Pooran, Marsh propel LSG early

Earlier in the evening, the Lucknow Super Giants looked on track for a total well beyond 250. After being put in to bat, Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran took advantage of a flat Wankhede deck. Pooran was particularly destructive, reaching his half-century in just 16 balls.

The pair added 141 runs in the first ten overs, leaving the Mumbai bowlers searching for answers. Pooran’s 63 included eight towering sixes, mostly targeted at the short square boundaries. However, as has been the story of their season, LSG failed to capitalize on a golden start.

Mumbai’s disciplined death bowling comeback

From 141/1 at the ten-over mark, LSG were restricted to 228/5, a total that seemed sub-par given the trajectory they were on. Corbin Bosch was the pick of the bowlers for MI, picking up crucial wickets of both set batters, Marsh and Pooran, in a single over.

Even with Jasprit Bumrah having a rare off-day—conceding 45 runs and bowling multiple no-balls—the supporting cast of Allah Ghazanfar and Will Jacks applied the brakes. The final five overs yielded significantly fewer runs than LSG anticipated, a shift in momentum that proved decisive.

Playoff math and LSG’s slump

This victory takes MI to their third win of the season, and while they remain in the lower half of the table, the manner of this win will boost their net run rate. For Rishabh Pant’s LSG, the situation is now dire. Rooted to the bottom of the points table, the team appears to be struggling for confidence despite individual flashes of brilliance.

"We were definitely 15-20 runs short," a disappointed Rishabh Pant noted after the match. "The way we started, we had the edge, but you can't blame the bowlers on a wicket like this."

Looking ahead to future fixtures

Mumbai Indians will now look to carry this momentum into their next fixture against the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), on May 10. For Lucknow, the road doesn't get any easier as they face the same opponent on May 7. Both teams are now entering a territory where every match is a virtual knockout, but for tonight, the Wankhede belongs to the blue and gold.
