According to police officials, the disturbance began in Ward No. 15, where several youths were creating a ruckus near a water tank, abusing locals and disrupting peace. Kolgawan police station received information about the commotion and immediately dispatched personnel to the spot.

Two policemen initially reached the area on a motorcycle and attempted to pacify the group. However, instead of cooperating, the youths allegedly misbehaved with the officers and became increasingly aggressive. Sensing the situation escalating, the policemen sought reinforcement.

As additional police personnel arrived, the accused youths reportedly fled toward the densely populated New Basti settlement. When the police team followed them to prevent further unrest, they were suddenly surrounded by around a dozen intoxicated individuals already present in the area.

Police officials said that one Assistant Sub-Inspector and four constables were encircled, verbally abused and then targeted with stones. The sudden attack created panic among the officers, who were compelled to withdraw from the area to avoid serious injury. Though no policemen were hurt, the incident left residents alarmed and exposed the risks faced by law enforcement during late-night interventions.

Confirming the incident, Kolgawan police station in-charge Sudeep Soni said the team was led by ASI Umesh Pandey and had reached the locality in response to complaints of public nuisance. “The police were performing their duty to maintain peace when they were attacked,” he said, adding that such acts would not be tolerated.

Following the incident, police launched an investigation and began scanning nearby CCTV footage and mobile videos circulating locally to identify those involved in the assault. Officials said that cases will be registered under relevant sections once the accused are identified.

Senior police officers have assured that strict legal action will be taken against all those responsible for attacking government servants on duty. Additional patrolling has also been intensified in sensitive areas to prevent similar incidents.
