Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami paid tribute to those killed in the 1994 Mussoorie firing, saying their sacrifice remains central to the state's history and the movement for a separate Uttarakhand.

 Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1994 Mussoorie firing on Wednesday, describing the occasion as a deeply emotional day for the people of the state.

The Chief Minister remembered the statehood movement activists who lost their lives during the firing on September 2, 1994, and also paid tribute to DSP Umakant Tripathi, who was killed during the violence. Six statehood movement activists were killed in the incident. 

Dhami said Uttarakhand was created after a long struggle and the sacrifices of people who worked for a separate state. He said the contribution of the movement's activists and women could not be forgotten.

Six activists remembered

The six activists remembered at the Mussoorie memorial include Balbir Singh Negi, Belmati Chauhan, Hansa Dhanai, Dhanpat Singh, Rai Singh Bangari and Madan Mohan Mamgai. 

The Mussoorie firing took place during the wider Uttarakhand statehood movement. The incident followed protests after the firing in Khatima on September 1, 1994, and became one of the defining and painful episodes of the movement. (Amar Ujala)

The annual remembrance has continued to hold significance in Uttarakhand, with state leaders and families of the martyrs paying homage at the memorial.

Dhami highlights government measures

During the tribute programme, Dhami said his government was working in line with the aspirations of the statehood movement.

He pointed to measures taken for identified statehood activists, including an increase in their pensions. He also said the government was working to build an Uttarakhand aligned with the aspirations of those who sacrificed for the creation of the state. 

Dhami also highlighted development initiatives, including work on road and rail connectivity and efforts to create new employment opportunities for young people.

He said the government had also acted on the long-standing demand related to land laws, presenting these measures as part of its efforts to fulfil the aspirations associated with the statehood movement. 

A painful chapter in Uttarakhand's history

The Mussoorie firing remains one of the key events associated with the movement that eventually led to the creation of Uttarakhand.

The state government has described the Khatima firing of September 1, the Mussoorie firing of September 2 and the Rampur Tiraha incident of October 2 as painful chapters in the state's history.

For families of the victims and statehood movement supporters, the annual tribute is both a remembrance of those who died and a reminder of the demands and aspirations that shaped Uttarakhand's formation.

Dhami said the sacrifices made during the movement would continue to guide efforts to build the state envisioned by those who fought for its creation.

A wedding ceremony in Uttarakhand's Roorkee ended in dramatic fashion after the bride refused to continue with the marriage, alleging that several intoxicated members of the groom's procession misbehaved with women attending the event. Following hours of discussions in the presence of police, both families mutually agreed to cancel the marriage. Later the same day, the bride married another groom from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

The incident, which took place at a marriage hall in Roorkee, has drawn widespread attention after reports of the unusual sequence of events surfaced on social media and local news platforms.

Alleged Misconduct During Wedding Ceremony

According to reports, the wedding procession had arrived from Mehwad Kalan village in the Piran Kaliyar area of Haridwar district. Initial wedding rituals had already begun, and preparations for the marriage were underway.

However, members of the bride's family alleged that several guests from the groom's side were under the influence of alcohol and allegedly behaved inappropriately with women present at the venue. The alleged misconduct led to a heated confrontation between members of both families.

As tensions escalated, verbal arguments reportedly turned into a physical altercation inside the marriage hall, disrupting the ceremony.

Bride Refuses to Continue Marriage

Amid the chaos, the bride decided not to proceed with the wedding.

According to family members, she refused to continue the ceremony after learning about the alleged misbehaviour with women attending the event. Her decision effectively halted the marriage despite several rituals already having been completed.

The move received support from her family, who maintained that dignity and safety were more important than completing the wedding.

Police Intervene, Settlement Reached

After receiving information about the disturbance, police from Gangnahar Police Station reached the venue and brought the situation under control.

In the presence of police officials and local residents, representatives of both families held discussions that continued for several hours. Eventually, both sides agreed to cancel the marriage through a written settlement.

As part of the agreement, the groom's family reportedly agreed to reimburse the expenses incurred on food and other wedding arrangements and return any exchanged items.

Police officials said no formal complaint had been filed by either side following the settlement.

Fresh Clash During Departure

Reports also stated that after the settlement was completed and the groom's party was leaving the venue with their belongings, another confrontation allegedly broke out.

During the incident, one person from the groom's side reportedly sustained injuries. However, the situation was brought under control before it escalated further.

Authorities have not confirmed any arrests in connection with the altercation.

Bride Marries Another Groom

Following the cancellation of the original wedding, the bride's family reportedly contacted another prospective groom from Bilaspur village in Saharanpur district, Uttar Pradesh.

After discussions between both families, the new marriage proposal was accepted. The groom and his family arrived at the same marriage hall, where the wedding was solemnised later that day according to mutual consent.

The unusual turn of events has attracted widespread public attention, with many praising the bride for prioritising her self-respect and safety over social pressure.

Police Statement

Gangnahar police said the matter was resolved through mutual agreement between the two families and that no written complaint had been submitted by either party at the time of reporting.

Officials added that further legal action would depend on whether any formal complaint is lodged regarding the alleged misconduct or violence.
