Aditi Maurya (28), a married woman found dead at her in‑laws’ home here, has left relatives alleging foul play after they spotted multiple injuries on her body. The city police have registered a case and begun forensic probes; the husband, however, told investigators that Aditi hanged herself.

Aditi, originally from Madhupur in Sonbhadra (UP), married 33‑year‑old Ravikant Maurya in February 2019. The couple had a 13‑month‑old daughter. Police said the body was recovered on the night of June 23 from the house on Dayalband Madhuban Road in Bilaspur’s City Kotwali area and sent for post‑mortem. The family conducted the post‑mortem in the presence of relatives, officials said.

What police say

The husband told police he was sleeping in the upper room with the child and on coming downstairs found Aditi on the bed. He alleged she had tried to hang herself with a silk saree but the noose broke and she fell.

Authorities registered the matter as a suspicious death (MURG) and the scene was sealed. The FSL team collected evidence from the room and nearby areas, a senior officer said. Investigations are continuing and formal legal action will follow the post‑mortem report.

Family alleges assault and murder
Aditi’s family, however, has accused the husband and in‑laws of killing her. Her brother Akhilesh Verma told police that Aditi had faced physical and mental harassment since the marriage and often complained about abuse during phone calls to her maternal home. Relatives said contacts with Aditi had reduced in recent days, and phone calls to her were often unanswered.

Brothers and other family members claimed visible injuries on Aditi’s body. They said bruises and marks were present on her hands, neck, legs and ear — signs they say are inconsistent with hanging. The family has demanded an impartial investigation and the registration of FIRs against the husband, mother‑in‑law, sister‑in‑law and other relatives.

Dispute over alleged affair and earlier conflict
Police sources said a dispute over the husband’s alleged relationship with another woman had caused friction between the couple. Aditi’s brother Abhishek alleged that she had recorded a video of chats from Ravikant’s phone and sent it to her elder sister a week earlier; family members said that argument may have escalated.

Relatives also said there was a physical altercation on June 23 before Aditi was found unconscious, and that they were informed of her condition only after others alerted them. The family rushed from Uttar Pradesh to Bilaspur when they learned of the incident.

Evidence collection and next steps
The Forensic Science Laboratory team collected samples and material evidence from the scene, and the police completed the panchanama before sending the body for post‑mortem. Officials said biological and circumstantial evidence, along with witness statements and the post‑mortem report, will determine whether death was due to suicide, accidental injury or homicide.

“Post‑mortem findings and forensic reports will be decisive. We are probing all angles, including the family’s allegations,” Additional SP City Pankaj Patel told reporters. The officer added that the investigation will follow legal procedures and action will be taken based on evidence.

Why this matters
The case highlights recurring concerns around domestic strife, alleged marital abuse and demands for transparent probes in suspicious deaths. Families in such cases often call for swift, independent forensic verification to rule out foul play and ensure accountability.

What’s awaited
Authorities said they will release findings after the complete post‑mortem and forensic reports are available. The police have not yet named any accused; they urged family members to cooperate and refrain from public accusations until the investigation progresses.

Focus remains on whether injuries on the body match the husband’s account and on any digital or medical evidence that can clarify events leading up to Aditi’s death. Relatives continue to press for an FIR against the in‑laws and for a fair, speedy probe.

Illegal Gambling Den Caught on Camera in Rewa, Questions Raised Over Police Inaction

A woman constable's husband among those named; City Kotwali says action will follow video verification

A video that has surfaced from the heart of Rewa city is posing uncomfortable questions for local police. The clip, now circulating widely, shows what residents describe as a long-running illegal gambling operation in a colony behind Fomens School near Gudha Chowraha, within the City Kotwali police station limits. Dozens of people are clearly visible in the footage, openly placing bets — in what locals say has been going on for years without any police intervention.

Gambling Den in Plain Sight

According to people familiar with the locality, the gambling den has been active for a considerable period. Gamblers reportedly arrive daily from different parts of the city and beyond, with stakes running into lakhs of rupees. That such a large-scale illegal operation could function unhindered in a densely populated urban area has left many residents baffled and angry.

The site falls squarely within the jurisdiction of City Kotwali, one of Rewa's main police stations. The absence of any previous raid or crackdown — despite the activity being common knowledge in the neighbourhood — is what has fuelled public frustration.

A Constable's Husband Named

The controversy deepened when names began circulating locally in connection with the gambling ring's operation. Shivcaharan and Ikhlak are said to be among those actively running the racket. More significantly, a woman police constable's husband has also been named as allegedly involved — an allegation that, if borne out, would point to direct complicity within the police force itself. These are claims doing the rounds at the local level and are yet to be officially confirmed or denied.

