Winter Session last year, discussions marking its 150th anniversary saw sharp exchanges between the ruling BJP and the Opposition.

The BJP accused previous Congress governments of diluting portions of the song, while Congress alleged that the issue was being raised for political reasons ahead of elections. The debate also included references to historical correspondence involving Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhas Chandra Bose regarding objections raised over certain portions of the song.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also referred to the issue during his address in the Lok Sabha, calling for greater respect towards Vande Mataram and its place in India's freedom movement.

With the latest directive, the Centre has reiterated that official programmes across the country must uniformly follow the prescribed sequence and protocol whenever both the National Song and the National Anthem are performed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Auckland on Friday for the final leg of his three-nation tour, where he was warmly received by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. The visit marks a significant milestone in India-New Zealand relations, with both countries expected to conclude negotiations on a long-awaited Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and expand cooperation across trade, investment and strategic sectors.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Luxon and senior members of the New Zealand government. The talks are expected to focus on strengthening economic ties, enhancing bilateral trade and deepening cooperation in areas including technology, agriculture, education, clean energy and regional security.

FTA Expected to Be Finalised

A key highlight of the visit is the expected signing of the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement. The proposed pact aims to improve market access, boost bilateral trade, encourage investment flows and create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.

Officials from both sides have been working on the agreement to expand economic engagement and remove barriers to trade, making it one of the most significant outcomes anticipated from the visit.

Business and Community Engagement

Apart from official meetings, Prime Minister Modi will participate in a business event aimed at strengthening commercial partnerships between Indian and New Zealand companies. He is also scheduled to attend a sporting event during his stay.

Later in the day, the Prime Minister will address nearly 40,000 members of the Indian diaspora at the "Kia Ora Modi" community programme in Auckland. The event has been organised by the Indian community to welcome the Prime Minister and celebrate the growing ties between the two nations.

The Indian diaspora in New Zealand is regarded as an important bridge in bilateral relations, contributing significantly to trade, education and cultural exchanges.

First Indian PM Visit in Four Decades

Prime Minister Modi's visit is being described as historic, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in around 40 years. The last Indian Prime Minister to visit the country was Rajiv Gandhi in 1986.

The visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to bilateral relations and open new avenues for cooperation in multiple sectors.

Australia Leg Focused on Strategic Partnerships

Before arriving in New Zealand, Prime Minister Modi concluded the Australian leg of his tour, where India and Australia announced a series of agreements covering defence, trade, critical minerals, space cooperation and energy.

Following talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne, the two leaders announced plans to jointly develop a Critical Minerals Corridor, while Australia also agreed to host a space tracking terminal on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands to support India's Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission.

The two countries also finalised a uranium cooperation agreement, further strengthening their strategic partnership.

Visit to Melbourne Cricket Ground

During his stay in Australia, Prime Minister Modi visited the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) alongside Prime Minister Albanese and former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh.

At the venue, Modi announced that the opening match of Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) this December would be played in Chennai, marking the first time the Australian domestic T20 league will stage a match in India.

The Prime Minister also addressed a gathering of nearly 30,000 members of the Indian community in Melbourne, where he highlighted the growing partnership between India and Australia and praised Australia's decision to restrict social media access for children below the age of 16.

With his arrival in Auckland, Prime Minister Modi now begins the final phase of his foreign tour, which is expected to focus on expanding India's engagement with New Zealand through stronger economic cooperation, strategic dialogue and people-to-people ties.

Australia Assures India of Continued Opportunities for Genuine Students Despite Stricter Visa Checks: Vikram Misri

Concerns surrounding Australia's student visa policies featured in discussions during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Australia, with Canberra assuring New Delhi that genuine Indian students will continue to have access to educational opportunities despite stricter scrutiny measures, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference in Melbourne, Misri said Indian authorities had raised concerns regarding recent changes in Australia's visa assessment process and reports of delays in the processing of student visa applications. The issue has attracted attention among Indian students planning higher education in Australia, one of the most popular overseas study destinations for Indian applicants.

Misri said the matter was discussed during interactions between Indian and Australian leaders throughout the day. According to him, both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties, which remain a key pillar of the India-Australia relationship.

He noted that Australian authorities acknowledged that certain visa verification procedures have become more rigorous than before. However, they also conveyed that the changes were intended to strengthen the integrity of the system and would not reduce opportunities for genuine and qualified students from India.

The Foreign Secretary also dismissed speculation that Australia was considering a halt on new student visa applications from Indian applicants. Referring to reports circulating on various platforms, Misri said there was no indication that such restrictions were being planned.

According to him, Australia has reassured India that legitimate students seeking higher education in Australian institutions will continue to be welcomed and that access to educational opportunities will remain open and fair.

