Fourteen Accused from Bhopal’s Irani Gang Walk Free on Fake Bail, Deceased Shown as Guarantors

Fourteen alleged members of the Irani gang, arrested during a high-risk police operation in Bhopal’s Aman Colony, were released from jail within 48 hours after securing bail on the basis of forged surety documents, exposing serious lapses in the verification process of the police and prosecution.

The accused were among those detained during a pre-dawn raid conducted on December 27–28 at the Iranian camp in Aman Colony, an area identified by police as a shelter for habitual offenders wanted in multiple states. Despite being booked under serious sections, their detention proved brief after courts accepted bail applications backed by guarantors who were later found to be deceased.

According to official records, the police operation was carried out around 4 am after months of surveillance. Acting on intelligence inputs, teams raided the settlement amid strong resistance. Officers faced stone-pelting, physical assaults, and attempts to obstruct arrests. The situation turned volatile, but police managed to detain 22 men and 10 women from the spot.

Cases were registered against all the accused under sections related to rioting, obstruction of government servants, assault, vandalism, and organized criminal activity. Police files indicate that several of those arrested have prior involvement in theft, robbery, and fraud cases reported from different cities and states.

The controversy surfaced during bail proceedings held earlier this week. On January 5, bail applications for 10 accused were moved before a Bhopal court. A person identified as Jameel Rahman Khan was produced as the guarantor, along with land ownership documents submitted as proof of surety. Subsequent verification revealed that the real Jameel Rahman Khan had died nearly two years ago. Investigators found that a proxy had appeared in court under the same name, enabling the accused to secure bail.

The following day, on January 6, four more accused were released after another guarantor was produced using similar questionable documentation. In total, 14 accused walked out of jail in two days, raising concerns over how forged identities and documents passed scrutiny during court proceedings.

Legal experts and former officers said the case highlights systemic weaknesses in surety verification and coordination between police and prosecution. Officials acknowledged that an internal inquiry has been initiated to determine how deceased persons were shown as guarantors and whether there was negligence or collusion at any level.

The episode has renewed calls for stricter verification of bail sureties, particularly in cases involving organized crime and repeat offenders. Authorities are expected to submit a detailed report to senior officials, while further legal action may follow if fraud in court proceedings is established.
