Indian U-18 Hockey Teams Named for Australia Series in Bhopal

Ketan Kushwaha and Sweety Kujur to lead squads as young teams seek crucial exposure ahead of U-18 Asia Cup 2026

Hockey India on Thursday announced the 24-member squads for the Indian U-18 Men’s and Women’s teams, set to face Australia in a four-match series at the Udhav Das Mehta (Bhai Ji) SAI Central Centre in Bhopal from May 15 to 20.

The series comes as the final major assignment before both teams travel to Kakamigahara, Japan, for the Men’s and Women’s U-18 Asia Cup, scheduled from May 29 to June 6. 

Squad Finalised After Intense Camp

The squads were trimmed from an initial group of 42 players following a week-long National Coaching Camp. Selectors focused on match fitness, tactical awareness, and the ability to perform under pressure. 

Forward Ketan Kushwaha was named captain of the Men’s team, while Sweety Kujur will lead the Women’s side. Both players are seen as experienced campaigners within the junior setup and bring leadership qualities valued by the coaching staff.

Men’s Team Under Sardar Singh’s GuidanceThe Men’s Sub-Junior team will be guided by former India international Sardar Singh alongside coach Rajnish Mishra. Speaking after the announcement, Sardar Singh highlighted the importance of the upcoming matches.

“After a productive week in the camp, we have identified the 24 players whom we believe are ready for international exposure,” he said. “These matches against Australia are not just practice games; they are a vital test of our match temperament and tactical discipline. Ketan is a natural leader on the pitch, and I am keen to see how this group handles the pace and pressure of the Australian style before we head to the U-18 Asia Cup in Japan.”

Women’s Team Prepares Under Rani’s Mentorship

The Women’s team continues its preparation under the mentorship of former Indian captain Rani. She expressed confidence in the selected group and the leadership of Sweety Kujur.

“We have pruned the squad to 24 players who have shown the greatest consistency and growth during the camp,” Rani noted. “Sweety has the experience and vision required to lead this young side effectively. Playing four matches against a top-tier side like Australia in Bhopal will give us a clear picture of our strengths and the areas that need adjustment. This series is the ultimate dress rehearsal for the girls before the Asia Cup.”

Bhopal to Host High-Intensity Clashes