The issue comes at a time when educational cooperation has emerged as a major component of bilateral engagement between the two countries. Australia hosts a large Indian student population, with thousands of students enrolling each year in universities and vocational institutions across the country.

Misri said India remains confident that Australia will continue to provide a transparent and accessible environment for students pursuing academic and professional goals abroad. He added that student mobility and academic exchanges are important elements of the broader strategic partnership between the two nations.

The remarks came as Prime Minister Modi participated in the “Melbourne Meets Modi” community event during his visit. The programme highlighted the growing contribution of the Indian diaspora to Australian society and the deepening ties between the two countries.

Speaking at the event, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised the Indian community for its role in Australia's economic and social development. He said Indian-origin professionals have helped address skill shortages in critical sectors such as healthcare and information technology while also contributing to entrepreneurship and innovation.

Albanese also acknowledged the contribution of Indian students to Australia's education sector. He said many students from India continue to choose Australia as a destination for higher studies and long-term career development, particularly in the state of Victoria.

Education has become one of the strongest links between India and Australia in recent years, alongside trade, technology, defence cooperation and people-to-people exchanges. The assurances provided during the visit are expected to offer clarity to prospective students and their families amid concerns over changing visa procedures.

Further details regarding any future policy adjustments are awaited, but both governments have indicated that educational engagement will remain an important area of cooperation in the years ahead.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where he joined Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan to launch the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap, a new initiative aimed at expanding sporting ties between the two nations.

The announcement marked a significant step in the growing strategic partnership between India and Australia, with both countries seeking deeper engagement in sports development, athlete training and sports-related industries.

The roadmap is designed to strengthen cooperation across multiple areas, including sports training and capacity building, sports science and technology, sports infrastructure, investment opportunities and industry partnerships. It also proposes the organisation of an India-Australia Youth Sports Festival to encourage greater interaction between young athletes from both countries.

The launch event at the MCG brought together sports personalities, officials and community representatives. Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh and former Australia women’s cricketer Lisa Sthalekar were among the prominent sporting figures present on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Modi described sports as a powerful force that brings people together beyond geographical and cultural boundaries. He said the new roadmap would help make sporting cooperation between India and Australia broader, stronger and more diverse in the years ahead.

The Prime Minister also congratulated Australia on its recent success in women’s cricket, highlighting the role of sporting excellence in strengthening mutual respect and collaboration between nations.

The initiative comes at a time when India and Australia are increasingly expanding their partnership beyond traditional sectors such as trade, defence and education. Officials from both countries view sports as an important pillar of people-to-people engagement and cultural exchange.

During his address, Modi said the two countries were entering a significant decade for international sport. He pointed to India's preparations to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and Australia's ongoing work ahead of the Brisbane Olympics in 2032.

According to the Prime Minister, these major sporting events will create fresh opportunities for collaboration in athlete development, sports management, infrastructure planning, technology and related industries. He noted that the growing scale of international sporting competitions requires nations to share expertise and work together more closely.

The leaders also interacted with young athletes participating in exhibition events featuring cricket, kabaddi and Australian rules football. The interaction highlighted the roadmap’s focus on youth engagement and grassroots sports development.

Players had the opportunity to meet both prime ministers, discuss their sporting journeys and showcase their skills. Organisers said such exchanges could help strengthen long-term sporting links between future generations in India and Australia.

The MCG visit carried symbolic significance as well. The stadium has hosted several memorable India-Australia cricket contests over the decades and remains one of the most recognisable sporting venues in the world. The launch of the roadmap at the historic ground reflected the central role sport continues to play in bilateral relations.

Officials from both countries welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important framework for future cooperation. Beyond elite competition, the roadmap is expected to encourage collaboration in coaching, sports medicine, innovation, event management and talent identification.

PM Modi Launches India-Australia Sports Roadmap, Says Partnership Will Expand Beyond Cricket

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during the final day of his Australia tour, where he joined Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to launch the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap aimed at deepening sporting ties between the two countries.

The visit brought together young athletes, sports administrators and former sporting greats at one of cricket’s most celebrated venues. Modi’s interaction with emerging players highlighted the growing emphasis both nations are placing on sports development and people-to-people engagement.

Young athletes gathered at the MCG enthusiastically welcomed the Indian Prime Minister, with several taking photographs and seeking autographs. Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh was also present during the event and met both leaders.

Addressing the gathering, Modi said the Melbourne Cricket Ground evokes special memories for Indians because of the rich history of India-Australia cricket contests. He noted that cricket remains a shared passion connecting millions of people in both countries.

However, the Prime Minister stressed that future cooperation would not remain limited to cricket alone.

According to the roadmap unveiled by the two leaders, India and Australia will work together across a wider range of sporting disciplines. Areas identified for cooperation include athlete development, sports science, coaching, sports technology, sports management and talent identification.