The involvement of a serving police personnel's family member has added a sharper edge to public anger. Many in the area are asking how such a high-visibility operation survived for so long without any administrative action.

Police Respond, Promise Action

City Kotwali police have acknowledged the video. Officials said the footage has come to their attention and that an inquiry has been initiated. According to local authorities, once the gambling is verified through the investigation, those visible in the video will be identified and legal action taken against them under the relevant provisions of the Gambling Act.

The statement, however, has done little to satisfy residents, many of whom feel the police response should have come on its own without the pressure of a viral video.

Credibility on the Line

Cases like this tend to resonate beyond the immediate locality. When illegal activity thrives openly in a busy urban neighbourhood for an extended period, it raises questions that go beyond a single gambling den. The focus inevitably shifts to whether there is a systematic failure — or worse, deliberate protection — allowing such operations to continue.

For Rewa police, the coming days will be telling. If the inquiry leads to real arrests and accountability — including scrutiny of the named individuals — it may partially restore confidence. If not, the video is likely to become a reference point in a wider conversation about policing standards in the city.

As of now, the case remains under investigation. The City Kotwali is yet to make any arrests.

Violent Clash and Stone Pelting Erupt Between Two Groups in Rewa

A late-night clash between two groups in Rewa’s Machhariya Gate area turned violent, leaving one youth critically injured after his scooter crashed into a wall while fleeing the scene.

A violent clash between two groups in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa city triggered panic late Wednesday night after stone pelting and physical assault broke out in the Machhariya Gate area under City Kotwali police station limits. The incident escalated rapidly following a minor argument, with more than a dozen people allegedly involved in the confrontation. During the chaos, a youth attempting to flee the spot on a scooter lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a wall, suffering serious head injuries.

According to local residents and eyewitnesses, the incident took place in the Upperhati locality near Machhariya Gate, where tensions flared between two groups allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Sources said a verbal altercation between a few individuals quickly turned aggressive, leading to open fighting on the road.

As the dispute intensified, members of both groups allegedly began attacking each other with punches and kicks before stone pelting started in the area. Residents said the confrontation continued for a long time, creating fear and confusion among people living nearby. Several locals reportedly rushed indoors while others fled the area to avoid getting caught in the violence.

Eyewitnesses claimed that more than a dozen individuals gathered on the road during the incident and continued the clash despite repeated attempts by bystanders to calm the situation. The violence reportedly caused chaos across the locality, with stones scattered on the street and loud shouting heard throughout the neighbourhood.

During the disturbance, a young man allegedly tried to escape the spot on a scooter. However, due to high speed and panic during the incident, he reportedly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a wall nearby. The impact left him critically injured, particularly on the head.

Local residents immediately gathered near the injured youth and arranged to shift him to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital for emergency treatment. According to hospital sources, the youth sustained severe head injuries and his condition was said to be serious at the time of admission. His identity had not been officially confirmed till late night.

The incident has sparked anger among residents over the alleged delay in police response. People living in the locality claimed that repeated calls were made to police after the clash started, but officers reportedly reached the spot nearly two hours later. Locals alleged that timely intervention could have prevented the violence from escalating and might have reduced the severity of the injuries suffered by the youth.

Residents also accused authorities of failing to maintain regular police patrolling in the area. According to locals, incidents involving antisocial elements and late-night disturbances have increased in recent months, creating fear among families and shopkeepers living in the neighbourhood.

Several residents said they no longer feel safe during late evening hours because groups of youths frequently gather in the locality. People demanded stricter police monitoring and immediate action against those involved in the violence.

Police officials later reached the area and brought the situation under control. Officers inspected the spot and began collecting information from witnesses and residents. Authorities are also trying to identify all individuals involved in the clash and determine what exactly triggered the confrontation.

City Kotwali police station in-charge Nisha Mishra confirmed that police have taken cognisance of the incident and started an investigation. Officials said CCTV footage from nearby areas and statements from local residents are being examined as part of the probe.

Police sources indicated that the identities of several people involved in the fight are yet to be verified. Authorities are also investigating whether the clash was linked to any previous rivalry or if it erupted suddenly during alcohol consumption.

The violent incident in Rewa has once again raised concerns over law and order and the increasing presence of antisocial activities in residential areas. Local residents said stronger surveillance and regular police patrols are necessary to prevent such incidents from recurring.
