A meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) in Bhopal on Friday witnessed heated exchanges and a walkout by Congress legislators over the long-pending implementation of the city's Master Plan. The confrontation unfolded during discussions on development issues, with opposition members questioning the purpose of such review meetings when the proposed urban planning framework remains stalled.

Congress MLAs Arif Masood and Atif Aqeel raised the issue of the delayed Master Plan, arguing that development discussions hold little significance unless the city receives a clear roadmap for planned expansion. According to the legislators, Bhopal's infrastructure and urban growth continue to suffer because the Master Plan has not yet been implemented.

Heated Exchange During Meeting

The situation escalated after Fanda Janpad Panchayat President Pramod Singh Rajput intervened during the discussion. The Congress MLAs objected to his remarks, asking why he was interrupting a conversation that was directed at the presiding Member of Parliament.

The verbal exchange soon turned into a heated argument, with both sides reportedly pointing fingers at each other. The atmosphere remained tense for nearly ten minutes before the Congress legislators expressed their dissatisfaction and walked out of the meeting.

The MLAs said there was little justification for inviting opposition representatives if their concerns were not being addressed.

MP Appeals for Calm

The meeting was chaired by Bhopal MP Alok Sharma, who attempted to persuade the Congress legislators to remain in the meeting and continue the discussion. However, both MLAs refused to stay and exited the venue.

Speaking after the meeting, Sharma acknowledged that Bhopal urgently requires the implementation of the Master Plan for its planned urban development. He said he would soon meet Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and urge the state government to expedite the process.

BJP MLA Criticises Smart City Project

Apart from the Master Plan controversy, the Smart City project also came under criticism during the meeting.

BJP MLA Bhagwandas Sabnani expressed strong dissatisfaction with the execution of the Smart City initiative, claiming that the project had failed to deliver essential civic amenities despite constructing large infrastructure.

He alleged that several buildings lack basic facilities, residents have faced problems such as malfunctioning lifts, community halls have not been provided in major complexes, and even the historic Dussehra Ground has been adversely affected.

Sabnani also suggested that large commercial plots developed under the Smart City project should be divided into smaller parcels to attract more buyers and improve revenue generation.

Officials Promise Review

Responding to the concerns, Bhopal Collector and Smart City Board Chairman Priyank Mishra assured the members that a separate review meeting would be held to examine the issues raised and identify solutions.

Bhopal Mayor Malti Rai also criticised the functioning of the Smart City administration, saying complaints regarding street lighting are often not resolved in a timely manner, causing inconvenience to residents.

MP Alok Sharma observed that coordination among multiple departments involved in the Smart City project has become a major challenge. He proposed the creation of a single nodal agency to streamline implementation and improve accountability. The Collector agreed to examine the suggestion during a separate review.

Interestingly, Congress MLA Arif Masood backed BJP MLA Sabnani's criticism, stating that if a senior legislator is highlighting such issues, the administration should address them seriously instead of ignoring them.

Wetland Authority Proposal Approved

Despite the disruption, the meeting approved a proposal to establish the Bhojpal Wetland Authority. The proposed body would be headed by the Divisional Commissioner and include the collectors of Bhopal and Sehore, the CEO of the Zila Panchayat, and public representatives.

MP Alok Sharma said the proposal would be forwarded to the Chief Minister for approval. He also advocated declaring Bhopal as a recognised Wetland City to strengthen conservation efforts while supporting sustainable urban development.

The developments underscore the growing political and administrative debate over Bhopal's urban planning, with both ruling and opposition representatives agreeing on the need for faster implementation of the long-awaited Master Plan.

Bhopal Airport Eyes New Flights to Srinagar, Chennai

MP Government Invites Airline Proposals After MP Alok Sharma's Push

In a boost for air connectivity, the Madhya Pradesh government has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to airline operators, seeking direct flights from Raja Bhoj Airport here to key destinations like Srinagar, Chennai, Kerala, Dehradun, Kolkata, Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Jammu.

The Airport Authority announced this on its social media handle 'X' late Monday, inviting scheduled airlines to start services from Bhopal and other MP airports to major domestic and international routes. This follows demands raised in recent meetings, including one chaired by Bhopal MP Alok Sharma.

Proposals Stem from Advisory Panel Meetings

Manoj Meek, a member of the Raja Bhoj Airport Advisory Committee, told reporters that suggestions for better flights to Chennai, Kolkata, Goa, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Jammu, Srinagar, Dehradun, Kerala, and other cities had come up repeatedly in committee sessions. "These routes are essential for Bhopal's growth," he noted, adding that the state is now offering financial incentives to make it viable for carriers.

The RFP comes weeks after an advisory committee meeting at the airport, where MP Alok Sharma, as committee chair, discussed passenger facilities, air connectivity, cleanliness, traffic management, and future needs. Meek had earlier collected online inputs from stakeholders like Harish Mulchandani, Rajat Singh, Sandeep Sharma, Sameer Sabharwal, Sanjeev Thakur, Aruneshwar Singhdev, Alka Kumar, Rajesh Bahuguna, Sunil Malviya, and Amit Dadhich.

Key Demands Raised in Discussions

Participants pushed for non-stop flights to Chennai, alongside regular services to Kolkata, Chandigarh, Goa, Srinagar, Jammu, Jaipur, and Udaipur. Practical route ideas included Hyderabad via Chennai, Kolkata via Bagdogra, Lucknow via Dehradun, Jaipur via Jammu, and Varanasi via Ayodhya.

Other suggestions covered airport upgrades: larger backlit displays, improved public announcement systems, recliners, better parking, annual fire safety audits, and staff training for emergencies. Calls also went out for flight numbers to rise, terminal expansion, metro connectivity, aviation fuel relief, AC bus services to the city, and displays of local history, cuisine, and crafts.

Bhopal as Central Connectivity Hub

As central India's natural aviation hub, Raja Bhoj Airport stands to gain big from these expansions. Enhanced flights could spur tourism, investment, industry, education, medical travel, real estate, logistics, and the emerging knowledge and AI city initiatives around Bhopal.

Initial reports indicate airlines have already shown interest, though no timelines are set. The RFP emphasizes viability for operators, potentially leading to new services in the coming months.

Ground-Level Improvements Suggested

Meek handed over a letter detailing these demands to MP Sharma and airport director Ramji Awasthi during the meeting. Efforts to brand the airport as a "healthy airport" included proposals for fruits bars, poha stalls, and local flavors. Cleanliness in arrival-area restrooms drew specific attention, along with prior suggestions on various fronts.

Local authorities confirmed the state government's proactive step aligns with national aviation growth goals. Passengers at Bhopal airport this morning expressed hope for quicker connections, especially to southern and northern routes.

What's Next for New Routes

Airline operators now have a window to submit proposals, with the government eyeing financial support to kickstart operations. If greenlit, these flights could transform Bhopal's role in domestic travel networks, easing layovers and boosting economic ties.