Modi said he had the opportunity to interact with young athletes involved in cricket, kabaddi and Australian rules football, describing sports as an effective bridge between societies.

The initiative comes at a time when both countries are seeking to expand cooperation beyond traditional sectors such as trade, defence and education. Sports has increasingly emerged as an important component of bilateral engagement, supported by strong people-to-people connections and a large Indian diaspora presence in Australia.

During his remarks, the Prime Minister also highlighted India's efforts to strengthen its sporting ecosystem through programmes such as Khelo India. He said the initiative has opened opportunities for talented athletes from smaller towns, villages and ordinary families to pursue competitive sports at higher levels.

India's ambitions in global sport also featured prominently in the discussion. Modi reiterated India's intention to host the 2036 Olympic Games, while noting that Brisbane will host the 2032 Olympics. He said major international sporting events create opportunities for nations to collaborate in infrastructure development, athlete training and knowledge sharing.

The Prime Minister also referred to women's cricket and conveyed his best wishes to the Australian women's team. Looking ahead, he said sporting exchanges between India and Australia would continue to grow as both countries learn from each other's experiences.

In a notable announcement, Modi said a match of Australia's Big Bash League would be staged in Chennai, reflecting the growing commercial and sporting links between the two cricket-loving nations. He observed that sporting events held in India benefit from significant audience reach and fan engagement. The launch of the sports collaboration roadmap adds another dimension to the expanding India-Australia relationship, which has seen increasing cooperation across multiple sectors in recent years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a gathering of nearly 30,000 members of the Indian diaspora in Melbourne on Thursday during his official visit to Australia, describing his third visit to the country in 12 years as a "hat-trick" while highlighting the growing strategic partnership between India and Australia.

The event, attended alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, celebrated the deepening people-to-people ties between the two nations. National anthems of both countries were played before the leaders addressed the gathering.

Speaking to the audience, Modi recalled his landmark 2014 visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Australia in 28 years. "When I visited Australia in 2014, I had said you would not have to wait another 28 years. This is my third visit in the last 12 years—a hat-trick of visits," he said, drawing applause from the crowd.

India, Australia Sign Key Agreements

The visit also marked a significant milestone in bilateral relations, with India and Australia announcing agreements across several strategic sectors, including defence, trade, energy, space, and critical minerals.

One of the major announcements was Australia's decision to begin supplying uranium to India, a move expected to support India's clean energy programme and long-term nuclear power expansion.

The two countries also agreed to jointly develop a Critical Minerals Corridor, aimed at strengthening supply chains for minerals essential to emerging technologies and clean energy.

In the space sector, both sides announced plans to establish a space tracking terminal on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, which will support India's ambitious Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission.

Focus on Energy and Investment

Addressing business leaders and the Indian community, Modi said India and Australia are emerging as trusted partners amid global geopolitical and energy challenges.

He reiterated India's target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and 100 GW of nuclear power generation by 2047, noting that Australian uranium and advanced technologies would contribute significantly to these goals.

The Prime Minister also invited Australian businesses to invest in India's rapidly expanding infrastructure sector, including ports, airports, highways, railways, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data centres and digital technologies.

He said India's exports to Australia have doubled since the implementation of the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) and expressed confidence that negotiations for a comprehensive trade agreement would be concluded soon.

Cricket Analogy Draws Cheers

Using a cricket analogy familiar to audiences in both countries, Modi described India-Australia relations as a perfect blend of all formats of the game.

"Our meetings have the focus of a One-Day International, decisions are taken with the speed of a T20 match, and our partnership is as strong and enduring as a Test match," he said.

The remarks received enthusiastic applause from the diaspora gathering.

Education and Sports Collaboration

The Prime Minister also highlighted the growing educational partnership between the two nations.

He noted that thousands of Indian students are pursuing higher education in Australia and pointed out that Australian institutions, including Deakin University and the University of Wollongong, have already established campuses in India. He added that several other Australian universities are preparing to expand their presence in the country.

Modi also said sports continue to strengthen ties between India and Australia, while reaffirming India's ambition to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and bid for the 2036 Olympic Games.

Warm Community Welcome

Earlier in the day, Modi met Victoria Governor Margaret Gardner at Government House, where he was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour. He also participated in the Australia-India CEO Forum before attending the community event.

Members of the Indian diaspora welcomed the Prime Minister with cultural performances, including Kathak dance and a fusion performance featuring renowned didgeridoo artist Ron Murray and tabla player Dr. Sam Evans.

Sharing photographs from the event on social media, Modi described the cultural welcome as a reflection of the vibrant bond between India and Australia.

The visit underscores the expanding strategic, economic and cultural partnership between the two Indo-Pacific democracies, with both governments signalling their commitment to strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors in the coming years.
