Heavy rain in Rewa triggered waterlogging in several localities, with drain water entering homes and damaging books, furniture and household belongings.

Drain Water Inside Homes

A few hours of rainfall at the beginning of May have once again exposed civic shortcomings in Rewa, where several residential areas witnessed severe waterlogging and overflowing drains. Residents said dirty drain water entered homes in multiple localities, disrupting daily life and raising concerns over the preparedness of the municipal administration ahead of the monsoon season.

According to local residents, the situation deteriorated quickly after rainfall on Wednesday evening, with stagnant water accumulating on roads and inside low-lying houses. People were seen manually clearing water from their homes as drainage systems failed to cope with the flow.

Elderly Man Cleans House

Among the worst affected families was that of local resident Anant Mishra, who alleged that poor drainage maintenance forced his 71-year-old ailing father to clean sewage water from inside the house.

He said the family had been struggling since morning as drain water continued to enter their home. Mishra also claimed that the situation had become especially difficult for his family because of his four-month-old child.

Residents in the area said cooking and carrying out routine activities became nearly impossible due to the foul-smelling water standing inside houses for hours.

Books, Belongings Damaged

Waterlogging also affected students and working families. Another resident, Adarsh Shukla, said rainwater entering his house damaged books and several household items.

Locals claimed that similar scenes are witnessed almost every year during heavy rainfall, but no long-term solution has been implemented so far. Some residents said blocked drains and delayed cleaning work have repeatedly worsened flooding during even moderate rain.

Several families spent hours removing water and shifting furniture and electrical appliances to safer places. In some areas, narrow lanes remained partially submerged late into the night.

Questions Over Drain Cleaning

The incident has triggered fresh criticism of the municipal corporation’s pre-monsoon preparedness. Residents directly blamed the civic body for not cleaning drains and nullahs before the rainy spell.

Initial reports indicate that many drains were either clogged with garbage or unable to handle the sudden flow of water. Citizens said repeated complaints over drainage issues had failed to bring lasting relief.

The rainfall may not have been prolonged, but the speed with which water entered residential areas has again highlighted the fragile drainage network in parts of the city.

Civic Body Responds

Responding to the complaints, officials of the Rewa Municipal Corporation said teams were being deployed to waterlogged areas.

The municipal commissioner stated that information was being collected from affected localities and drainage clearance work had already begun in several spots. According to officials, cleaning of major drains ahead of the monsoon is underway and additional staff have been instructed to monitor vulnerable zones.

Authorities also said pumping and water discharge work would continue in areas where flooding persists.

Monsoon Concerns Return

The latest spell of rain has revived memories of last year’s flood-like situation in parts of Rewa, when prolonged rainfall had disrupted traffic and affected residential colonies. Residents fear that if such conditions emerge before the arrival of the full monsoon, larger problems could follow in the coming weeks.

Many locals have demanded permanent drainage upgrades instead of temporary clean-up drives after every rainfall. With more pre-monsoon showers expected in the region, concerns over urban flooding and civic preparedness are likely to remain in focus across Rewa.
