Monsoon activity remained strong across Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday, with rainfall recorded in more than 35 districts over the past 24 hours. Khajuraho and Mandla received the highest rainfall at 4.2 inches each, while continuous showers over the past six days have significantly narrowed the state's seasonal rainfall deficit.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state's average rainfall has now reached nearly 7 inches. Until the end of June, Madhya Pradesh was witnessing a 33% rainfall deficit, but persistent monsoon activity has improved the situation, reducing the shortfall to just 1% below normal.

Heavy Rain Across Several Districts

Widespread rainfall was reported from Satna, Ratlam, Sidhi, Umaria, Panna, Pachmarhi, Rewa, Sheopur, Nowgong, Bhopal, Narsinghpur, Damoh, Tikamgarh, Betul, Narmadapuram, Indore, Seoni, Sagar, Shivpuri, Balaghat, Chhindwara, Raisen, Dhar, Jabalpur, Guna, Ujjain, Khandwa, Khargone, Datia, Maihar, Shajapur, Sehore, Chhatarpur, Burhanpur, Barwani and Pandhurna.

The widespread showers have brought relief from heat and humidity in many parts of the state while improving water availability for agriculture.

Rain Triggers Local Incidents

Heavy rain also disrupted normal life in several districts.

In Sendhwa of Barwani district, plaster from the roof of a Class IX classroom at Sandipani (CM Rise) School collapsed during school hours, leaving two students with minor head injuries. Both were admitted to the local Civil Hospital for treatment and are reported to be out of danger. Authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Meanwhile, near Jetkaran village on the Khudel Road in Indore district, a road caved in following continuous rainfall, making it difficult for schoolchildren to reach their destination. Villagers formed a human chain to safely help children cross a swollen stream, and a video of the rescue effort has surfaced on social media.

Orange Alert for Extremely Heavy Rain

The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Guna, Ashok Nagar, Vidisha, Sagar and Chhatarpur, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas.

Heavy rainfall is also expected in Barwani, Dhar, Burhanpur, Ratlam, Tikamgarh and Panna, along with thunderstorms and lightning in several districts.

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, avoid rivers, overflowing drains and waterlogged roads, and follow weather advisories issued by the administration.

Waterlogging Reported in Several Areas

The continuing rainfall has resulted in waterlogging at multiple locations across the state.

In Panna, rainwater entered the surgical and maternity wards of the district hospital, affecting normal operations. In Raisen district, nearly 60 students studying at a Sanskrit school in Bapauli Dham Ashram were safely evacuated after heavy rainfall caused floodwater to enter the campus. Water also entered parts of the temple complex and cowshed within the ashram premises.

Farmers Welcome Rain, Seek Continued Showers

While the rainfall has caused localized disruptions, farmers in several districts have welcomed the improved monsoon activity. In Dhar, where around 238.8 mm (9.4 inches) of rainfall has been recorded so far this season, farmers said the showers have benefited soybean sowing but emphasized that consistent rainfall over the coming weeks will be essential for healthy Kharif crop growth.

Weather officials expect monsoon activity to continue across several parts of Madhya Pradesh over the next few days, with authorities maintaining close watch on vulnerable low-lying areas and river catchments.

A farmer in Barwani was hospitalised on Friday after his banana plantation spread across nine acres was flattened by severe winds and rain, even as over 200 farmers in neighbouring Khargone blocked the Khandwa–Baroda Highway demanding canal water. With the monsoon running nearly 10 days late, Madhya Pradesh is staring at a deepening farm crisis just as the Kharif sowing season gets underway.

The state has recorded a 39% rainfall deficit so far this season, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). While scattered thunderstorms have brought some relief to parts of western MP, the absence of widespread rain has left fields parched and farmers anxious.

Barwani: ₹36 lakh loss, farmer's health deteriorates

In Khadki village of Barwani district, brothers Ambaram and Gangaram watched helplessly as their ready-to-harvest banana crop was flattened by strong winds accompanied by unseasonal rain. Around 1,500 banana plants were destroyed.

The brothers had invested nearly ₹14 lakh in the plantation and estimate their total losses at approximately ₹36 lakh. Ambaram's health deteriorated sharply after the crop was destroyed, forcing his family to rush him to the Rajpur Health Centre.

The family has urged the district administration to conduct an immediate damage assessment and provide compensation.

Khargone: Farmers block highway, bullock carts parked on road

In Khargone district, the delayed monsoon has dried up the Veda, Kunda and Kharak rivers, worsening the water crisis for agriculture. On Friday morning, more than 200 farmers parked bullock carts across the Khandwa–Baroda Highway around 11:30 am, blocking traffic for several hours. Long queues of vehicles formed on both sides as protesters demanded the release of canal water for irrigation. Officials said they were attempting to pacify the agitators while assessing the situation.

