Two Weather Systems Active Across MP, 13 Districts Under Thunderstorm Alert

Conditions to worsen Saturday; heat spike expected Sunday

Two separate troughs are currently sweeping across central Madhya Pradesh while an active cyclonic circulation remains entrenched in the upper atmosphere. The combined effect has already triggered rapid weather fluctuations across the state, with more severe conditions forecast for the weekend.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for 13 districts on Saturday. Narmadapuram, Betul, Chhindwara, Pandhurna, Seoni, Balaghat, Mandla, Dindori, Anuppur, Umaria, Shahdol, Sidhi and Singrauli are expected to experience severe wind activity and heavy rainfall throughout the day.

Friday's Weather Shifted Dramatically

The pattern became evident Friday afternoon. While conditions remained scorching in parts of southern MP—Ratlam recorded a peak of 43.5 degrees Celsius—several districts in the central and eastern regions experienced sudden wind squalls and localized downpours. Sivni, Chhindwara, Raisen, Sagar, Damoh and Balaghat reported intense gusts with intermittent showers, while Bhoppal, Dewas, Khargone and Rajgarh recorded lighter activity.

The five major urban centres showed mixed impacts. Ujjain hit 42.4 degrees, Indore and Bhopal plateaued around 41.2 degrees, while Jabalpur recorded 38.8 degrees and Gwalior remained relatively cooler at 37.5 degrees.

Unusual May Pattern, More Rain Than Heat

Meteorologists noted that this May has deviated sharply from typical seasonal behaviour. Rather than the sustained heat waves that usually dominate early summer, the state has experienced repeated weather disturbances. Western disturbances, isolated troughs and the cyclonic circulation have maintained an unstable atmospheric profile since May 1st.

"This is not the standard May pattern we typically see," a senior IMD official confirmed. The repeated surges of moisture and instability have produced brief bouts of heavy rainfall, localized hail in some pockets, and sporadic wind damage—a marked contrast to the relentless dry heat more commonly associated with this period.

After Saturday Comes the Heat

Saturday's rainfall episode will provide temporary relief, but a sharp reversal follows. Sunday onwards, temperature anomalies are expected to shift significantly upward. Thermal readings could rise by 3 to 4 degrees across most urban and semi-urban areas as the troughs clear and drier air dominates the lower atmosphere.

Safety Advisories Issued

The meteorological department has advised residents to exercise caution during Saturday's storm window. Lightning poses an immediate hazard during the peak activity hours. Standing beneath trees, near electricity poles or in open fields during electrical storms substantially increases risk. The advisory urges those caught outdoors to seek shelter in permanent structures immediately.

Agricultural damage is also a concern. The unseasonal rainfall, combined with hailstorms in scattered areas, threatens standing crops and early plantings. Farmers are being advised to monitor conditions closely.

Five Major Cities Show Pattern of Volatility

Historical data from the past decade reveals that May in MP's major metros blends extremes. Bhopal has recorded temperatures as high as 46.7 degrees (2016) but also experiences rainfall in most years, with 2021 and 2023 bringing over 2 inches. Indore similarly oscillates between heat peaks near 46 degrees and regular May precipitation—2023 saw just over 3 inches. Jabalpur has crossed 45 degrees on three separate occasions in the past ten years while maintaining an almost unbroken rainfall streak since 2014.

Gwalior experiences the most intense heat, historically peaking above 48 degrees, yet 2023 still delivered 2.5 inches of rain. Even Ujjain, traditionally a hot-season stronghold, recorded nearly a quarter-inch of precipitation last May despite temperatures staying below 42.5 degrees.

Residents should expect atmospheric instability to persist through Saturday evening. Sunday morning will likely bring drier conditions and noticeably warmer air. By next week, the thermal profile is expected to stabilize at higher-than-normal May averages, setting the stage for typical late spring conditions.
