Dropped catches, early batting collapse cost Punjab dearly in 236-run chase

Sunrisers Hyderabad delivered a masterclass in clinical cricket to dethrone Punjab Kings and claim pole position in the IPL 2026 points table. A 33-run victory at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad wasn't merely about superior execution—it exposed the cracks that have begun to show in Punjab's armour following back-to-back losses.

What began as a promising evening for Shreyas Iyer's side quickly unraveled. PBKS lost their way in the powerplay, surrendering three wickets for 29 runs in just 3.2 overs. The damage, however, had been set up hours earlier when SRH's batters were given multiple reprieves in the first innings.

A masterclass in punishing lapses

SRH's opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head seized the initiative, racing to 54 off 3.2 overs before Ferguson broke the partnership. But it was the middle order that truly made Punjab pay for their fielding negligence. Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen, both dropped early, went on to notch consecutive half-centuries as SRH amassed 235 for four.

The details were damning. Shashank Singh dropped Klaasen when the batter was on single digits—the catch rolling away for four. Connolly fumbled a straightforward chance at Kishan on nine. Ferguson failed to complete another catch at deep backward square leg in the 11th over. Even Prabhsimran Singh missed a crucial stumping opportunity on the final ball of the same over.

By the time Arshdeep Singh finally removed Kishan for 55 off 35 balls, the damage was done. Kishan had slammed a 28-ball fifty with a hat-trick of boundaries in the middle overs. Klaasen's 32-ball half-century came off the back of those dropped chances, and he departed for 69 only on the last ball of the innings while attempting another maximum.

Nitish Reddy's unbeaten 28 off 12 balls added the final flourish to SRH's 236-run target.

Connolly's defiance proves futile

Chasing in Hyderabad proved a different proposition entirely. Pat Cummins' captaincy was spot on from the opening ball. His bowlers executed their plans with precision, starting with aggressive short-pitched bowling that unsettled the Punjab top order.

Priyansh Arya fell to a hook that Eshan Malinga caught in the deep on the final delivery of the first over. Prabhsimran Singh's drive on the second delivery resulted in a simple catch for Cummins in the covers. Shreyas Iyer, who had fought hard earlier in the evening, departed for five attempting an inside-out drive off Cummins' off-cutter.

PBKS found themselves staring down the barrel at 29 for three. Marcus Stoinis provided brief resistance with 28 off 14 balls before getting an edge to Shivang Kumar's googly. The procession continued as partnerships crumbled—a 47-run stand between Suryansh Shedge and Connolly lasted just 17 balls before Shedge fell for 25.

Cooper Connolly, however, refused to surrender. The Australian batter hammered a 59-ball 107 not out, becoming the youngest overseas player to score a maiden IPL century. His fearless strokeplay against the spinners, particularly Yuzvendra Chahal, provided some respectability to the scorecard. Yet it was too little, coming far too late.

When Marco Jansen departed for 19 off Shivang Kumar in the 19th over, the result was effectively sealed. PBKS could manage only 202 for seven—a shortfall that reflected the chasm between the two teams' execution across all departments.

Cummins' all-round show earns plaudits

Cummins' two-wicket haul complemented a commanding captain's knock with the bat earlier. The Australian's tactical acumen shone brightest in the powerplay, where SRH's bowlers maintained discipline while being proactive with field placements and bowling changes. His Player of the Match award encompassed more than just his individual contributions—it recognised his leadership at a critical juncture in SRH's campaign.

Eshan Malinga's accuracy continued to trouble opposition batters. The speedster's 15 wickets from 10 matches have him firmly in the Purple Cap conversation. Shivang Kumar's googlies proved effective against left-handers in the middle and death overs.

For PBKS, the loss marked a third setback in their last four matches—a dramatic reversal for a team that seemed invincible just a week ago. Iyer acknowledged the team's shortcomings in his post-match chat, focusing particularly on the dropped catches that proved decisive.

"We dropped many catches at the start. We could have easily delayed their score by 30 to 40 runs," he said, pointing to the altered equation that such opportunities would have created on a pitch that slowed as the innings progressed.