Sowing delayed as soil moisture remains inadequate

The absence of adequate rainfall has significantly delayed the sowing of key Kharif crops, including soybean, urad, moong and tur. S.S. Dhakad, Senior Scientist at the Shajapur Krishi Vigyan Kendra, said fields require at least 100 mm (4 inches) of rainfall to achieve sufficient soil moisture for sowing.

He warned that in districts where farmers have already sown soybean despite inadequate rainfall, seeds may fail or deteriorate due to insufficient moisture. "Farmers should wait for adequate rains before planting," he advised.

IMD predicts monsoon entry by June 25; 39 districts under alert

Meteorologist said a cyclonic circulation and three active trough lines over western Madhya Pradesh are triggering thunderstorms and scattered rainfall across parts of the state. Light showers accompanied by thunder and lightning are likely in districts including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Raisen, Sehore, Vidisha, Guna, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Chhindwara, Seoni, Sagar, Panna, Chhatarpur and Niwari.

Hot weather conditions, however, continue to prevail in Satna, Rewa, Mauganj, Sidhi, Singrauli, Maihar, Katni, Umaria, Khandwa, Khargone and Jhabua.

Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast that the monsoon is expected to enter Madhya Pradesh around June 25, nearly 10 days later than usual. Further updates on the progress of the monsoon are awaited.

Why this matters

The delayed monsoon comes at a critical time for Madhya Pradesh's agrarian economy. With the state heavily dependent on the Kharif season for its agricultural output, any further delay could impact food production and farmer incomes. The Congress-led opposition has criticised the state government's handling of the situation, while the BJP administration has directed district collectors to remain on alert.

A sudden shift in weather patterns has brought widespread rainfall and gusty winds to several districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Dhar, Barwani, and Jhabua, early Tuesday morning. The change in atmospheric conditions has led to a significant dip in mercury, providing much-needed respite to citizens who had been reeling under a severe heatwave.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 39 districts across the state, warning of thunderstorms and lightning. According to the Bhopal Meteorological Centre, winds are expected to clock speeds between 40 and 60 kmph in affected areas. This unsettled weather activity is forecasted to persist until May 8.

Regional rainfall and temperature dip

The southern and western belts of the state witnessed a sharp turnaround on Tuesday. In Dhar district, heavy showers lasted for nearly 20 minutes in areas like Kukshi and Tanda. Local residents reported a dramatic cooling effect as temperatures, which were hovering around 43°C last week, plummeted to approximately 23°C during the rain.

Similar reports emerged from Barwani, where consistent rainfall since 10:00 AM resulted in a 3-degree Celsius drop in the local temperature. Meanwhile, Gwalior and parts of the Rajgarh-Barmandal area experienced light drizzles and overcast skies, which significantly lowered the humidity-driven discomfort.

Cyclonic circulation triggers activity

Meteorologists attribute this pre-monsoon activity to a combination of multiple weather systems. "A cyclonic circulation is currently active over the region, and two trough lines are passing in close proximity," an official from the IMD stated. This convergence of moisture-laden winds has created unstable conditions, leading to hailstorms in isolated pockets on Monday and heavy rain on Tuesday.

The high-velocity winds are expected to be most intense in the eastern parts of the state, specifically in Jabalpur, Rewa, and Shahdol divisions. Local authorities have advised people to stay indoors during thunder activity to avoid risks associated with lightning strikes.

Impact on agricultural procurement

While the rain has brought down temperatures, it has triggered concerns for the farming community. In Jhabua, the sudden downpour caught farmers at wheat procurement centers off guard. Large quantities of harvested grain kept in the open at these centers are at risk of getting soaked.

Farmers at several centers expressed frustration over the lack of adequate tarpaulins and storage facilities. "We are rushing to cover the produce, but the wind is making it difficult. If the grain gets damp, it will be rejected at the procurement gates," a local farmer in Jhabua said. District administrations have since been alerted to expedite the movement of grain to warehouses.

Forecast for the week

The weather department indicates that the spell is far from over. Showers are likely to continue in Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and Jabalpur divisions over the next 48 hours. Districts such as Chhindwara, Seoni, and Balaghat are also expected to see lightning and moderate rainfall.

As the state braces for more turbulence, the IMD has urged commuters to be cautious of falling trees or branches due to the high-speed winds. The current system is expected to weaken gradually after May 8, after which temperatures may begin to climb again.
